the history:
a while ago i started the lord of laquinta challenge thread. i challenged one and many came. and all was good. more and more started to come. and all was good. this has become a very good thing and i want to make it better.

the idea:
from now on i will present the topic every monday. the topic will consist of three random words that will give the guidlines for the art to be produced. these words may be nouns adjectives or pretty much whatever i feel like. sometimes there may be special topics but for now we will stick to the words. the art will then be produced and posted the following sunday night for the world to see.

the payoff:
after and if the thread has had a productive run, all entries will be documented and put into a book that i will attempt to have printed and distributed. not only would this be a neat thing to have it is incentive to produce great art to be seen and had by all. ive got plans for the book so i hope we can make it happen. the more artists we get in on this thing the better are chances are.

the rules:
topics will be posted on monday. art will be posted the following sunday. i have been guilty in the past of posting but it is something that i plan to rectify. this is the only rule. everything is fair game.

I hope to have many people join and be committed to this. i think it will be a good development skill for all, it will enforce work and deadline habits and when the book is produced it will be one hell of a memento for all. i am serious about this and hope to find more who are as well.

spread the word ad we will be starting shortly (as soon as the artists want to)

thanks

sounds like a good plan meta... and all the entries will be printed.. Thats def. a cather... Maybe after you have all the artwork you would want to put into the book we could have a book cover challenge! It also be cool if you could get a judge... someone who would be neutral....

Hey chris.....nice to see that la quinta has morphed into this solid thread....kudos man.....wonderfull Idea to make a printed book....
I assume the weekly winners will be the ones that make the pages..

also...one last thought since we are using Conceptart.org/Massiveblack to run this maybe you should get some feed back with the overlords to see if you/we can do this...we might need some kind of perrmission.....or maybe they might put there seal of approval on it?

metaphysiks
December 31st, 2004, 12:35 PM
thanks for the advice evran. it would be a good idea to see if they approve it since we are using their webspace. as far as the pages of the book go, i was thinking the top one or two entries from each week would make it. we would need to find an impartial judge with the time to commit each week. thanks for the feedback.

Here's mine. Its not very out there or anything, I basically just opend up Photoshop and started randomly painting. Six would be the 4 gold eyes added to her own, and unnatural would be the eye colors (yeah not that exciting, but oh well). What started out as a mask kinda ended up more as a headdress.

against my better judgement, this is the second concept that i started and i stuck with it. i dont really like it but i had to finish something. it could use a lot of help/tweaking. maybe someday it will be done. shoulda stuck with my first one. blah!

Sorry this is so late, I'm busy BUT that's no excuse so feel free to scold me as you wish...

Just got my hands on painter, still gotta feel out all of the crazy shit you can do with it. I'm not very happy with it.
Crit it up fellas
http://www.kempart.com/posts/mask.jpg

gringoloco: cool intircate pattern on the armour, got some big anatomy issues tho. Check those legs and makes sure the guy can stand on em'

vctr: image is pretty small dude, but from here I'd say beware the outline, makes stuff flatten a little. I could comment better If i could see it.

meta: awesome pic dude, great realistic tech strikes a cord with me. Those legs are real solid too, looks like the exist in space. My first impression tho is that it's cramped in the box, the tech assembly stops at the image border making a box sillohette. Composition isn't always sooo important to me but in this case it's influencing your design.

hurricane: great piece man! You always get the most out of your colors and I love the detail. My only crit is that maybe the idea on unatural elements (the 6) could be pushed more - pretty minor issue tho.

teknobabel: nice design, I really like the six eyes idea. The large eyes bug me a little, the one closest to the viewer looks a little out of place.

jack frost: great monster man. finish it up a little and it'd be a good pic.

-- I thought it'd be a good idea if we each crit eachother with our posts, so no hard feelings :) , on that note let me have it.. -

Its still unfinished cause i wasnt feeling confident with it.texas chainsaw influenced,i dunno just a pretty uninspired day today couldnt come up with anything original..

..unfinished sketch..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/Rusty187/2005page-20.jpg

Jack Frost ...welldone sketch Jack, sum tonal work wouldve polished it off nicely..
Nike ...It started of good untill you tryed to hard to make the keywords obvious in your picture, kinda ruined it.still i like it though.
young paddy1 ...Robo cop mask just dosent work 4 me here, but it still works..
Teknobabel ...pose maybe a little lifeless but its still all good, nice idea with the 6 eyes.
hurricane ...beautiful dude,i love everything about this one, skillful use of lighting in this one.
metaphysiks ...looking good so far captain, the number 6 feels i little corney though..cant wait to see it coloured.
vctr ...The scan a little small man, take care with where and how you lay your line work down,it looks a little too uniform throughout.
GriNGoLoCo ...maybe a little to heavy with your linework, really sort the drawing out b4 you commit to laying the ink down, itll save you many headaches.
steak-tron ...Stunning stuff Kemp, your a future player in tha game,no doubt...the rushed orange surrounding the figure ruins it for me,the leathery look you did on that one makes me cry tears of joy ..

Welldone to everyone.

great job everyone. not bad for the first crack at this. i can see now that in time this will be a truly great thread, lets keep pushin.

jack- i think the forms in your piece are solid. the arms look real nice. i would have liked to see you jump in there and render it out. i love characters with six arms, maybe a sort of fetish.
nike- this piece is very surreal. my only gripe is that it is hard to tell that the thing plugged in is the neck of that mask, if thats even right. it would be great to see you go into that a little more.
young paddy1- i like the idea. his pose is a little stiff but you can re-work that. i love how he has the masks on his belt. maybe if you could bring more attention to that. why not make him a real samurai, is there any reason why he is a cyborg?
tekno- great start, would love to see where you go with it. i like the idea of the different eye colors.
hurricane- i love the color and texture. the face is rendered nicely too. i had a little trouble picking up on the six, but it doesnt ruin the piece.
meta- crap.
vctr- i wish it were bigger buddy. i really cant see much but from what i can see it looks like you put a lot of time into it. blow it up some.
gringo- i like the traditional media. the marker rendering is cool. i would like to see a more finished product.
steak- for you first time in painter i must say that you are grabbing it quick. the leather looks great and the subtleties of the "six" is real nice. good to have you aboard.
rusty- hey man i know all about being uninspired. look at my entry. i like where you were going with yours, very creepy. would love to see it done.

thanks everyone for the crits and hard work. i will post the new topic tonight at 7.
after tabulating the votes, it has come to be that HURRICANE is the winner for last weeks topic. congrats hurricane, in the grand scheme of things your piece became the first page of this book. please send me a high res copy of your piece.

Thanks for the crits guys I really enjoyed this session alot

Jack Frost: I like it alot I just wish you could've finished at least the other leg it would have taken you only a min and it would give the pic a more finished look

Nike- nice work I enjoyed it certainly unusual perhaps just a bit more work on the clock to make it look like a clock it looks just like the idea of a clock more than an actual clock itself although i understand you were pressed for time.

Young Paddy1- I like the idea alot my 2 major crits are I wish you would've worked a bit more on making the masks on his belt stand out without just scracthing in the white & the green skin color ( metal color) isn't pleasing me too much but like i said love the idea great stuff

Teknobabel- Great original stuff My crits would just be that i think the skin colors looking a bit bland right now maybe inject some more color into her skin and the only other thing i think her eyes could be done a bit better . Overalll really nice thou!

Hurricane- MY favorite piece and i guess everyone else's too no real crit except what had been said previously that the "six" isn't imedieatly visible but i got it. Really amazing piece!

Meta- really cool piece thats some nice tech you got going there only crit I feel the torso anatomy could be better also would've loved to see some color on this! but as with all of us understand no TIME

GringoLoco- nice piece markers are a nice touch , crits it does some a bit busy and the proportion / anatomy really does bring down the piece remeber get those down before you render! perhaps you could post the other 2 with better proportions ?

Steak- really nice piece probably my secound favorite it looks really nice for someone who just got painter! only crit is wish it was more finished the figure is great as is wish there was some backround on it thou.

