View Full Version : Doom [the movie]

Doom, based on the PC game(s), stars Karl Urban as John Grimm [LOTR:The Two Towers + Return of the King, The Chronicles of Riddick], The Rock as Sarge [Walking Tall, The Mummy Returns], Dexter Fletcher as Pinkey , and Rosamund Pike as Samantha [The Libertine, Die Another Day].

Also Karl speaks of the movie in an interview with EmpireOnline UK: "... the monsters are real, they're not CGI. They're made by Stan Winston who did Jurassic Park and Predator and all that. Holy frickin yeah!! Aliens being one of my personal favorites.

I can't wait to see this show. Hopefully the action/acting will be remotely as good as Aliens if not better.

I think it might be a very entertaining movie, but it kinda irks me that they totally perverted the concept. I mean, Doom is VERY simple. You only need 4 things:

Helldemons
Mars
Marines
Guns

So they're only 1 for 4 on this movie...

If you further simplify that formula you are left with Cacodemons, Imps and the Super Shotgun.
That's all i need.

I thought I remembered reading that they had taken out the stuff about hell. Which imo was one of the coolest things about the game. That and the hiss of a cacodemon behind you.

[B]"One character is a technician called "Pinky" who has a cybernetic wheelchair thanks to a bad teleporting accident. Pinky later mutates into something remotely resembling a creature from Doom 3.

:dur:
Thats.. really really dumb sounding.

And yeah, no demons, no hell, no mars = not Doom.

It's funny how even if a movie adaption of a game, novel, or comic book sucks, you want to see it just so you can witness how bad they screwed it up. You think they factor that into their target audience analysis?

You thought the story in doom3 was good?!?!?!?! There was like no story and thats what killed the game, that and the repeating scenary.

I am still going to see the movie though, it will be sad if there are no demons though. I want to see the god damn cyber demon and his thundering foot steps in the distance.

No story, what the heck are you talking about? For a FPS it had quite a bit of story. There was tons of dialog on the PDA's. Thats how they told the story. It didn't play out just like a movie, but the whole mysterious race, and the teleportation and all that was very cool. Some of the levels did get repetative, but I think it was varied enough to keep it interesting.

So many people complained about not being one, even the president of id said something like stories in videogames are like a porno, dont expect much of one. shows how much of an effort they put into the story. The PDAs were cool and I liked the movies they had on them. Any FPS has more of a story than doom. Look at half life, far cry, vampire the masquerade: bloodlines, thirteen, etc, those stories are so much better and more thought out than doom3 was. Maybe I shouldnt say the story in doom3 was bad, there just wasnt much there, they could have and should have done a hell of alot better with it. Its the atmosphere that doom3 created that was so awsome.

honestly, i'm incredible pissed with hollywood and it's ingorant bastards toward the video game industry...

i get the feeling that hollywood is falling behind and the game industry is rising on top... so basically it sounds as if hollywood is frustrated and wants to catch up or be a part of it. one thing...if hollywood wants to make a movie based on a game, they should keep it true to the damn game, not turn it into a whole new movie or story. why does hollywood change a game franchise ultimately into something completely different from the game?!?! I mean they took the game and ripped out everything that made it the game that we all know and love and turn it into something that we totally hate and don't want to see. Are they afraid of a horde of religious groups barraging them with complaints about the a movie being about demons, hell, mars and marines? is it blasphemous to make a movie based ona great game? ID soft should friggi'n sue whatever studio or company that developed it. becuase it's not a movie about the game doom it's something entirely different with the copyrighted name "DOOM"...really why call a fucking movie "DOOM"?! seriously these guys don't deserve to do that when making a movie completely untrue to the game...bah, anyone agree with me?

MattGamer
July 2nd, 2005, 01:55 AM
I'm sure theres something in this movie that's related to the "Doom" franchise. Just wait. Heck, they don't even have a web site up for it yet - why jump to conclusions when we haven't even seen the synopsis of it.

Who cares it's not on Mars, at least it's on a different planet than Earth.
I agree with most of you though. It's lame how Hollywood changes game worlds to their advantage. Heck, most of the people watching these movies (ie. Tomb Raider) are going to see familiar worlds they once played for hours upon end. Not some soccer mom who's seen Freaky Friday 12 times. It's for those needy gamers and horror fanatics.

Now if they made a Half-Life movie and screwed that one up, I'd be very pissed. Half-Life is nothing without Gordon, the headcrabs, and the G-Man.

yes, indeed, it's good that valve denied hollywood the rights to make a movie based on half-life. Half-Life can't be made into a movie, it just can't becuase you are gordon freeman when you play the game, whatever you do makes gordon freeman come to life. the freeman is in you...G-man is just your nanny, always on the lookout, clearing the dangerous path... making everything so damn easy.

