View Full Version : USA Thunderdome (West vs East)

November 15th, 2004, 03:14 PM
Time for a rumble in the states.
http://www.mlentz.com/usamap.jpg
Alaska and Hawaii included in the WC.
The first rule, DEADLINES WILL BE FINAL. No exceptions.
The first step is to gather a list of artists from the West Coast wanting to participate. Reply to this thread to be added to the list. Beginning on the 18th, the East Coast artists will begin challenging (its not too late for WC artists to get in, but the sooner the better, you know?). Challenges will be acceptable until the 21st. At midnight on the 21st PST, the competition begins, challenges end, and you will have 3 weeks to complete your challenge, ending on the 12th at midnight PST. If you don't have a match on the 21st, you are not able to participate, I am sorry. There will be an extra week on this one due to the holidays, and deadlines being FINAL. If your entry arrives at 12:01 on the 13th, I hate to be a bastard, but no dice. You've been warned.
Here's how it works. We'll post the names of the West Coast artists looking to be challenged by an artist from the East Coast. You East dudes and ladies look through and pick an opponent of similar skill. You call them out, and set the perameters of your challenge.
The battles will be judged by 5 judges (not in the US), so far including:
-Joachim
-Molly
-lowpolymatt
-Matt Dixon
-Rusty
Each battle is worth 1 point, with the total number of battles being the total number of points available. Team that scores the most points wins.
PLEASE READ THIS IS IMPORTANT. I DO NOT WANT TO SPEND 4 HOURS RESIZING AND RENAMING EVERYONES WORK.
Please send finished works to
[email protected] with the subject "(CA name) USATD Entry". Please name the file with your name (ex: USATD_jetpack42.jpg) so I can arrange the proper contestants against each other easily. Please have them reduced to 72dpi, and around screen size. If they are greater then 120k, I will not post them. Also, when sending your finished image, include the subject description.

I'm gonna be gone for the last week of this context (3rd-12th), but I'll be damned if I'm gonna let another one of these go by without me giving it a shot. So count me in (and don't hurt me too bad, East Coast).
Oh yeah, and I suppose a link to my art (http://www.forestzachman.com/gallery/art) would help prospective challengers.

http://www.30lives.com/wips/space-invaders.gif
Redesign it with today's technology in mind... that means it's got be designed to be built in 3d, not in sprites, and has to have some detailwork.
Medium/Limits: 1 finished drawing of the design is all that's needed, Ink and Grayscale marker/pen work style kung fu, if you're down for it. (manoman am I askin' fer it.)

blankslatejoe, Aw dude.. that is hi-larious. I'm totally down..
By today's technology, do you mean strictly contemporary? or... futuristic too!
This will be (using my library of relevant 80's slang) Rad!
You're on my friend!
blankslatejoe
November 19th, 2004, 05:09 AM
awesome, helium, way to be speedy in the reply too!
Whoops, By 'today's tech' I only meant that the design shouldn't be geared towards making an 80s style 4bit game, or a flat-side-view-only-style remake.
This would be all about taking those 4 or 5 pixels and imagineering them into something crazy and fully envisioned, but still reminiscint of the original.
So heck yeah, futuristic is probably how I'll go too!
We're on, man!
It will be rad indeed!

Kevin P! Sir I accept your challenge, I choose pistols at dawn.
The work on your site looks fantastic, it would be an honor to challenge your mechanized hot girl x2 kung fu.
Let me think on a topic for a bit, If you have any suggestions let me know - I'm thinking of something with machinery since we both lean that way.
A note on the challenge setup: So the west coast challenges first eh? I feel justified in defending my territory. The east is sluggish in accepting challenges because, well, we know we're better. No need to prove it (haha not really). Also, your momma.

Sounds good! I don't have a lot of experience at creature design so it'll be a good challenge! I notice most of yer stuff is b/w...do you do color also? I, personally, don't, but I'd like to push myself with this, so I'm willing to try a color piece if that's cool.
To narrow the topic a bit, how about we depict a scene with some sort of mother alien defending her young? Obviously the main focus will be on the mother alien and her design, but we'll have a scene that shows a little of her reproductive cycle since we'll see some of her brood there and since she's in a defensive/aggressive posture it should give us an interesting picture.
Whaddya say?
As for mediums, I'm pretty open...I'll probably try some traditional and digital stuff and see which one works better. I really want to try to push myself with this one.

