Your wait is finally over.

Thunderdome 8's topic will be, Redesigning classic 1980's cartoons.

The entries will be judged on these four scales:
Re-Design (Originality, Functionality, overall badassness)
Presentation (How well is the artwork)
Fan Value (does the work credit the characters)
Judge's Tilt (The judges will be able to push a few points to their favorite entries)

Some examples of classic 1980's cartoons are:
Adventures of Johnny Quest
Transformers
He-Man and the masters of the universe
Fraggle Rock
Jem and the holograms
Jetsons
Dungeons and Dragons
Duck Tales
Real Ghostbusters
She-Ra
M.A.S.K.
and MANY more.

Guidelines:
This is NOT fan art. There must be a visible redesign to cartoon.
One entry per artist, yet you can have multiple designs in one image.
NEW ART ONLY, if you designed transformers before.... and submit it as your entry, it will be declined...trust me it will be known if it's older work.
The Cartoons must have been in an animated forum and popular to SOME DEGREE( meaning they weren't some local nerd cartoonist that no one ever saw his work. )

Judges:
Not yet set.

Due Date: October 31st(Halloween)

Prizes:
First place, 1 Free CA workshop admission + CA T-shirt
Second place, Original artwork from Marko Djurdjevic + CA T-shirt
Third place, CA T-Shirt

Hopefully we can ring along some other prizes along the way, but we would really like to get this rolling.

Damn cartoons were so much better back then... Look at the crap kids have to grow up with now, pokemon and all of those wannabe cartoons like pokemon. But I guess if you gotta catch em all, you gotta catch em all. So many choices in cartoons, I duno what to pick yet. Anyone know if jabber jaw and grape ape were 80's cartoons, they werent up on that 80's cartoon site.

Clarification please, Thunderdome gods -

Redesigning classic 1980's cartoons

So far all the cartoons mentioned have been TV shows. Does the topic also include feature films, printed media etc.? In other words, can we redesign any '80's cartoon..?

davi
September 25th, 2004, 02:08 PM
they can be a cartoon movie or tv show, basicly anything animated is what we are getting at.

What cartoons were there in Sweden on gov television at that time? I can't remember a single one, except one about an ufo, some kids and a robot with a drawer in the belly. There were some plant men too that captured them and tied them up to a table :G

Prom, i think the only cartoons on swedish TV in the 80's were Disney, Bamse, and some russian crap.. and Hanna Barbera of course.. Flintstones and Scooby Doo..

We had a cable TV though, so i got to watch all the other stuff too.

Hmm, I'm definitly doing the smurfs.. love those little blue critters. Got some wicked ideas for Gargamel and Azrael..

Of course I remember Ronin Warriors... I was actually considering doing them.... That or Thundercats or Silverhawks. I just can't decide.

I'm sure you'll find some Ronin Warrior sites... I searched for less then a minute and found a RW webring. Only five sites are on the list though, but come on I only searched for a minute...

September 25th, 2004, 06:19 PM
How about some guidelines for the presentation...maybe a picture of the original cartoon would be helpful, just to have something to compare...color, action, background? etc...

Will there be a td8-forum with wip-threads? Only finished images in a thread? etc...

Very cool subject btw...

cool EDIT: not cool, cuz it makes the list even bigger

EDIT2, NEVERMIND, cuz I am picking: *drums* GUYVER :D - bio booster armor

the anime is from 1989, so woot that was a close one :), but it seems that there was 1986's Guyver: Out of Control and the '89 series was a cut up version of that movie from 86, so its cool

wait.. are we suppoed to call and reserve a particular series or characters? I would imagine that more than one person can interperate such characters/series a number of different ways.

Helium Macaroni
September 26th, 2004, 08:14 PM
Well, say some of us wanted to do transformers, but do a whole slew of them.. I'd redesign all the major characters I suppose.. so i dont see the point in reserving any particular characters. I'd imagine that the contest would be very interesting seeing the many many variations to be gotten out of several different characters, done by any number of different people. That really hasn't been specified, so sorry to be stepping on any toes, but I'd like to do several TF redesigns.

