Yeti(Test of Matte Painting)

This is my first matte painting.Photoshop 7
I hope it will please.
I have made it without copy part of picture with tools(no stamp), but working only with brushes..also all the damn fur of the Yeti!

you should take away the red in its eye, with it ,it looks unnatural in an unnatural way.make the eyes look human or ape. other then that no crits!
looks cold and good.

I like the idea of using the red to draw a bit of focus on the creature, but it might be a better idea of using blood of some deer or something the creature is eating, you can also use a blood trail to lead the eye of the viewer trough your image. can be a strong compositional thing

like that last one a lot, the fur is very cool, and the background is suitably impressive.


wondered about a few things though:

Is he meant to be skidding down the slope because the loose stuff makes it look like he is

When you said you hadn't copied parts of the image, were you meaning infact that you had? Because that rock bottom left is a straight clone of the left photo (darkened and then snowed on), the top right photo is in the centre of the image and the bottom right is used on the right in the distance.

other than this little misunderstanding very smooth indeed.

Great shots man! that detail in the mountains and fur is insane.

I agree the red eyes shoud go, everything is grounded in reality except that.
Yeti is a cool desgin too, looks better with white fur imo.

You might want to bump up the contrast on the fur so that it matches with the levels of the shadows on the rocks. Make sure to use cool colors for shadow instead of grey.

Mort< Not natural but I love that!

Evil< I don't really love the blood in an illustration.
I use blood sometimes but often for dark picture. When it is necessary to show something bleeding.

There is a misunderstanding.
I am bad to express.
I meant that I do not have to use the tool stamps after having taken the fragments of photos.
I even repainted a little bit above.

jtroughton< For me there is enough work on this test.
Lot of small parts aren't perfects but if I should change all wich do not working well, in 4 days I will be always on!

Wow!!

Love the process and everything, the final image is waay cool, though I admit that the picutre would be better off without the tumbling blurs of snow from his feet/hands. It doesnt make sense, it would be more poignant without them.

And the deviation by Mikro...hilarious!!!! lol

BTW, I've always wondered - what IS a matte painting?

Wow. I really like it. For some reaon, he doesn't look as real as the mountains. I dunno if its the scale, the red eyes, or the way the snow is rolling up in front of him, something doesn't look exactly right. Still a great pic. Those mountains are awesome.

Just another "kick the red eyes". If you want to draw attention to the yeti, then make him stand off the background valuewise. Now he is as dark or light as the rocks around him. In fact I tend to look at the sky in the upper right corner, because it's the lightest area of the picture.

I think It would add to the image if you made some light hit the area, the yeti is in. Just my few cents.

so here come a crit.

the snow he is sliding looks outta place. color wise and shape wise. i think the snow would be crumbled and stirred up a bit further down infront of him.. not a lot just enough to help people know he is sliding.. and also i think he would be leaning back more if he is sliding down the hill. i would expect him to tumble head over heels down that hill at the moment..

very nice composition.. and the devation was nice.. lol @ facial expression

Hmm. It looks really good though the yeti and the background just don't come together. The clouds and mountains in the distance are the best part. The snow sliding from the yetis feet doesn't look as finished as the rest of the image.

I love the yeti. Very original. And I think the falling snow is a good touch. Animals jumping around in the snow cause little avalanches like that. Looks good.
