I've seen this in reference to 3D projects, animation, and film work. I've also seen it for print-related needs. I think what you're looking for has to do with determining color choices:

But on more of a craftsman level, you work with the color key artist, who's going to do the color keying for the characters, because it's important that the background and their characters meld together so the characters read well on screen.

Guggs: I'm very sorry to hear about your grandfather. I offer my condolences.

Guggs: As Grack has alluded to a situation with your family, I'm certain I can speak for everyone when I say we'll keep you and your family in our thoughts.

Tomorrow Night: We've got a day to go before our Devil's Night Mini-Meet, and I'd like to have some input from everyone regarding what's doable. Just to throw out some ideas:

1) We could meet up at the Macaroni Grill where we had dinner during the USBC2.0. It's close to our usual digs, won't require any additional navigational hassles, and they can seat a large table extremely easily (and quickly) on a Tuesday night.

2) We could hit up Taco Mac. Again, close to our usual digs - for those coming from wide and varied points on the compass - and offering a broad selection of boozing and food scarfing.

2) We could hit up Manuel's - the location for the 2nd leg of our Cinqo de Sketcho event. They have large tables, another broad selection of libations, and the occasional bachelorette party, which we seem to always be a hit at.

"I want to see the funny man jump out of the cake again!"

If you have a "hankering" for something special or an idea to contribute, get it up ASAP. We should have an idea of where we're going to link up this evening, so people can plan accordingly.

Sketchbook show review: I thought it was pretty sweet. The good stuff was really good and the bad stuff was really bad. Joel's happened to be the 3rd book I picked up--one of the few who did something sequential. I enjoyed.

I really liked the ones that were humorous ("I'm afraid no one will look at my sketchbook") and the ones that packed so much stuff into them that they had to be bound together with metal wire and elastic. The one with the taxidermied snake head caught my eye as well.

Methinks I can join tomorrow night, and am agreeable to whatever location the masses prefer.

I know some of you know about this already. Would anyone care to join me on Saturday at Binders for the Adam Hughes demo (2:30-4), and possibly the lecture on W&N oil paints (4-5:30)? depends on availability. Also, they sell ART SUPPLIES!

Fingerless: I owe you a gold star for introducing me to Binders. I haven't been to "The Dick" since they packed up the Roswell Store, and the drive to The Pearl is damn tedious. I've hemmed and hawed on this, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to bow out. I had to work over the weekend, and I owe The Glamazon some fun...

DEVIL'S NIGHT MINI! It's better than ROCKTOBERFEST!

To just split this down the middle, here's the tentative plan:

7:30 - Converge on the Dunwoody Macaroni Grill (Directions: HERE!) (http://www.macaronigrill.com/Menu/LocationSearch.aspx?template=map_search&transaction=search&address=&city=&stateProvince=&postalCode=30350&country=US&radius=10&search2=1&x=0&y=0#) for dinner and graphite. Once we've had our fill, we can make our way over to the Taco Mac to really put a nail in the old sketchbook coffin.

If Italian isn't your bag, have a drink, pound out some pages, and wait until we land at the Taco Mac for American Causal delights.

How's that rock with everyone?

Doktor Guggenstein: Calendar marked with the appropriate date. Looks to be an exceptional day of inspiration and discovery...And a little Greasy Sunday Majesty to top it all off. Thanks for putting this together.

Grackula: You've got a great contribution in the Thunderdome. Your signature style translates well into color. Looking forward to seeing what you've been working on this Saturday...

Triple-H: I'm hoping this return to the Interwebs doesn't interfere with the tremendous work you've been putting together in that visual storyteller's sketchbook of yours. You've been missed, man. Get back up here when you can...

Capt.Joosh Leg Lamp Dealer! Love it. Oh, what's that line?

Only one thing in the world could've dragged me away from the soft glow of electric sex gleaming in the window...

Please come out and join us. I'm certain we can beguile you into staying around for the whole day with our graphite-infused charm...

All: Well, it's time to blow out the candles in the jack-o-lanterns and return another Halloween to the barrow. If anyone is interested in keeping up with the NotP Thursday, let me know. I'll be setting up at the Starbucks around 7pm.

Sometimes, you have to back things up. You can't spend your life going around tossing out challenges and not pick up one or two along the way. You also can't spend your life ignoring the most basic use of the apostrophe.

There's a rumor about that if you secret your bad sketches under your pillow at night, King Unicorn will come and leave you a shiny ducat in their place. Of course, I've also heard silver toenail clippings or a black liver. It changes from country to country.

Not much reporting on the state of Rodin from the weekend. I'm hoping that there was a fair turnout and that much inspiration was breathed in from the exhibits.

I've begun my submission for the Apache Cafe Zodiac exhibit. As my present artistic toils are tactile/textile in nature, I've elected the path of the wordsmith. Is anyone else contributing? I'd be more than willing to arrange a night of collective channeling to celebrate and inspire each other's endeavors. Let me know if you'd be interested.

Until tomorrow...

Is Apache looking for a series of works by each artist, or a single piece? I'm a little fuzzy on that. I'm not sure I'd have time to create a series by then.

Ethax: Even a brief journey through that site produces sad revelations. Naked Captain America is still the most impressive example. During today's inspection, I realized that our deceased hero is anatomically correct in that image.

"Take it out of my brain!"

All: Last night, I mentioned Fantasy Flight Games as being a prospect everyone interested in card/boardgame/RPG illustration/design should keep inside his/her Employment Connection File. Today, I stumbled across an inspiring process discussion with the cover artist for their new GRIMM RPG.

There are two segments: sketching and painting. I've linked them below for your review.

In regards to the zodiac show, what's up with the "no works smaller than 24x36" ? Is that just a typo? That seems like it would really limit the style and types of work that they could recieve. Of course, it then says "submission guidelines are very loose", so which is it?

Joel - We missed you last night

Wes/Eric/Ben/Joel?- Meeting at starbucks tomorrow? We've been doing well lately about keeping it regular, and should continue to do so.

About the Zodiac show, you do have to do your own zodiac sign, not any one you choose. Also, I sent an email asking for the size issue to be clarified.

Bumskee's sketchbook (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=46487) as recommended by flipnasty

So, when your character is flying through the air, how then do you include mini dirt piles?

KingUnicorn
November 14th, 2007, 08:46 PM
Fingerless: Tomorrow, it's on. In fact, I'll have a brown paper bag of magical delights for you. Yes magical delights. Also, thanks for following up on the Zodiac stuff. The manner in which the details were expressed leaves plenty to be confused about.

Grackula: The size issue is disconcerting. If it comes back as a firm rule (which should have been clarified as such before announcing "It's a free-for-all!" for the rest of the guidelines), hopefully you could just have something enlarged. With your rendering techniques, you'd go blind filling up that much space with your knotty knots and wrinkled wrinkles.

All: With Thanksgiving next week, it's a mad dash into the holiday season. That means CATL 2007 Tres Equis - Uno Mas is in the works! Ideas, suggestions, rousing statements in favor of nihilism - all would be appreciated to help us prepare for our annual Holiday Party. We've got a few weeks ahead of us to prepare, but the further in advance we can plan, the earlier our out-of-town/extended family CATLites can make arrangements to join us.

Think about it. Sound off with your thoughts.

Q: When will the artists be notified that they have been selected for the show?

First, excellent meeting tonight. Lots of brilliant progress happening around the table: Guggs' astounding studies, Fingerless' growing sketchbook of life drawings and yokozuna champions, Nasty's professional gigs, Ethax's journeys into dark cities and Frazetta fantasies, and whatever Dre was rocking on the far side of the table.

Next, since we're going to miss Thursday's secondary meeting due to some avian-themed holiday, would anybody be open to a Sunday rendezvous? Art and lunch?

Lastly, BEHOLD! REVENGE OF THE GOLD PANTS!

Attention all in need of timely figurative reference!!!
I talked to both garrin and ben about this plan, and they're both down.
This wednesday night i'm gonna hire a female model to pose for reference for my last man standing piece. if any of you would like to come down, pitch into the money pile for the model, that'd be great. and you could pose her as you wish for your own compositions. I'd be certainly willing to help you pose the model ("hey, handme that pillow, put tape there.") while you sit back and direct the model take shots / sketch. the going rate is $20 an hour. a 2 hour slot being $40. so if any of you can help out... it would help you in this time of demonic-deadline-wraiths, and it would samely lighten the financial load on the other participants.

'nuff said, yall should come out :)

EDIT as of 27 nov: Model Scheduled! :)

First: Many thanks to Guggs and Garrin for arranging the life drawing session and supplying a studio space for us to work in. It was a wonderful change from the fields of Ovensong and the cramped corners of Starbucks. Definitely an improvement in the creative atmosphere.

