September 22nd, 2004, 04:41 AM
Here are the results from the Seattle vs California Thunderdome. Each piece will have a number and a letter for easy judging.
Judges will be:
-Joachim
-gaboartpage
-mcotie
-sparth
-wes9000
Judging will take place on Thursday (One last chance for the tardy), and once I have recieved the results from al the judges, I will post the final score.
Please PM me if any of the matches have the wrong subjects, I'm going on what I was e-mailed...
The matches are listed loosely on the order they were sent. The images are not listed in the order that the names are (the person from Seattle is always named first, the challenger second) but the images are in a random order for easier impartial judging.
I'm not home for days at a time, sometimes, so if we are waiting for your submission, be patient with me please. I will post as soon as I recieve.
Without further ado.
I will put a * next to the winners names.

Way to go, everybody! I finally got my internet working, just in time to see the list of entries this morning. El Coro's reminds me of these horrible characters in a book I read, and I think Prostate's giving him a run for his money in the hideously creepy factor. Those creepy children aren't much better, either. ;) Geh..
mos667, if you can't make it, that's all right, I understand... maybe there could be a day or two extention for you or something, if you still wanted to give it a shot. I'd love to see yours done.
Yey art! :perv:

Note to self: Learn coloring and master Kekai's process, then learn El Coro's technique and draw outrageous, ludicrious, misguided thoughts, to disturb the normal society......excellent.....
Great job everyone, for those who busted their ass on getting it on time, congrats.
INTERN: Thanks for taking me on man, it really helped me to push my lazy ass to draw, good job on getting your drawings on time.
Grinn: Nice, damn I could of told you a tutorial on a website that teaches you how to draw a horse, then you wouldn't have to take all those time researching it.
Jetpack: Good job, you da the man!
Nova: I get lost in those eyes....coolness
Groover Mcnab: Hmmm, Can't figure out which one is your SP the robot or the guy with the sword..... :}
Sapphire: Woohoo you won! Mos667 was too scarred to take you on (j/k)....that's 2-0 for you, congrats.
Bojee: Thanks for the comment, scary picture yo, made me wet my paints...oh nm it was just coke that spilt on me.
Stephen: Nice and Dark...me likes
Phuzion: Man I love that cel shading style you got going for the color, make it seem like they are from an animation, now why don't American cartoons look like that...
Dougbot: Damn forizzle shizzle, dizzle with a sprinkle of coolnizzle, that's awesome....the colors oh the colors.
Inspector Lee: Nice work, love the robot.
EliWolff: OHHHHH nice!
LadyLioness: Amazing job
Flaptraps & Chaotic Logik: Damn you guys rock, that's a hard one.
Redehlert vs Alger Langdon: Freaky, I couldn't stop watching my back once every 5 minutes because of some noise.
Michael78 vs Sinix : Mike love that suit design, Sinix great job dude.
Ben Mauro: I'm glad you finish something, great work, Robots eat fruit??, well maybe yours do.
nardfrog vs phil holland: Shit dude, I need to learn coloring to get as good as you two.
i.was.ink : Like the Mcdonald's slogan, "I'm Lovin' It"
Dished: good work man, I don't know you, but who cares, i'm loving this T-dome thang.
Oregano vs otis: That's a hard one, I love em both, but the uglier the better right...
If I'm missing anyone it's probably because you didn't send in your work yet, and I'm anxiously waiting for them, so get them crackin'

the coro pic is great. The composition is easy, and has a deffinate vertical flow to it, plus the story that goes along with it is great. The mother giving all of her resources to her kids in agony out of motherly love...buahahaha.
What's up with that kid poking her vagina though? O_o

The contest really came together nicely, lots of great matchups. Someone make el coro and prostate have a matchup every week.. that's killer stuff. Actually flaptraps might be my personal favorite for the thunderdome.. love the old school joystick, it'd look cool on my wall.. absolutely great job on that. :teeth:
Heh, michael, looks like we both went for the same pose.. I was almost gonna do the cockpit view too, have that metal arm gripping a wheel or yoke or something. Cool idea with the costume. :cheerleader:

Prostrate Sunrise- my 2nd favorite.. amazing style.. The chicks doo is great!
flaptraps vs Chaotic Logik- these are both great.. I like how they focus on the "controller".
Sok N Wett- NICE! The best work ive seen of yours.

