April 2nd, 2003, 08:26 AM
eggplant wizard from Kid Icarus http://snoot.org/i/wuss/vg/eggplantl.gif
April 2nd, 2003, 10:38 AM
Lookin good so far davi I love the choice...looks awesome hehe. I wouldn't crop the edges like you have done though I would back off a bit (camera angle I mean) and give the character more room to breathe. Perhaps the cropping is just in the wrong place...I could be wrong that's just my first impression. Awesome though hehe...you gonna fully render this out or move on to another one?
I started one for frankenstein but since the theme switched I have to think of something else...I might finish this not sure.
http://www.mindcandyfilms.com/jons_uploads/Frankenstein step 1.jpg
I was thinking of doing strider...do you remember that game strider...that would be kind of cool. I also was thinking of redoing ninja gaiden...we'll see I guess...
Maybe I could redo a boy and his blob...do you remember that game hehehe
April 2nd, 2003, 10:57 AM
i'm just cropping it so the piece isn't HUGE. i'm doing the staff and all that.
Yeah i wish we would have changed the theme faster :\ sorry bout that mind candy..
April 2nd, 2003, 11:09 AM
Hey that's really coming along nice Davi...that's gonna be awesome hahahah. I love it! Maybe you could have the eggplants dangling off of the staff like a shaman or something. A couple things to be careful of as you are painting this...his right hand is wrapped around the staff at a little bit of a weird angle. Perhaps make his arm a bit longer to make up the angle or bring the staff closer. Also his left arm and shoulder seem a little off. I know it's in the early stages I just wanted to let you know before you got heavily into it (you probably already saw it).
No worries about changing the theme. I am going to contribute but my stuff stinks at this point anyways so I am just contributing for myself and just to support the contest. No worries...now I get to paint both hehe.
April 2nd, 2003, 01:01 PM
Here's the original character:
Jay McCray, from Journey to Silius...the plot is something along the lines of terrorists killed your dad, so you decide (in classical NES fashion) to wage a one man war against them, even though the terrorists are all like hoppy robots and stuff...doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but the music and gameplay were great :) Here's some quick sketches I did last night...
April 2nd, 2003, 04:17 PM
Davi - that eggplant wizard is great. It honestly made me laugh out loud like a maniac. Cannot wait for the finished piece!
I already started some preliminary sketches of my own for thunderdome - COMING SOON TO THREAD NEAR YOU
April 2nd, 2003, 10:12 PM
eggplant wizard is a genius idea... cant wait to see it finished
heres my first thought when you mention classic games
however i dont think its contest-worthy, im gonna pick a different character and submit a real one later
April 3rd, 2003, 10:18 AM
Scott O'Conner from Kabuki Quantum Figther.
Weird game where you had to kill your enemies with your hair. I enjoyed a lot.
Here´s the first sketch.
April 3rd, 2003, 04:18 PM
that was one of my favorite games... good choice
April 3rd, 2003, 04:58 PM
^i did OC with davi. I created yoshi, as an amputee. he has no arms. davi did eggplant man above me (in the wpe).
April 3rd, 2003, 05:45 PM
Harrington, I'm glad you decided not to go with Pac-Man. That's the one I'm doing. :D
waka waka waka waka waka waka
April 3rd, 2003, 06:52 PM
I thought Bionic Commando was one of the the best games ever!
I havn't done any sketchs for this yet. I have been busy with other work..and sick.
I just figured I would post what I was planing on doing.
Here is my first sketch...
April 3rd, 2003, 07:37 PM
you should do master D
April 4th, 2003, 12:22 AM
I decided to try doing Kefka, from Final Fantasy III (or VI.. the numbering of these games is all screwy):
here is the original:
... and another version of the later, more powerful, Kefka:
Still have Bahamut on the brain though... May give that a go too.
April 4th, 2003, 11:21 AM
Very, very, very rough. From the Lost Vikings. Blizzard recently re-released the game and so I thought how could I change them?
Apparently not very much, basically just starting with some rough sketches. Here's my first of the Viking with bow and arrows and sword :) I think I'll do the actual revamping of the characters after I get a good feel for what their functions are in the team. Maybe took me 20minutes...
