So, I don't pretend to hide the truth:
I am a complete loser for zombie flicks. Hell, I have a Top-5:
1. Dawn of the Dead (Zack Snyder of 300 fame)
2. Shaun of the Dead (co-written by Simon Pegg)
3. Night of the Living Dead (Tom Savini can make monsters AND tell them what to do...)
4. 28 Days Later (Danny Boyle - Shallow Grave...Trainspotting...I know most of you haven't seen Trainspotting yet and - quite honestly - it breaks my heart...)
5. Zombi 2 (Luccio Fulci - oh, just too good to pass up on a Saturday night...)
So, somehow I managed to find myself under a rock for the longest time and have completely been out of the loop with the next installment in the UK excellence that is Danny Boyle's production of 28 Weeks Later...Not only does it star the remarkable Robert Carlyle (Begbie from Trainspotting - you gits need to get out and see this film), it's got a new director with a new vision...
Check it out: BRAAAINS! (http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox_atomic/28weekslater/large.html)
[+] AD - no, the Thriller video does not count...

Her lovers queued up in the hallway...I heard them scratching at the door...
I tried to tell her about Marx and Engels, God and Angels...I don't really know what for, but she looked good in ribbons...
BOOZER DOODLE! It's closing in fast and there was talk about securing a table for the event. Well, taking point, it appears that if we want a table (what they're referring to as a VIP table), we have to be in the possession of a VIP table ticket ($15)...
This is confusing as hell, because on the ticket site, they have only general admission and the VIP Table - Table ticket...Does that mean we have to purchase an additional ticket to reserve a table or we purchase that ticket alone? Hmm...I'll be calling the Vortex this afternoon (when they open for another evening of tater-tot-infused debauchery) and sort out the details...Stay tuned...
Advance tickets include entry plus a shot of Zeltzer Fantastico’s “Creative Juice.” That sounds like 20 kinds of Vodka to me...And if it isn't, then I'll be passing out Analog Doll's "Elixir of Inspirational Delights"...Which is 20 kinds of Vodka...and a splash of Grenadine for color...Not to be missed...

Just for you AD, check it. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redneck_Zombies)
Monet: digestive sickness is quite possibly the worst way to become ill. I had a stomach virus that put me out for about two months one time. I lost like, 15lbs (which isn't a good thing). It sucked, horribly. We feel your pain.
Guggenheim: Whenever I get artists' block, sometimes it helps to take a break from drawing/painting. Perhaps you could try other creative activities such as sculpting, printmaking, book binding, flower arranging - whatever you think might help to expand your creative abilities. Trying something new might be a good way to look at drawing/painting from a new perspective. I personally like handbuilding with clay or sculpy.
Another thing that might help is to simply sit and observe. Look at things as though you might want to draw them later. Focus on light, color texture. But don't draw, just look and absorb the info. After a couple of days of this, my mind is filled with new ideas, textures, compositions, etc. It's very refreshing.

thanks gg! your and 5T31N9®'s thoughts were both extremely helpful!
this just got posted to the atlanta animators list, seems like a good opportunity though it isn't a paying gig.
Howdy everyone...
I'm producing and directing two short films for upcoming contests.
One is a Star Wars short film for the LucasArts/Atom Films annual competition.
The other is a Battlestar Galactica contest being sponsored by SciFi.
The winner of the Star Wars short contest will wind up being shown at the big StarWars convention in May in Los Angeles.
The winner of the BSG contest will air on the SciFi channel after an episode of BSG sometime in the future.
Both projects have enormously tight deadlines.
The StarWars short has to be completed and uploaded by April 30th, the BSG short a month later.
I'm hoping to find people interested in working on the following:
Visual Effects, including Lightsaber rotoscoping, blaster pistol bolts...
Particle Effects, including bullet hits (in trees and dirt... can't afford squibs!).
Digital matte backgrounds of cityscapes on Corellia and Corsucant.
Digital matte backgrounds of the interior of a BSG Cargo ship.
Digital exterior space shots of the BSG Cargo ship.
A composite shot of a starwars style ship taking off from a swamp area.
Star wars style Hologram effects.
I can, and will if I have to, do all of the above.
But if you're interested in picking up some of these shots, please contact me off list at (omitted... can forward to you as necessary)
Effect photography (for the Holograms) gets underway tomorrow.
Principal photography for both shorts gets underway Sunday (and if you want to help out/watch, let me know!)
There is no direct compensation for these projects, just credit and a copy of the final work.
Additionally and quite ironically, I just got back from a visit to Industrial Light and Magic.
Details of which can be found here: http://www.atlantafilms.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=misc&action=display&num=1175048782

AD/All: I'm definitely planning on the boozer doodle. Any fees or early registration for the VIP table are fine by me. AD, let me know what comes of the call to the venue.
Good to see everyone out for the mini Tuesday, though I think MonetDances (heh! I typo'ed "MoneyDances" there the first time!) must have heard I was going to show, and came up with her mysterious malady to beg off attending. All those rumors about me keeping severed heads in my freezer are wholly false--they're severed hands: much less a cause for alarm. Besides, we all know Joel's the one who keeps the stray noggins in the deep freeze (or was it Trevor...?).

So, I've been trying unsuccessfully to log into the boards for the last 30 minutes. If you can get in and put the word out for Boozer Doodle:
In order to reserve the table for the event (or teh event, if you're uber kewl), we need to purchase the $15 ticket in advance. So, if you can spread the word that we need to get our tickets now for the BD show and those wanting to attend need to purchase the ticket listed as "VIP Table - Table"...

MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!(<— that's 30 "O's")
PAGE THIRTY ONE. pg. 30 lasted a pathetic 8 days!!!
I did two 20 minute speedpaints tonight and actually ended up not too unhappy with them! Grack, FAE, Steiner: Seriously guys: I owe you for your generosity in providing tips!!! After the mini tuesday night and now the painting class my case of the pthalos has become more akin to the ceruleans. Special Guggenexclusive: I got to hang out with The E this afternoon briefly before my painting class and he cleared me to begin work on the masks series for the old ALIEN-Ø. I loaded up his saddlebags with a few copies of ROTO VONE NONE and of course a personal pan parcel of CATL-PROPAGANDA cards. Rest Assured, like our active North Carolina CATL-extended Family, The CATL Spirit is alive and well in NorthWest Georgia! MOOO! (more about northwest Georgia in just a moment, heh... :D )
1.) I love you guys! Seriously... I've always wanted to have a group like this to work with, and now that it's been going on a while we're all growing artistically and the fellowship grows richer—> I'm humbled to be a part of it and i'm looking forward to the new and exciting things we're going to accomplish together. Spring to summer promises to be a richly rewarding time, so let's make the best of it! Having a group like this that's motivated toward improving together, teaching one another, developing the artistic comraderie, it's very creatively fulfilling. Just thanks, that's all. Keep on the CATL-Trail folks, the momentum ball is rolling and it's up to us to keep it going that way! Here's to continued Artistic fellowship and a growing community! cheers!
2.) ZOMBIE MOVIE IN ROME GEORGIA. Tammy met the guys who are doing it ... She'll have to fill you in on the details, etc. but from what i understand they need creative help. Looks like something is going down in roughly 2 weeks. My parents live in Rome, and i'm sure they'd be happy to host us for a visit, even if there are 5-7. there's plenty of floorspace, and we'd definitely carpool to make the affair cheaper. I still need to touch base with them, but i don't see it being an issue at all. What a wonderful way to get a personal tour of ROMEGA from yours truly and be a part of something that will ignite the creative flames. There's an extremely creepy ex factory / antique mall we can go to (if there's time) to help me deal with the nightmares i have about that place. Some of the filming will be happening in cemeteries, and a good portion will be going down at an empty school building. Sound like a blast? Damn right it does!
2a.) continued: The detail ironing will be moving along lightspeed on this one, so if you think you might be interested in the FIRST CATL ROAD TRIP, PLEASE join in the dialogue here!!! Suggestions, Questions, Ideas, Thoughts, ETC we need to get this puppy figured out. My thoughts are that we gather on Friday night, have a quick dinner in town somewhere, then embark on the journey towards Rome. Unless anyone needs to be back sooner my thoughts are that we'd head back towards the CATL stomping ground Sunday afternoonish. But then i'm an ish abuser, so we'll just see. It's roughly 75 miles from atlanta. the trip, because of traffic, etc. will take maybe 1.5 hours. Because this is my home turf i'll take the burden of planning and coordinating/promoting/organizing this 'un in addition to the cinquo de sketcho fest. no worries, this is an INCREDIBLE opportunity for us! 8)

GuGG: Re: ROAD TRIP. Do you speak of this weekend or just a weekend sometime in the near fututre? Either way, I suppose I'm down. Two nights seems like a bit much though. Friday evening through Saturday night seems sufficient to me. I'd be willing to do the driving if necessary. (I promise, no more crazing driving maneuvers)
So, I'm going to the Aquarium tomorrow. Anyone want some pics of something specific?....besides large breasted women I mean...that's a given.
Idea for mid April event. Medieval Times (http://www.medievaltimes.com/index2.htm) anyone? Jousting and feasting and whatnot. Drawback: Tickets are $47. just a thought

OK...
I guess I owe a report back!
So... it was a nice Thursday evening... and I had time to kill 'tween work and breaking, soooo I headed to the 'Bux for some doodledrawing time... guys next to my table were talking about film stuff... I kinda ignored it all (eves dropping without appearing to care?)... lucky for me before they walked out (after getting up to go), they decided to compliment me on my art and then wanted to see some stuff...
we got to chatting... they were like, "yeh we're about to film a zombie movie..." yadda yadda "in rome"... i was like (FLAG!)--- "Rome?... at some school? I heard about you guys!"
and then... bam. we were chattin' bout it all... and I may be able to get involved with all this! I told 'em 'bout you all and how stoked you guys would be. Basically, I've been invited to go up and draw while they're doing their stuff and filming.
The question "Do you draw zombies?" came up and the reply was, "... in fact... I did a digital painting of one... and it's on our site... so here's the address". Propaganda. Hah.
Anyway, so I didn't catch the complete flow of what's all up, but I may be able to do some art/design stuff for 'em and told 'em to send stuff over my way if they needed help. Low budget and all, ya know. And I told 'em I might not always be able to say yes, but I def. got peeps to pass stuff along to.
And... they were really cool. And I was starstruck... with non(yet)stars. Oh yes. Starstruck.

Here's the tentative schedule for the filming of the Zombie flick:
Once extras are selected, they will be called to confirm their availability for filming April 9 through April 14. Shooting begins right after Easter and will continue into early May.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0926063/ - yeah, there's the IMDB link...
Seems like they're a little late getting the pre-production art taken care of, if they kick off so soon. But, a zombie movie with a budget is better than watching a few kids with dad's video camera and a bowl of red cornsyrup for blood...Or, is it?
I'll tentatively sign on. But, my Easter is spoken for. Anytime after that, and with Sarah's permission (who will undoubtedly want to roll along, schedule permitting), should be 5x5...

i hate to be the damper on this whole ordeal...
but I also hate being the person feeling squeezed in an awkward situation... and I almost feel like it's getting close.
I really wanted to fill you guys in on this and all since we've talked about it and it seems kinda up our alley, but at the same time, I met these guys briefly... we talked briefly... I don't know what they're looking for fully... or if the main thing I can pass along is an opportunity to go draw zombified actors/actresses...
Soooo... yeah... I'm totally stoked that I met those guys (the two listed at the top of the imDb site), but at the same time, I don't wanna choke 'em.