Second: My schedule for today is already spilling over into tomorrow, so I'll have to abandon my plans to meet up tonight. It appears I'll be on lock down until Friday afternoon (Fingerless: I'll have that film for you to borrow on Tuesday).

Third: Any hip hop song about Willow Ufgood deserves special attention. You can run with the Dungeon Majesty vs. Leslie and the Lys opening, or you can skip ahead to -3:28 for the Daikini-infused rhymefest.

Reposted from the court of teh crimson King Unicorn...

Concept Art Atlanta Yule Madness - 2007

When: Sunday, December 16th

Where: The Frozen Forest of King Unicorn (PM myself or King Unicorn for this information)

Time: 5pm

Admission: One tasty dessert of your choosing

Activities:

Dinner: We will be gathering at King Unicorn's promptly at 5 and then carpooling to Tijuana Joe's Mexican Cantina ( http://www.tijuanajoes.com/) for a Feliz Navidad inspired dinner. Tijuana Joe's menu is broad enough to cover everyone's dietary sensibilities (carnivorous, omnivorous, and herbivorous). We will return to King Unicorn's to indulge in festive desserts and imbibe libations of all colors and tastes (Stiff drinks and a selection of wintry beers and ciders will be provided. If you would like to bring additional drinks, you will be praised). If you are underage, sodas and juices will be available. At this time, King Unicorn is not willing to go to jail for your buzz.

The purpose of the rendezvous is to allow time for people to deposit gifts and hand off desserts (including those that might require refrigeration), as well as condense into fewer vehicles. If you would prefer to meet us at TJ's (approx. 5:30), the address is: 7870 Roswell Rd, Dunwoody, GA 30350

Lucky Numbers Gift Exchange: In keeping with our long-standing tradition (of one full year), we will be having our annual holiday gift exchange. Gift suggestions include: art supplies, art books, prints (of your work or others), self-made gifts, edibles, and anything you believe one of your fellow CATL members would be delighted to have. You are not required to bring a gift if you do not want to participate in the gift exchange. Please do not purchase a gift with a particular CATL member in mind. Gifts are assigned numbers. Each CATL member will randomly draw a number and receive that number's associated gift. Please conceal your gift in a bag, wrapping paper, tinfoil, construction paper shell, etc.

Entertainment: King Unicorn has a broad selection of films to run during the event. If you have a film you would like to thrill the group with, please bring it along. A dough sculpture station will be set up for those who want to make Strange and Unusual Holiday Ornaments (KU will bake any ornaments made and deliver them for painting and hanging). Random sketchjams, solo sketchwork, and general insanity are expected.

RSVP:

Répondez s'il-vous-plaît is a French phrase that loosely translates to "Please extend a sense of courtesy to your host and inform him of whether or not you will be in attendance, or risk being peppered with swear words." If you are planning on joining us, please let us know. Keeping track of who will be coming helps us make the necessary preparations. Simply drop a yea or nay on the CATL thread, PM King Unicorn, or send a response to Guggenmaneuver.

If you have question about this upcoming event, contact King Unicorn or Guggenmaneuver for details.

Guggs: Thanks for hosting the details, good sir. If you're already off on your trip, you have to get the the National Gallery of Art. There's a terrific Baroque Woodcut (http://www.nga.gov/exhibitions/woodcutinfo.shtm) exhibit there that's been calling for you.

All: I do hope you'll all be able to attend the festivities! My wife makes a mystical brew that has a way of sneaking up on unsuspecting revelers. Good food, cool gifts, great friends - don't sit this one out!

And, now for something completely different: Willow Ufgood's about to throw someone a beating...

And I just ran out of sketchbook. Finally. Last page got the beautiful orange sticker that someone gifted to me on my car after boozer doodle, that says "Your Car has been Booted" in big pretty san serifs.

Grack: Missed the previous Indy Jones find. I'm looking forward to it.

Wesifex: I'll be out for a limited time tonight. Same place - Starbucks next to the Chipotle. As for The Golden Compass, it might be religious/philosophical differences that's putting a hurt on the movie. However, the studio hit to remove/change a lot of the "anti-Narnia" elements that made the books a bit uncomfortable in the eyes of certain factions is the real issue. Visually, stunning. Tale-telling, run amok (and poorly scored).

Fae: Come out. Bring candy.

Tammy, we'll put you down for coming. Since we're doing dinner first, if you need extra time, you can always meet us back at "One Horn Place" for the rest of the fun.

