I agree with Ladylioness, that picture is great. really reminds me of the Rubens picture, the St Goerge and the Dragon one. Mainly because of the dynamic moving hourse and the gorgeous red cape.

I second Blacky about russian masters.
I was in Moscow a few days ago, where I admired Repine's wonderful portraits, and his extremely alive group scenes.
Unfortunatly, those XIXth century russian masters are under-represented in our fuckin' snobish country of France...

Here are 2 examples of how subtle he can be, and how quick and essential he can be too... The great consistency of his painting seems to appear very early in his process.

Well, what got me going is some cartoon comics...

Guust Flater, in French Gaston Lagaffe or something like that was pretty inspirational for me. The artist Franquin was my god in those days, still is actually... He also made this one. When he was depressed and near the end of his life... It's called "blacklooking complete".

And then there was another discovery for me, named "Joe bar team"

Dan,

Great memories came flooding back when I saw your post for inspiration. This was one of my two favorite pieces in the Milwaukee Art Museum. I lived and taught there for about 6 years. Like any other painting, to really appreciate it, you have to see it for real. I hate using cliches when talking aout painting but beyond the masterful surface and use of paint this piece comes alive. I seriously wanted to touch and bite this painting every time that i saw it. I don't know that I have ever seen better skin tones. If there are magical pieces this is certainly one. The museum's whole 19th century European Genre collection is magnificent. My other favorite piece there was an Odd Nerdrum. I don't think that anyone else has posted him here. Simply genius and his works are huge. Also included the only piece for which I am actually planning a pilgrimage for - The Ghent Altarpiece by the Van Eycks.

The Apotheosis of the Slavs, by Alphonse Mucha

Infact all of the Slav Epic totally rules me. Whats really impressive about this and the other paintings of the Epic is their size. This painting is like 15 feet tall, and some of the other 19 paintings are like 20 feet tall and 30 feet across.

also

California, by George Inness

Inness' landscapes do something to me. I love the atmosphereic quality to many of them. They seem less like pictures of a place and time and more like memories or dreams

anyway...theres my contribution :bashful:

BTW more of both of these artists can be found at www.artrenewal.com (infact both these pics came from there)
Yea this landscape is a hott one.. I guess the blend of colors is what tends to grab me..

Other than a couple of dead links, they all show up fine for me so I'd say t's likely a setting on your computer, or more likely your internet browser..

If you're on Firefox go to tools > options > content then check "load images" is enabled and that "for originating website only" is unchecked, see if that fixes it.

Heeeeey! I guess I can add some more pictures to everlasting inspirations thread. I would show some more but it's just too much! So these very juicy and intriging photos of "CORNELIUS" will have to do. I really love the way this guy makes music. hey Musicians are artists too.
I love the way he explores senses, sounds and sensations of the world through music! These photos seem to express his music style; visually if you catch my drift! Music, Art and Photography are very strong influences in my part! =D:lens:

Anyway, here's some preliminaries by sargent. The thing I love about the so called masters is that they had no undos or layer properties or anything of the kind. Everything you see is pure markmaking/ brush strokes! Think of it as an image done in one layer :dur:

In 2006 The national gallery of Art had a collection of drawings n display from a wide variety of artist from DaVinci to Winslow Homer. It was impressive, inspirational and educational all in one. I'll look for some of the images.

Here is some of my other favorites.
The Voyage of Life Manhood, Thomas Cole, 1840
Oil on canvas 44 × 32 cm, National Gallery of Art, DC
This is actually part 3 of a series of 4 paintings. The four were all displayed together. The Paintings were so powerful I stood there stunned and was nearly brought to tears by the beauty of it.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c1/Cole_Thomas_The_Voyage_of_Life_Manhood_1840.jpg

Woman with Parasol, Madame Monet and Her Son, Claude Monet 1875
oil on canvas 100x81cm, National Gallery of Art, DC

I know the image has been printed on hundreds of calendars and coffee mugs. To be honest I was a middling fan of impressionism until I saw the originals first hand. There is no comparison between reproductions and the originals.