April 5th, 2003, 10:10 AM
davi was making a skinny birdie from StreetFighter
i was making a redo of the boy from secret of mana.
April 7th, 2003, 11:25 AM
well i guess i will play with you lot: i am getting more and more focused on the concept work side of my folio. i had put this up on the 'its finally finished' board but only one person responded:/... please tell me if its awful.. its a new style for me so i am unsure about it myself.
i think i will do a few entries for this if i have time: i need to build my skills and this looks like a perfect oportunity for me to do it .- very relevant to the kind of folio i want to build.
i will go delete my old post....
heres the image:
April 8th, 2003, 07:15 PM
i don't know if "soulreaver" is classic or not but i did some drawings for it...if you say "it's not classic" i will change the subject...
here are some redesign sketches of soulreaver
April 9th, 2003, 10:13 PM
I actually don't think of him as very 'classic', Soul reaver came out in 1999 that's only a few years ago.
if you did the first Kain from blood omen i would let it go as classic but even that is pushing it
April 10th, 2003, 07:42 AM
I've decided to enter for this one, and I've chosen to revamp those cute little rascals Bubble Bobble. I remember playing this when I was wee girlie, and I enjoyed it very much...
If the link doesn't work, soz (I'll try to fix it...)
April 10th, 2003, 10:34 AM
weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee - cutsie!!!
Bubble bobble! Great choice!! *whistles bubble-bobble tunes* That was one of the games I also were thinking of doing, but I laid those plans aside for a even cooler game! ;)
Well see when I dare to post them... ;)
April 10th, 2003, 11:00 AM
We don't need this post anymore... or the images I got my mind made up far down...
thanks to Adam, lol.
April 10th, 2003, 12:53 PM
i think redesigning a fully-detailed character who has been visually represented in any number of formats (2d games, 3d games, traditional animation, action figures...) sort of defeats the purpose of this contest. My 2 cents, anyways...here's my post from the thunderdome thread, that seemed (?) to go unchallenged by the mods, so i'll assume it is at least close to the mark:
"i think the point of this contest was to take a very nearly abstract blob of color (or retro-instruction book illustration that in no way resembles said blob) that for whatever reason has emotional/nostalgic value for you, and to breathe new life into it, and to make it something that represents both the way you respond to the character and game, but also what the game was originally about. The challenge is supposed to be in placing all the nostalgia/emotion of the original game or that period of your childhood or whatever into that one picture, the inspiration for which is a total of 64 little blocks of color, or a black-and-white, nickel-sized instruction book illustration Choosing a well-developed character that has been repeatedly rendered in 3D would seem to defeat this purpose." Again, if i'm wrong mods, please correct! Otherwise...yeah. :) Hope i'm helping...
April 11th, 2003, 01:10 AM
not to be terribly blunt, but dont you guys get it?
the point is to make an abstract blob of color into a very detailed representation of what that character was meant to be.
since the original (indistinguishable, pixelated, NOT DONE IN 3D) character is NOT VERY DETAILED, this will:
A) be the FIRST 3D detailed representation of that character.
B) be challenging because of it being the FIRST, and
C) be completely ORIGINAL AND CREATIVE.
redesigning characters that have already been rendered in 3D,(whether in the game or on TV, Mr. dragonballz) completely misses the point of making the first DETAILED 3D REPRESENTATION OF THAT CHARACTER.
this is not to take away from the creativity involved in designing the character the way you thought they should've been made. but redesigning a character that was CREATED in a very detailed and original way does NOT leave alot of room for creativity and innovation.
sure you can change the clothes, the hair, the colors, but how much can you alter and replace before the original idea of what that character was meant to be is gone?
starting with a detailed character leaves alot of opportunity for cool pictures, but not alot of room for very original ideas. its hard to draw an creative, original, brand new something when a new perfect, highly detailed picture is right in front of you.
a perfect example of what should be done is android's project on turning original pixelated samus into what you've all seen in metroid prime. now its our turn.
it does not matter if the game is 10 years old or so if its not a CLASSIC! see dragonballz, see legacy of kain, see other games that have well rendered ideas of characters.
go oldschool, characters that look like they were made in fucking paintbrush with 36 pixels. something that forces you to be original and essentially MAKE SHIT UP!