Rusty- fantastic and Thanks for posting your thumbnail I only wished you could've finished as right now the masks on the finished piece is virtually not there

Overall great stuff guys, thanks for the great crits I will look out for that I apologize for the tiny scan it was resized when i uploaded oh well nway I took some quick digicam pics if anyone wants to take a look, if anyone was wondering about my pic the "unusual" the boy on the left his feet arn't touching the ground.... and there's a bunch of kids in a forrest and the middle girl is wearing a lions mask... and the horrizons don't line up... Ithink thats it I think... theirs six kids and the mask well is easy to see.. also at bottom of pic is supposed to be a creek but by the time i got to it was tired and it was rendered horribly also boy is spacially supposed to be on top of rock closer to the viewer.. lots of room for improvement so its back to the drawing board for me!.... oh and feel free to check out my sketchbook i'll be upt today!

Arg, I won't be submitting anything in this one. Had something going that I really liked, but then my gf decided to come up from LA and steal all my free time. Don't get to see her that often, so unfortunately she takes priority! I'll be in the next one tho. Can't wait to see what everyones come up with.

Nice subject this week, this thread will be fun to watch.

Spent a few hours doodling in photoshop this evening and came up with this.

I'm sorry about not having replied to the last submissions and thanks so much for your crits - also today it was a fight with time, lol, but even though some things are still bothering me, here's my today's entry.

blah, too much schoolwork this week so i only got a few hours here and there. this is what i have so far. would love to have finished it.
tyboogie: i like this image. the girl has a nice pose and the red thing is fun to look at. maybe the image is a little blurry tho?
al-x: nice storytelling. i think the lighting and the anatomy could be tweaked some but i like the direction. also, really nice and subtle symbol there in the bg.
paddy1: nice image. good likeness and she really pops from the bg. i think maybe the shirt and stuff look a little flat. nice pic.
nike: this piece too has a nice story going on. i think the lighting, texture and anatomy need some work. really push teh lighting expecially. you have the chance to do something incredible with those windows.

sorry about the infinished state guys, i am really busy but at least owe you guys an attempt.

Aight' Mine is crazy late, which blows... I've now put my foot in my mouth 2 weeks in a row.

Also, my entry is eatin' big asses but here goes. The staff was supposed to be the symbol but it falls short. Still a great exercise, I'll try and do something decent nxt week.

http://www.kempart.com/posts/LSG.jpg

tyboogie: Themes are all there and great colors. Always like your designs and way of drawing. The hands are a little blobish but it's quick.

alx: cool pic, the figure looks doll-like which is cool in a freakish way. If I was being picky about realistic proportions I'd say the neck is too long. I also don't see enough of the fire reflected in the skin.

youngpaddy1: Nice pic dude, I like the makeup design and the figure is solid. could pop the fires in the back out a little more.

nike: nice take on the theme. The light line on the side of the girls face really flattens it out... cool mood

meta: noice rough pic. Looks like a good start to a painting. It'd be good to see you take it farther. Also missing the symbol.

jack frost: good work on the theme and interesting pic. It would be nice to see more reflection on the glass and value shift in the fluid to make it look like a tube.

Let's make next week a killer!

Hi again :)

good work everyone, and thanks a lot for your comments and crits!
now here are mine...

tyboogie: great picture - I love the colors and the composition, the only thing bothering a bit me is that the outline of her legs and arms are a bit blurry.

al-x: good pproach -I like the scene - there are some anatomy issues though - the arms look a bit strange and her throat seems to be a bit too long.

young paddy-I've already said-I really like yours, no real crits, maybe her shoulder is a bit small.
metaphysics: I'd love to see that finished, good sketch!