Still, a trip to Joel's family pad...A tour of Guggenwonderyears in Rome...A chance to hang out with Motyka and David (the Romega Power Couple of 2007)...Dining in some of the finer establishments that Northwest Georgia has to offer...That'd be fun...But, only if I can get one of those white t-shirts that's all shredded to pieces (with faux blood splatter accents) that proclaims:
I survived Guggenwonderyears Family Tour 2007!

K... just for the record so there's no confusion later today / this evening. and to get it on the record...
1.) the normal MINI tonight is still @ Borders in Dunwoody (noone else has mentioned it, just want to get it on the record that at least i'll be there.). i need the time to get the sketching on so i figure might as well. the time is blocked out already. :)
2.) Artifex, monet dances, and tyler are representing down at the boozer doodle. Unfortunately tickets are sold out, so the rest of us will have a tot party tonight instead. I'm bringing tots, maybe ketchup. I'm late artist tonight so ... prolly 8 or so until i can get there. but i'll have warm parcel of tots ready.

Boozer Doodle, as MD says, was really awesome. The lady running it told me that pictures would be posted to their flickr account soon, so I'll keep an eye on that and pass along the link once they're online.
It was really unique being able to draw a model in such wacky costuming. Normal figure drawing classes get pretty boring drawing full nudes all the time <-- god does typing that automatically make me old? It was also nice escaping from the "F"ine "A"rt attitude that old, nasty, fat people are such exquisite models to draw from. Um, I'll take the extremely attractive Dames Aflame over the warty geriatrics, thanks. Hot burlesque models just gel with concept art better, IMO.
I hit my skill peak about 10pm, I think. After that, I was having trouble seeing the model through an alcoholic haze. So, I just started drawing stuff out of my head, and looking up occasionally in the off chance I could get both eyes to look in the same direction at once.
They ran 2 or 3 sketch competitions, and even offered some prizes to the winners. Thanks to MD and her friend Tyler for cheering on my effort when I got picked as a guinea pig.
Tots were good. I have no idea how many of them I ate. I think they were breeding in my styrofoam bowl. Come to think of it, I think there was some coitus going on between my beers, as well. I couldn't have found my way to the bar that often.

1. Leaving Office for lunchbreak, approximately 1:15 pm —> difficulty locating pryor st. drove around maybe 30-35 minutes trying to locate
2. up entering, waiting in line, and speaking motor vehicles Rep., realized that i needed more cash, and that debit/credit cards were not accepted, contrary to the website's information.
3. Determined how much money i needed, hiked to the underground atlanta information kiosk to ask about atm locations, went to nearest wachovia atm, and came back. Walked back to fulton county government center, got in line.
4. Waited in line, almost paid, but was without proof of current residence. Called both phone co. and landlord repeatedly, couldn't get through.
5. Walked outside: CAR GONE
6. went to sheriff's office to obtain information / tow release.
7. waited 40 minutes?
8. Got release, began walking towards A1 tow company. (3.19 miles)
9. arrived... realized that i'd lost my auto release form from the sheriff's office.
10. Calls: I get the fax number for A1 tow company and call the sheriff's office. The sheriff's office can not fax this form, it's against sop. Fortunately the sheriff's office in Fulton court building is open 24 hours, as is A1. I get a list of cab companies from the attendant, make a call to checker cab company and go outside to wait for another 20 minutes for the cab to arrive. I actually backtracked a good bit of my path but the form was nowhere to be found.
11. cab arrives we travel back to court house. fare =$11
12. i get the new form from the sheriff's office, walk back downstairs, eat dinner (already 6:30pm by this point), and call the cab back. wait 20 minutes or so and then the cab arrives, where we travel back to A1. fare = $11
13. Release fee for my car is $105!
14. getting to my car in the impound lot, there is a ticket on the windshield, due within 7 days, for an additional $25
15. get home at 8, too worn / stressed out to come to the mini.
16. today the adventure begins all over again. yay!

Joel. You need some art therapy after that. Like maybe a hot chick in pasties making eyes at you while you draw her. Boozer Doodle, next month, lets raid that joint CATL style!
I got one for you:
Back when I was still with my long-distance guy, I flew down to FL see him after 4 months apart. Advised against parking at the airport due to construction, I parked at the Marta station close to cabbage town and took Marta to the airport. Upon my return to Atlanta in the evening, I discover Marta stops at sundown o'clock. So I take a cab to the marta station to retrieve my car. It is now about 10 or 11 pm.
I leave. My keys. In the cab.
My cell phone has less than negative battery power.
I don't know any phone numbers and have limited payphone change.
There are bored vagrants staring at me, and a young man beating his girlfriend.
After a lot of greif I did get home, but there were pitiful tears and cops rolling eyes and an unhappy, expensive emergency lock out dude involved.
I wrote about it in my sketchbook to try to convince myself it was some sort of creative, character-building adventure.

Well, for starters, I'd like to thank Wes for his "hungry eyes" rundown of the BD evening. Although, Monet's brief commentary pretty much summed up what I felt I missed out on, Wes' consistent use of "sexual reference" clearly spells out what he got out of the experience.
Note to self: Substitute Wes' regular beer-drinking blend with the hi-test, gold label brands of some former-Soviet territory...It's time to get on the sauce...

I just wanted to quickly address some artistic direction issues we've been having collectively:
1) No more Stephen Baldwin Thunderdomes...I don't care how well it's pitched from meeting to meeting...No more Steampunk Stephen Baldwin, Stephen Baldwin on Ice, Stephen Baldwin in the Land of Eternal Night, Stephen Baldwin Overpowering Alec Baldwin on a Train, etc...
No more...
2) Someone mentioned a rejection of cape wearing. As 5/8ths of our core group are cape wearers, I think we're pressing our luck with an outright ban...However, I do support the cape and glove clause...That's just too Howard Hughes for our public gatherings...
3) And, lastly, the Mouse-Click Ideology...I know from meeting with a few of you individually (and for the sake of anonymity I won't be revealing any names) that the pressure to put aside WACOM tablets and return to a solely mouse-driven digital creation process has gotten out of hand. I can understand the edgy allure of creating in a two-button fashion, but please don't brow beat those of us who have decided to hang on to the stylus...
Oh, and since I just got a text to discuss this: Trevor, I know it's cliché, but milk really was a bad choice...
[+] AD - keeping CATL lean, mean, and on the scene...