April 11th, 2003, 03:56 AM
a 27 minute rough, would like some crits/comments as to where i should go with this. thanks.
April 11th, 2003, 04:03 AM
Adam and skarycory-
I could have not said it better myself, that is exactealy what i hoped you guys would get out of this contest,
April 11th, 2003, 04:47 AM
come on guys.. take some time and stray a little further from the origional. thats what this things all about..
and if you dont get your act's together quick like im gonna ownzor you all with my 31337 game MonZtoR.. :D
i apologise for the leet speak.. it wont happen again.
April 11th, 2003, 08:57 AM
Yeah thats what I thought the contest was about Adam and Skarycory.
At first I though about doing Frog for Chrono Trigger. But if you change if from a frog well hes not what the character was meant to be, if you even change him from the reluctant knight, you change the story of the game..
Therefore I will probably do either Magus, whose character was basically "I am an evil badass" or White Mage from FF.
April 11th, 2003, 09:25 AM
Lemme know what you guys think...I was trying to flesh out some Q-Bert designs
April 11th, 2003, 10:37 AM
Well I realized that my first idea was really off...
and Adam was right so I got a better idea anyway.
I'm going to remake, the Dark Knight: Cecil Harvey
Here are some screenshots of the guy...
I can't find the other images but thats about it... maybe you find some more, but I've seen some art of it and played the game so I get the idea of his character and image...
thats about... :D
good jobs so far guys---
April 11th, 2003, 01:49 PM
A more realized sketch over my lunch break...I hid in an unused meeting room hehe
April 11th, 2003, 07:50 PM
(Sorries-- deleted my post-- running outta image storage at imagemagician)
April 11th, 2003, 08:51 PM
it would be cool if you redesigned the ghosts in pacman more like that wizadry painting.
April 11th, 2003, 10:04 PM
Here is some sketches of simon from Castlevania
And here is some of strider
April 11th, 2003, 10:59 PM
Yo...i thought id get a piece of the action.
Anybody remember Vectorman? coolest hero on the genisis no doubt =)
heres my rendition...quick concept.
Sadly i probably wont be able to take part in the comp...no tablet means no colors =P
April 12th, 2003, 03:00 AM
well i figured that there would be about 1000 pac-man posts
soo i thought i would add one more...
April 12th, 2003, 12:31 PM
Heh, I just couldn't resist the opportunity to redesign the game that took away so much of my young life. I played through Dragon Warrior at least 5 times. I remember the excitement of feeling as if I was truly on a quest.
Here is my first WIP of Golem.
April 12th, 2003, 07:41 PM
Thanks for the input! I've put it in my work...
Hyborian: Man, I really got the Hellraiser vibe off of your work-- but I dunno, man-- if *I* looked like that I don't think I'd be running from all the ghosts in that maze...
Bobo_the_Seal & Helltaxi: I like the stuff you're going with! It looks really great! Esp. Helltaxi-- very moody!
April 12th, 2003, 10:58 PM
Q-bert!!thats awesome mindcandyman!! keep pushing!!
Bobo that stuff looks great--are you gonna redo the main hero too?
April 14th, 2003, 01:46 AM
Nice start Bobo! i played the shit out of Dragon Warrior man.
i wish they would release the rest of them after 3 in the states. id paly that shit today.
did you ever get to catch the dragon warrior cartoon back in the day? my brother has them all recorded. that show was titts.
April 14th, 2003, 08:21 AM
I loved dragon warrior too! Was a fantastic game. Took me forever to beat it but I did hehe. That golem looks fantastic Bobo...so cool.
Tyboogie - Thanks man I will keep working on it...qbert is funny hehe.
April 14th, 2003, 10:08 AM
Im going to have a go at this guy. If you owned a ZX Spectrum you might remember him from such games as Lords of Midnight or Doomdark's Revenge.