As for gifting, I'd say use your best judgment. If you find something that you think others would like and it's in a price range you feel comfortable with, go for it. If you have concerns about not upsetting your financial balance, any gift that would have a special value between friends will suffice. With this group, no one will turn away a gift card, art supplies, a special print from your sketchbook or portfolio, and the like. Hell, I recall someone walking home with cans of peas last year (and a kick ass Demon Hunter's Art Tome)...

All: This has completely captivated me. Completely and thoroughly (as discussed among Ethax and He-Who-Has-No-Fingers). While the art is not entirely what I expected, in some ways it is. Rare and hand-written treasure... (http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html/ref=amb_link_6059972_2?ie=UTF8&docId=1000179911&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-0&pf_rd_r=0BP3BQ3QEN466W0F3H3C&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=340739801&pf_rd_i=507846)

Those of you who left desserts behind are not helping me maintain my fitness regimen. I shake a handful of delicious cookies at you in anger...pause to nibble...and then continue with my furious display...

Also, thanks for the kind words on my latest creative efforts. As 2008 ramps up and I make certain professional maneuvers, you'll be seeing the new work creeping out into the public arena. 2007 was a good year to test out some things I picked up during the previous year. Many thanks to all you CATL for inspiration, critiques, and general artistic support.

Grackula: You and Jay were missed on Sunday. Hope you're feeling better and will be back in action soon!

Monet: I accidentally logged in as my "other self" and received your PM regarding dance supplies. I'm sorry I failed to receive it earlier, and offer you ten-thousand thanks for taking the time to put that together.

Tammy-Fae Breaker: Happy birthday! Another year down and many more yet to go! I do hope you have something festive planned to celebrate the occasion.

All: As I've got a few more holiday gifts that need to be worked on before X-mas lands in our laps next week, I won't be out at the meeting tonight. However, I'm working to get things finished up early, so I have the rest of the week free and clear for art-related activities.

Just wanted to post and thank Mr. Steiner and Sarah once again for their generous hospitality, and to thank everyone for their wonderful company, as always.

I hate having such brief appearances because I feel I'm 2000% more productive in the presence of a group energy as opposed to sitting at a hotel desk, at night and alone, with nothing but the hum of a fax machine to keep me company. I'll be on to bigger things soon, though, but I just wish I could stick aroung longer.

Since it's still up in the air, if you guys don't mind pushing back next week's meeting to Friday I'd be able to make it for the full time. Of course, I'd rather not if this means someone else can't go, or gets in the way of other things.

Merry Christmas, all! I hope you're having a wonderful holiday.

Sad to say, barring some huge catastrophe, my eager plans to come out next Friday have run afoul due to my own inability to tell time whatsoever around the holidays. It seems the concepts of "the Friday after Christmas" and "the 28th of December" didn't mesh, and so I inadvertently planned to journey up for the meeting on the same night my girlfriend is having her 23rd birthday. As often as I can get away with using my art as an excuse from everything, sadly this time it won't fly. Nor would I want it to regardless, seeing as I've been planning and saving up for a night out with her for months.

I apologize for the mix-up, but promise a full visit when I can get a night off, which I'm due seeing as I am at work now and I'll have to work later today.

MATTRESS FACTORY STUDIO #6

Beginning Wednesday, Jan. 9th and Sunday, Jan. 13:

WHAT:
Weekly art sessions geared towards experimentation with different media - ink wash, oil paint, pastel, charcoal, digital - bring it on! No spray paint, resin or other highly smelly & toxic stuff. The goal is to paint from life every week, with a live model emphasis: live model nudes, live model clothed (photo refs when needed & if the model is agreeable). The focus will be on longer poses -- 15-20 minutes and/or poses over several sessions -- to allow more time for detailed studies or finished work. The goal is one model every four sessions, so you can finish what you’ve started.

WHY?

1. Models can get expensive. By pooling our dough, we can afford to paint/draw from life. We will choose the model's poses.

2. Doing art from life is about 1000x better than working from photo refs - you can actually see the colors in the shadows and not have to deal with distortion from the camera lens.

3. The Mattress Factory has fantastic creative energy, and when supporting each other in our art, artists can do incredible things. You can make a mess in an art studio without worrying about getting paint all over your nice sofa.