Exactly......what a GREAT movie..one of my favs.

I have an uncanny feeling that Doom will suck, i just don't belive in the directors of today ability to make non-cgi creatures horrifying. Than again most of them don't have the ability to make even cgi creatures scary.... Look at Resident Evil Apocalypse and the creature Nemesis-what a bore. This movie is going to be another crappy hollywood manufactured movie with a lot of gloss and no filler.

EDIT: OMG they are getting the guy who directed Cradle 2 the Grave to helm Doom?! LMAO....and The Rock's career really looked like it was picking up....poor guy.

i can't wait to see Stan Winston's creatures, but saying that none of it will be cg is stupid...

some of that stuff really has to be cg or it will be straight up boring. there's only some much 'control' you can do with a mechanical creature.

well see... i just hope they plan on blending alot of cg and mechanic, usually turns out to be a good result

jfwalls
July 4th, 2005, 08:01 PM
I love Stan Winston's stuff. I guess that would be good reason to see it. One of my favorite creature's of his was Pumpkinhead. There were a few shots towards the end where the thing just looked awesome. I think CG looks cool, but when you have someone who is the caliber of Winston doing the creatures and animatronics, it's hard to beat. Look at the queen in Aliens. Actually, look at all the of the aliens in that movie. Not a damn computer shot in there, and just about every scene in that movie looked superb. I still prefer the makeup and monster suits. If you spend the time, and money you can get a pretty realistic movie. Oh, Oh..I think I smell a new thread! CG vs Monster suits. Or has it already been done?

MattGamer
July 5th, 2005, 08:39 PM
Ssenkrah Semaj: forgive me!! i was up way too late to be reading forum posts anyways. i missed the "non" in "non-cgi creatures". again i apologize from the bottom of my heart. :)
jfwalls and davi: I agree with JF that the Aliens in Aliens were superb without CGI. though this is a new era and the people now are growing up with CGI everywhere. any movie/game/commercial has CGI in it these days (you didn't think those cars were real in those car commercials did you?). the kids and parents will know what is fake and what is real... the question is the style that they put it in. that will define a great movie from a suckage one.
my heart is content with either of the two. though i'd rather they lean on the NON-CGI elements than the CGI. unless, of coarse, it's blended in there like the War of the Worlds movie. now the CGI in that movie was amazing, but this is for the WotW post. :er:

The idea of doing this sort of Movie without CG is brilliance. Anamatronics and models are vastly underrated now we have CGI so to have a big film like this put it's trust in models should have amazing results.

UPDATE from Shacknews.com (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/37812):

GameCloud has a report on the DOOM movie panel (http://www.gamecloud.com/article.php?article_id=731), which concluded at the San Diego Comic-Con earlier today. Attendees were treated to a 90 second teaser trailer, which revealed that the movie DOES take place on Mars. It also showed various monsters and cast members. Another clip showed a first person viewpoint during one scene, with weapon reloading and everything.

"Both The Rock and Karl Urban were fans of the original Doom game before signing on to play the roles of space marines Sarge and John, respectively. The Rock said he got to use the classic weapons like the BFG in the movie and he, Urban and the other members of the space marine cast got real military training from a former SAS member to make sure that they worked together like a real special forces team would. All of the panel members mentions that they were displeased that other movie adaptations of games stayed so far from the original material and while the Doom movie does had plot and character elements that the game does not have it still will be very close to how the game looks and plays. The Rock said that he saw a version of the movie a few days ago and in his words 'It really kicks ass'."

DOOM The Movie is currently scheduled for an October 21st release.
Haha, the panel members are pissed off. I'd be too.... why make a movie based on a game when nothing is related to it but some camera shots, monsters, and mars. Heck, they'd might as well name it "Dooom" and save the real "Doom" to those who want to create a movie worth watching.

The movie is really funny. Wait until it comes out for video then buy it. That way you can sit around with friends and make fun of it without disturbing others. lol i so badly wanted to yell out "BOOM HEADSHOT!!" in some scenes. Also, The Rock is a really bad actor. I saw it last night and it was this close to being really enjoyable. For the most part, the movie seemed well aware of how ridiculous it was, and had fun with it, but then they tried to legitimize the plot with some genetic engineering crap that actually made far less sense than a portal to Hell. Any time they tried to reveal the plot, it fell on its face more often than not. I quite enjoyed the Rock as Sarge, though.

Another thing I was really disappointed with was the final battle.