He is one of the very first characters I met in computer games when I was a very small child.
April 14th, 2003, 10:36 AM
man I don't know about this crap. don't laugh too hard.
April 14th, 2003, 12:53 PM
Yeah! "I got a pocket full of quarters and I'm headed to the arcade!" LOL...this gives me Pac-Man fever Mitch! He never looked so cool.
April 14th, 2003, 01:17 PM
LOL Mitch! I don't even know if I should enter now. X.x Your's is so good! *cannot stop laughing* Pac Man looks too cool! There should be a major bonus on that for the creativity! I couldn't have even conjured up such a cool creation! ^^ I feel a little inspired *curses her teacher for not letting her draw in class*
April 14th, 2003, 01:49 PM
Awesome bobo, Im workin on Erdrick and the Dragonlord. Golem looks nice.
April 14th, 2003, 01:59 PM
qbert compositions. I think I am going to try to start my qbert painting tonight. How do these compositions look...any of them worthwhile? They are super sketchy I know...but I didn't want my co-workers to see them. I did these on 1 inch sticky pads at my desk at work...I am thankful for the scanner here at work. Scanned them in at 300 dpi hehe. Lemme know what you think.
April 14th, 2003, 05:07 PM
Wow! Mitch, that pacman is really amazing! very very cool
Here is my crappy attempt at kabuki quantum fighter
I dont know if i´m following the rigth direction with this "diabolic Chucky" kind of thing.... It looks more like a clown than a fighter or a kabuki actor... I´ve to think and work much more on it
April 14th, 2003, 11:47 PM
Here's a page of me noodling out ideas for my Blaster Master redesign.
April 15th, 2003, 12:19 PM
Well the Android has really raised the bar on Joust designs. I need to spend more time at the drawing board. Don't have the guts just yet to post a painted image after those incredible designs. But in the meanwhile here is a doodle of the Shadowlords ride. Shadowlords are the Big baddies, just above the Bounders and Hunters.
I'll have more finished images this week or so.
Mcotie, Love the PacMan.
and MindCandy..Qbert was my second choice, I'm really looking forward to your final designs. Love the jumbled blocks in the background
April 15th, 2003, 01:10 PM
mcotie- very cool.
blackhand- i'm doing master blaster as well:D
April 15th, 2003, 01:38 PM
Haven't posted in a long time, but when I heard about this contest, I had to jump in. I played this game in the mall all the time, it was the first video game I played that had a chair that responded to the joystick. It was kickin', and nintendo had a weak version, but I played the crap out of it just the same. Here is my quicky of the hero from Space Harrier:
I'll post more of his bike/rocket/gun thing as I develop it further.
April 15th, 2003, 05:54 PM
I have a new one, too, thanks to the comments of Fozzybar:
I decided to push the boundaries of what pac-man was and I came up with a techno-archeologist /treasure hunter of sorts. Comments before I begin to ink this guy?:D
April 16th, 2003, 01:28 AM
What do you guys think?
April 16th, 2003, 01:34 AM
I know it's not much as of yet, but I always like to get the pose and attitude down before moving any further.
I think the boots may be too large for the aristocratic look I'm going for, and he may be too short at 6-61/2 heads tall. What do you think? (it's Edgar from FF6 by the way)
Also, does anyone know where I can host my pictures? I don't need very much space, but I can't afford anything more expensive than free ;)
April 16th, 2003, 10:06 AM
Knocked this up in my spare time over the last 2 days. I know it doesn't really fit the criteria of the competition very well but still thought I'd see what you guys think.
Disclaimer: Any similarities to Saddam Hussein are purely coincidental.
April 16th, 2003, 03:53 PM
when are these due?
April 17th, 2003, 12:02 PM
that realy is saddam hussein
April 17th, 2003, 03:02 PM
Little late in the game but, here's my start. I'm actually surprised more people didn't go for Dig Dug. There's a lot of fun stuff to work with. One thing I'm wondering about right now is whether it's unrealistic, for rigging puposes, to have a hose attaching his pump to his backpack. I really want him to have a cool teched-out pack but I've put a motor and compressor on the pump to be on the safe side. I'd really appreciate some feedback on this issue. I might just make a sheath for his equipment as I've noticed none of the early visualization address how he holds the pump and the shovel.