Correct me if I'm wrong - but there's no limitation on what 80's cartoon you take, or which characters. However, someone will probably look for something exclusive, which is why people are saying what they plan to do, plus, it gives something to look forward to :)
If memory serves me right there's only one final image, which may contain any number of characters

I was considering dinoriders. I never watched it (I was born in '86), but I saw it on that site of 80's cartoons.

you don't know what you missed. The human space-hippy Valorians (led by Questar) were fighting the evil mutant Rulons (led by Krulos) when they went back to the time of the dinosaurs in order to escape. Of course the Rulons followed them ended up in the mesozoic erra too. So when they were all finally there, they were like, "hey. Wouldn't it be cool if we took all the futuristic junk we brought and made dinosaurs wear it?...And we could like ride the dinosaurs and fight eachother and shit" And everyone else was like "yeah, that'd be sweet! We'd sell a ton of toys too!" So that's what they did.

Season 1 ended with all of them trying yet again to escape and instead they went to the ice-age with saber-tooth tigers, wooly mamoths and cave-men. They released a whole new series of toys to go with the new "season 2" setting but for some strange reason season 2 never came. I was only five years old and when I got up early on that particular Saturday morning expecting to see Dinoriders. I truly felt robbed when something else had replaced it. That was when I knew without a shadow of a doubt that humanity could not be trusted and would try to screw me out of my favorate cartoons at every possible chance.

HugeHarHar

If we're allowed to claim stuff, I claim Little Nemo. If we're not claiming stuff, I'm still doing it.

This rocks for real.

(EDIT) DOH!! The original comics we're made in like 1902, the books were made in 1986, the game was made in 1990, and the movie was made in 1992. Dammit. So there goes that.

Sweet! An opportunity to relive my childhood... so many favourites...

Super Ted

Legend of Zelda (I was obsessed and they only ever showed it once a week :\ as apart of Mario Brothers.... that was good too)

Mighty Mouse! Danger mouse was good too but not as good as M&M.

Dinoriders... I must have rewatched the first season several times over. I had alot of the episodes on tape as well... I watched them so many times they got streched and were thrown away.

Voltron! When I was a todler I had a Voltron Booster seat for the car, I kept it 'till it fell apart, I loved the damn thing.

Samurai Pizza Cats is 1990... otherwise that would be awesome :[ altho production was 1989... does that still count :^^;:

Mr.T!.. Roflmao... I never watched it but I thought it would be worth mentioning.

Garfield... probably better than the new 3D version except it doesn't have Jeniffer Love Hewitt :P.

Inspector Gadget - But I guess everybody here liked that show

Scooby Doo when Scrappy became a regular character... I used to find him funny when I was a kid.

... now I'm going to go to e-bay and see if I can find any Voltron Toys :bashful:.

EDIT: Can't forget Transformers, it was awesome, still love it.

Holy crap! I can't believe what I found. After an obsessive google-crazy dino-rider search, I found this. The pilot episode (http://www.x-entertainment.com/pics4/dino-riders.rm) in realmedia format available for download. If you've never seen it, you're in for a treat. How could you not instantly fall in love with cartoon with lines like "we mean you no harm, my huge friend!"

I'm so doing Thundarr the Barbarian. I remember really loving that show as a kid, dispite the fact that if I saw it now I'd probably throw something at the TV. So, I'm gonna take my fond memories from childhood and try to combine them with my grown up sensibilities and rework the idea. Besides...it's post-apocalyptic...with magic...coolest thing evAr!

Excuse me all,

Please forgive my ignorance - I've been luking on these boards for donkey's years, but rarely post.
To 'enter' the Thunderdome, do we just post our art on the thread when it becomes available, or do we actually make some form of formal entry?

I think that I'll be having a crack at Ulysses 31.

Haha, I too was sitting on Dino-Riders...greedily hogging it for myself. I have the first season on old old VHS, so, muahahaha. From now on, I'll get in the spirit of sharing. In that vein, I was thinking of some awesome 80s cartoon movies...Secret of Nimh, Land Before Time, and ah, I can't bring myself to reveal the last one! It's just too cool and I need all the help I can get;-) Someone mentioned Dinosaucers also, and that was another short-lived, by very cool cartoon.

