Holy Sh*t :jawdrop: You guys are just fantastic. Poshspice, I'm in love...that piece is just awesome. How long did you spend on that? I'd love to see a WIP or tutorial, but we're probably not that fortunate. Also, the lowpolymatt vs. benzo contest looks to be a close one. I love how both of them incorporated the chosen themes into their pieces...whoever loses this one got robbed! Molly, DarkMatter, and sketchling also put together some very impressive pieces. Great job everyone!

Holy crap, this is too cool, 2 great T-domes in 2 days, kind of sensory overload but who cares!!!! Great stuff guys! Can't wait to see the rest of the entries.

Stand outs so far:

The Bird- "Meat Wagon" Great sketches, great execution, very excited about this one.

Vyle- Not one but 2, you and dirty c seemed to take a similar color approach, tough competition, I think I might like the second one better but they're both great and you had great sketches too. This looks like it would be a great story, something like "Iron Giant".

Dirty c- Nice, funny actually

Nero- Great drawing

Blobs- Crazy monster, looks like an angry attacking orifice

Darkmatter - Nice alien pet combo, kind of old school pulp cover

Matt Dixon- Red Sonja??? or it's a real person out of history? Nice

Poshspice vs Nimrod - Really tough competition, great pieces both of you.

Nimrod- great drawing , love the ornateness of the armor, would this guy live in just as detailed kind of world?? I would love to see that.

Posh- Alistair, great piece! Man I want to meet your models for these things! Beautiful women, nice attention to detail, love the background. You should be painting royalty cause they have a very regal feeling to them or old school portrait. ;) Amazing rendering skills! If I was to say anything I'd say it's sort of similar to your last piece and I'm not sure about a warrior using her sword like that. Still amazing though. Can't believe I was competing against you last time...so out of my league.

Lowpolymatt vs Benzo- Another good one.

Lowpolymatt- I think yours is one if not my favorite composition of the bunch, very dynamic and I love your choice of colors, kind of reminds me of a digital version of a N.C. Wyeth piece. very nice.

Benzo - Another interesting composition choice, reminds me of crime scene photos.

Great Job all!!!     Inspiring ,Inspiring, Inspiring. :bashful:

Edit: Wow, Molly I missed yours somehow in the first go around, great job. Great character and great enviroment.

Damn guys! Some top notch work all around! Looks like people need some classes in time management... or just deadlines  Same as our TDome.

Killer jobs.

Vyle: Both of yours rock! Though I actually like the second one more I think, but I don't know... whatever, they both kick ass!

Benzo: Great angle; strong simple composition... well done! WELL done!

Poshspice vs. Nimrod: Great pieces both of you! I love color and b&w... great stuff.

Blobs: awesome creature! I'm a sucker for anything with a mouth in its stomach.

Molly: Hot damn that's hott! great sense of action, wind whirling, shit flying everywhere!! WHOOOOA!

MSync: Great texture and a wonderful mood. I love the color choices; well done!

Nice freakin work everyone. I really like nimrods, she is sexy. But beside that, I really like how everything was rendered, especial the coat and boots. Dixon you got some reallt interesting brush work in there, I am still trying to figure out how you do it in photoshop. How you do those strokes, i just dont get it yet. I really hope someone vs. new york state soon, I want to do something so bad!! Good luck to everyones pieces.

Sok N Wett: Thanks buddy. I'm just about to go over to the Seattle TDome and check out yours! :teeth:

Lowpolymatt vs Benzo: I really like what both of you have done here. Nicely stylised.

Poshspice: That is just superb. My favourite entry. It's sort of like, what if Britney Spears was a nazi... ;)

Sketchling vs MSync: Both great entries. I love the halo she's wearing Kim.

dirty_c vs Vyle: Glad to see that the picture reads okay now Chris, good work. Vyle, those are some gorgeous colours.

Molly: Whoa! Did you make the right choice with that elemental or what? :D Well done!

TheBird: That really made me laugh. Amazingly handled as well.

Darkmatter, Matt Dixon: I thought your two images were competing for a minute! Great stuff from both of you.

Blobs and Nero's master: Great monsters, nicely done.

Anyone I've missed, sorry for not leaving a comment, I've only just woken up from a heavy night! It's nothing personal, everything here has shown a lot of skill. Well done.

Bojee - Thanks man, glad you like it! I had a real hard time getting something that I was happy with, something that had all 3 elements of the subject in it and something that worked contextually...I also wanted it to be 'based' on historical facts rather than being pure fantasy....The 'dark Ages' grounded me on that one...adding in the crescents and the worm were more incidental. I had a lot of fun with colour because I got a bit fed up of the same old palletes...and as for the composition....that fell out of just doing it...

Bobotheseal - Holy F**k...you're going to give Mr MattD a real run for his money there!

Madoliane - Thanks baby! *smile*

Really looking forward to the remainder of the submissions. As far as mine is concerned, I was lucky to have some spare time last weekend to dedicate to tightening things up... sorry it's another girl  It's meant to be 'Lady Frances Drake sets forth from Plymouth with the fleet to battle the Armada, AD 1588'.

Thanks Sketchlikng. I think I actually lost it in the last stage, when I decided to blur the background to add some depth of field. Didn't work :(. I'm glad I submitted at all though, given how I was feeling about time at the end there. I'm taking this particular pic as a learning experience more than anything, cause I don't think I pulled it off, but it was a radically different approach, subject matter, and method for me, so frankly, just getting out of bed for me the next day made me a winner I reckon :)

Vyle, very nice buddy. Blending orange into purple? Damn, just watch me turn that brown!

What a turnout! There's some really impressive work here, and everyone who submitted deserves to pat themselves on the back - well done!

Posh and DarkMatter already know what I think of their splendid work - opinions which I'm pleased to note are shared with just about everyone else, from the looks of things! I'm also particulalry fond of MSync, Vyle, BoBo and Molly's submissions, but it's really hard to choose favourites amongst such a rich crop...

benzo
September 25th, 2004, 02:08 PM
yes a great turnout!

lowpolymatt-
nice comp, great color, depth, the closeup is in your face. used all the elements, i'm very impressed with this and your process....
you came up with a lot of ideas but you also followed through on them, man again great lighting and color. personally i don't like
how the crescents are attached, i would have used the shape less literally in the weapon design, i'd also like to see this in a
widescreen 1:1.85 comp to see if you could get the same amount of depth in that because the elements you have are very strong and
I'd like to see how to balance them horizontally, again awesome work and look forward to more and perhaps rematch sometime in the future!

nimrod- i like what you have going here, remind me of hindu gods like rhama and brahma. your pose is very tricky, but i think it could be more dynamic
next time i'd really work on the pose and try to capture more diagonal... try to capture the imbalance of running like they do in the comics,
also you have really captured the twist in the shoulders and somewhat in the pelvis, and the arms and legs are very 3d, but i think the torso
is a bit flat and show more of a twist or pinch. please make this in color i want to see!

poshspice- great work! I hope you can show us your process or tell us at least

DaveTheOriginal vs cotz- cool work, i enjoy the composition in the second. ahh star wars, what can i say? star wars....if only anakin didn't
speak in episode one and knew exactly what he was doing, it would be awesome. silent people are scary....

Msync- nice piece, good pose would like more detail in the body to be a little closer to the face, but it works!

Sketchling- I really like this! great mood and kind of creepy

Pixelherder vs Maldrin- these are really creepy!

Rhaucan vs DarthSalamander- I like the storytelling you have going in both of these. I think the values in each could be worked on more,
more contrast or work on a mood, push the darks, but most of all value consistency throughout the pieces. good job

dirty_c- you are so close with this one, i think the the needs to be more depth defined with sharp and soft edges, some more shadow, and atmospheric
perspective

vyle- man you always make it fun!

Matt Dixon- kiera knightly with boobs, i mean breast implants:) i like it, i was going for something like this with my character, but she ended up
less of a design than a composition. Thanks for helping with this contest!

Bobo- man you are getting good! this is awesome!!! you keep outdoing yourself, and those texturing skills are really kicking ass.
that axe is wicked i can't rag on anything here

DarkMatter- interesting, i think the saucer and the creature need to have dark, sharp edges like she does to help bring that whole group forward from the bg, but you win!

blobs- cool creature

Molly- whao i just saw the face in it now! i like the abstract qualities; you've really progressed, all i can say is keep it up!
ok, maybe sharpen some edges around the hole in the twister, theres a lot of space at the top that is dead. the bottom half is right on!
hmm, maybe crop the top some more? its good to see an environment, well, kind of an environment/ character. again, keep this up!

Nero's Master- cool design- i would push the hindquarters back in space somehow

youngpaddy1 vs jzero

ok, what's with all this nazi stuff? youngpaddy wins with the face, jzero I'm digging the everything but the face. the pose, color, line, composition
is right on though

the_bird- awesome work! i liked your process thumbnails a lot too

zram- nice!

I had fun with this everyone; depending on the outcome we'll see about the next challenge. I think I enjoyed the process more than the execution for a first time,
just working out the composition, and of course I could still pick away at it forever... there's a few more things I'd like to do to it.