As a wearer of two overlaying capes, I have to say a ban of such would severly alter my ability to make public appearances, and as such I am against any such action.
Come Sunday I am making my way to the ATL, and it'll be for a few days. Peter is having a show in Augusta come the 11th so I'm staying in ATL until then and at that point I'm riding over to Augusta with his woman. Seeing as the 11th is on Wednesday, if there is a meeting Tuesday, I'll be there.
I guess I'll mention that I've started two more paintings...though I've not finished anything, but...you know.

Man, this has been one hell of a week.
Couldn't have made the boozer doodlin' anyway regardless of tickets; got an "emergency" call on the way down from my friend's panicky girlfriend. Apparently "your friend's been in a car accident and is in the hospital" translated into crazy bitch speak is "your friend hit a parked car with a bike and is in the hospital getting a cast put on his broken leg."
After a two hour drive in traffic I spent all of five minutes in Marietta dropping some shit off, only to have her call me back with that bit of news when I was about 20 minutes outside of Athens. I spent the night sketching and getting drunk. I do not think it was wasted.
The chances of me making an appearance next week have gone up significantly due to an errant bit of acrylic paint flying into my contacts this morning, forcing me to go to my spares. I'm off Tuesday, and I have an optometrist appointment back home. So I figure, since I'm in town, why not?
Edit: Also, congrats Joel! Site's lookin' great. Here's to your continued success!

I was speaking to my older brother, Chris (Professional D-Conner extraordinaire and idea man), and he suggested creating some cds based on the website but with a mix of bios, contact information, and samples of and from each artist. I would assume you might want to do something similar with "Rice", as well. And I was thinking about what we were discussing the other day about the masks or something CATL for everyone. Why not bring in a live cow with a sweet ass pair of goggles? Just a suggestion. A bit over the top but oh so aggressive.
my thoughts... hahaha some costume type elements would be cool as hell... i'll be watching ebay...Maybe go junk shopping, etc. the site needs a little tweaking rework anyways and i'm going to be dropping an events and special ALIENOVONEILA section onto/into it. Here's my review.
I don't like dancing at Persepolis. I tried to say no. They flattered me into it. It's too classy for me. Too....elite? The clientele is mixed, but lots of Persians, folks who are bored with bellydancing and can do it while they sleep, and don't care give me a second glance.
The meal pricing isn't awful, great place for a very classy date and all...but I'd much rather be dancing at Cafe Istanbul, which has a much more unique, bohemian, relaxed flair to it. Where people are more likely to let out a happy "woohoo!" and lift a glass and fall out of their chair, or pillow as they case may be.
I'm not keen on extreme formality, and Persepolis is very very formal.
And then there is the fact that I have to pull out my old sparkly cutsy cabaret costumes, which make me feel like I'm wearing someone else's skin. I understand that comment could inspire a whole tangent in this group, restrain yourselves.
That said....the food is great. Ofcourse you are welcomed and encouraged to come. I'm dancing from 7:30-10/10:30, about 3 sets spread out in there. Having some casual (wear rippped jeans, maybe you'll balance out the snoot factor!) sketchy people there (pun intended) might make me feel a bit more at home. And I can come chat between sets.
I just need to make sure not to draw while I'm on break. That already got me into a world of trouble...

Sorry I missed mini. I worked until 9:30 that night. Deadline for the magazines.
ps--those of you who design, do you remember that when you were in school and people said "oh its such a flooded field, there are so many designers, so hard to get work..."? I've come to realize that those many many designers flooding the field are completely inept. Why, why can't every freelancer produce decent ads that don't make my eyes bleed and my preflight hell??? I'm embarassed for them, truly I am.

Monet: I totally agree on the design comment. Many is the time I wanted to pass out copies of "The Non-Designer's Design Book" when dealing with people who had jobs doing just that. I've had "professional" designers look at me quizzically when I asked them about the grid they used to lay something out. Ironically, that look answered my question most of the time. That said, design is a lot harder than I originally thought it was. I have a lot of sympathy for people trying to design a cool page (print or web), and respect for those who do it well.

Dude.
I have one who sounds absolutely bumfuzzled when I say, "Items in your ad are low resolution and RGB."
"I don't understand, I did it right!"
He once claimed something like 15 years in the field too.
I think the problem much of the time is non-designers hiring designers. They haven't a clue what to look for. They just know they like the color blue and pictures of puppies.

Designers are whiners. Everyone can do a better job. Everyone can out design everyone else. Bladdy blah blah...
Half the spats I've seen came down to interpretation - one man's vision of good design vs. one man's vision of bad design...
I've worked with people that taught design. I've seen it on their resumes.
"I taught design."
4 years. 6 years. Or, more. I wasn't impressed with their work, but that's because I have different tastes and I may have wanted to do things differently.
Are there tons of bad designers out there? I'm not qualified to say. And, I'm not going to. I know what I like. Just because I don't like it doesn't mean that it's bad. It's just not for me.
We've got plenty of designers in this group who are going to hop on and tell you all about their bad design experiences.
"Well, there was this one guy...blah...blah...sucked...blah...blah...awful.. ."
Don't buy into that shit. For every bad mouthed comment you make, you can be certain someone's saying the same thing about you. And, if you don't believe me, then you've already bought into your own hype...
Oh - and so there's no confusion - I'm not pointing fingers at anyone when I say "you." That's just the "universal you" that crops up in these sorts of digital detritus dumps...If anyone thinks I'm speaking to them directly, that's because the little speaker I've planted inside your inner ear is broadcasting my wifi workday to you directly...

oh hell, I'm as insecure as anyone when it comes to the do-I-know-good-design debate, and that's not really what I'm getting at.
I'm getting at the fact that I cannot print what they give me, and very often have to redo it, and they still get paid for the work. I'm getting at low res, no bleed, spot colors, disproportionatly stretched images...
I even get designs from big agencies, designs that blow me away with their beauty, and....they have spot colors in them. They have text in the safe area.
I guess not everyone who designs also has production skills. Which I resent also--I don't think you should have one person who makes things pretty and another who cleans up their mess...
Is this where we use the word digress? Lets talk about drawing.