HAHAHAH! GREAT entries you guys! some of you really poured your hearts into these, and i applaud you for that. as for mine, well, its good to exorcise those demons occaisionally. i think thats one of the best things about art, is that you can draw ANYTHING :)
Nardfrog: haha you only caught that one? i omitted all kinds of body parts to help the flow of the piece more, particularly on the right side, where the movement first begins. i had all the bodies drawn out, but i felt certain things were distracting, so i just cheaped it.i have a hard enough time composing 2-3 characters, but 14 proved to be quite a challenge for an afternoon :)
again, GREAT ENTRIES GUYS!!!!-c36

Don't worry about it lNTERN, at least you turned yours in, we are still waiting for others, you took the initiative to do your part, and that's deemed respectable. This was a good learning experience for me and everyone else. This was to have fun, and it succeeded in that part, regardless of who's winning or losing, we're still going to challenge another state or country, and everyone wins because they gain something out of it. Good job on your piece man I love that nazi guy with the facemask. Even after this thunderdome you'll have many more challenges, and good luck on that, and progress as an artist, that's the key to success.......Damn I feel like Tony Roberts giving a life seminar.

I just wanted to be the first one to rip on myself for biting Capcom style in my pic.. I thought Double dragon was from capcom originally but I think it was acclaim . .. . oh well.. damn.. I am stunned by alot of entries..
Stokes - Not bad man, Action is pretty tough . . Where's billy in yours man?.. I had a hard time with this one.. I hate my lame colors.. worked on it for 2.5 hours only though.. hehe.. I'm a slacker. . .
El-coro- That is disgusting... seriously. Great details in the children.. I think it would have an even more disturbing effect if her face wore a more distressed expression..
Prostate sunrise- Nice work.. looks real dark and brooding.. The only thing is I would want to see like a whole sea of her "children behind her" . . Like a dark army... other than that.. great.
flaptraps vs Chaotic Logik- props on those..
Not enough time right now to comment on the great entries so far... but this was alot of fun and I will be more prepared next time! See you at the workshop all!

just the US. but I'm thinking...they're getting an Easter Europe TD going in the lounge. We could get the rest of the US involved, and the UK could get another portion of the world active...and then after that, we could do

Wazzit? I dunno nuttin bout no eat dookie.
Actually, I was reviewing some Dave McKean works and thought of Tarot cards and then went online and researched a tarot card that would best emulate what my creepy child was doing/expressing. There is one guy's work that I have on my desktop screen and I wish I knew who it was. Here's a link to the work I am talking about: Five of Pentacles (http://www.cognitionstudio/conceptart/fiveofpent_cc2.jpg) . The work is so damn slick and I want to see more works. Anyone think they can help?
Peace!

I've been mulling over an East vs West thunderdome next...
ha! that would be a pretty cool idea, but...do we have enough people on the east side? O_o maybe we could do like, America vs the rest of the world...hrmmm maybe that would be too weird though.

very similar. ona random note the 3d one resembles an owl. Im sure that is what that artist was going for.

You know what though, I bet if you looked, you could find any number of pictures that look a lot like this. They're not simillar enough to say that it's copied or anything, just simillar enough to say it's not very unique. But C'mon, "fat creepy business man wants to rule the world" how the hell would YOU paint him? Probably just like that. So don't even worry about it.
Schlo-mo, you seem to like the idea of exposing someone as a fraud... No offence to you man, but bringing up the eat-poo thing, now this... let it go. We're all learning, and things sneak into our subconscious all the time, there's nothing to do for it. It's not using someone else's art, it's not painting over someone else's art, so who cares? Just breeeeeeathe... be content :ninja++: <<< Be a Zen master and just let it all go :confident