Jack Frost: I really like the idea, and nice colors - maybe you should try to bring some more depth in it - add some shadows and define a light source.

steak-tron:nice pic - I really like the colors and mood in it, nice light, there are some anatomy issues though -her right foot is bothering me most)

hope that helps and makes sense, sorry about my english :)

I've been trying to work some more on mine, I'm still not that happy with it, the girl's face is bothering me most, but, well, I'll keep working on it...hope that's a step into the right direction anyway- I'm trying to make it less chaotic and to work on the light ...
hope it's alright to post the further steps also in that thread, if not, just tell me, and I'll move it to my sketchbookthread :)

edit: some more changes, like her face a bit better now, thanks for your advice, Prometheus, just seen it :) I'll rework it again! Your piece is awesome btw.

(Sorry for butting in, just wanted to do a pic on the theme, didn't really read the rules if there are any.)

al-x> some fire light on the girl's body would make the scene more homogeneous. Now it seems a bit like 2 different elements. Anyways, has 'grafiskt forum' tossed the old database? I couldn't find my login. Layout changed too.

ty> The dodged patches and (thus) lack of silhouette makes the figure difficult to read.

Nike> The dark robed character sorta melds into the dark BG. I think there's some theory on making things separate with 3 diff values and 3 planes, resulting in a number of combinations... saw some site on that.... or was it 2 planes? Arg I'm rambling. Anyways, if you feel that a figure is risking to merge with another element or background, don't be afraid to just change the value/color of that figure (or BG). It's legal to change anything that threatens to not make the composition work. Don't feel stuck with a choice you made earlier.

Wow, thats cool Prom. But are you getting lazy, just painting one side and then mirroringin (uh...) it ;) .

I just recently found "grafisktforum" so I dont know what happened to the old database.

Thanks for the crits on my piece. Some flames on her body would make a bit more sense i guess, now it looks more as if she is rising from the flames instead of burnin in them. And I really need to fix that neck on her, she looks like some kind of brontosaur right now. And some elbows would probably make those arms a bit more armish. And the highlights should be pushed a bit more.

Shit, thats a lot of things that dont make sense... :nohope:

this weeks topic:
battle scene.
whatever you want goes this week with one exception, well two actually
ABSOLUTELY NO FRIGGIN ORCS. lord of the rings is awesome, i agree, but there are more things that fight than elves and orcs. if i see any orcs you will be permanatly banned, well maybe not but i will campaign for it,so NO ORCS.
secondly, there must be more than two figures. thats all, whether they are human or beast please have more than two. thats all.
lets get it on

ok orcs banned but elves still ok. got it. elves versus goblins then!!

Ok, commentary time, sorry it took me so long to get to this, I wasn't able to get the time to to this right during the workday.

Carnifex - wow buddy, I agree, that's one of the strongest things I've seen from you yet. Great work and keep pushing, you're improving fast!!! You might want to consider adding a setting into this piece though.. even if it fades off into the dark, it would still be nice to see the suggestion of a ground plane/background

MattDixon - I love th sense of character of this one! Excellent sense of weight on her, and I love the shininess level to the skin. I think the upper left corner of the picture gets a little fuzzy, but this has a coool quality to it throughout.

Prom - nice nice nice, I love the color scheme and the limited pallette. Took me a while to even notice you copy/pasted the two halves.. but now I see the mirroring it's hard NOT to notice it... Still, great piece.

Nike - Nice atmosphere to your piece... my only real comment would be that it's painting in very neutral light... and you've got this cool looking stained glass window in the background that could be doing alot MORE to the light colors on the statue and the girl. It's there a little bit, but you could really push that aspect lots! Great job man, I think the face turned out well.

Steak - I love her athletic physique, with them long narrow limbs and long fingers, that really gives her a nice sense of character. I also love the light source. Crit wise I think her butt doesn't really feel like it's sitting on the ground, it's missing a little pressure from her weight I think. Her left leg seems a little weird too. Nice stuff as usual man!

Evren - rad colors man, she really looks radioactive... I know shes supposed to be immersed in a chemical bath/jar thing of light, but she might look cool with some shading...like almost that monochromatic xrayish shading you get with formaldahyde preserves? But, She's very graphic at the moment which might have been what you were going for. Very cool!

Meta - nice start man, I really like the composition and the pose. I think maybe the light could play a bit more pronounced of a role on her skin but that's a excellent start!

Young Paddy - Very moody man, she looks badass.. you can really see the photref in there... which is kinda cool because it gives it a nice lighting, but kinda looks odd too with various elements. Nice work!

al-x - interesting piece, I dig the girl a lot but she looks a little grayish to me.. youd expect all that fire would be creating crazy shadows and light on her. The fire feels a littttttle photoshopy, but I don't mind it too much. I really like that deep red behind her though, that + fire + grays loooks nice all together!

Tyboogie - Glad to see ya over here ty. This is by far the most stylish piece of the lot... youve got some really cool stuff going on with her skin, I like those glows and shininess to her... it really adds atmosphere. The red coils kinda look odd because they're not reacting to the light as much.. but that gives it a strange stylish look to it too. cool stuff.

Ok everyone, that was some kickbutt work. I hope i didnt forget anyone. I'm stepping down from judging and am gonna try and participate this week. This is a great idea meta, I'm glad to see the Laquinta challenge lives on!

Meta thats great !! yay us !!

thank you all for the kind words on the first challenge !

i like the second rounds entries alot !

Here comes some thoughts, take them or leave them :)

Nike : your looks good, but i get the feeling of that it lacks the sence of "space"... i get the feeling of that its too flat. You could check some photos or something for the face because around the cheeks and eye on the left side is off, i think you see too much of it.. But, its a very nice picture and clever way of solwing the challenge !

Tyboogie : very nice colors, but it looks like it could use some more work on the brushes, or edges so to speak. nicely framed and pleasant for the eye.

al-x : nice idea and well executed, my suggestion would be to juice up the colors alittle so you get that intence heat feeling. Good work non the less !

young paddy1 : Nice picture ! i like the feeling of it! But some parts look too much like copypaste, hmm, you havent worked parts into the picture enough (blend). cool stuff !

metaphysiks : as you said, its unfinnished, but it looks like a good start ! you should finnih it !

Jack Frost : Very nice idea ! what is it inside of the tube? if she isnt floating in air in there you should maybe try to give her some volume fog next time you would draw something similar.. try to find some underwater pictures and you'll see how stuff fades away when you view it beneath the surface. Great idea and a nice picture !

steak-tron : i think it was a good idea, you didnt fall short, but my critique would be about the colors, for me they look alittle too muddy. I like her pose alot and her face !

Prometheus|ANJ : Nice picture and congrats on the win ! But i dont like the fact that it looks too mcuh like its mirrord, but its still a nice piece !

Matt Dixon : Nice picture !! i like hte painterly feel of it ! but in my opinion her face is off, is it in a unatural angle/placement ? i dont know, but i think the head is wrong.. i like the colors alot !

Carnifex : Nice image, i cant remember your stuff but according to others you have progressed alot, that is always cool ! Next time maybe you should think about the position and frame for your picture, now this one has alot of "dead" areas, like black or darkred thats added just to fill the canvas. try to give the viewer a feeling by placing her in a more interesting position on the canvas and angle. Looks great and i like the picture, just some things to think about until the next one.

Glad you guys liked it! I know I cheapoed out with the mirror thing, I did the same on some earlier Gigerish pics I did. It's a fun and fast way to paint. I remember in deluxe paint you could paint in various symetry modes. I wish PS had something like that.

I'm afraid it was painted in very low rez, the web version is 66% of the original I think. What do you need the high rez for?

I actually started a battlescene pic but it developed into something else...

Hey, Hurricane!
While this both wails and rocks, the straight columns of smoke rising from the dragon really take away from the motion of the action. It's as if everyone is posing for you (if they did, then it's all cool), vice the midst of a battle.

Now my C&C for everybody:
-Carnifex: dont be afraid or molested of the color choices you use. Just do it.
-Hurricane: errr, just a very good illustration :) probably from another point of the view the composition could be cooler.
-JACKFROST: kick ass composition, maybe some darker mood colors would have been better, or else Carnifex will come up with that comment he posted :bashful: By the way thanks for the comments on my entry :) yes, anatomy is what I'm trying to practice more now :)

I enjoyed the topic, even though it was quite a challenge for me...I have to do more persepctive studies again :)

now here's my piece, maybe it's not a busy enough place, I'd call it "Agora"...
a market...that these two characters in the foreground are watching from a place above...
as always these days I was a bit short of time :)

yeah, but what is my motivation in this case?
i have finished the pic,so what would motivate me to work further on it?
and as said,i regret to say that i have no time to do it.

well kiddo what can i tell you- that attititude isnt gonna get you anywhere!
your motivation isnt just to finish, but to finish it and make it as good as you possiby can in the time you have! theres plenty of things you could fix on it. everyone is allowed a lazy day once in a while, and i understand your time restrictions because of your trip, but you did ask- so there you go. props for getting it done early, but theres alot of things you could have improved if you had taken the time. I know its easy to get frustrated with a piece, but the only way its ever gonna look good is if you put the hours into it. (HPX and Justin Sweet are exceptions!! the rest of us mortal types need to actually spend hours on a piece to make it look anywhere decent!!) and the rest of your time needs to go into honing the techniques that allow you to complete a work to the level necesary in a given amount of time. thats one thing we all need to learn if we ever want to become concept artists!!!

so that said, nuff talking more drawin!!!

peace.

Just found this thread as an offshoot referral from the damnable "Artist Wanted" scam solicitation...

Awesome idea. My only suggestion would be to keep the 3-word concept, as opposed to the "battle scene" or "environment" generality. The 3 words really open things up to interpretation, and seem to provide a much wider range of responses...

All of the entries have been awesome, and the winners are fantastic! I hope to find the time to enter, but current commitments have my painting skills occupied. Best of success to all entrants!

I've been meaning to participate in this since it started but before that some comments on the ones that have been posted already.

klinesmoker: nice drawing, in addition to what hurricane said I also think it could have more impact if we saw the face of the character.

hurricane: I love it! specially with the head hidden inside the armor. The only crit I can tell you is that the smoke doesn't really look like smoke to me, just nitpicking.

Ok, here's my entry, I guess I came up with a centaur mixed with a biker.

roger- well drawn. I feel like the guy is a little disconnected from the bike. maybe attach him directly?
jack- nice helmet design. maybe push the aggressive thing.
yolk- thanks for joining us. i like the idea of a tank, i think maybe thought that the paints could be worked in a little more.
meta- crap.
young paddy1- i like the scale that you presented us with. he is as big as mountains. i think the design could be pushed.

ok..done...well....i did two....well I started one but didn't like the way it was going and then realized that it was fitting the chriteria of the contest so i finished another....

first the unfinished one... both of these the "warped" part I was think more on the lines of modern lingo as meaning that the subject matter is twisted, or screwed up....this piece didn't have a shadow...and I wanted to use feathers for the cape so it took away the loose conotation of batman being the dark knight, shadow of the night, it became more about a birdman character....plus I wasn't feeling the finish coming and working out the painting details were bogging the piece down

http://www.evrenbilgihan.com/Pages/Sketches/Bat%20Progress.jpg

and then this came about....batman investigating a strange crime scene.....which is my actual entry...sorry about missing the deadline..Damn YOu Oscar!!!

hurricane - really nice work, great piece nothing else really to say

arghmisfit- I really like your piece I would have votted for it ...it it was that type of contest this week...great rendering with the pencil

dogfood- I like the way you handled the black and white, and gray tones...I think what is a little strange is the guy hitting something or just a shadow?

SJ Bennighof- if you pushed the background it would have brought your piece farther to the finish line

jaded yolk- intresting concept I think you are not acheiveing depth to well because the ship and guy have a white halo around them...

great drawings guys! SJ Bennighof, yours is the spitting image of me on my way to Starbucks this morning!

