Also has a chapter on identifying wether the light is cool or warm and make the shadows the opposite. Theres some corny jokes and stuff too. I have just saved you $65. Spend that money on life drawing sessions instead.

the same shit is in loomis' creative illustration book. for free. Its a scam on impressionable young artists.

and impressionable old artists too, considering some of the people I've met who also value the book. How is it a scam if people are learning and taking inspiration from it? I'd say it's a pretty fair deal. You've inspired me to go re-read my copy.

You guys dont find it a little suspect that the first things on his site are all his little books and dvds? Are the basics of painting that are in his book any different from the ones loomis used? I think people buy his book because its the flashiest one out there with nice glossy pics of his super slick paintings. The basics you can teach are the same no matter what, and there are tons of places online for free that you dont need to waste $60. Some people love wasting money though...

Heres a good thread too. Manley explains lots of stuff about color in a nice and concise manner. The color charts exersice from Schmids book is in that thread somewhere too.

If you are into painting and you can only buy one book, this should be it. Oh, and there is much more in the book then stuff on color.

but i still think its a good book, somewhat overpriced sure, but it has enough good info and stories to make worth reading just about anytime you're in need of inspiration..

I wouldn't say I prefer his paintings over alot of masters, but in terms of technical skills, Draughtsmanship, and a fantastic eye, I'd say schmid is up there with the best of them.

Well, I guess it depends on how you look at it. I know I've paid thousands of dollars to go to school, and I could have saved myself alot of the trouble had I spent less then 100 bucks on this book....bring a blanket, cause Schmid lays it out like that.

Richard Schmid's book is the best book I have read on oil painting.

He doesn't just teach you "color formulas" like "mix burnt umber with viridian green . . . ," he teaches you how to mix colors yourself without the help of a book. He doesn't say "apply small strokes here to give the illusion . . . ," he teaches you how to SEE correctly.

Loomis' info is right on, but he doesn't go into the depth that Schmid does. Plus, it's hard to get good color reproductions of the paintings from his book, since they're out of print (and they're only a few in the book anyway). Schmid's book has tons of beautiful reproductions that illustrate his points.

People are begging for good book suggestions all the time. I would suggest this book over any other oil painting book.