I have to agree with Phuzion on this...even if it's a copy...the painting is still very good....my only thought about it not being 'fair' or whatever is that 'the idea' of a businessman...'the concept' of it comes a lot from the 3d image. IF it was taken from that....then the painting should be judged as a 'painting' and not as a 'concept'....if you see what I mean. If you ask me, an equal part should be paid to both the quality of the art and the quality of the 'concept' behind the art. So if a lot of that concept comes from another piece of art...well then I can understand why something like this could be an issue...
All in all though...it's still a great painting.
BTW, Phuzion...nice work....checked out your sketches too...very nice.

looks like Schlo-mo deleted his post?? I just want to throw my oppinion in here.. cause other people were dogging on schlo-mo... the piece looked like a copy to me. Even the highlights were in the same spot. I spent 10-15 hrs doing research and design sketches for my T-dome piece. I would expect others competing to ALSO do some type of "conceptual" work for their piece. Isnt that what this forum is for? Also if it was just a study or practice painting then yeah cool post it. But NOT for a comp... Anywhoo not wanting to ruffle anyones feathers but I think schlo-mo was doing the right thing.

I agree with you guys if it is a copy and it's too bad if it is, I actually like otis's version better and if it's a take off I think he enhanced it.
I think it's between Otis and Oregano and the judges and I haven't heard any of them comment on it yet so let's just wait and see.
There's a lot of great stuff happening in this competion we could be focusing on instead and I'd rather not see this overshadow that stuff. :bashful: :)

Wowzers...there's really no disputing that, huh? Obviously, the 3D pic was used as a reference. I don't know if I'd get overly worked up about it though. Otis's painting is still excellent, and he altered the design and made it somewhat his own. Clearly this won't fly in the future though. I can relate to being overly reliant on photo references, but this just seems too close to not attribute credit where credit is due.

Well... I guess Otis will have to at least say something in his defence... But I still think his worst crime is unoriginality. ANYWAY!! JUDGING!!
How long are we postponing this for? Just curious. Also, who are we Cali guys battling next? Or are we going West vs. East? No harm in organizing it now right? :bashful:
I just need an excuse to draw outside of work... or at least a theme. Also I was thinking it might be fun to do it kinda traditional Thunder Dome style with one theme... though I'm not sure how it would work with teams. just my 2 cents their sticking up for schlo-mo... hope we have many more AWESOME Thunderdomes!
As the Thunderdome King, let me throw in my 2 cents. The purpose of the 2 thunderdomes I have organized is as follows, in order of importance:
1-motivate people to push themselves further, in new directions, and harder then they have before.
2-motivate people to do a piece of art that is of portfolio quality.
3-see 1 and 2.
Honestly, I don't care if the piece in question (or any pieces ever or going to be turned in) are copied, traced, or whatever. The contest is secondary, and a means to an end. If artists are "cheating" on thier submissions, really, they are cheating themselves. These are all about working hard, having fun, and doing some quality art. If you're not doing that...you're the one who loses regardless of the score.
Interesting how you all have condemned otis before he's even said anything in his own defense. I've sent him a PM on the subject several days ago after getting several PMs about it myself. I'll let him tell it in his own words, but he basically said he just painted what he thought fit the subject.
You guys should take alot more care before trying to sully somebodys good name...but the point is; Doesn't matter. 1) you can't prove it. 2) the contest is just for fun anyhow. 3) his match is only worth 1 point, so nobody can screw the overall results very much. 4) otis is the real loser here, regardless of wether he did anything wrong or not. he shouldn't use his piece as a portfolio piece now even if it was a totally original idea that just came out the same. not to mention, he's got a tarnished reputation from something that is impossible for any of you to prove. When does something become too similar? I don't disagree they look very similar...but the only person he can really hurt is himself, and why would a professional do something like that? His avatar is badass, so is the work on his site...why would he copy people?
If you prove to be a bad dancer, you're left on the side when the next song comes around.
I hope you guys can all just chill and draw harder next time.
and schlo-mo; back up, dude. I don't know if you were inferring redehlert was copying or whatever (things don't always come across right on the net), but I know this dude and he puts alot of effort into his work (and he's a damn nice guy, to boot). Either way, be careful what you type when people could infer you are talking shit.