April 17th, 2003, 11:19 PM
awww man i was thinking about doing dig dug, maybe i still will.
heh, id give you some feedback but thinnk i m gonna save it for myself
April 17th, 2003, 11:52 PM
keenerbean - REAL good, man. the view, the idea, very cool. i look forward to seeing the finished one.
April 18th, 2003, 12:34 AM
Yes I suck. Better sketches to come, hopefully...
April 18th, 2003, 02:35 AM
Hey keenerbean, I like that perspective. Cool boots, too. Those critters down the tunnel remind me of those little fuzzle-things in Munch's Odyssey (xbox). Looking forward to the colored pic.
April 18th, 2003, 02:54 AM
Here's a doodle of q-bert... whatta freak...
April 18th, 2003, 02:40 PM
Kid Icarus: all grown up:
I loved that game!!
April 19th, 2003, 03:01 AM
here's some more sketches:
still working on colors/unifying elements/whatever....i like where it's going though.
April 19th, 2003, 03:04 AM
nice sketches, guys. i really like the ones with the professional black boxes behind them. ;)
April 22nd, 2003, 12:57 AM
I just finished doodling the pilot and his anti-gravity gun thingy he rides:
April 22nd, 2003, 05:50 AM
I've allready finished mine a couple of days ago, but I still don't know where to post the finished picture...I. Should it be a finished-thread or sent to one of the board leaders? Atleast I don't feel I have the authority to create such a thread
April 22nd, 2003, 12:18 PM
April 22nd, 2003, 07:41 PM
more on the bike....
although, I doubt I will finish by the deadline, my son is about to be born any day (well, actually, any minute), and I am sure he will take precedence over the contest.
April 22nd, 2003, 07:41 PM
I have a question....
should I remove the exhaust pipe thing? it doesn't seem to fit right...
April 22nd, 2003, 10:59 PM
yea i would afro---lookin good---better hurry tho! one week left
April 24th, 2003, 03:40 PM
Anyone remember this game for C64? You will as soon as you hear the music. Unfortunately, this site only has the intro.
Forbidden Forest. Here's what I've got so far on it. I couldn't fit everything in so I had to nix the ghosts, dragon and demon. I'm going to have a skeletal hand or two coming from the ground where the guy is standing.
April 24th, 2003, 04:45 PM
Simple pencil rough of the White Mage from the infamous Final Fantasy 1. The only FF game I have ever played... Never could figure out if the White Mage was male or female. Probably male, but I'm trying to even up the score a little bit.
Not sure how to render this one...hm.
April 25th, 2003, 08:17 PM
Anybody doing Guardian Legend? That game was amazing.
I thought about doing it but I think it may have been too obscure. Instead I will toss my hat into the Joust ring, but following Androids drawings will be tough.
The finals are looking great so far....
April 28th, 2003, 08:57 AM
I heard about this over on eatpoo (bite me) and I thought I'd give it a shot.
Bionic Commando was one of my favorites on the NES. The concept was amazing. I used to draw him in the back of all my notebooks.
Here's some sketches I made last night.
The first two are sort of oldschool (trying to get the feel for him):
This one made this morning is more in the direction I want to take him:
April 30th, 2003, 05:00 PM
I've been busy until just now. I won't be able to finish anything probably.
I did some NES MegaMan characters in GBA MM Zero style. Well it was supposed to be, I never got pass the tiny thumbnail sketching state. I resized for proper scale so it looks a bit crummy.
I can't do digital lineart and the printer is not installed yet, plus I have no light table.
I'll see if I can finish one tomorrow (1st may) if that's ok. I'm really tired now, haven't slept much for 2 days. I guess I have to do some digital refining and inking in PS even tho I sawk at it.
May 1st, 2003, 08:19 PM
Cool lil' buncha sketches there, Prom :chug:
