Portfolio Help

Hi, Im currently putting together a portfolio and I was wondering if some of the pro's here could help me out. What are some of the key things people look for? Im not really making a professional portfolio, just something I can send to schools, and universities, etc... Any tips would be great, thanks.

I'm not a pro, or even remotely close to an expert, but I've been working on getting my skills up so I could at least CONSIDER applying to an art school in the future and from what I've read on the portfolio requirements for varying schools it's fairly upfront and honest. Usually a graspe of Life Drawing or Life Study is what they're looking for. IF you're going in as a freshman, I mean.

Maybe your best bet would be to ask colleges you're interested in to mail you their applications information, specifiy that you'd like to go into art and they should send info that covers the rest. I HOPE that was somewhat helpful.

My room mate just applied for art school..

things they recomended.

Still lifes... charcoal.. and/or painted

Some gesture drawings

Some long poses.

Self portraits or portraiture

contour and/or thumbnail studies

a sketchbook or 2 as one peice.

value studies

and if you are going into a specific field like animation or graphic design or illustration, things that represent you in that field.

Also things that you are proud of that are strong peices.

I think that was it, but I can double check if you want.

When they say "get 10 of your best works", screw that. When I applied for Ringling, I sent 58 frickin pictures on a CD, which also forces them to get a real good look at the picture instead of just scanning over some slides in 30 seconds.

Another good rule of thumb I've been trying to follow is to have them interr-elate somehow. Like if you use slides make the slides pictorially progress across the page the way you would read a book. Also I've been hearing alot from many schools that they want to see some actual pieces of regular stuff you do so that they can see your creativity. They want to see how you would handle an assignment. Sketchbook is another big one I would include. I'm working on several of mine and trying to balance out my portfolio with better pieces but like golden avatar said you have to ask the schools to know what they are asking for in particular.