I deleted the posts to stop this, which has resulted in a alternate effect.
I didnt accuse him of copying tracing or anything of the like, I just asked if it was done for the eatpoo tarot contest.. which it probably wasnt - No harm, or malice intended.

Wow!!
I stopped for 5 min. and stared in awe at the mother's love theme. Both entries are disturbing and depict an unconditional abandon and desperation that a mother can express when dealing with her children..... you two really impressed me with this one...the interpretation of the theme is very powerfull, nevermind the technique ( I cried damn you...like a sissy).
And I was wondering, while reading this "copycat" topic posted here.
Aren't some of you guys concept artists for 3D works and similar designs ??
I just think that everybody was reaally quick with their triggerfinger and never wondered if the chicken came before the egg...get it ??
I don't know what the real situation is but I appreciate Jetpack's mature grasp of the issue and I'm looking forward to future TD's

Hey Schlo-mo - Thank you for clarifying, friend. I would love to see the tarot cards on eatpoo's site. Would you be able to locate that link for me? I have never done tarot cards before and they simply intrigue me. And thank you for respecting my work...
JP42 - Thanks for your comment, as well. And my apologies for jumping the gun on seeing way too much similarity between the 2 works.
It's true, you only cheat yourself if you do 'original' work that was actually a copy of someone's work. It comes back to haunt you.
I'm pretty tough on this as a medical illustrator. I'm constantly aware of copyright infringement and copycats based on time in this field and this story here: I did a piece in grad school and was pulled aside by a vehement instructor re: plagiarism. He asked me if I had ever heard of a particular illustrator and when I said "No, why?" he openly accussed me of copying this artist's work verbatim. When shown the work, I was in awe. He had every right to challenge me, but I had neither heard of the artist nor seen the work before. He obviously registered my awe as genuine and chalked it up to coincidence, grunted an apology for ripping my head off and shitting down my neck and said okay. From then on, I have a heightened sense of awareness of fellow medical illustrators and protecting my intellectual property as well as not getting shat on again. Long story. :bashful:
Cheers!

First off, in reference to redehlert's post, I did see what you said. I told you, everything doesn't come across on the net, and I felt the implication was that Dave was taking ideas from eatpoo or whatever. You say you didn't mean any harm, so it's cool then, just got lost in translation.
A couple professionals PMed me about the coincidence (of otis' work) on the first day the thread was posted. THAT is the right way to go about things. Either that, or PM otis himself if you've got a question. Posting that shit in here (and also, the way you posted it) just causes everyone to go bananas with a mob mentality of stringing him up a tree before he's even said anything in his own defense. I hardly see how bringing this up in a public forum is showing the respect for the artist you claim to have. How am I riling it all up?
Did you think for a moment to look at things from my side? I spend many hours organizing, PMing, updating, compiling, and posting all of this stuff to make things run smoothly. I want lots of people to participate, draw better, and have a good time. I don't want to be responsible for doing detective work on people's pieces, accusing people, disqualifying people or anything like that because it's MISSING THE POINT ANYWAYS. (Feel free to re-read my previous post on what the point of thunderdomes is; why I organize them).
If anybody has anything to say, you can PM otis. Hopefully he'll stop on in and give his side of the story to resolve this issue that shouldn't have come up in the first place.
Did I mention that bringing this up in the thread adds alot of negative attention to a perticular piece(s) and takes away alot of positive attention that should be going to the other 30+ entries?
If anybody has any issues further about this, or any other thunderdome in the future, please PM myself, the organizers, or the artists involved.
I'd like to apologize to both otis and oregano, this situation isn't fair for either of them.
by the way, did everyone miss the 35 or so awesome pieces of artwork at the beginning of this post?

Congratulations to Sok, Dougbot, eliWolff, Alger Langdon, nova, myself, nardfrog, Michael78, stephen, flaptraps, el coro, teyekanik, David York, and Ben Mauro for winning thier matches.