I know having to explain a picture takes away from it but people wont get this photo otherwise. For anyone not involved in the grip training world, this is Clay Edgin closing an Ironmind #4 gripper. The #4 takes 365lbs of force to close and is considered the ultimate feat of grip strength, only 5 people have ever closed a #4 officially. Something for me to work towards!

119851

Kirk Karwoski squatting 900+lbs

119852

If I could take a picture of it I'd also show a painting by a guy I know, Paul. Alas it's 60'x10' and it wouldn't do it justice anyway. It's dozens of faces and gestures from Paul's mind painted in realistic detail. The real inspiring part is he's completely self-taught, never had a painting class and isn't working from pictures or models.

I saw some Juan Gimenez at the top of the page, here's some more. I love his injection of a fine art kind of sensibility in a comic medium. The first 3 are covers from the Metabaron serie, I don't know where the last came from.

This thread is total tits, can't believe I haven't posted here before.

Some inspirations:

George Braque:

http://www.angelo.edu/faculty/rprestia/1301/images/IN512Braque.jpg
http://jakking.typepad.com/daily/images/braque.jpg
Dig these mainly for the colour choices and the train of thought behind them, it is something i want to translate into my own style and eventually make my own.

Alex Kanevsky:

great images everyone. Well, almost haha.

Thanks dood, straight back atcha!

Whilst we're at it: as many people here know, Wes is a huge influence on my drawings, but the image that really really first got me thinking about layering and movement is this one:

Do I even need to mention the artist?
In quite a few ways I regard him up there alongside Picasso.

Okay, I'm going to do a huuuge dump, but I'm dividing it into stages, to make it easier to tell who did what (no "images 62-72 by Justin Sweet, images 73-76 by Keith Parkinson, " and that sort of thing). I apologize in advance if I happen to repost any images that have already been posted in this thread.

Here's some Breath of Fire 4 and 5 art. I don't know who the artist is, but whoever it was had an amazing design sense. These are some of the most elegantly stylized creatures I've ever found.

I'm going by these guys' website names, to make the easier to look up, in case you want to.

Image 1: Chris Thunig. Aren't those colors amazing?
Images 2-3: Dusso.
Images 4-5: Facezero.
Image 6: Jon Foster. I think this pic is amazing, but I've been tearing my hair out trying to figure out where the priest's legs are. Good thing I have a lot of hair.
All the rest are by the absolutely incredible artist known as Justin Sweet. Muddy colors never looked so good.<3

Now, time for some Keiths! Keith Parkinson and Keith Thompson, respectively. Keith Parkinson is an awesome illustrator, whom I only discovered because of his RIP thread in the lounge, unfortunately.:[ The other Keith, Mr. Thompson, draws some of the best vehicles and robots you're ever likely to see. He also writes some damn interesting descriptions to go along with his art. I don't think I'll have to tell you where one Keith ends and the other begins.:rendered:

And finally, here's a very small (I mean almost microscopic) slice of my conceptart.orgian inspirations. The first two are by M@, the great creature design at the end is by Whiteeeeee, and the rest are by Paper Blue. Paper Blue is his/her website name; I'm not sure of his/her conceptart.org name. S/he has a thread in the Best of Ca section, though. I imagine it took at least three years to do the detail work on some of the more elaborate city scenes.:xpld:

Brendan N- Thanks, man! I decided to remove the Boris image. The creature idea was somewhat inspiring, at least to me, but the image itself was kind of an eyesore. I agree with you on the Keiths and Paper Blue.:jawdrop:

Ohhh, that Boris.

No disrespect to mr. Vallejo, but his work hasn't really stood up well to the test of time, especially the airbrushing. And I really, really dislike the use of bodybuilder physiques in his fantasy work, it's just garish imho. Cool rhino, though. :)

One of my favourite illustrators, and someone I almost always have in mind when I create a character, is Yoshitaka Amano. When I was young and silly, I always preferred Tetsuya Nomura's illustrations, because they were big and obvious and gave you a better sense of what the character looked like. But since I grew out of being a sucker, I've come to appreciate Amano in ways I never thought I would. The way he draws his figures is outrageous. I mean first of all, the way he uses colour and pattern and pose and expression is all pretty garish. But I also mean that the way he draws characters makes it seem that he's not just drawing a figure but also the way that figure projects itself onto the world around it. At the risk of sounding like a tit who talks to much but doesn't say anything, I'll say it's like he's showing you a character's "aura", not just their body.