Question though! There are so many cool ideas I have, the hardest part of this competition might be narrowing them down! It says one entry per artist, but multiple designs per entry are allowed. So can we for example get a Shredder vs. Skeletor vs. Mum-Ra battle going, or do rules require that we limit our concept to one show/film? Inquiring minds want to know.

Thunderome80's! Ooooohman, SUCH an awesome topic. I'm getting a huge flood of memories just reading people's posts, and just as many ideas on recreating some of my favorites.

I've got a few obscure ones I'm hoarding and not sure I'm going to use... :D Whoever is doing the smurfs, I know we can expect some truly wacky stuff.

By the way, there was this cartoon I barely remember from my childhood... don't remember the title or anything but I watched it a lot. There was a human girl, and two koala bears, a pink girl one who floated in a bubble, and a bigger boy koala, and they had magic adventures...am I just imagining this show and hallucinating?

Some doubts...
Since there are animation series redesings, are there the desings limited to this field (animation)? Or the hypothetic end doesn´t care (...2D animation series, 3D, games, film,....)?

I ask this because the look of the final images is very diferent if they´re polished and clean lineart like a traditional animation model sheet or if it would be used as concept desings for 3D models or film, game,....?

Just wondering......

I SO wanted Chorlton and the wheelies...but its 76' to 79' :(

I don't know if all of these fall within the 1980's...Im checking...

The Clangers
Count Duckula
The Flumps...do stop frame animations count? I'm assumig they do if Fraggle Rock is ok?
Transformers...
Ulysses 31
ahh wow....Trap Door!!!
Mysterious Cities of Gold...classic
Terahawks (puppets?)

I think I'll be doing one of these...Dominion Tank police and appleseed are calling me....If thats deemed ok..davi?

Dominion Tank Police (4 oav's in 1989, Japan) Dunno if or when it was aired..but I had all the comics..still have most of em too...
or
Bubblemn Crisis (1987-90, USA)
Appleseed (OAV in 1988)...like to do this one too...
The Moomins? 80's?
Willow the wisp....I think this is the one for me if I cant do Dominion....
Dogtanian...classic

Oh and also...do The Thunderbirds and joe90 etc count? Because I'd love a go at them...

Amazing coincidence that I just finished this piece last night. I'm not sure that it qualifies as a redesign, but I thought I'd put it here anyway. I'll probably work up some other designs before too long.

http://www.tylerwalpole.com/boards/venger.jpg

Question. If you're only allowed to post one image per user in the "final images" thread, does that men we should pick just one main character to focus on or something? Or just lump all designs into one pic, I guess.

Woof! Well I watched way too many cartoons in the 80's.

My initial thought was G.I. JOE, but there is no way I can redesign enough of that in the time frame given.

Then I was like "HE-MAN!". That got the blood pumping. Then I saw Marko's post.

Then there was a dramatic pause followed by this dialogue.

Dammit.

I'm still doing He-Man.

Being 23 and watching an innordinate amount of telly means all the cartoons sort of merge through from the eighties to the nineties and the ones I wanted to do are very early nineties, which is, well annoying to say the least.

NOBODY CHOOSE THESE THEY'RE NOT 80s,
captain simian and the space monkeys,
pirates of dark water,
SWAT KATZ,

so I'm gonna have to go for Thundercats I guess, can't compete for HE-MAN.

or possibly defenders of the earth, with the phantom and his power of ten tigers which usually turned out to be 6 or 7.

the really disturbing thing about this is that I still know most of the theme tunes

Is there going to be a Thunderdome 8 WIP thread or anything? I'd like to see the progress and rough sketches of some of these I'm sure.

Vyle-I checked out Goldorak and it aired in Japan between 77-79.
But it was bought and aired in america in the 80's....... does that count ???

MikeCorriero-WHAT ???? Nobody's doing smurf ???? I was looking forward to a smurf showdown !! Wasn't Groover talking about smurf's ??

Battle of the Planets is not an 80's cartoon.

'Battle of the Planets' first aired in the US in the late seventies, and the original Gatchaman I series on which it is based was produced between 1972-74.