And now for some comments from the judges.
gaboartpage:
"Best works
1) 10B i love this one!!!
very phantasmagoric
good focal point and detail
. . great atmosphere and composition
for some may look simplistic but
for me is elegant doesnt need to be all detailed
the face rendering is genious very cool piece
and it goes with the frightening/evil/scary/type of illustration
all the way congratulations to the artist
for making the best work
2) 12B I guess that its very contrasted renderings
give this piece a top look
in compo i think almost nothing is left to luck
. . everything is planned and has
a smart delivery of elements
the "belt of the mother" is the best part
amazing contrast shape and style far side is delicious
how with just a thin bright value line
can give so much visual information
my only complain is the hair stripes
i just dont see them fit and the jaw mouth area
of the mother maybe its style but i think
more jaw or chin would have helped to
give a more sober and elegant look to her
creatures and focal point is just sooo clever
very cool congratulations
3) 12A ok . . . where to start? the fact
that this is traditionally made gives an extra
prize to this one, the hues variations in skin
are the best part in this work very subtle
and armonious delivering so many characters
keeping balance tension and reinforcing theme
is simply amazing
skin and flesh management depicting twists
pulls and pushes shows a great visual knowledge
all the kids around her head are my favorites
and the one cuddle in her arm is the best
specially i like his cheek
congratulations
And to the ones who didnt sended
the works well disqualified, if top
pro artists with tight schedules can delivey
their entries in time then others should
do it too, dont compromise to something
you cant do, this talks bad in two ways
first irresponsability and two lack of
control in personal schedule ah yes and
disrespect to your thunderdome parthner
overall this is great thunderdome
good topics and good competition
and friendly atmosphere including
the curse words hehe"

"here are my best 3:
1st:
El Coro - mothers love
Nice execution. A disturbing picture. But it brought my attention a lot more than an of the other submissions, I just had to give it a second and a third look. And it fits the topic well I guess...
2nd:
dougbot - A prospector on a distant asteroid
The picture looks good. But what made my interest is that I can look at the picture and start imagining a deeper story. Cool idea.
3rd:
Phuzion - 3 characters.
The topic is rather dull imo. Not very imaginative. But, characters are nice. Good concepts and well drawn. So as character designs, I think these are nicely done...and they have character.
A lot of other nice pictures as well. But I had a hard time picking out favorites after these."

"my favorite five images:
1 - 10b
2 - 12a
3 - 5b
4 - 11b
5 - 16a"

Sok wins: It's clear that Sok has putten most effort into this. Good layout.
...
Dougbot vs Inspector Lee "A prospector on a distant asteroid."
Dougbot wins: Both submissios were very nice. But personally I prefer dougbots, it has a nice rendering quality and the picture tells a story very well.
...
eliWolff vs LadyLioness "Robotic Horse"
eliwolff wins: Both horses had a pretty much same rendering detail. But as a character design looks more tought through and the functionality of the horse looks more believable.
...
Redehlert vs Alger Langdon "Create a creepy child. The creepier the better."
alger langdon wins: Better composition and the character and motif is more original. The picture tells a story in a nice way.
...
nova vs Groover Mcnab "self-portrait"
nova wins: this was a close call, hard to select a winner. But, nova's picture has a more interessting execution and work well as a straight facial portrait.
...
jetpack42 vs Grinn "midievil cowboy"
jetpack42 wins: hard to choose a winner. Grinns picture had a nice graphic look with nice colors. But, all in all, jetpack42 had a better thought through design and the pen technique makes the picture stand out.
...
nardfrog vs phil holland "demonic biomechianical humans"
nardfrog wins: For me the topic was a bit too cliché, I would have hoped for something more originality within the topic. But, nardfrogs picture is more "eyecatching" because of the picture as a whole, more contrast and action. As a character design, I could not pick a winner.
...
Michael78 vs Sinix "Near-future driver/pilot (for a racing vehicle) [in pen and/or pencil]"
Michael78 wins: More design of costume and the drawing seems more appropriate according to the topic.
...
Bojee vs stephen "a frightening/evil/scary/type of illustration"
stephen wins: better execution and depth to the picture. Topic in itself was very vague and rather "dull" so I have to choose a winner according to the illustration as a picture.
...
flaptraps vs Chaotic Logik "radio controlled machine flesh"
Chaotic Logik wins: Both nice illustrations, but chaotic logic illustrates the topic better and the illustration has an interessting technique.
...
prostate sunrise vs el coro "a mothers love"
el coro wins: Nice execution on both, but el coro's picture has a very nice illustative look and the motif is very interesting. The picture really catches ones attention.
...
Stokes vs teyenkanik "Double Dragon"
teyenkanik wins: nice composition and a nice way to renew the classic double dragon characters to look cool in the year 2004.
...
silverslash vs i.was.ink "Primitive figure with advanced technology"
i.was.ink wins: well hard to compare with no opponent
...
David York vs Dished "Centaur Warrior" ?
David York wins: The picture is better executed.
...
Undertow vs Phuzion "Sniper (male), Spy (female), Thief (Non-human)"
phuzion wins: Well still impossible to judge with no opponent. But I want to mention that regarding the pretty dull topic the execution is very nice. Great character designs and very cool attitude on all 3 characters.
...
Sapphire vs mos667 "Prehistoric VS Futuristic"
sapphire wins: again only one opponent so winner comes automaticly.
...
Ben Mauro vs dns2k 'ancient or futuristic human/machine hybrid in everyday scenario'
ben mauro wins: For me this picture has more appeal. It tells a story and the sketchy pen style works well. I think both submissions would have better with a more thought through cropping for the composition"
Im very pleased with all the work turned in, All of your participation makes this possible. After Oct 23rd we'll be ramping up the Thunderdome machine again, most likely in a battle of East vs West, so stay tuned! Until then, the powers that be at CA are starting up Thunderdome 8. Get cookin!

