Hey Dood,

I don't reply much to anyone, but I thought I'd drop in to say you have some really nice stuff. A lot of them look more like sketches than actually finished as much as you could. But either way, I like them. I think your best work is the character sheets. Moof is especially cool. Its nice to see the character sheets as well as the illustrations including the characters. Somehow, the alien guy reminds me a bit of a Mon Calamari, maybe its the colors of the robe. Was that intentional?

thanks for sharing

I get that a lot here. Think it's that I don't have a refined production sense- non matured art style :(
I'd love to hear exactly what people think I should do to tighten my work, I could refine and refine, but I feel that's not what I should be tackeling.

Anyways thanks for the comments Octavian. Glad you like teh moof!
Also the character you liken to the Mon Calamari might just have to do with the nautical style of both creatures. I modeled mine off of the nautilus, while I think the Mon Clarmari was a blend of various sea creatures, not sure which ones though, but I'm betting squid eyes for one. ;)

Looking at the 2nd picture (the one with the Calamaris ind BG :) )
Smoother colors, overall, look at the cloth folds of the calamari.
Clearer outlines (not comic like) but just show where some matierial stops where another begins
Remove the lines that are not necassary (on the ground these white lines) or work on them so it is visible for what they are.

its just what i would change... to make the image more readable and move it from sketch to final illustration.

Does that help a bit?

I'm shocked at the lack of response to this thread... I mean I know its not crit week anymore and all, but..... I felt compelled to respond to your work... :yayca:

First off I agree with what Mk is saying, in addition:
I think it may have to do with your combination of soft and hard brushes. Some of your softer atmospherics seem a bit rushed to me. In photoshop if you are not REALLY careful with their application, then they can end up as obvious as a lens flare. Likewise, some of your sharp areas don't read right. The worms teeth are a good example. They are so sharp, yet at that distance I'm not sure it would look like that to the viewer.

Oh, and don't be surprised if someone clocks you on the similarities to Nivbed's Chaza and Yar characters. The depressed character, mask, bound hands, contrasted by the loveable little furry thing. Oh and Giant god like beasts shrouding the background. But yeah, thats just an after thought.

I'm no expert, but I try. I wanted to elaborate on my crit in the interest of helping you. Again, I like these. I can't wait to see your progress in the future. Btw, where do you go to school?

It certainly does MK! Thanks a bunch

Octavian: I totally see what you're saying. You nailed me right on. I feel I can see a little better where I'm hitting things wrong- the worm's teeth for example definately tells it all about how I work, hah.
Really, I thank you deeply for the crits, I'll definately work on those things. Make the work good for :yayca:

Oh and I go to the Art Institute of California- San Francisco. Not the greatest school for illustration, but good for getting a taste of everything in the entertainment industry.

Theo: thnx, and it's not hard to be brave with colors, just play with them till they start playing with you :)
