ROUND 1 [MASCOT ROUND]
> Jennifer “Jumper” Rheesa, 18-25, Near Future Distopian “Urban Corsair”
:: Description ::
Jumper is a Parkour master thief and leader of her local urban corsair band. She is charismatic and outgoing, but can become emotionally detached without warning. Perfering to outsmart rather than kill her opponents, she is not afraid to use violence when needed and carries a homemade katana, crafted from scrap metal, to help enforce her will among rivals and enemies. She is often tired, dirty, hungry, and worried for her small band of corsairs. They may be urban pirates, but they’re also her tribe.

Hey Posh,
No - as you pointed out, the description is in the brief.
However, if you wish to embellish the description, feel free.

You're welcome - they were requested. Plus, we do have a large group of people who's native language is not English, so it's probably a good idea to provide clarification just in case. Hell, I constantly run across words I don't know (even simple ones) and I'm married to college leve English Instructor! :perv:

Hey Red, use your discretion. If you think you can pull it off by making her non-human, more power to you. That said, the brief does imply that she's human (by her name). However, again, it's your call.

Hey Oregano - is the deadline Oct 29th midnight of whatever timezone you happen to be in? I'm gonna need the time! :\
I'm going to place the exact deadline at 9pm, Pacific Standard Time on October 29th, 2005 - I would make it Midnight, but doing so is really unfeasable for me. If you need help figuring out when that will be for your area, you can go here: http://www.worldtimezone.com/ and get it narrowed in. This map shows the current time wherever you happen to be. (it does not update automatically).
Yes, this means that some people will have a *little* more time than others. I apologize. But really, at that point, it won't matter much. And, to be honest, there may be some fluctuation here as well. But expect this thread to be closed right about then.
Cheers,

Yes, this means that some people will have a *little* more time than others.
9pm PST happens at the same time for everyone all over the world. Wouldn't everyone have the exact same amount of time? for some people the deadline might be like 3am, which kind of sucks, but no one will have more time. right?
the only way some people would get more time is if the deadline was 9pm where ever they are.

Let me know if it's okay to include this, Sir Oregano.
Wow - that *is* a departure! :x
Like I said before - I leave it up to the individual artists on what they want to enter. If this is what came to mind when you read the description, well, I suggest some psycho-therapy :P
lol - no, seriously - It's up to you - if you feel comforatable entering something that deviates from the description, then cool. I'm not going to get on you for it (unless it's somehow way, way, *way* off - like an uzi wielding gerbal with photon flippers or something).
So long as the image falls somewhere within the parameters of the description, I think we're good. Ultimately, it's the voters that have the final say when we take it to the polls. Aside from that, the only real way an image is going to be disqualified is if it doesn't match the guideline criteria posted in the header graphic in the first post.
9pm PST happens at the same time for everyone all over the world. Wouldn't everyone have the exact same amount of time? for some people the deadline might be like 3am, which kind of sucks, but no one will have more time. right?

Ok...maybe I missed something here in my understanding. If someone would be so kind as to clear up my confusion, I would be most thankful. I was under the impression that CHoW was character design based on what the "client" wants from a brief description they give.
My confusion comes from looking at all these extremely well done entries (both in draftsmanship and painting), but I'm not seeing a lot of design of the character, but again a lot of wonderful design in costuming. I guess I'm looking at this from a recent animation grad's P.O.V. of character design and not from the real world.
Anyway, please help me understand.
I apologize if I have offended anyone as that was not my intention.
Again, wonderful entries, and I look forward to seeing more.

Kentucky, not knowing what was expected of you from your animation classes, I'm not sure I can entirely answer your question - perhaps if you were a little more specific?
In short, the CHOW activity is fashioned after the COW and EOW activities with some variation - with the previous two activities (COW & EOW) the artists are required to provide a description or background information for their entry. With the CHOW, we turned the tables - this is no longer required from the artist.
In my experience, in working with clients I'm usually handed a description that ranges from a few poorly crafted sentences, usuallly incomplete, to a full document of several pages depending on whom I'm working for. Character descriptions tend to be all over the map, as near as I can tell.
With this activity, creativity is encouraged, so there's a lot of leeway for the artist to create what they want. However, as mentioned previously, it must somehow reflect and preferabely *match* the provided character description.
The closer the artist can get to this, the better.
All entries that are completed (meaning the character - background is optional, not required, but if it is included, it needs to at least match the same level of skill as the character) will be taken to public voting for the winner.
Character *design* can be done any number of ways. I think what you are looking for are perhaps expression examples, posture, and personality. Something like that would be fine, even welcomed, as long as a full to 3/4's view of the character is included as well.
This, being a weekly excercise, I fear most artists, including myself are going to go for the bottom line and attempt to get as much of the character into one shot, much like what you would see on a CCG or a book cover.
However, anything that *gets* the character across is accepted, again, so long as it matches with the guidelines.
Hope that helps.

