I thought I'd do this thread since I dont see one around - but post some images, painting, whatever that inspire you:
The Gulf Stream by Winslow Homer - I dont know what it is about it, but this painting has always scared the shit outta me. I know its got to do with the sharks, I'm pretrified of the sea, but its one of those rare paintings that actually makes me fee dread.

he really catches the feel when you are out on the sea. The kinda bright sky but also dull and grey. It´s hard to explain.
edit: no I didn´t post a winslow homer because magic did it, I just really like this because I´ve spent quite some time at the sea and such.

Homer's ability to take watercolors to an ethereal level is amazing, he camputers the luminosity of water so amazingly well.

Lady Agnew of Lochnaw by John Singer Sargent.
This painting is in the National Gallery of Scotland, in Edinburgh. I've been there a few times, every single time, this is the painting that most stands out. I can sit in front of it for ages and just look... and look... so good.

The Apotheosis of the Slavs, by Alphonse Mucha
Infact all of the Slav Epic totally rules me. Whats really impressive about this and the other paintings of the Epic is their size. This painting is like 15 feet tall, and some of the other 19 paintings are like 20 feet tall and 30 feet across.
also

California, by George Inness
Inness' landscapes do something to me. I love the atmosphereic quality to many of them. They seem less like pictures of a place and time and more like memories or dreams
anyway...theres my contribution :bashful:
BTW more of both of these artists can be found at www.artrenewal.com (infact both these pics came from there)

Actually the book I have says they are egg tempera...Unfortunatly that picture of the Apotheosis is really dark, there's a whole 'nother batch of figures under the large figure's right arm backlit by a peach colored glow...and an image of jesus behind the large figure All of the other paintings of the Epic are impressive as well, but I've had some trouble finding good pics of them....I may scan some from this big Mucha book I have, just to share.

Some new: Timothy Bradstreet, I just picked up a copy of his beautiful new "Maximum Black" book, which is, for all intents and purposes, my new study guide. I've been an admirer of his ever since I picked up an RPG game book featuring his art at a garage sale when I was in highschool. (I never played RPG's, but concept art of that quality was hard to come by then) This is the image that really amazed me. To me nobody does "character" these days like Timothy Bradstreet.

Love his work and can't get enough of it myself...here's my favorite of his:

I have recently found inspiration in painting done by a Ukranian-born artist who is fairly new in the fine arts circuit, Vladimir Kush (not sure about the spelling). I enjoy his art not just for the brilliant colors and composition, but also for the great metaphors that he paints.

DS- I remember the first time I saw that painting of Joan of Arc at the Met. It completely floored me. It was 1997 (I remember because it was the last year that the Rangers made the playoffs, and a security guard came over to me to compliment me on my jersey and predict that we were gonna kick the Devil's ass. I was 14 or 15 at the time and at first terrified I was in trouble for drooling on the painting). To this day I can't exactly put my finger on what enthralls me so about it, but I highly recommend ppl track it down if you're ever near the Met. I can't find a photo anywhere on the web that remotely does it justice. In fact, I feel motivated...maybe I'll head over there right now.

Mechwarriors, for purely negative reasons. (it is like when somebody sees a picture of a starving child in Africa, it inspires them to eliminate hunger or something like that)
and...

Frank Frazetta did this when he was a little kid. I think it's just awesome to see his 'early work' like that, hahah.

and that. That's just awesome. He's such a great painter and all, yet still lives such a macho life.

Yes, in his early twenties he went quite mad and stabbed his father to death. While trying to escape to France he attacked someone else with a straight razor, was aprehended, and spent the next forty years in Bedlam and Broadmore, where he produced the works he's famous for.

Vigo - Bob Peak did a ton of movie posters, most significantly the one sheet for Apocolypse Now. The SoI show was great, though I had the misfortune of timing my visit with that of a group tour with a bunch of old ladies. Speaking of which, that's the last time I checked out the SoI...I wonder what's there now. I will have to check.

also be sure to check out Johann Hendrix. Can't find any decent images on the net, but I've seen his stuff in person when I worked at a museum near-by. Some of his landscapes and portraits are driving me nuts. Looks very digital, but it's all oil on canvas:
