View Full Version : What do you listen to while creating art?

Brutillus
June 17th, 2004, 01:03 AM
what I love about drawing is that once I map out the basic structure and design of the drawing in my mind I can listen to all kinds of stuff, while drawing, and fully appreciate what I'm listening to. I like NPR, my audiobook collection (the contents of which I've listened to so many times I've virtually memorized each one and can lip-sync the words...), and I find Rammstein particularly inspiring when I want to do something badass.
do other people share this habit? if so what do you listen to while creating art?

~3000 songs on my playlist at the moment.

Recently, I've been playing Comedy Central Presents and Celebrity Jeopardy videos in the background. It's nice a break from music and it keeps my brain active. :D

I like the courses from the Teaching Company (http://www.teach12.com). When I'm working full out I can burn through even the longest ones in a few days. They're expensive, but most big library systems have them.

I grew up on urban music, I use to listen to rap alot in high school, but it's all about R&B now. I listen/sing to Ginuwine, Usher, Mario Winans, Craig David, Babyface, some new, some old schools while I'm paper jammin' my artwork. Sometimes a lyric comes up to where I have to drop my pencil just to hit a perfect note on some of the songs.
I also listen to tracks that has a phat beat.

well.. currently i have like 5000 songs more or less in my comp... mostly metal and the "hard" genres... but i listen to mostly anything. Currently listening to Devil Doll - Dies Irae.

At school and school workshops they mostly put classical stuff.. or soft new age music. They get pissed if i try to put something harder than that :D

For quick sketching i usually listen to:

NOFX
Rancid
Misfits
Toy dolls
Soad
Korn
Millencolin
Green Day
Descendents
Dead Kennedys
Ramones
Sex Pistols

..and lots of more punk and hardcore.. the list could go on forever, and i`d be boring you.

For more refined sketches i listen to:

Children of bodom
Cradle of filth
Rhapsody
Luca Turilli
Opeth
Napalm death
Slayer
Finntroll
Dimmu Borgir
Stratovarius
Sentenced
Old man`s child
Wintersorg
Sonata arctica
Phoenix Rizing'

Again, the list could go on and on. Different styles of metal, and bands you probably never heard of..

For painting and pieces that i spend (or plan to spend) long hours on, i listen to:

Vivaldi
Bethoven
Mozart
Allegri
Grieg
Chopin
Excrementory Grindfuckers

And lotsa other classical pieces, sometimes even movie soundtracks. (think howard shore.)

i also kinda like Thirstin howl the third, i dunno why. I don`t care much for hiphop and i cannot relate to his lyrics at ALL. Yet there`s something about him that sounds cool.

//edit: i misspelled opeth. i am TEH suck.

I can sympathize with the abilty to listen to whatever after a general idea is laid out. I like to listen to really powerful music (Genre usually depends on the mood I happen to be in that day or night) initially to get me excited and moved to work on a piece. Much in the same way that gestures loosen me up for a longer session. Filling a page with ideas gets a lot of issues out of the way so I can get into a piece- especially if it's one that is giving me problems and I find myself wanting to scrap it. Really loud booming, hard driving, gets-the-blood-pumping music. Once I am into the flow of a piece and I am working out the details pretty much anything will do.

for drawing, i only listen to extreme inspiration music, you know, stuff like in the training montages from ROCKY and movies like that.

Stan Bush. such classics as "(You've Got) The Touch", "Dare", and "Never Surrender"
Journey. cant go wrong with "Separate Ways" and "Midnight Train"
Joe Esposito. the heart of the karate kid with "Youre The Best"
Survivor. great contributions to the karate kid and the rocky series with "Moment of Truth", "Burning Heart", and "Eye of The Tiger"
Vince DiCola. ultimate keyboardist. contributed to the musical score of the ROCKY series and TRANSFORMERS the movie
Bill Conti. ultimate musical composer. ROCKY series, The KARATE KID series

Late at night I listen to WDET online (http://www.wdetfm.org/), the National Public Radio affiliate here in the Detroit area. They'll play just about anything and everything from Prodigy to Joni Mitchell within a span of an hour. It's seriously funky & eclectic.

I even turn it on when I teach class and let the students groove to it during the day. WDET plays some pretty cool fun stuff as well as being very knowledgable about all sorts of music.

ye he he!... there's a nice mix of toons there!!!... I sometimes find that, when I listen to songs. id est... music with lyrics... the lyrics sometimes distract me, becoming over-influential to my art... but music on it's own is ok!!!... it's even better when I find something which appropriately fitting to the subject at hand!!!... but sometimes I find it easier to paint with absolutely no distractions whatsoever!!!.... ... ... .. .. .. . . . if that makes any sense!!..

I don't listen to music when I draw. But sometimes in the middle of the night it gets too quiet so I gotta turn on something.

But usually I listen to the hum of my computer when I draw. Its this small little barebone system that makes a lot of noise with its 4800rpm main fan. :bashful: My landlord had asked me twice where that noise was coming from.

Lots of...

Death Cab, Atmosphere, Azure Ray, Beloved. I've really been into a lot of indy, tons of Elliot Smith, Bright Eyes. Deftones, Modest Mouse, Pedro The Lion, Sparta, Team Sleep, Trail of Dead, Defiance Ohio... Trail of Dead, Built to Spill, Outkast, and uhh... :cough: Justin Timberlake.

Be Quiet and Drive on repeat as well as Title and Registration. Listen to them. If anyone knows of any good indy suggestions... take your shirt off and wave it like a helicopter.

Music suggestion. Seems like we have somewhat similar tastes, minus the, uh, justin timberlake, heh. But anyway, check out a band called "Minus the Bear." A friend turned me on to them a little over a year ago, and I really got into them for a while. "What I know about being Gigantic", and "Highly Refined Pirates" are both really good albums.

if there is one thing i have found in any open discussion, music inspires the most people and draws the largest lines of devide between civil people and has them remain so (civil that is). In my mind there is nothing better to be around while drawing than music. I listen to lots, here is my list.

At the Drive In
Tricky
Q and not U
The Mars Volta
mewithoutYou (they are a christian band, but they are still really hard (I am not christian (that usually brings around interesting conversation as well)))
Les Savy Fav
Atoms Family
Cannibal Ox
The Cenobites (kick ass kool keith)
MC Paul Barman (Really hilarious, but not so great musically)
Nation of Ulysses
North of America
National Acrobat (that was the "N" section)
Dillinger Escape Plan
Converge
Darkest Hour
Death from Above 1979
The Constantines

But above all else, is FRANK ZAPPA!

anyway, thats who inspires me.

Whoa... I just listen to a tripped up mix of stuff. Jpop, rock, alternative, trance, anime/game OSTs... it's a huge jumble. People complain that they can't find anything in my music folders because I don't organize them. The reason I can't organize them is that they can't really be organized into any subdirs. XP

wow, this thread got dug up from loooooong ago.

Normally I listen to audiobooks while I work because it makes the day go by so much faster... plus I'm able to read the books I don't have time to when I'm off work. But I do need to split up my books with some music, so this is what I'm currently listening to:

A Perfect Circle
Audioslave
Beck

Oasis
Radiohead

In the past I thought I had borderline OCD, this new Mike Patton album

has confirmed it. Some days I listen to it over and over again. If you scroll down, there's little .wav samples on the page.

Maybe there's a support group out there.

I'm somewhat strange when it comes to music. I'll listen to a piece just because I'm enthralled by two notes, even if I hate the rest of the piece. So, yeahm, most of these are pretty recent...

John Williams, and then specifically Duel of the Fates.
Hans Zimmer - Black Hawk Down soundtrack.
Harry Gregson-Williams - Metal Gear Solid 1/2 Main Theme
Assorted videogame collection - Halo, Final Fantasy, Devil May Cry and Zone of the Enders 2.
Some Nightwish stuff.

And anything that strikes me as interesting. :)

i find that the flow and structure of jazz best inspires me. its also very calming and "feel good".

any good jazz musician/composer is on my list (George Gershwin, Al Hirt, Dizzy Gillespi, Maynard Ferguson, Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, heck even Ella Fitzgerald!), but id have to say my all time fave is James Morrison - have listened to his stuff going on 6 or 7 years and havent ever looked back.

i also like world music and have found that Tuvan throat singing is quite serene and great to work to. Nitin Sawhney is an amazing composer and has quite a few inspiring tracks out there.

a while back i was completely obsessed with the hardcore/metalcore scene and so listened to a lot of Killchoir Project, I Killed The Prom Queen, Embodiment 12:14, Poison The Well, Zao, and Underoath (earlier stuff). these days ill listen to them when im in the mood, but id sooner opt for the more melodious scream-o sounds of Taking Back Sunday, Underoath's latest stuff and of course Kids In The Way.

im a huge fan of ska (the trumpet is a dead giveaway) and so in an upbeat mood ill play anything from Five Iron Frenzy, the OC Supertones, the Insyderz, the W's, the Hippo's, Crowned King, Bagster, 7x10 Split, the Frugals, etc etc etc.

but, mostly i have modern Praise and Worship playing in my discman. stuff from the australian-born movement Planet Shakers, Hillsong United and basically anything worship oriented, eg. some tracks from Newsboys, Relient K, Seraphs Coal, Ace Troubleshooter, Earthsuit and an assortment of others. calming, uplifting, inspiring. i get a lot outta this.

wow that was long haha. good to see a vast mix of musical interests here.