and I had a tough time figuring what would be good but, I started to think that I need more finished pieces in my portfolio so I say We are talking redesign or design
So the challenge would be to create cover art for either a game that you are excited about that hasn't come out yet or a game that came out that you liked by the presentation, i.e. the cover art was crap
no need for text just the image portraying the idea and feel of the game

imager777 Sure! If nobody else challenges me, and it's not against the rules, we could have a 3-way competition; I was in one at one of the previous T-Domes, and the way it worked was, there were two people from one team (Seattle) and one from the other (England), and if one of the Seattle people won, 1 point would be given to their team, and if the Englander won, they would get 2 points, having gone up against 2 opponents.

you know, it might not be a bad idea to have a couple three ways... that way at everyone who WANTS to participate can.
Maybe after a little while of east coast challengers, then the left over west coasters get their pick of duels to jump in on? Kinda a reward for slipping through the cracks, they'll get to know the themes and competitors?
Just an idea..... It'd sure be a shame to have some westcoasters eager and willing, but left out of the fun.

I just thought of an idea for the three way matches. Since two west coasters and one east coaster in a battle would raise the west coasts chance for getting that point, maybe they should be placed 1st 2nd and 3rd by the judges. So if the two west coast got 1st and 2nd then west coast gets two points but if the east coast person gets 1st then they get two points. If the east coast person comes in second then both east and west get one point. Just an idea.
By the way Nimrod, you better have your shxt together because I got the finished designs in the computer and am coloring them already.

I agree, but from an organizational standpoint, it works better for me to get all of one side together, then open things up. Imagine if it were 4 pages of "I'm from the west, who wants some" Then I'd have to sort all that out (with a little help ;) ), and constantly be updating and going through the random threads. In the last 2 thunderdomes I've ran, invariably, a couple people can't make a deadline or whatever, and I get asked about extensions and late entries and whatnot....To be fair, a deadline is a deadline, and I don't want to have to decide those kinds of things anyways. The deadlines was the first thing I wrote in the thread, so its fair for everyone. Not trying to be an ass, just make things run smoother and easier for me...At this point, jump in 3 ways if you want, challenge whoever you want. and it would help to shoot them a PM. We should be able to squeeze everyone in. Just take a look around the site, and find somebody on the opposite coast, and let 'em have it.
Lets say, tonight at midnight is the deadline to get IN on the contest, if you've got a challenge pending, no worries, but you've got to be waiting on a response from the challengee by midnight.
There is absolutely no wiggle room on the December 12th deadline for the finish however. There is alot of entries, so if you do not follow the instructions for submitting your pieces, they may not make it in. It's not difficult.

For everyone who isn't turning in a piece on time. I dug this quote up from the Seattle vs California Thunderdome.
you guys are a bunch of pussies! is it really that hard to draw something? are you really THAT busy? c'mon guys! suck it up and draw some shit! missing deadlines is not pro. and thats as important as skills in the industry this site advocates. life is nothing but deadlines, get used to it, and in the real world, if you miss a deadline, you might not eat. i think if we are to take an educational stance, we need to be strict about this, as it is an important lesson, just as important as the quality of the image itself. mine is no gem. but i took the one day i have had off in weeks, and sat down and drew it. is that really too much to ask of all of you? especially you guys in school! shit what i wouldnt give to have a student's schedule right now.....-c36
No excuses or complaints allowed.
Late pieces will be displayed, but they will not be judged.

i purposefully did not post my image, i saw that MCM was not on your received list and i opted to not post mine. it is such an honor to being drawing against him that i do not want to receive automatic points. i want the battle to be fair. hey Jon, we can settle this in our own battle if necessary.

Nimrod- WHat happened buddy? I was having to do two illustrations a week for school and got a surprise eviction by my landlord and my fiance force me into spending two whole days apartment shopping and then had to spend 3 whole days moving my crap into a new apartment, and I squeezed in 5 hours to make something for this. Turn in something and we'll have it in another thread and have it judged or something. I don't want to have just posted a 5 hour piece of crap for nothing.

No real excuse, other than the usual stuff (blah blah blah school, blah blah blah personal strife, laziness, forgetfulness, cranky webserver blah blaaah). I do have something, 3 b/w sketches... Do you want to make another thread? or maybe I can just post mine in the EastvsWest thread and we'll just say you won. Or whatever, is cool with me. Really like yours btw :D