Someone once tried to convince me that "the shit is bananas." Oh, she said it a couple times. Repeated it. Tried to hammer it home. Well, folks - she was wrong.
The shit is CATL.
BOOZER DOODLE. CINCO DE SKETCHO. All in the same week? No wonder my sketchbook comes with its own seatbelt. Buckle up, Brenda - we're dropping the hammer in May.

All: You know, I'm sitting here painting and watching Conan the Destroyer...It's one of my favorite movies from when I was a kid...For many reasons...But, what pisses me off about it is the beginning. Remember in Conan the Barbarian, when Mako is doing his intro?
"Let me tell you of days of high adventure."
When he does the intro in Barbarian, it's great. It's exciting. The drums start up right away. "Yes! Bring on the hordes!"
But, when Mako gives a smiliar intro for Destroyer, it's like he's reading a letter from his local waste management company.
"Oh...Oh, yeah...High adventure...And, maybe some running...And, I think there's a wizard. Yeah. High adventure."
Bums me out, man.
At least there's Grace Jones...

It's a $50 app complete with color wheel, all kinds of knick-knacks for doing analogous, triad and other color schemes, a favorite colors palette, and all kinds of other stuff. I have a feeling I'll be purchasing a copy of this for myself. It's a huge help for doing any kind of design digitally.

EL DOS!
Next Saturday, 5 May 2007 at Six Feet Under (http://www.sixfeetunderatlanta.com/), Midtown Atlanta:
We will meet at 4p.m. weather permitting, we'll take the high road and the upper deck to enjoy the excellent view of the city, not to mention excellent squid tacos and flavorful libations! Because it could be very bright up there, plan to bring sunglasses, cool clothing, sunprotection, etc. Bring some arting/sketching/drawing materials too; that is after all, the main idea :) Note that since the restaurant is at kind of a higher elevation the wind can pick up a good bit. If you were planning on bringing your new tissue paper 36x48 pad to paint on with your feather brushes this might not be the best setup.
After an early dinner and an hour, possibly two of drawing, we'll move the CINCO DE SKETCHO party over to Manuel's Tavern (http://www.manuelstavern.com/) in Virginia Highlands, where there is ample space. I'm already gonna ink wash my name in on the cinco de sketcho DD list as a designated driver so that others might enjoy the sauce and the greater merriment of a big catl meet! Probably stay at manuel's and reassess our course of action from there.
I'm down for the long haul though and would love to play my BRAND NEW SYNTHESIZER for you guys if the sketching is going strong into the later hours! Woo Hoo! Moo Hoo!

ooh is Daunt a girl? And a Pisces??
Thats enough for me!
Ducked out for a few minutes--paraded around Inman and...I..uh...got a 4-day weekend, a gift from my employer for working serious long hours. And spent the 4 day weekend stressing over a possible condo purchase. Wish me luck, I've got a headache and an acid stomach.
Will be at the Boozer Doodle with Tyler (Monet's Tyler, who needs to join the friggin forum so we have a name for him besides Monet's Tyler). I need the stress releif after looking at all these loan documents.
Sketch question...where does your sketchbook go with you? Do you have it on you at all times? Do you draw in it every day? Couple times a week? Do you sometimes feel guilty for opting for a book to read instead? I took mine to a concert with me recently (the light of one candle makes for interesting technique) and it served as a bit of an icebreaker. Do you find that your sketchbook helps you break the ice, meet people? It seems that everyone is friendlier when they see that you can draw.

Cinco de Sketcho: Analog-D will be rocking the dead doornail pub, my freaky darlings...
Wesifex: Thanks for the tip on the tool.
Monet: I sketch every day. I take my sketchbook wherever I go. I'm not as bad ass as Guggenstein, who sketches while watching Snakes on a Plane (oh, yeah - we saw you, good sir), but I do when I have a free moment. It's like journaling or keeping a visual diary for me. I get visions that I don't want to lose, so I grab one of several pads, books, packing paper, old bills, etc. and get them all down. Unfortunately, that means I'm rockin' two or three books at a time, so ideas get spread around.
I like to fill my free time with other pursuits beyond sketching - reading, cinema, concerts, good conversation. It's all fodder for the creative brain, and sometimes you've got to put things in to take them out.

Monet: I draw pretty much every day. Or at least do something art-related. Reading is also a standard life supporting function. I have to do both activities in shifts to meet my quota. Feeling guilty about missing drawing time sucks. But every once in a while it happens. The good thing about it is that suffering in any form always makes for better art so embrace the guilt and make up for it later in your sketchbook.
As far as meeting people is concerned, I'm no help with that one. I actually find it rude when people interrupt me while I'm sketching (if I am alone).

Answer to sketchbook querry: Yeah, i always have two on me. i like the moleskine because the quality paper is a nice release: and the size is just right for holding and working in. It takes ink wash rather famously i've recently discovered. easy to carry... opens flat so it's a better, smoother surface to draw onto. most people just say "oh that's cool." if they have something intelligent to say it can lead to higly enjoyable conversations in fact. otherwise i just do the "thanks! i'm glad you like my work!" or ignore them if they're being negative. have experienced very few sketchbook haters though.