I love the Boards of Canada - very underrated. gotta go pick that album up now.

also really diggin' the new Four Tet album -everything ecstatic

Recently I've been mainly listening to Elbow's entire back catalogue, the new album is particularly good.
In between that, I've thrown in some Biffy Clyro, Opeth (new album Ghost Reveries is very, very good), and Paco de Lucia.
Bit of Trivium and Sufjan Stevens now and then, too.
Fairly eclectic mix!

Loomer,

A lot of people on music forums I have been reading have said stuff like "Oh this is no Music has The Right To Children", or "This is no Maxima!" and they say they are disappointed in it. I think this is pathetic. These are the kinds of people who go watch Speed and Speed 2 for it's familiarity. MHTRTC is what it is, and will always be legendary. The last thing I want is a rehash of the same old stuff that I hold in high regard anyway. if I want MHTRTC I will go listen to it. BoC is the type of music you NEVER get bored of, no matter how many times you listen. And everytime you find something new in their music.

If you want to take the album title literally "The Campfire Headphase", you would have a pretty good idea of what to expect. This album has a lot of guitar in it but is very subtle in it's inclusion. Think back to what it feels like to stare into a campfire during sunset on a mild summer night at some beach location and you will agree when you finally listen to it. That's how I feel anyway. This is the general "theme" running throughout the album. The track Chromakey Dreamcoat is my fav at the moment, opens with a little guitar riff that runs throughout the song, overlayed by synth, beats and distorted field recordings....beautiful. Then you have Dayvan Cowboy which sorta sounds like it will be snapped up by a car commercial or some product that requires an inspirational feel to market it. This album has a very organic outdoors feel. Your thoughts while listening blur into flickering Super 8 footage.

This new album also has their trademark analog syth cognitive rewind sentimentality. It is quite simply fucking awesome, but please do not expect it to be "better" than other albums. It is DIFFERENT, but no less worthy. I think it compliments their other albums beautifully.

Cheers

There are a few of us here at MB that listen to BoC all day long.
You will find no other group that can capture the same atmosphere as Boards of Canada has been able to create. Truly the artists music.

You should all go out and buy their new album when it comes out on the 17th.
I've heard it, and it is certain to bring tears to you eyes. Trust me.

do other people share this habit? if so what do you listen to while creating art?

When I begin a drawing, I listen to the silence all around me if I can. When I'm in that spot where I can listen to other things and still draw, I basically listen to just about anything from The Steve Miller Band to Beethoven to Journey to the Beatles.

It just depends upon what mood I'm in at the time. :)

Usually Russian classical music when coming up with scenery, a mix of classic rock when figure drawing. Though often it depends what I'm working on. I've worked to Bluegrass, Weird Al, Disney Soundtracks, old classic movie soundtracks, country, classical,

...and then theres what I've labeled on iTunes as "nerd stuff/whatever." its a playlist consisting of these songs:

-Battle without Honor or Humanity: (I cant read the kanji name for the artist, but it was in Kill Bill)
-Korobeiniki (the Russian folk song which the tetris theme was based on)
-Mai Ai Hee(Dragonsta Din Tei): O-Zone
-DotA: Basshunter
-Ich bin dein Gummi Bear: Gummi Bear
-I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing: the New Seekers
-Blue: Eiffel 65
-Smash Bros. Great Medley (orchestra versin): directed by Taizo Takemoto, originally from nintendo soundtracks.
-Space Oddity: David Bowie
-99 Luftballons: Nena
-Ballod of Bilbo Baggins: Leanard Nemoy
-I'm so Ronery: Team America

I can only listen to slow music, preferably instrumental. Although I'm a huge rock fan, it tends to distract me while drawing. But these are some of my faves atm:

Loreena McKennitt (her newest album, An ancient muse, is good! But so is all her stuff)
E.S.Posthumos (esp.Cartographer, second CD)
Chopin (mostly the nocturnes, some waltzes)
Radiohead's newer stuff (love the old, but too loud to listen to while drawing :D)

Then there are just tons of soundtracks, like from The Fountain, Truman Show, Howl's Moving Castle, Oldboy, random movie themes etc. Music and art is the greatest combo!