I think I know what he's asking: he thought it would be more like model sheets w/expression sheets. Which is what I'm attempting to do, and I agree Oregano, it's darn hard to complete this in a week! :\
J.Willis
October 27th, 2005, 05:18 PM
Thank you, Oregano. Teigrob hit the nail on the head. I was under the impression of model and expression sheets that would be useful in both game and animation (traditional / 3D) was the goal of CHoW.

Would this be ok as an entry, I mean without the values?

I'd *prefer* to see some value work there - but it's acceptable line art if you work the lines some more.
Just so long as it is not a sketch - i.e. a rough, like this: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=628948&postcount=18 - that would not be acceptable :)
Cheers,

Jennifer woke up one morning to a strange reversal of roles - she was the victim of a theft. A Scrat (a wildly unsuccessful splice between crow and rat) had found her dwindling stash of synthi-dogs. Unperterbed, Jennifer jumped up in pursuit, confidant that she could enjoy a double breakfast if she retrieved her stolen goods and caught the thief.

man .... im gutted i didnt pull out an entry for this one... Awesome work from everyone here. Gonna work hard on one for next round for sure.
1 comment for me would be that the character description should be much wider, ie like the COW. Then the details and so on can be added/created by the artist.. cus to me.. alot of these are very similar. simply due to the strict discription of timeline etc.. and all that.
Very impressie work from everyone though.
PS... has anyone noticed the distinct increase of people doing work on CA background coloured canvas' ... although cool looking... its kinda creepy to see soo damn many peopledoing it.... i think im gonna have to do some my self :)

No.
This is where CHOW sets itself aside from COW. Artists are not required to provide a description. This activity is designed to emulate what an artist can expect in terms of initial art direction. The closer you can follow the topic, the better. Entries will be similiar, but there is a huge degree of variation, as is apparent from the flood of entries.
A description will be provided. If the artist wishes to expand or extrapolate upon the description, they of course may do so, however it does not have any bearing on the entry, or voting.
One character.
One description.
One winner.
You know - kinda like Highlander :P

I wonder if the abundance of entries are because everyone is hopeful to have thiers presented as the CHOW mascot. Or.. if there are just that many people more interested in character designs than creatures or environments.
I think the detailed description is good for a change, keeping it closer to reality in terms of how most jobs are run ( not all jobs) but most. I realize sometimes a client says "just go wild" or "do your thing"..but more than half the time the client has a description and some refrences in mind like the topic presented for this activity. I think the fact that you don't need to write up the story for this is also a nice change from the other activities.
There's always room each week to change the details up like it was previously discussed. oregano already posted in the discussion thread an example of variation in descriptions for each week.
This seems to be the most popular activity so far. Nice Job shane.
Really nice work everyone

I wonder if the abundance of entries are because everyone is hopeful to have thiers presented as the CHOW mascot.
I don't know - that may be part of it, it may not be. But, the mascot isn't the end all be all - I've got another surprise waiting in the wings for people that I think will keep interest up :)
Or not.
Or.. if there are just that many people more interested in character designs than creatures or environments.
I think there's just as many people interested in creatures and environments. I think part of this has to do with (realistically) the fact that it's just new, and has a slightly different spin than the others.
But at the same time, this is something that has been being requested for months now by a large number of people.
I think the detailed description is good for a change, keeping it closer to reality in terms of how most jobs are run ( not all jobs) but most.
True, but again, it depends on which industry you are talking about. There's been considerable discussion about this in other threads - and, I've done my best to present this in such a format as to be workable from any industry angle you want to take it from - as I've said before, character spread sheets are fine as well, so people from the video game industry can use this for practice as well.
My hope is that people will use this as a jumping off point for their portfolios, or to beef them up.
I realize sometimes a client says "just go wild" or "do your thing"..but more than half the time the client has a description and some refrences in mind like the topic presented for this activity. I think the fact that you don't need to write up the story for this is also a nice change from the other activities.
Right - I wanted to make sure that the artists were focused on their art - not trying to describe it. Use the picture to communicate!
There's always room each week to change the details up like it was previously discussed. oregano already posted in the discussion thread an example of variation in descriptions for each week.
Yeah, things will be interesting, with a wide range of characters. Not everyone will be interested in them everyweek - and that's fine. But I think the variety will be enough to keep people stretching themselves and their art.
This seems to be the most popular activity so far. Nice Job shane.
Thanks Mike. But really, it's not me. I've had very little to do with it other than provide a place for something that was requested, and a little bit of window dressing. It's everyone else that's done the outstanding job, and have just floored me, and the rest of us.
Just a *few* more hours to the next serving of CHOW! :madchef:
Cheers all,
~Oreg.

Main Loop, it actually is better than poshspice's. More attitude, more movement. Just love it :) & great colors! Then lukavi's corsair is also kick ass, but I'd love to have seen the same character in a more dynamic pose.