Actually, a very good friend of mine told me the other day that he "hated the mascot design" and it reminded him of dungeons & dragons. ouch. heh. maybe the TD could be a new catl mascot?
What? I must not have read this correctly...So, because someone who is not affiliated with our group, does not participate in our meetings, or provide continued support for our endeavors - but is "a very good friend" - dislikes...that's not the word..."hates"...our mascot we're going to consider changing it?
If anyone dislikes the mascot, speak up. If you're a member of this group - active, part-timer, distant CATL relative - chime in. I have no care one way or the other, and would support a change, so long as it's directed by the people represented by the mascot and not some supercilious 3rd party.

massscot: i don't know. since it's my creation obviously i'm a little biased towards it. "Hate" seems a bit harsh but doing a TD seems like a nice democratic way to get a new image. Seems like it'd be a cool TD concept to have the victor's character concept up on the main page of the site... kind of like the creature of the week mascot thing. . Grackula asked. i rambled. :)

Hey, didn't mean to rock the boat. I just thought it would be a fun activity. I have no problem with the current mascot. Perhaps the mascot has an arch nemesis. The TD could be to design the CATL version of Skeletor or something. We could feature the two doing battle on the great wasted plains of the Apocalypse.
AnalogDoll
May 1st, 2007, 06:08 PM
Clarity:
Grack's suggestion of a Thunderdome is no cause for trouble. It's welcomed. And, as an extended CATL member in the wilds of North Cackylacky (I hate saying that, so if I spelled it incorrectly - as the spell checker says I have - I don't much care), she's more than welcome to suggest activities that offer cross-country participation, so we can help throw some love her way...
Changing the mascot may be a good thing. Any and all suggestions are welcome to that point. Especially talk of CATL Cowhead (needs a name) vs. Arch Nemesis...Or, a complete redesign...Or, something that has nothing to do with cows, cattle, or other bovine-influenced endeavors...
Bad mouthing the mascot is our job. Not anyone else's. If you want to talk smack about Cowhead: join the group, come to meetings, feed off of Gugg's Rice-K-Treat handouts, and then open your mouth...Joel can tell you about why the teeth are on the outside of the head and Ben will give you stern looks in defense of his sick paint job...
My reference to Donnie Darko's infamous Sparkle Motion Dance Troupe was not directed at Joel. It was directed at those of us that feel, at times, that life gets in the way and we're required to pass on things that may be more important to others...No one here can deny Joel's commitment to CATL or CATL-related activities. He started this thing after all. That's a step ahead of the rest of us. Except Grackula - who started her own thing.
Now, then - BD time is at hand. Wash off that funk you call "the workday." Gather up your instruments of creativity (nothing runny or juicy). Descend upon The Vortex and come prepared to rattle the tots of our peers...

my, has the group grown recently: growth spurt? guggeliciousmiraclegrow!?!?
SO, because I CAN (CAN CAN):
FOND MEMORIES OF THE HERD
a mootastic recollection:
NOTE: Entries listed below are subjective in nature and will be listed based on the interpretation of memory + time... ahhh... the affects of nostalgia...
EVENTS:
- Feelin' like a FOOL, wandering through the mall, loaded with art-crap to the max... trying to call Guggs... wondering where in the world the first CATL meeting was goin' down... and he wasn't answering his phooone...
- Our first sketchjams sitting there in the mall... no one knew anyone else... well, that's not true. I knew no one else. Chauncey knew no one else... and Joel and the SCADalites all brought a support network... and all the while I was thinking meeting #1 was gonna consist of Chauncey, Joel, and I... boy was I pleasantly wrong.
- Cinqo de Sketcho (sp?) #1... packing into an overly crowded mexican restaurant... meetin' the second half of our current CATL regs.
- THE ZOO TRIP--- can I get a... MOO? Now this ROCKED way too much... drawing gorillas and KANGAROOS... and girls hitting on HHH... and then ALL of us all sweaty and wonderfully nasty going to get some rockin' coffee in lil5... also, on a last note: I had to commandeer Wes's pencil sharpener to ransom my sunglasses back, you clepto!...
- BOT GARDENS! We got to hang with Grack for the first time. And the skull tried to eat Kenneth... but actually the story goes that he served himself up to it...
- Meeting at Le Bou...
- Switch to The 'Bux...
- Switch to current location: BORDERS... where...
*Joel has brought skulls of various sorts for drawing purposes...
*We've taken up much space with our table-compilation installation pieces...
*GIANT M&M Rice Crispy Treats... AHA! So THAT'S where the ideas for "RICE" was born...
*Ink was spilled...
*Edible TMNT temporary tats died...
-USBC06!!! 12hrs (cut in half from the original timeframe!) of PURE SKETCHING... minus a little driving time and insanity!!! COFFEE like nothing else, and the progressive dinner. AND THE INSANE SKETCHBOOKS TO PROVE IT ALL WENT DOOOOWN!!!.... USBC07!??! WOOHOO!!!
- Christmas party ("holiday")--- gift exchange! Ahh how awesome it was to switch gifts with other art-crazed happy people!
- REPRESENTIN' in the art scene! Art shows, guys... we don't do enough... but we DID roll out to Decatur for one... ok so I was a little tired, gimme a break! We did meet Gugg-if-i-was-a-girl... who's sketchbooks resembled our own CATL prod's to a scary extent.
- CATL-OCD starts as a guerrilla-event... and gets a name. Why? Because Guggs is infamous for his marketing and must make all things official. Cue: Jealous spiteful comments from CATL-crew.
- Switch it up with some GAMING, hosted by our lovely Wesifex&Fam. The cost of the event? Payments were received in beer and pizza money. Top the night off with some Silent Hill and pwnage by Lil'ifex... TREVOR.
- Stone Mountain! AND GERMAN FOOD... we need to go back for more if not just for the food... and with the excuse that poor Wes couldn't join us for it last time! Ya know... in all 'randomness'... -cough-... snails are slow, but i'm not sure about how they taste...
THE HERD:
- JOEL and his promoting! How many of those postcards did you give out now? His knit caps... (i'm sure he has a whole wardrobe dedicated to those only... i was yet to find it that time i "had to go to the bathroom" at his place... you guys wondered why it took me so long: NO, I wasn't taking a dump... I was searching out his knit cap supply. He hides 'em well!)
-JOEL is the ISH-ABUSER. Nuff said. He continues in his evil ways as he clearly demonstrated on TUES at the BOOZER DOODLE...
-JOEL and BEEF. HAHA... no pun intended... or was it!? But somehow, the greese and grime gets wiped away (mr. clean?) and things start fresh for future patties and BURNS!!! >:]~
- WES being the CATL-digital-librarian... you need an art video, tutorial, or... other stuff? Just slip him a few bucks under the table and he'll hook you up. Except... he's nice enough to work pro-bono.
- WES and his photoshop rendering!!! Blows all our minds and we love having him round to show us how it's done!
- WES and his extensions... WESIFEX&FAM
- HHH's visits... since he's now gone... but also as the ring leader for the SCADalites and their involvement with the main Herd. BEACH TRIP, y'all!
- TREVOR and his twitches... maybe that's what happens when you lose 10 digits... We gotta give him SOME credit though, they've happened less frequently lately... but maybe that's because the man on the phone has not returned to borders.
- TREVOR and his COMMENTS... :O~
- BEN and his stealth! IN AND OUT like the burger joint in Cali! One moment he's not there, the next moment, he's sketchin right next to you... and then POOF and he's gone again. No warning, guys... ya gotta watch out for this one.
- GRACK and her INSANE ART! We'll GLADLY provide eyes and a warm pasture for your visits! ANYTIME!
- STEINER and his words... nuff said!? I think so... but we might just have to make a mention to... BOB ROSS??? or should I say... TOP BOSS!?
- STEINER and his check-in-with-the-wife's! Always entertaining... always.
- MELISSA and her VISITS... WHIIIICH we need more of, btw... representin' the CATL-ESTROGEN... what what!
- TYLER(#1) and his voice recorder! I guess I can't go bashing him and laughing at him for wantin' one, since... oh wait... I already had gotten one just a few months before! But I'm jealous... his is better than mine... VISIT MORE--- and actually when I'M around too??? I'm startin' to think there's some avoidance going on... especially after the 10 minute "just missed" happening.
... and to those going to the induction process:
- MARCUS and gettin to see him outside of CATL events! Heck yes, guys... we def. chilled for a minute or two in ATL on Saturday night! Good beats and breakin' is all I have to say.
- MONET and her tatertits... Yes.
- M's.TYLER and his CHEATING!!! CHEAAATING!!! If none of you guys noticed (i pointed it out to guggs)... he so sneakily kept within the CATL circle at the BD with the sketchicalchairs 'game'. TO YOUR RIGHT, champ.
-DAUNT and... all the things that will fill this spot next time this list comes around... don't worry... the memories will come... and STICK. That's the blessing and curse of a weirdly capable memory.
______
Yes, thank you: Call me the resident historian.
Feel free (DO, I URGE YOU) to add to the list!
FUN TIMES, guys, fun times.
CHEERS and a happy afternoon to you all!
PS: Even in his dormant-bboy state, Tyler#2 would burn me... I have way too far to go :O~