WHEN:
Every Wednesday night from 8 to 10pm (starts 1/9)
Every Sunday night from 7 to 9pm (starts 1/13)

WHERE:
Mattress Factory Studios - Studio #6
290 Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive SE
Atlanta, Georgia 30312
Located between Eyedrum and Mattress Factory Lofts
I will email you with directions once you RSVP

RSVP:
**Please RSVP** and let me know if you are able to pre-pay for 4 sessions, and if so, which night(s) you would like to attend – Wednesday or Sunday. One model for 4 Wednesdays, a 2nd model for 4 Sundays, changing models each month. Please tell your artist friends.

COST:
$40 for four sessions (4 Wednesdays OR 4 Sundays)
Pay at the first session of each month. By pre-paying for 4 sessions, we can lock-in the same model for a month, and not worry about having enough artists to cover our model costs each session.

SUPPLIES:
Bring your own easel, paints, solvents, mediums, brushes and supports. If you’d like to leave your stuff @ the studio, that’s totally cool.

Fingerless: I went over the first 30 seconds. You should've put a warning on that thing...I'm wearing black spandex to the next meeting.

Barbarino: In case you check here first, I replied to your email. It's a great routine you've set up, G. I'm sure you'll get some positive feedback.

All: I just wanted to give everyone a heads up: I'm going to be something of a ghost for the next couple of months. Things ramped up pretty quick as this first week of 2008 came to a close. I'll do what I can to sneak away when I can.

JCA: Motivation? Inspiration? Come out! We have handfuls to pass around. And - not to mention - we always like additional company at our meetings.

G-Gem: Gold star for the Silver Apples reference post in Fingerless' sketchbook.

All: So far, it's looking good for me getting out and about for a bit tomorrow (watercolors in tow). I'm pounding away at the clay to get this last sculpture wrapped up and posted by Sunday PM. I could use the night off to get some distance from my recent changes/additions.

Looking forward to seeing all of the Alien-O stuff for the summer show.

Everyone >> I'm trying to round up a crew for Wednesday and Sunday night painting/drawing/mixed media sessions at Mattress Factory Studios with live models. If interested, shoot me an email at garrinh at bellsouth dot net, and I'll send more info.

I've postponed the start of the first sessions by a week (no Wed 1/9 session) because I've received a very underwhelming response. I've heard from Gugg, No Fingers and King Unicorn so far. Can't move forward w/model bookings until we get 4-5 people for either Wed. or Sun. night.

I've started an Atlanta Painter's Meetup group to increase attendance & introduce some new events for Atlanta artists...check it here:

Great to be back in the swing of things post-holidays. We had a good turnout tonight and new faces are always a welcomed sight. Seems like we've been doing this forever now - and it's showing no signs of slowing down.

As per our "Predator" conversation tonight, here's a gallery of Mel's work. I highly recommend checking out her work on the Predator Huntress and (especially) the Predator Queen: One talented lady... (http://www.predatorstuff.com/gallery/index.php?level=collection&id=85)

hey guys: my once in a blue moon update:

i watched Blade Runner and The Thing this week at the Plaza Theatre. Fun, but other crap is all going haywire and wrong.

Grackula: No worries about your absence. We know you've been off working hard and creating. I've constructed a belting apparatus to keep my eyes from bursting from my skull when your LMS3 piece finally drops. It's not pretty, but it's functional. We'll see you out again when the dust settles.

Tammy-Fae Breaker: Two great movies: Synthetic snakes. Replicant soldiers. Rutger Hauer showing us how it's done. And then jumping on board the frozen horror that is a terrific remake! That's how remakes are supposed to be made. Not a blatant shot-by-shot rehashing of some J-Horror rockstar that tanks in the US market. No, ladies and gentlemen. A "Why is that man trying to shoot that dog?" race to blood tests and head crabs!

Don't watch this if you've just eaten, kids. It's filled with ketchup and mayonnaise (and no digital effects!):

TevQS4qgE_Q

Word on the street is Mumm-Ra has been seen hanging out at 5-Points Station. You can bet he's got his beady yellow eyes on you. Stay safe. Run away.

Veered: Good to see you out too. You've got some solid movement cycles down in your animations. Love the monologue with the wee person and the snake.

All: Made the mistake of watching Episode III last night while working into the wee hours of the morning. It hurts, folks. It hurts in my heart.

I will not be out and about tonight for the Thursday meeting. Too much on the pewter work plate to move around. However, I'll be sending out mental blasts of support and productivity to those who do show up.

The Center for Puppetry Arts wants YOU to submit your idea for Xperimental Puppetry Theater!