Hey Benzo..yeah the crescent scythe's....I had a lot of thoughts on this. I initially started off with crescent swords but that looked way too eastern and hence wasn't really along the dark age theme. The scythes started off as Hlaberds like the ones you used to get in Diablo2 but again...they just didn't echo the crescent enough for my liking.

I guess I took each of the theme subects very literally...I think because they were 3 distinct words. If it had been 'fantasy image with a worm and a curve' I think that would have steered me in a completely different direction. My initial response to the themes was to look up dark ages and find out what it really was...because I knew I could work in a worm and a crescent somehow...

Widescreen would be interesting, although I think this particular setup gains a lot from the vertical...looking at the face them slowly moving up and back into the distance...in a widescreen format it might not work as well...but hey who knows!

As for the rematch....well after the results are in eh ;) But yeah...that'd be well cool.

BLIMEY !!!

Alot of artists from whom I haven't seen any of their work yet... and what a revelation !!!

Beautifull pieces everybody !!
Lowpollymatt : I like the new direction you took.......wasn't expecting that at all. Even though the "other" was much darker, this one tells a bigger story. Nice mood.

The zepelin chick, the minotaur, the heroins....... the aliens, the monsters, the colors, the horror, the crash kabang, the HHHOOoooaaAAYY !!!!

All great!!!

Didn't even touch this forum all weekend, just waiting to see what would happen when everybody got theirs in. Didn't make it to Sketch Group either, so I dunno what's up with our peeps who didn't submit.

I don't have to echo what everyone else has said, that all of this work is top freaking drawer in one way or another. But I just did. Just a few comments...

benzo, the Nazi stuff is coming from me, I have been waiting for a long time to do a Nazi Space Program piece, esp. since Hellboy's 'Conqueror Worm' jazzed me so. Just a fascinating subject for the production designer in me, what would the Reich's space stuff have looked like? That's as far as it goes. My entry here is supposed to be a propaganda magazine cover.

youngpaddy1, I know you were intimidated by my sketch, but you still owned me on the girl's face, buddy! Good job!

poshspice, I don't have to sing your praises or lay into you and question the cicumstances of your birth, everyone has already lauded and cussed your name. But you remain rocking all the same, dude. You need to get a technique thread together if you haven't already, and show us how you work that magic.

Nimrod, even bigger-ups to you, homeboy, for taking on the poshspice juggernaut! Them's some cojones on you, man! Yours is a beautiful piece, its sketchiness almost obscures its detail, but there's some forms and perspective in there I don't know how you managed. I think the ACR looks like an afterthought for the topic, I would expect something much more ornate, given the guy toting it. But your technical skills shine anyway.

Everyone else, congrats on making a good show of it! GO DALLAS!

The obligatory WOOO-HOOOO for us!

Or should that be Yeeeeeee-HAAWWWW!!! --???

Hey, we thrashed an entire nation!! Notice how close that score was, though. Everybody stepped up and did a fine fine job, and even the people who didn't submit probably had a good reason. And here's to more of this excellent gentlemanly bareknuckle fisticuffs in the near future.

Thanks man. Don't worry about the subject matter, it was good to stretch my mind a bit, and it wasn't nearly as challenging as my own decision to change completely my style and method of approach. And you totally deserved to win. Congrats.

Congrats to everybody who pushed themselves further and turned in a piece. Lots of high quality work in here...and I loved both of your pieces, Vyle!

Looks like Seattle has a date with Dallas in the near future...but we've got a show to work on at the moment.

Good job to all, and a hardy "hey now" to the organizers.

EDIT: Hey congrats all! Close one indeed...

Lowpolymatt- Thanks!
Phuzion - Thanks dude! Really like your concepts on your site.
DaveTheOriginal - Thanks dude...I like the composition on your Star Wars piece.
Sketchling - Thanks! I weasled out of a background though...Very nice piece yourself!
Matt Dixon - Thanks dude. Your piece rocks!
Benzo - Thanks! Agreed...should have spent more time on some of the other details...Your composition rulez. Love the choice of limited color.

I thought everybody did a great job. I have some personal faves including Benzo's, Poshspice, Cotz, Vyle's, MattDixon, BLobs, Molly and Bird.

It was cool to be a part of this. Would love to see some entries from people here in the Thunderdome 8 arena. Redesign of 80's cartoons...gonna try and get my lazy ass to produce somethiung for that!

Cheers!

Well, consider me completely friggin impressed with the amount a coolness that showed up here for the Beefdome. Awesome work from both sides.

Super mad back patting priz-ops to Nimrod, Posh Spice, Benzo, MSync, and Matt Dixon. Color me impressed, (and a little bit intimidated.)

Now I'm gonna have to take a swing at that 80's cartoon redesign as well. Thanks for all the inspiration.