Meta - really nice design. can I ask what you suppose would go in or possibly come out of that opening in her stomach?...I just have to know

Congratulations Paddy!- she truely looks scared, it looks like it should be the movie poster for a Hitchcock film. Artistically - ditto what jack frost said

Hurriccaine, stunning as always. Looking through your body of work, I see that you have many many varieties of monsters living under your bed. These days mine just threaten to keep me up until I can do a decent drawing of them. =T

Jaded Yolk - the settings on my monitor are off and it's too big to fit on the screen :(

Armisfit, your self portait is great! Really nice rendering. It's cool that it's skewed but still fits so nicely on the page

Wax - he's really expressive...good use of values. Is it me or would the light source have illuminated his nose and maybe part of his head? eh, what do I know....

Jack Frost - great Idea for incorporating "shadow" into your piece.

Kleinsmoker - Where's Yours??

I spent more than a few hours on a piece this week but I got terribly hung up on my anatomy....maybe I'll be able to pull something together for next week's challenge.

SJ Bennighof- if you pushed the background it would have brought your piece farther to the finish line

I was thinking the exact same thing, actually, after the fact... I had sort of convinced myself that the main item of importance would be the creature, while disregarding the background proved to make for an ineffective piece... Well, what can I say, my main goal in all this is to improve for the future.

OK, here's a wild man (covering the feral) yelling at a cymbal monkey; the contradiction arises because he's obviously part of the Wasp Coalition, which loves all cymbal monkeys. The confusion comes in if you needed this explanation.

Still working with values (stepping back from color until I can do better with the b&w).

Really nice work all!!! I read this tread a week
ago, and I really thoguth is a great idea, but last
week is did not have had time make someting finished so
I decided to wait untill this weeks topics, and after reading
the word, feral, this is the picture that poped in my mind
a giganting tiger with a magical gem in his forehead, fighting
a warrior girl, in the top of some rock formations, I hope
you like it :D

dogfood: Dam I really like the hands in this fella, and
his expresion looks feral as hell, nothing but love for
this one :D

jaded yolk: nice work, I would suggest to you to
use harder brushes, I like the beast he is riding,
but I think it needs more definition, some
shapes are hard to read (legs and the hands per example)
good work, keep on experimenting!! :D

FIXES: the pose and overall anatomy of the girl
lowere the sharpness of the background rocks
add a little of color variation on the background

as far as the hair on the head goes its just that
I like to stylize hair that way, its a part of my style
at paiting I guess.

I have sum progress saves, I did not
saved all that often in diferent files, but here
they are the ones I have:

first wash; I use very dark unsaturated colors
for this, to avoid over saturating the painting:
step1 (http://img237.exs.cx/img237/7249/tiger13li.jpg)

I pumped out the sat a bit more, I decided to
go for an orange-violet scheme, and blocked in
main shapes, no need for detail here:
step2 (http://img237.exs.cx/img237/289/tiger32cp.jpg)

I started to add sum detail and to clarify the shapes more
step3 (http://img237.exs.cx/img237/8020/tiger43jr.jpg)

more details:
step4 (http://img237.exs.cx/img237/5056/tiger50qf.jpg)

I'll get the ball rolling this time - he's only half organic, and the thing on his back is some kind of weird battery which keeps him alive.

In my mind it was either this or half a potato, converted into one of those crude organic batteries! I ditched that idea because it was just too exciting :)

A Self-propelled, Self-loading, 155mm Mountain Rough Terrain Artillery Unit, (Alliance codename "Longhorn") from Omega Battery, 3rd Battalion, 16th Field Artillery. While difficult to fit with the gun apparatus, they are a marvel of genetic engineering, with diverted spinal cord, vastly enhanced skeleton and musculature, and a service life of 80 years. Armed with laser-guided sabot rounds, they are a battlefield multiplier in their ability to launch on command and allow battle units to terminally guide the munitions. They stink to high heaven, however, with the worst gas known to man.

This one is a real disappointment and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, though I was only able to spend about 90 minutes on it (tough week). Sorry about the long intro.

Define the mechanical parts a bit more, I'd say.

Sorry guys, it's taking more time than I thought to get my website put together. I'll be sure to have one for next week, though.

You see, he swallows the rounds to load up and poops out the shell casings after firing...

I was so disappointed no one mentioned it, but I figured out the art is too poor to portray it well.