Puppetry is an art form that combines literature, music, mime, dance and drama with the visual arts. Xperimental Puppetry Theater (XPT) is a forum that offers the opportunity for artists to explore their creative expression within the puppet theater, exploring original puppetry and object theater geared to adult audiences. You may participate as an individual XPT member (that is, participate in someone else's project), or as an XPT Project Director. Pieces must be under ten minutes long and can use any number of the myriad forms of puppetry: shadow, mask, automata, stop-motion film, toy theater, marionettes, etc.

We are pleased to offer funding for new works! Project grants up to $400 may be awarded. In addition, performance space, production space and equipment will be provided as available, leading up to our week-long performance run in May!

The deadline for project proposals is February 7, 2008.

It would be a big undertaking to put something like this together, but if any of you have some idea or concept that we could submit i'd happily volunteer my labor / time / financial support / blood / tears / dedication to get involved. I've always wanted to submit something for this show... hmmm... ROTO the musical? forget i said that... great idea i know. anyways, yeah, if any of you insanely creative people have some cool idea maybe PM or email me.

Monet >>> heh... awesome... that was the best japanese food i've ever had. would it be necessary to RSVP? hopefully i could get up there by 5:30 but on a friday that might be asking a bit much from the uppers here at the rock yard... also: a guy named jay emailed me about the group! thanks for referring! I want to see this new sketchbook you've started up :)

Flipnasty >>> Duuude. Seriously... you have to address Skinless by his proper name. it's Hansel. If you don't do a brief study every other day or so at least he will start chomping at your fingers while you sleep. HARD PLASTIC INCISORED-TERROR. i think i still lean towards the posh entry... i like the design aspect.

King Unicorn >>> ok you changed your Username how long ago? KNow that i still crack up on a regular basis when i read king unicorn. Flawless victory on the username creation. Grack told me about her TD entry and it is going to require special hardware to keep skulls from exploding. speaking of exploding... that's some impressive, impressive video. i like how it... just... won't... die....

tammy fae breaker >>> i didn't get a chance to comment on it but your latest sketchbook update is really, really sweet! spindly-legs fleshed out and comin' at ya! we miss you, come say hello soon :)

isn't that veered >>> thanks for sharing the link to your work and for coming out on tuesday: hope to see ya around soon.

STEP AWAY! Rosie is seriously kind of worn the fuuck out from a long day installing ball turret's-syndrome onto that huge gray building near Ben's old apartment ... then every no-talent jackkkass with a mouse and a mission has to go abusing the image as if it were the only propaganda to be spoofed anywhere.

OH SHIT...
someone just threw a gauntlet...

A while ago you filled a 128 page sketchbook in five days--do you think you could do something like that again? It produced some great stuff. Maybe on a much smaller scale, say fifty drawings in one day. With color. If time is an issue, don't bother, and just keep on keepin' on. But... if you ever feel kinda crazy....

50 drawings in one day / full color is not possible for me at this time. but ... maybe let's say a moleskine in 1 week? full color? balls-to-wall color pencil / tria ink / markers / animation pencil and insane expressionist fiesta? tape shit in.... not let up... collage... what ever the hell it takes....

let's leave it at a maybe for now... but wow, cool challenge.

So, if you haven't gathered from the previews yet, Cloverfield appears to be The Godzilla Witch Project...Or The Blair Gamera Project...Or The Blair Witch Unleashed...Whichever you prefer...

Because I have a special place in my heart for Kaiju (I have the knit cap to prove it), I'm actually a bit excited to see how they handle it. I'm curious if the monster assaulting New York will fall on its face a' la the American remake of Godzilla or if it will go about rockin' the place like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man...

RSVP here if you'd like to paint the next four Wednesday nights with model Catherine Pica:

Atlanta Painting Meetup Group
http://painter.meetup.com/91/

Dates:
Wednesday nights, starting 1/16
1/16, 1/23, 1/30, 2/6

Time:
8-10pm

Location:
Mattress Factory Studios
Downtown Atlanta (north of Grant Park)
When you RSVP I'll forward directions/parking info

Cost:
$40 payable at first session, includes FOUR sessions

Additional info:
We're treating this as you would treat a class -- no drop-ins, RSVPs only. This ensures that we can start with a new model after every four sessions, and allows us to hire one model for 4 consecutive sessions....you're not going to get this with ASIFA, Art Mondays, or most other Atlanta painting events. With most sessions I'm aware of, the model changes every week, which sucks for painting. I'd like to follow-up this series with another model starting 2/13.

It appears that Operation: Roofies in the Odwalla (known formerly as Operation: Goosing the Superfood) was a success. We'll be prepared to expand our operations to the global stage in February.