I don't see the Oregano vs. Otis contest mentioned anywhere...was that matchup not judged? (Not to try to stir more controversy over this topic, I'm just wondering who won it.)
BTW: Big congrats to Seattle on the win, and a general round of applause for all who participated! :cheerleader: :cheerleader:

September 28th, 2004, 12:29 AM
The results will not be listed, and the match won't count due to a) controversy around otis' piece, and b) it doesn't affect the total outcome anyhow. It's a shame Oregano's efforts are being underscored like this. Let's focus on the rest of the art.
End of Story.

I think Oregano and Otis both came up with fine pieces for the competition, and that's the whole point anyway, right? to motivate ppl to produce some great art? So sorry your contest wasn't judged guys, but congrats to you both for participating, and keep up the good work.

Yeah that was awesome! Thanks JP and judges for your time and effort. Sinix thanks for stoking my flame with a very difficult challenge. I was a little worried my piece was going to look weak so I pushed myself and turned out some of my best work so far. I look forward to the next one!

I really appreciated the professionals taking their time out of their busy schedule to judge our pieces, I mean we could of gotten anyone to judge, but it we wouldn't get the insight of why a certain piece won more than the other....good job on Jetpack's part of arranging all this, he made it happen, and I can't stop giving him props, you deserve it man, oh can I have your first born.