(Spoilers ahead)

It was such a huge letdown. You've got two marines with huge guns, one of which is about to transform into a badass demon, and you make the scene a fistfight with bad wirework?! It's a game about shooting giant monsters with guns! It would've been awesome if they'd had the Rock transform into a Cyberdemon or something at that point and have Reaper have a gunfight with him. They wouldn't have to change the plot at all, and it would be a far better battle. Maybe that way the BFG could've had a point in the movie.

Their best embodyment of this was when Goat(?) was in the sewers looking for the demon and right when hes about to shoot, his flashlight goes out, much to his dismay. you know, doom3, you couldnt shoot and use your flashlight at the same time, which everyone and their cat bitched about, which led to mods like ductapeflashlight, yeah yeah. brilliant!

bah i thought it was okay... i mean it was entertaining for the most part in the sense of a blatantly stupid action movie, but man why didn' they use the actual doom story...the gateway to hell, demons, the way the story progressed in the game, was by far a hell of a lot more interesting than this craptacular low budgety excuse for an action movie....

-i wanted sarge to actually turn into something badass. i kept thinking the other hellknights were actually just imps he was going to turn into the hellknight. and then reaper would use the BFG on him. omg, that would kick ass.

-wanted to see more martian surface

-wanted to see the other portals like the 'hell portal' like in Doom 3. that would be wickidly bad ass. but the movie didnt really go with the plot of doom 3 so i guess they couldnt do that.

-should have stuck with the doom 3 plot and creature designs

END SPOILER

but still, the movie did kick ass considerably. kept me entertained.

Entertaining yes, but admittedly I was hoping for a bigger ending. 85% satisfied & 15% disappointment.

All I can say is the game has a better story and better actors! :dur:

It was better than I expected. I agree 100 % with all of jAns gripes about it. I gave it 7/10. I hope there is a sequel because it seems to me some questions were left unanswered.

SPOILERS

- Like for example what the hell happened with Reaper and his sister earlier when they were younger?

- And the fact that not all the demons were destroyed in the end but left alone in the lab where they could do stuff for their ulterior motives.

END SPOILER

I pretty much agree with all of peoples comments here. I just wish it was scarier. Although I think it's worth it to watch the movie just for that first person scene. ;)

You guys are more forgiving than me.

I went into this movie with high hopes, and came out almost satisfied.
Yes, the Rock's acting sucked, but the "Big Force Gun" and "FPS" scene were well worth the wait. Though I didn't get the point of all the wussy trailers at the start of the movie. What the heck, no horror or action movie trailers, just this one about a basketball team becoming great in highschool, bladdabladdy blah!

[SPOILER]

- Did anyone notice that one of the screens, when Reaper was in "First-Person", was one of the same screens in Doom 3.

- Did you see the semi-circle lighted table in the medical area? That's in Doom 3, as well.

- I wish the black guys could have kicked more butt, instead of dying in 30 seconds or less. They were sweet dudes.

I was dissapointed with the plot of the whole thing. Demons spawning from hell is way better than the 25 chormizone, or whatever babble they were babbling about.

And I totally agree about the final battle! Heck, Resident Evil had a better end battle than this movie.

Let's just pray that Doom II and III will be better than this, and that it will NOT be directed by Uwe Boll. Heh.

[END SPOILER]

This is a must-see for any action/gaming fan. By far way better than the Fog. Oh, my.

Advocate of Fate

yeah, boll's decision to try and slip in some actually storyline and "Depth" was pretty much where the movie went wrong. like that memory scene as reaper's looking out the window? what the crap?

bah hahahahahahahaha!!!! i just saw this movie bahh hahahahahahaha!111.

prerequisites for an instant classic:

1. horibble acting

2. Outragious gory action.

3. no story to speak of

Doom = instant classic.

The part when the black dude manhandles a hellknight was awsome.

I actually liked it. The last 20minutes of the film are probably the best when you see everything 1st person view. I actually went and played Doom3 when i got home and was dissapointed in the quality of the game's first person view compared to the movie.

But the fact they made a few changes where they shouldn't have (no hell, no flaming skulls) didn't bother me so much. The movie wasn't left open for a sequal (although they may do one anyway) and being such, they simplified the story to fit in one film. The portal to hell would be rather hard to believe for the average person and taking the time to make it make sense would ruin it all.

Ditto! What's your mother language? I occationally have to... well no... almost all the time have to change the Audio track to the native language of the movie (ie. with High Tenson i had to change it to the french track) to actually get the feeling of the actors and their tones of voices. I can't understand french, but that's what subtitles are for! I hope they didn't screw the movie up for you!

I just realized i havent vented my 2 cents about the doom movie. Here goes:

If the doom franchise was an innocent little ten year old girl, then the movie would be the 40 year old child molester who raped her in the most gruesome of ways, then cut her into pieces and fed her to a bunch of rats, then raped and killed all of the rats one by one. They should have mounted a spit cannon on the screen in the theater, that spat me in the face over and over again, then they should have mounted a robotic foot in the seats that kept kicking me in the nuts over and over. That would be more fun than seeing the doom movie.