G-Gem: We missed you out tonight. Bobby dropped by, scoring a Repeat Offender badge and tossing out some solid crits on O'Nasty's xenotastic design. Ethax and Fingerless both produced some wonderful reference material (and some solid sketching). And Dre and The Glamazon rocked yarns (new knit chapeau skills ready to be put to the test when you have some colors in mind).

That gurgling you hear is just the usual misshapen creatures that lurk with the battered pages of my sketchbook.

Barbarino: Hope you get a solid turnout tomorrow and the project kicks off strong. I'm hungry for February: Valentine's Day chocolates, red, red ribbons, and an opportunity to scare up the doves of art from the flat fields.

Missed the rest of you tonight. All of you. Every last one of your little button noses and briny crab claws...

Barbarino: Hope this cold doesn't keep you down for long. Get well soon!

Monet: That shirt design came out great. Very much in your style. I'm a fan of the elements you pull into your work (and, of course, your cabinet displays).

Website: It is time to shake things up a bit. I still believe a brochure site with basic information and not a lot of parts that need constant maintenance is the way to go. However, we should probably lighten/brighten the design, revamp the gallery section to include more recent (and stronger) designs from our portfolios, and reconsider how we talk about CATL.

Do we want to see a larger membership? Do we want to start connecting with local businesses/companies that need artists (game developers, design companies, freelance gigs, etc.)? Do we want to maintain our present level of activity, or do we want to see CATL rise to the next level? Of course, it depends on what everyone wants to take away from this, and - of course - everyone providing a bit of effort to help us achieve our goals beyond showing up on Tuesday nights.

I have no strong feelings one way or the other. I believe CATL has been a CATaLyst for a number of bright opportunities and, as 2008 passes, several of us will be making positive and professional steps forward based on our CATL experiences. So, suggestions? Comments? Ideas or solutions?

I'm with KU on the notion of a simple brochure site: I think something that's relatively simple but gets the point across about who we are and what we do is really, really important to get up asap. It's gonna be important for you guys to get involved with this process, because it is afterall our group. It doesn't have to be a huge process, but some collective brainstorming will be necessary. If someone wanted to step up and volunteer to host the site too that would be very much appreciated, as my days here in this fine city are ... finite. The actual design isn't too terribly tough to do, but your support in providing artwork for a gallery, photographs for the design, and most importantly a sense of the purpose of the site will go a very very long way.

anyways, think about it and post up some ideas. darth vader helmet design and sand dollar websites sound great cory. :)

All > While I may be in the minority here, I haven't attended the Tuesday night drawing sessions to date because the location just isn't convenient for some of us intown folk. Perimeter rush hour traffic as we all know, sucks big time. My vote would be move the Tues. night session to Buckhead, to a funkier locale, like Cafe Intermezzo? I'm up for bringing back Greasy Sunday Majesty or something similar if Tues. night's location stays as is.

Grack > - I brought up the Tues night venue in response to this question from KU below....IMHO, I think CATL would attract a larger following if it had meetings intown - a la ASIFA, Atlanta Artists Center, Boozer Doodle, and many other art events in the Atlanta area. The animation studios are located intown - Turner Studios, Primal Screen, Spin, Fathom Studios, etc. Based on this, it would make sense to move the meetings to a locale not far from these places...if a larger membership is the goal. But I live intown, so I'm biased.

KU posted:

Just to chime in on the discussion of moving our meetings: I don't think we'll be able to get too far away from our present location. As it stands, it seems to be the most central location for the majority of our members (still causing some to drive through heavy traffic and extending their time on the road - which I'd love to build a CATL-only lane to help by-pass...)

If anything, our change in location will have to be in venue. Personally, I feel that there are some nights when we've outgrown what Seattle's Best/Land of Ovensong has to offer in the Borders. Then again, there are some nights where only three of us arrive and operate quite nicely around the table. It really is hit or miss and makes it difficult to gauge finding a suitable replacement location.

Taco Mac would be great when its warmer, and we can escape the uninterrupted cacophony that is televised sporting events by sitting outside (and enjoying stiff, top-shelf liquors). Any restaurant is going to require us to have a projected head count in advance and that could pose an additional set of challenges. Bars, coffee shops, establishments like Chipotle with seating for those that aren't interested in purchasing a meal are our best bet.