These are all good and valid points from Mike and Shane. Personally, I think that everyone simply likes to draw the female figure, and the requirement of her having a katana sword also revs up our engines (I know mine does!) Except when I'm at the staring end of a sword. (Hasn't happened - yet...) :dead:
But seriously, it's a new thread, it's different, it's a change, it's interesting & exciting, and gosh darn it - people like it!!! <3
I am sure, as Shane has pointed out, that there will be good ChOWS and not so good ChOWS. It's too early to tell, but from what I've seen - this first week's ChOW entries are pretty darn good. Very good choice Shane! We need more!
Keep 'em coming! ;)

Lots of great entries!

Jennifer Rheesa was once a professional athelete, Olympic champion in Long Jump.Though, after a succession of world crisis, demographic, social, environmental, and energetical, the western world collapsed, and the accelerated social infrastructure created by capitalism could not be sustained anymore. The megalopolises of the west crumbled and tribal structure became the dominant social system, confronting a declining aristocracy made of the former political, military and economical leaders.
The charismatic and witty personnality of Jennifer quickly made her become a leader of men, and when she met the community of the "Traceurs" of San Francisco, she instinctively adopted their way of life and philosophy, which was perfecly fitting the new environment of declining urban tissue.

eh, i don't know. As Oregano probably already knows i didn't find the topic very exciting (chicks with swords? please) but some of you did and the proof is the great amount excellent work this topic generated. It started pretty slow but now look at all the entries. I'm still not very thrilled by the topic but i am at the technique shown in the entries and the different approaches.
That said, Bumskee's entry gives me a hardon, have i said i am voting for it? because i am.

I wonder if the abundance of entries are because everyone is hopeful to have thiers presented as the CHOW mascot. Or.. if there are just that many people more interested in character designs than creatures or environments.
I don't think the mascot part matters, I think it's just that the human form is such a base for artistic study that most people feel fairly comfortable with it. I'm most excited about EOW and IDW, but drawing a character just feels so unintimidating that there's no reason not to do it.
BTW: The exact descriptions also made it more unintimidating.

I figured she was pissed, REALLY pissed that evening, and only a Katana wasn't enough

I just have to give my fifftycensts (or 50öre) on this....
This activity apeals more to me because of the more detailed written description this has, than the creature of the week has. As an illustrator working in a industry where ADs most offen decides what you should draw, this is feels more like the reality we all will face...
To get very short description on what to draw, then after you've done a premilary sketch the AD will tell you that this is not at all what they wanted (or something... you will probably come pretty near to nailing in the first deisgn really.. but almost never extactly)...
But still in this competition (thats what's this really is.. (I would never partiticpate if I didnt feel I had a chance to win) you have to nail it without any art direction, but here you get some and should follow it. In this case (as it's the first chow.... don't know if this'll be the standard) you get the chance to compete on equall grounds, a descritption of a "major" gamre/movie character.
Okay.. that'll be enough of business shit from a rookie like me...
I like having some art direction it makes me work faster--- whithout it I would overthink the subject. I know my sketch is shit and wouldn´t fit as a mascot for this activity, but I still think it's somewhat competible. I dont really care about that, just as long as I feel I've managed to give "life" to the subject.
Don't really think it does mean that much if the competition is about characters, enviorments, createrures or something else. ( or atleast I hope it doesn't). The descriton is what matters, it gives it more reality...
ahhh shit.... I should´ve turned of my computer long ago, Im drunk and shouldn't be writing this at all...
please close this thread soon so I don't have to read this ( i'll be so embaressed if i see this) ...plus my english so bad.... varför är vi så fä som fattar svenska...

Well, Mike, you may have a point, but I think it's more about a really cool activity (it's new and poppin' fresh). I know I didn't post to become the mascot (I don't think monochrome pieces have much chance in comparison to some of the colored work out right now), I just couldn't pass up being in the first Ch.O.W (especially with Shane running it). In fact, I was expecting a tad different subject for the mascot. I guess it's just the C.O.W. cow, but I was hoping for something more associated with the food flavor of this activity's acronym. Not that I'm disappointed. Far from it.
OK, I am away from my normal set-up (on travel in Elay), but I couldn't not do this, so I bought a new pad (the travel one is too small) and worked all afternoon on this with the old pencil. Unfortunately, I don't have the normal "sleep on it" time.
The little strands popping out of the back of her head were inspired by what Black Beard did (and Yellow Beard in the movie of the same name), which was make little strands and light them up, creating a smokey appearance, increasing his victim's terror. I also wanted to make sure she had loooong legs (and what better way to accetuate them but with striped stockings?).

Sweet work, everyone. There are three or four that are going to be hard to choose from, as they really vary in feel. Anyone who thought that a static description would lead to too similar images should be fully chagrined.

I just noticed this thread at about five pm today and (like a moron) decided to see what I could accoplish in very little time. The answer is, of course, not much.
If this isn't finished enough please remove it. I don't want to insult all the people who put a lot of time and effort into thiers.