BTW- what is Dr. Phibes Creative Extraction Tonic?
Taken from the catalog:
It's not often that Dr. Phibes explores chemical compositions of a less-than-destructive nature, but when he does you can be certain that the results are no less volatile.
This Creative Extraction Tonic was initially developed to provide mathematical thinkers and socio-economical engineers the opportunity to expand their creative boundaries in order to bust those perplexing equations. One steamy August, the bohemian community of 114 E. Downing Street happened across a stray crate of the old Thinking Man's Pep and Step Juice and an entirely new product was born.
Use: Before any creative endeavor, splash liberally into palm and immediately rub furiously into scalp. Effects should materialize within a few minutes. Avoid direct sunlight and boisterous political discussions.
Single order: 5 phials - Item# 002-720-0
Double order: 12 phials - Item# 002-720-1
We might also recommend our Dr. Phibes Portable Medicinal Case (Item# 110-50-2). Made of stamped bronze and hand-sewn leather, it's the perfect accessory for the actor, artist, dilettante, or cad-about-town. Take your Creative Extraction Tonic wherever you go!

I'm looking forward to today's festivities.
Fair warning: as usual I'll be getting there late, definitely later than 4pm, not sure how late I'll be. I've hit about a billion snags trying to graduate and shift my life around, but nothing that'll keep me from the experience of Cinco de Sketcho. I just gotta take care of some moving around before I can show up, and the longer I spend hauling boxes of reference books around the later I can stay out.
Not sure what I'll bring as far as art supplies are concerned; probably the usual pen and moleskine, couple of books to study from, some covers I'm working on, Japanese workbooks during downtime, that sort of thing. Nothing like what Joel will be lugging around with him, that's for sure.

So, I'm going to apparently be the first to chime in and say that yesterday rocked. In the year since our last Cinco de Sketcho, when many of us came together for the first time off the boards and really go behind this thing Joel's been pushing here, we've grown.
We've grown artistically - speeding away from our meager origins with the tutelage of CA.org, our relentless pursuit of new influences, and Wes' uncanny ability to locate and provide even the most out-of-print resources for us to study...
We've grown as a group - adding more hungry-to-improve members that mesh so seamlessly with the group, it's like they were here all along...
I'm impressed by where we presently find ourselves. A group like this really is a reminder of all the possibilities that wait just over the horizon.
For those of you that missed yesterday's festivities, you were missed. For those of you that had to cut the evening short, you missed seeing some really terrific (and boobed) interpretations of "bird-like..."
I'd also like to call attention to Tylerfr99's sudden leap of skill. Not only is this guy honing down his graphite chops, but he's doing it with a headlong rush...His commitment to improvement has cast off the mantle of "Monet's Tyler."
Speaking of Monet: get a hold of her sketchbook at the next meeting. That thing is a rich tome of inspiration (Tammy, you may want to talk to her about binding, to repair your much-abused sketchbook - whip something strange and functional together)...
Thanks again to everyone that made last night such a success. And, that goes double for Joel, who took on the logistics to locate us a place the allowed us to expand with new arrivals and avoid the wrath of unhappy waitresses...