We might as well consider a new venue while we're shaking the bovine-headed monkeys from the trees. I just don't think moving outside of the Dunwoody area is going to provide us with as central a hub for Tuesday's mini-meets.

ahem. woohoo... ahem. *gets thy guggem-bearings....

CATLane?!?!? Oh hell no: We're building a whole damn catl tunnel. I already got the dynamite.

On the subject of the tuesday mini meets, i really think that a funwoody location is really best for this group of artists. something that hasn't been mentioned and is really crucial to this argument is the wealth of reference materials, magazines, and artbooks (and that's not to mention coloring supplies!) available there that we all love to refer to, laugh at, and share. Where would we be if we couldn't gawk at horrible comic art inside one of marko's fabulous covers? or laugh at the weekly soccer mom's bible study meeting? For intown folks like myself, yeah, it's a small bit of a drive. but it's worth it. The folks who live closer understand that and... to date, ... umm.... geez how long have we been doing this now??? 2 years? ... i have never heard any of you gracious souls complain because my intown, late-artist lifestyle keeps me from getting there until 7:30 or 8. Hell, even later at times. we start it at 7ish because usually by then, save some insanely unusual traffic, most of the thick stuff on the main thoroughfares is out of the way. And really... even if i'm in the car a little longer than my normal scurrying hither and thither requires, it's still only a margin of 10 or 15 more minutes tops. I specifically time my trips based on when i'm guessing traffic has died down, and haven't run into significant problems, ever. It's not that far outside the perimeter. I usually end up driving home after a satisfying CATL tuesday meeting ON peachtree street, and it doesn't take that long. moving things to buckhead borders (really... the only comparable, location-compromising bookstore type place where we could gather) would make things much more difficult for our dear OTP CATL who are so very regular and crucial to these meetings. And let's not forget my eternal mantra: if GrendelGrack is out, Guggemmaneuver's gonna pout. Not to mention the fact that buckhead traffic over there is bad nearly around the clock, not just at peak times. and when holidays are nearby it can get to be impossibly frustrating trying to navigate the unholy crux of lenox mall and that other mall, "phipps plaza" i think? Anyway, being in Funwoody though not midtown, Decatur, L5P, Buckhead, or some other intown spot might be helpful for growth, the sanity of the small and sacred fold that we have here is a more important factor to consider. You guys are like a weird art-family to me, and these meetings keep me grounded in a way... and about growth: healthy growth is happening, we've all seen it firsthand. Just look at nofingers... he grew two whole new pinky-stubs last week! seriously: we've got a very, very good thing here, and that we have a huge, huge cast of people who pop in and out as they find convenient and that moreover there's no problem whatsoever with that is a really, really special thing. the quiet meetings where it's only myself, ethax, and fingerless are really great. but the meetings where we occupy every damn table in the whole cafe are always full of rioutous comradery and not to mention plenty of artistic breakthroughs and inspiration. The latter style meetings are becoming more and more common too.

just my ¢2.

not that I have been involved long enough to really put in my opinion.....but something that could be compromised is having the meetings be in town for one month and in Dunwood another month, or something to that fashion...I notice that you all are fairly quick on stating the status of a meeting so I think people would have enough time to adjust.

Oh and to note on the weather today...as I am at cnn right now....it's looking like a heavy snow "warning" until 9am. It's already a little wet outside so the supplies might get peed on by the heavy snow warning gods....who relay their messages through omniscient green screens controlling puppets called....meteor-olo-gist. hahah man it's sooooo 6:30 am on a Sat and I am wide awake....eating oatmeal.

good morning jcatlanta,....and everyone else.
Last i checked we parcipate in boozer doodle, so that does happen when people have the funds and time for it. as for the move, come on. thursedays, catl memebers meet way out where its easier for them at a starbucks, correct me if im wrong, but theres nothing saying the people who live inside the perimeter cant meet on a thurseday closer in.
I live about 3 minutes from M street, the drive isnt bad. Its actually the easiest one i have during the week.

im not trying to insult anyone, im just adding my thoughts on this. (im not sayin, im just sayin)
I know it might be a hike but i recomend to everyone on the thread, weather permiting(never thought i would say that south of the M/D line) to make the drive to funwoody at least once.

thurseday meet ups inside the perimeter, (as long as Syracuse isnt on tv that night) im open to sugestions.

and all that stuff about growth couldnt be more true. I have a debt of gratitude to be paid to this group for where i am now and the steps everyone has taken to help me become a better artist. i would make the drive even if it took 2 hours to get there, but anything over that is just madness :pirate: !