Jetpack: You will forever dance the macarena in my mind. That's a good thing, trust me
Judges: You guys rock! Thanks for the effort you put into this.
I do feel a little cheated though, just cause someone didn't post their images... I don't want to name names cause it might be couchUNDERTOWcough. great works from everyone, i feel honored to be asked to judge again
sorry i never got around to putting up my responses to the last thunderdome... wanted to make sure i would this time
match 1- i didnt know about the whole controversy when i judged. that said, i thought these two were both great and i had a hard time picking a winner.. i eventually decided on otis', due to his depiction of the topic.. but these are both really great and its more of a tie in my book
match 2- nice job guys, but i had to give this one to Sok, he defintiely showed a great deal of dedication in his entry and just an overall more complete image. keep studying that anatomy guys!
match 3- wow these are both really nice... I chose Dougbots for his concept and excellent execution. i like where inspector lee is going with this though... a bit monochromatic, but a great start. dougbot, this is one of the nicest images ive seen you do. i picked your image in the last battle too... great stuff. nice lighting...one of the only things i can say though is that it would be nice to see a more developed face on the old man...it reads as a little flat and comic book-y compared to the rest of the image
match 4- this was interesting to see... two different people coming up with almost the exact same pose for the horse! theyre both pretty nice, i ended up going with eliwolff though, the robotics seem more thought out and functional... also the rendering is clearer and the forms read nicely. keep it up both of you
match 5- this is another one with two really great images. i like the texture and color going on in redehlerts, but i went with AlgerLangdons... i really like the originality and composition of Algers... really nice and just feels a little creepier. great job both of you guys though
match 6- this one was the closest for me. i didnt know which to pick, theyre both great and i like both for very different reasons. groovers creativity... novas haunting stare. i ended up choosing groovers after switching back and forth. i just really like the mechanical selfportrait on the end of the robotic contraption.
match 7- these are both really cool too. i like the graphical elements of grinns, but i chose jetpacks as the winner. jetpacks concept reads more clearly and i dig the inking... could be cleaned up a little bit though... maybe think of other ways to do the background than just flat black with a halo of white around the figures. its always good to think about the negative space of an image while youre working on it.
match 8- these both turned out nice, i chose nardfrogs though in the end... i liked the concept a little more and the execution was done quite nicely. phils looks like a nice start to a piece, but i think parts of it could use some more work and the value could be punched a bit more..
match 9- good concepts guys, i went with michael 78s due to showing the thought process of the design of the suit and its functionality. sinix's ink drawing is done very well though... keep it up guys
match 10- i looove stephens painting. probably my favorite of this thunderdome. a great example of perfect use of different temperatures of black. great hands and face. for some reason though it feels like the canvas should be slightly longer at the bottom... to give the composition just a little more vertical thrust. bojees got a nice start here... the guy in the door with his shadow provides a nice graphical element. i think the girl in the forgroung could use a bit more work and study. man, nicely done stephen..
match 11- heres another i thought was really close... i went with flagtraps though...i felt the composition worked nicely and i really like the movement of the robot...he feels like hes powering up and waking. chaoticlogiks concept for the machineflesh robot is really cool though and i like that aspect alot. the running girl doesnt really work for me though.
match 12- mannn these are both awesome. thats all i can say. i went with el coros, for the amazing use of traditional materials and the elaborate composition and configuration of all the bodies. prostat sunrise- this is probably the best image ive seen from you yet, its looking really nice. i do think the anatomy of the mother feels a little weird and could use some work. parts seem a little too thin, i know thats what youre going for, but it doesnt help establish the ability for her to hold that giant thing on her head upright heheh. also keep working on those human faces
match 13- cool entries from both... i went with stokes due to the more elaborate pose and nice rendering. hehe nice inclusion of the old screen shot too. teyekaniks is nicely composed, i think with a little more work it could be really nice. maybe some work on the background? or more variety of color and value in the characters..
match 14- pretty nice drawing iwasink, keeping going.. push that value and keep trying to think creatively the octopus arm is interesting and it could be cool to see that idea pushed further
match 15- keep going guys, its good too see you both pushing yourselves.. i had to go with David Yorks for this match, it just looks like you really put alot of time into it and you definitely tackled a really difficult scene to illustrate. hope both of you keep studying and working at it
match 16- awesome image Phuzion, great characters, they look like the walked right out of an epic animated movie
match 17- heh i like sapphires image alot, very funny and done well too, so i had to go with it for this match. would be cool to see you tackle this one again in color! mos667's realy just looks like the start of an image so its hard to crit...just keep working at it
match 18- i like the topic.. i chose Bens for this match, i found the subject matter to be a little more interesting and even a little thought provoking... robots buying fruit... i would suggest that next time you might want to try doing a bunch of thumbails first and try to come up with a really interesting or dynamic compostion first...itll help in the end. same thing with dns2k's... this could be really awesme if you pushed that perspective alot so that the audiences point of view was from the position of one of those pool balls! also think about your rendering a bit more... the hatching is there, but its not really serving any purpose, its not really showing the shape of those forms or showing how light is laying across the forms.
again, great job to all, and its really nice to see so many people putting forth the dedication to this...
thanks,
wes