Sec 1, amendment b: Warm fuzzy cows, all of you.
Thanks for the compliments--the reason my sketchbook is anything to look at is because I go through them very, very slooowwwly. Its not really a good thing, but CATL is helping.
Sec 1, amendment c: Had a fabulous time, am silent due to current brain drainage as a direct result of legal documents and contracts involved in buying one's one pad, but enjoyed myself thoroughly.
Sec 2, amendment a: Please, please stop calling him Monet's Tyler. He's seriously going to deck me if y'all don't quit. You may forthwith refer to him as Pencil Ninja. And if I do say so myself, I agree that he's progressing far more quickly than I did back in the day. The man is dedicated.
Sec 3, amendment q: On another note....FREE STUFF!
I would like to shed my drawing table. Its one of those standard black things you get at any art store, with the little lamp and storage tray on the side. Only difference is it's 10 years old, the lamp arm is lazy, and its covered in 10 years worth of paint and glue. Anyone want to take this baby off my hands? I'd really like to not have to move it, and it doesn't fit with my decor anymore.
Come on, the paint gives it character. Just tell people you've done so much work on it, over the years...
Sec 1, amendment b: I just took on another freelance design gig. God help me. I never learn...

Hey guys just dropping a line about the zoo trip.
It'll be at the Atlanta Zoo on Sunday May 20th.
Everyone's to meet at 10:00am so the professors can collect the money. We'll go in at 11:00am, and try to stay 'til 4:00. The cost will be $9.00 each.
Bring your sketchbooks paints or what ever you deem necissary to draw quickly with. Lions, Tigers, and redneck pandas, oh my!
You can stay as long as you want, though personally I think it'd be better to leave before the sun completely roasts us.
We're also planning another 'safari' to the Gergia Aquarium too - once I know more on this I'll post it up. Unfortunately I don't think large parties can get much of a discount but I'm still looking into this. I know that the aquarium run is going to be BEFORE the 20th if things go well. It'll probably be on a weekend as well but aside from that I don't know much more. I'll post more as I get more information.

...and i'm feeling great about it. whoa. (http://www.sacred-destinations.com/peru/images/cusco/museo-inka/elongated-skulls-cc-d0ug.jpg) anyways, i'm going to go on the record as saying no more moleskine for me until i've churned through the rest of my supply of regulation sized books. the m01e5K9nes get pretty intense, and at some points i'm thinking to myself "why would i draw in those other books if i could be drawing in my m01e5K9ne?" Once i finish up the remainder of my regulation-sized Letter sketchbooks, i'll probably revert to all m01e5K9ne all the time, which'll be sweet... and will try to find a good deal on them a' la buying in bulk to save $. at this point i enjoy the luxury of it but the highly fetishized drawing filled object it becomes is a little bit of a distraction
just a rant, that's all. woohoo, completing a sketchbook feels great. especially one of these books. doing a sketchbook in a week a month (?) ago really got me into the groove

Sorry to miss mini.
I was in Mopeville after pulling out on the condo deal.

Still enjoying getting rid of stuff and thinking of trading in the aformentioned drafting table for some kind of mostrous old wooden something with lots of drawers in it. One of those huge wall-covering secretaries would be beautiful...drawers and shelves and hidden hidey holes...all for my artistic pleasures.
Zoo sounds good.
Anyone got good comebacks for the statement, "You're a really good drawer"....? I always feel one on the tip of my tongue when I hear it, but my wit is sadly lacking.

How about, "I'm a good cabinet, too." (groan)

Sorry to miss mini.

I wasn't aware that is was insult. I figured "thank you," would suffice. But if not, there is always old faithful...
"You're a really good drawer!"
"...F!@# You!"

"Good? You mean I'm not a great drawer? How the F*()& would you know? Are you some kind of critic? How do you come off interrupting me then arbitrarily weighing and measuring my artistic talent? Maybe I'd be better if F*&$-holes like you didn't insist on engaging me in conversation while I'm trying to hone the skills that you're so judgmentally labelling as "good". Perhaps you'd like to like to help me practice my ass-drawing by acting as my model while walking away and keeping your myopic, blinkard, philistine pig-ignorance to yourself?"
Hmm...

Drawer just sounds dumb.
It sounds like...
If you said to a chef, "You're a really good boiler."
To a carpenter,
"You're a really good cutter."
Add that to the fact that "You're a really good drawer" is usually said in childlike sing-song manner, and the fact that it referencs a portion of furniture (not even a full piece!), and it just doesn't come across as very warm fuzzy.
"Thanks. I'm also a pretty decent artist."
That will suffice.

As Boozer Doodle attendees, can we refer to ourselves as Doozers?
Pardon me. I just caught the sillies.

I just pause, slowly look up from my sketchbook and tell the bitch her thighs are fat (it's usually a chick). Gets the tears rollin' every time. Unless it's a child under twelve, then the appropriate response is to give them the bird.
"You're a really good boiler"...that's just gold.

"The fashion in which you apply a medium to a substrate is quite enjoyable, thus making my visual senses dance with delight. Come, lets make out." That's the kinda stuff I want to hear. BTW, the speaker is a girl, of course.
You guys are goods drawers.
Monet: Is that table still up for grabs?

Wow. I run off to a conference for a few days and look what materializes...
I hope anyone of you who passes on a terse, angered comment over someone being impressed by the meager skill you've been able to hump together promptly squashes you. Yes, squashes you - with whatever appropriate squashing device is within reach, you dim-witted bastages...
"Are those your drawings? You know, if you stopped now, you might be able to put that energy into something that you're actually good at."
Guggs: The intestines piece is my fav. Yes. The colors appease the gods.
[+] AD - yes, it's loaded...