I hated this movie, so I am slightly dissappointed. They should make a half-life movie, I don't think a quake one would work.

January 27th, 2006, 05:37 PM
i think a Quake-movie could be more succesfull than a HL movie...HL is all about "being" Gordon Freeman...a movie would ruin this feeling...
(Also there actually was a half-Life movie produced but it sucked so Valve canceled the production...would be interesting to see some snippets of it though....)

Im all for a Metalgear movie :)

Ok, so film producer's lack any true imagination and prefer to pile their money into a successful franchise which already owns a massive fan base. They know their market, they know people will go and see it. . . even if it is the worst pile of SHITE (if that's your opinion.)
Each director, and there were many. . . will have their own take on how the story pans out AND because they are artistic. . . they also feel they have to change something in order to make it. . . special, different or their own particular master piece. Which is why so few film adaptations EVER resemble the original. . . comic, book, video game etc.

Anyway, what did everyone think of the guns?

Here's your chance to rant at one of the blokes who made them. . .

tullie

I think that HL has a more Movie feel to it, the story line could be so easliy adapted. To be honest when I played quake I didn't actually pay attention to the story line, although I prefer it over HL.
I still got to play MGS

I wanna see a rogue spear/rainbow six/ raven sheild film, I love those games!
Okay, this may just be me, but I thought that the BFG was a Quake thing? But it was in Doom.. *confused* Is it like a general name used in FPSs?
Hmm, important question :).

MattGamer
January 30th, 2006, 02:37 PM
tullie: Yeah, the BFG was Doom's original idea. All the proof is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BFG9000
I think there is a Rainbow Six movie coming out. But I think it's just a rumor. That would be freakin sweet. As for a MGS movie, gosh, I've already stated what I thought about that in the MGS thread. ;)

Handmade: I thought the guns were pretty freakin cool (in Doom). And the effects were sweet... just wish that the BFG had more action in the movie ... I was sad to see it used like twice.

lol @ corky13. I wonder is being drunk while watching Bloodrayne (directed by Uwe B.) would make it any better? Haha, I watched preview clips of it and it sucks soo badly. It looks like a Xena warrior princess kinda of movie, but with less of a budget. Haha

The one thing that irritated me most was that the plot changed totally from the games. Now there wasn't a portal to hell on mars, now it just was some kind of fucked up scientific experience. It would have been much more interesting if they had just stick to the Hell On Mars, and that they would have revealed more about the history of mars and stuff like that.

Otherwise I think it was an watchable movie, I sometimes like to watch brainless action movies...

MattGamer -- haha, thanks for the info on the bfg. I haven't played Doom for years. I had concsidered buying doom 3 tho. Omg, a rainbow six film based on the book would be so very cool! I would be the first to see it! :^^:

Edit -- R6 movie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0414429/ note: if the director gets this wrong I will throw large books at him!!!! repeatedly, for the rest of his life.

MattGamer

tullie: Zack Snyder's the director for the new R6 movie. Ooo... awesome. I liked his Dawn of the Dead movie. It was o.k. and a fun movie to watch.

Get Doom 3! You won't be dissapointed if you like the original Doom and horror movies (there's tons of cheap scares around every corner). There are some quirks in it, but the beauty of the game and exciting moments are worth your wild. I think it's about $30 nowdays at any store that sells software. Maybe cheaper online. Heck, this is better than any horror movie because you can play it for 30 hours and use the guns to kill the demons/monsters instead of running away from them 90% of the time. HAHA

nordmark: haha, soo true!

I didn't like this film. I know that this was horror type of movie but:
-Why couldn't they turn the lights on in the whole laboratory? :)
-It was some far future with high technology level so why couldn't marines have night-vision goggles instead of some small unreliable flashlights?

MattGamer

Farvus: So true about the flashlight/nightvision stuff. I was thinking the same thing when I watched the movie again.

yeah exactly, this movie went straight to the shitbag...i couldn't believe it ohhh the huge dissappointment what a waste of money at blockbuster, OMG why did i rent that movie?! The acting was horrible...goddamnit, the rock can't fucking act like he isn't the goddamn rock! really...the whole movie took place in one place...it was a very small set...all the "mutants" were just lame ...it seemed like it didn't even take place on mars and look as if the whole movie was shot at some gas refinery plant.rather than the UAC facility. goddamit this movie should never have been made in the first place. it's the worst sci-fi/ game adaptation movie i have ever seen. i want my 5 bucks back!
