#19 of my daily sp's kinda like it. Though, again, the eyes maybe a little too big.

painted this one in the dark using the monitor as my light source, ill try to get better values next time... used only one funky brush that i made

http://www.artground.com/forum/sk82.jpg

danomight: those lips are looking pretty flat(evident on the opening), wider range of values would be good too... keep it up

skuli: thanks :) yeah those are some big eyes.. :P how long do these usually take you? u should spend more time on one really fleshing out the values to the max but before going on a shading fest making sure the proportions are correct

bort: crazy :)

arghmisfit - Thanks for the crit man, really pushed me to give it another go today. You have some great sp's so far, keep it up.

Skuli - Same as argh said, eyes a bit big, but looks cool none the less, gives it a bit of a caricature feel. I have a bunch of sp's where I run out of steam as well. keep on postin.

Used 4b lead this time instead of hb to get a batter value range, I think I tend sculpt the drawing a bit better with softer lead.

Hey. This is my first art post on these forums so, I'm just introducing myself with a little self portrait.

Nothing much to say. Just a quick pencil sketch I did a couple nights ago. Not too much shading, but I havn't sketched in a while, and havn't done a self portrait in... ever.

Unfortunately, my scanner is not big enough to get the whole image, so I scanned it in two sections and merged them together in PS. The problem is that the lip at the edge of the scanner forces the paper a few milimeters off the surface, so the image gets slightly darker at the edge. And when I merged it, there was an ugly dark area going through the middle. Oh well. Didn't feel like cleaning it up at the time, so here ya go.

http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/2628/selfportraitsketchsmall2ev.jpg

Hopefully, I'll be getting a 9x12 WACOM Intuos3 soon, and I can finally do some digital painting.

ok, worked on this for about an hour this morning.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v23/Bhuddistmonk/SP100705plusanhour.jpg

Dune - Keep going. Painting with color is mostly about getting the values correct so it defines the form. I would do more black and white value studies of your face, and focus on getting the structure and form correct before you add the confusing extra dimension of color to the mix.

skuli - I think you should find a three-way mirror so you can draw your head from different points of view. If you cant get one of those the next best thing is to put the mirror in your lap and look down at it, or something. just try all kinds of different stuff, and add in a harsh light sources like Arghmistfit to create some dense shadows.

Been awhile since I've had the time to participate in anything. I started this self-portrait last night and hope to finish it soon. It's been enlarged from a thumbnail sketch so it's still a little pixellated.

Probably the best one I've done so far, though. Drawn immediately after reading some inspiring advice from Andrew Jones.

Yeah - I hadn't attempted a single colour for a couple of months before that post. So now I'm back on the black... and white. But damn it was fun playong with colour - even if it was for just a day.

Gone a bit skewed but...

This is an open thread, yeah? If not delete this or whatever.

Kinda grim first work post, but gotta start somewhere and I don't want to be the guy who just lurks in the lounge and never posts their own stuff.

This is the first time I've picked up a brush for about 8 years and I had an hour and a half to do it in, hopefully I'll get better.

LadyLioness:
Like you said yourself, you need more darker and probably some lighter tones as well in there..it looks kinda flat. The proportions seem to be right although the right eye may be a bit high compared to the tilted head and the other eye.

Scooterella:
That's nice for 30 minutes. The values are pretty well done. Maybe a highlight in the eye would make it stronger.
I would love to see an update of this one.

Dunefish:
I like the left eye, it has a dreamy and yet clear look.
I would suggest checking more carefully in which direction you place your strokes..you're losing form this way. I like the high contrast and I'm looking forward to the next piece.

arghmisfit:
Well that's just dope..not much to crit really.

Flake:
I like the texture of your painting. The shirt part is too flat in my opinion and you could also use more tones in the facial area to make it stand out more.

Jens:
Really, I'm still impressed by the number of drawings you make..hehe. So diverse and so inspiring..keep it up.

dunefish - very nice, do many of these and just try different views and angles. Stay aware of the structure: the structure of the face is what makes you look the way you do.

http://website.leidenuniv.nl/~s0369519/drawing/sp%2018-10-2005_masked.jpg

The mask was added later and is meant to be metaphoric. I have a sulfurous (is that the right word?) feeling lately and sometimes it feels like I can't breathe normally.

Not totally symmetrical...moved around too much i Guess.

t.m0: I think the eyes should be more on the same level..judging from the rest of the face..like the nose and lips..your head seems to be pointing straight forward so the eyes look a bit funny because one is higher than the other. You can see it more clearly when you take the image and flip it horizontally. I like the sketchy look though and the fact that you've only drawn the eyes, nose and mouth..it really makes you focus on the expression of the face.

Yeah, you're spot on about the shirt, it was black but it wouldn't be that black. I think your also right about the "more tones", like I said though, rush job for a college hand in date.

I like your latest one, although I do prefer the version without the mask.

Hi everyone I'm running a sketchbook here on CA, but sincs I found this thread too, I thought why not post my charcoal sp here as well.

Really dig the effort everyone has shown throughout this thread, very inspiring!

Hey Rebecca, nice work. I'd suggest "finishing" it. Not that it looks bad (it looks sweet actually) but it looks like you were "afraid" to draw your face as a whole and instead focused on the eyes and your mouth. Hope you understand what i mean, pm if you dont get the meaning of my rant. ;)