Bah. This Thunderdome is really making me feel my age - all the cartoons I remember from my childhood were produced in the 70's or earlier... :grandpa:

Aly Fell

Being 23 and watching an innordinate amount of telly means all the cartoons sort of merge through from the eighties to the nineties and the ones I wanted to do are very early nineties, which is, well annoying to say the least.

Tell me about it Paddy! Being an old fart, I remember '70's cartoons :afroboy: of which I think, Captain Caveman is.

What about the drawing style?

I mean cartoons are normally cellshaded or with a less amount of smooth shadow to keep the workflow optimized...now a presentation with fully rendered and shaded figures like we do most time over here at ca.org could distract from the functionality and make comparison harder...

So shall we draw in cartoon-like rendering/coloring?

Dennal Floss: Hell yeah it counts!! Goldorak was played in France for a bout 15 years almost non stop. And started in the late 70's. So it had to be playing in the 80's

Cetain people seem to think there are certain rules.

As far as I know.. You can't CALL a topic.. everyone can do what they want, there can be 20 people doing he-man.

Also, I believe you can do these realistically or cartoonish or whatever you want, just because your redesigning a cartoon doesnt mean that you have to draw it in that style.

If im wrong..please correct me.

btw- I didnt say no one was doing smurfs, i just saw that some people said its gonna be too hard. I think smurfs are the best characters to go with since there is a lot you can do with them. The whole subject of smurfs is fantasy related anyways. I'll have to do some real research into the original concept of it all though.

good luck on that mikey :confident
i was gonna try smurfs as well, but just wasnt gettin anything i wanted to work with, but im sure you can do somethin worthy!!
at anyrate, this topic is great, LOTS of subject matter, cant wait to see some of these designs!

No claymation ,Stopmotion or puppets. Fraggle Rock also had a cartoon hence it is allowed.

You can do the full cast of your cartoon if you like. Your allowed more than one character (from the same cartoon) just keep it to one image only. You can pretty much do whatever you like with your image just keep it below 1500 pixels.

what year was "Samurai Pizza Cats" made?..

Hey Davi...Is Don Bluths "Dragons Lair" counted in this?.I dont know if you remember it,but i remember it more than anything from the 80`s..I consider it more an animation than a game..
It was made in `83,im gonna have a go at that one if its allowed.

my other faves r probably gonna be pimped to death ,Thundercats ,Transformers,G.I.JOE,HE-MAN,D&D,TMNT

I need a definitive "Hell Yeah" or "Hell No" for doing the Herculoids due to the date thingy.

The Herculoids debuted on CBS Saturday mornings on September 9, 1967, and ran until September 6, 1969. Reruns of the show were later shown as part of NBC's Go Go Globetrotters show in 1978. New episodes of The Herculoids were created in 1981 for NBC's Super Stars which also featured new adventures of Space Ghost, as well as adventures that featured the the characters of both classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons together.

Let me know whatcha think.
Cheers,
D

D, we can extrapolate that the answer is:

Hell yeah!

by looking at Davi's first example, "The Adventures of Johnny Quest". This series originated in the 60's, as well, with an 80's rebirth. Somewhere in this thread, he further OK'ed anything which originally aired in the 80's. The Super Stars where newly created adventures for all of the characters involved and fall into the category "originally aired".

I have, however, no authority to definitively judge, but only look at what has already been put forth.

Aw, I don't think we should do shows that were resurrected from the 60s...Quest, Space Ghost, Herculoids...there were so many great shows from that period taht it could be a Thunderdome by itself. That said though, Davi did list Quest in his original post, so I guess I'm out voted:-P

Dammit, where has ConceptArts.org been all my life? This Thunderdome is such a freaking brilliant and fun idea! It's so neat to see everybody all fired up, I cant wait to see what you all come up with!

My first instinct was Thundercats, been fiddling with it, but I TOTALLY forgot about THUNDARR THE BARBARIAN!! I see a couple others mentioned it. I might switch over to that, we'll see where the winds blow me (I considered Starblazers--my fave! But it's perfect as is...anybody remember Mighty Orbots? Great animation!)

Might take some time off from my daily sketches to work up something finished...