Hope you're feeling better soon, Meta. I also hope your weekly design challenge isn't dying. Participation is slipping, but I really like this idea (it's similar to the thread regarding the DSG). Maybe we need some guest artists to crit the works each week (would they be called "critters"?) in order to increase the appeal. We could advertise and get someone to dedicate themselves that Monday to give a short crit for each piece.

Oh, man... I've been out half the week and totally missed Cotron's challenge. Of course, it's probably for the best. I'm certain I'd have done something with zuchinni or cucumbers and that's never good...

I'm up for the next one.

I like the whole idea of this thread. I've been checking it out from time to time.
I know that this is totally late to the max, but here's a sketch I came up for battery, organic, half. I thought I'd post it for kicks and giggles.

In case you can't read it, on the right there's the Copper Top Tester. At full power it's "Stud", but our friend is at minimal, "Premature" power.

ok I said that I would post my wip images from the last contest, however I didn't enter the last contest, so I will show my wips from this week

first are a few rough ideas, sketchs on the words provided by meta

http://evrenbilgihan.com/Pages/Sketches/break.jpg

http://evrenbilgihan.com/Pages/Sketches/break2.jpg

http://evrenbilgihan.com/Pages/Sketches/break3.jpg

now here is the concept that I went with....the idea is that the sabertooth tiger really didn't become extinct, infact aliens had altered them...increasing their intellegance.... so as the numbers of the species began to decline, the cats develop hybernation chambers to survive untill a more tolerant time on earth exsists.....however one of the cat's chamber because weak and cracks causing imdiate awakening,,,,,opening the shudders on the animals room it looks across the west...all out of my ass :)

http://evrenbilgihan.com/Pages/Sketches/catsketch.jpg

http://evrenbilgihan.com/Pages/Sketches/Cat2.jpg

http://evrenbilgihan.com/Pages/Sketches/cat2.4.jpg

http://evrenbilgihan.com/Pages/Sketches/cat2.5.jpg

so here is the finished piece...again still wrestling with how to finish the piece in a way that I would like in photoshop...

Hey, Jack, you know, it might be better to post these out in the main threads. That way, you can say these were done for Meta's challenge and that would be free advertisement for the thread in particular and the Challenge section in general. Keeping this thread a little more orderly (just for the final entries) would just be a secondary effect.

I was in L.A. all last week and have a few hideous sketches of my intial idea for this week, which amounted to a distressed man crawling from a broken canister which had just fallen through the forest canopy. Around him were a few Dodo birds and maybe a unicorn, all innocently curious about him, the cannister, and the sunlight streaming into their forest glen. Looking a little frantic, he was reaching for a tree limb... Yeah, I know. Tripe. So until I was just ready to go to bed, I wasn't able to work it up to something I wanted to even continue when I was struck with an entirely different idea: The Handler. These urban soldiers clear buildings with the aid of their charges. This one is having trouble with the container. It seems to be broken...

About an hour. I could have kept going, obviously, but I had to work today and didn't get any sleep the night before. Why do I hate everything I draw within 12 hours of thinking it was OK?

Same thing happens to me. I think it's like the way beer makes anyone hot. You regret it in the morning. But that chick you took home last night is pretty sexy in her own right.

Thanks, guys. It's actually not everything, just everything that anyone else sees. I am blind to my own mistakes until I post something; then about half of them pop out and haunt me (the other half are surprises until someone points them out, then they haunt me, too).

Does anyone else hear that humming and gargling? I think the fat chick is warming up back stage.

Strong-willed with a complex that some would call "Napoleonic" (just don't call him short). Leader of the "beorgeoisie" in the bloody revolution of 1782 he and his forces toppeled the aristocratic Lancome and Revlon to become the sole Emperor de Toilet. His hunger for power is ever-present, his daily (and nightly) quest continues to be the same thing he does every day (and night): try and take over the world!

all the way i say. the title motivates me more and perhaps we could have it the good ol' way of one definded topic again instead of three words. i've recently come to the conclusion that that didn't work too well for me.