I mean, if you were in charge of Squaresoft and asked Amano to draw a villain for your game, and he came back to you with this:

http://yoshitaka-amano.kouryu.info/images/final_fantasy_06/04-67.jpg

You would probably think he was completely looney. But he's definitely got something going on behind the eyes.

http://yoshitaka-amano.kouryu.info/images/final_fantasy_06/21-25.jpg

http://yoshitaka-amano.kouryu.info/images/final_fantasy_09/ff9_07.jpg

I've also always been fond of the webcomic A Lesson Is Learned But The Damage Is Irreversible (http://www.alessonislearned.com/). A lot of experiments with art and writing that are worth checking out.

http://www.alessonislearned.com/cmx/lesson031.jpg

And of course, I couldn't list inspirations without including some Surrealists. I heart those doods.

This illustration was probably airbrushed, in this scene some photo images of the band members were added and probably manipulated by merging artwork with the photos.

"i want to work with colors like he does!"

Now those are some wicked skills. They rather look like photographs not paintings.

Some good ones in here, I actually was going to post The Lady of Shalott myself. That painting is incredible. Since that one's taken, this is another what comes to mind:

http://www.illusionsgallery.com/moorish-chief-L.jpg

not a great image there, but if you've seen the painting you know it's boss.

WOW! Awesome, that is some skill he has there.

NO WAI! If that's a painting, then he must be the best artist ever! At first I thought it was a photo. AMAZING!

great thread guys!
there is so much inspiration to be found here, its amazing.
i'm showing some works of Rien Poortvliet, a dutch illustrator/artist (died in 1995). I have about 370 pictures on my computer, he has so much works!
It seems so effortless what he is doing, and that to me is a sign of a great artist.

Here's an image by some guy with the internet name of Nemo Ramjet. I explored some of the projects on his website, and they were some of the most interesting things I've ever found on the internet. Lots of art projects concerning evolution and natural selection and whatnot. Go here (http://www.nemoramjet.com/projects.html) to see some of them.
Here's a bunch of random creature designs he did. I love this image.

Master of orcs, dwarfs, ogres, mutants, dinosaurs, massive creatures, smiling dogs, bulging arm muscles, big chins, dark forests, and large rocks, and all done in a most difficult medium: watercolors.

My faves from his website (http://www.paulbonner.net/). Just check out the design of those huge white rhino-creatures.:xpld:

you can't possibly imagined how grateful i am.I remember some pictures of this guy from like 10 years ago, and i didn't know the name of the artist, thanks :)

Here's an item I bought at auction, original artwork by Ted 'Vincentini' Ireland. Apparently it was cut to be placed into a separate background. I'd appreciate some opinions regarding the quality. It measures 23.5" X 14.5".

tattoo art is ephemeral. it dissappears when the wearer dies. there is no longevity, permanence, or preservation of this work. And some of it fully deserves that kind of persistence...it's a pity. Charlie Wagner was the origin of a lot of the americana stuff that's around nowadays, only there are hardly any surviving examples of his work either on skin or paper. Mostly it's just re-traced copies of his flash.

oil on wood

This doesn't look all that impressive in this reproduction (I sometimes wonder if the reputation of painters in modern times doesn't come down to how good their stuff looks on postcards). I used to visit the (US) National Gallery once a year. I walked around the corner and saw this one day and it was like I walked into a lampost.

The shadow on her neck is red because the light that strikes it shines through her ear. The velvet of her dress looks like it was carelessly scrubbed onto the panel, and yet it follows the countour of the drapery exactly. So, is the fabric rotting away? It's a really intriguing picture.
