So the first idea me and Sushy came up with is a little civilization on the moon with a bit of a middle-eastern aesthetic :) the middle east can look barren in some places but there are splashes of color in the cities, I'm thinking of the same thing here. A small village of relatively simple huts, but built together so that it looks like a more complex hive of sorts.
If we do this I think it's important to have a mood about the city that feels very foreign and distant, with unique architecture (the frazetta painting that i cropped is a good example). the moon people are very secretive so it might even look empty at first glance, but you can see the inhabitants in the shadows (who are probably alien, but still humanoid form).
I'll post a mood board too :)

Of course this is just my first idea and we don't have to do that but it's an idea to get us started :D

Super pictures Sushy. I love the one with the two boats.
I like the idea of religion in the future. I dont believe this crap about the future being a secular sciency utopia at all. Im sure there wil be Jews and Muslims in 5000 years, although probably in rather different forms than today.
I also like the idea of a desert culture adapting to extraterrestrail deserts; I am a massive Dune fan, and I like arabic and persian cultures in general.
I can imagine that religious sects might be persecuted in the future, as they have been trhoughout history, which might make people cagy and defensive.
And living on the moon will have interesting effects on the body that might require biotechnological solutions; think the lower gravity and hard radiation.. perhaps as humanity spreads out into space it splits into many breeds (think dalmations, alsations, great danes and chihuahas)
Check out the Allhambra in Granada, for fascinating ways to make a desert into a paradise.
I can imagine with some relatively simple tech you could make concrete and glass from lunar regolith (surface pebbles grit and dust) and bake other useful resources out of the surface too.
But lunar gravity might also allow amazing architecture, or human-powered flight within large domes, or gigantic trees, or...

Oh i meant to add this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pak_Protector
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protector_(novel)
" Pak Protector
A species called Pak lives on a planet near the Milky Way core. The species has three main stages of development: Child, Breeder, Protector. A Pak is born, and matures into a Breeder, at which point he and she may bear children. Breeders are not particularly intelligent. Around 40 years of age, the root of the Tree-of-Life plant begins to smell delicious to all Breeders, and they eat it and metamorphose into the Protector stage via a virus that lives in the plant. A Protector's joints expand to give his muscles a greater moment arm, his skin wrinkles into a tough armor, and his nails turn into retractile claws. A second heart develops near the groin, the mouth fuses into a beak, and all sexual characteristics disappear. The most important change is that the brain expands, giving a Protector a tremendous intellect. A Protector has no motivation other than the preservation of his bloodline, and to that end the Pak homeworld is never free from war, since all Protectors are constantly trying to ensure their progeny's survival at the expense of everyone else. If a Protector has no children left, he no longer feels the urge to eat and dies unless he can adopt the entire Pak race and work towards their benefit."
The geography of the Protector world is dominated by circular lakes...
from where protectors of one family have launched nuclear attacks on another...

Is the theme that weird? It is pretty straight-forward I think :D
Hmmz can we just make them breathe argon? XD
OK I just did some quick random sketches.
Just to get started xD

Hi
Back to the computer. Nice costume Suhy . I done some doodles to.
Red an article about the climate at the moon. Seem to be a very tuff place to live on. Over 100 degrease C daytime and under -100 at night. But the moon day is 14 earth days so perhaps there is periods in-between when the temperature is tolerable. I don't know about the pressure but I think we need pressure suits.
Velocity Kendall
July 24th, 2012, 07:52 PM
those are gorgeous.
there is no pressure on the moon, it is not massive enough to capture any atmosphere.
in direct sunlight the temperature is several hundred degrees C, in shade it drops to a few degrees above Absolute Zero. so you need to protect biological people somehow.
OK so in the spec it says that the main character is a guardian, and that its "His/her duty is to protect it from an imminent harm." I wonder what the threat might be to our moon muslims..

bit more space mecca .. pretty silly. i doubt theres a way to use the kaaba that doesnt annoy people or seem like a wierd racist cartoon, or its making some off colour political statement about radical islam or the war on terror or something, which is a shame cos it looks so fucking cool.
ill try some other ideas..
i remember reading this amazing story where in the future the three abrahamic religions are beleaguered in a almost completely secular society, and buy a colony world between them to make a place where they can worship in peace.
they make amazing living cities to house their people, but the cities stick to the letter of doctrine, and when they decide the people are sinning or somethng, kick them out into the waste.
this all happened like a thousand years ago and people barely remember why the cities judged them and exiled them, only that they did, and that they are unworthy in the eyes of God. this has drastic effects on the human society. the idea of dogmatic machines is a cool one i think.
cool story, though i probably remembered it wrong, here it is if youre interested: http://www.amazon.com/Strength-Stones-Greg-Bear/dp/0743452631
spelled mecca wrong didnt i, d'oi
JanJager
July 26th, 2012, 08:42 PM
That is very nice Velocity. I agree with you we should not make some political statement perhaps just use the cool design elements. i think that it could be a nice mix. I don't think what the threat can bee. maybe aliens, outcasts or an interior enemy. Did some interior enviro.
Sushy
July 28th, 2012, 09:32 AM
ah so that thing is a kaaba lol XD
I was already wondering what it was :D
Great sketches guys
That last environment is cool too, that window really matches the theme :>
Sorry I have not been so active lately, work was heavy and the weather has been hot as fuck
Anyway, I am back agian :>
Yeah there could be an enemy. I thought of infidels... or people with different beliefs :D Christians, hindus or... pastafarians? XD http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Spaghetti_Monster
Indeed, we should not try to make a political or religious statement.
We could also make extreme moon creatures or something that are dangerous.
I had an idea of a creature but that was not of the dangerous kind. And I wonder if it could live there XD

Velocity. Nice pictures.
I love the idea of pastafarians to I mean they can still have these cool arabic elements.
Sushy very cute crature. I agree we should have some creatures. Perhaps they culd have some domestic pets inside and some geneticaly modified creatures and plants designed to resist the tuff climate on the moon.

Hi guys, great stuff going on. Iīm really sorry for missing out. It’s been a busy couple of weeks for me but I will try to make it up.
I am reading up on the thread right now. To sum up what we have so far, a moon based culture with a Arabic feel to them ? Sounds cool. Can we flesh out the story even more? Are they good or evil? What are the defending themselves against?
I love the pastafarians story, it triggers my imagination. I could definitely see us building a universe around that :)

i like your piratical pastafarian sush! going round enforcing atheism and rationality on people whether they like it or not!
I thought maybe our peaceable moon people might be in charge of some big industrial complex or machine, like the colonists in alien.
you couldnt terraform the moon its too light to retain the atmosphere, so maybe mining?
i thought it might be cool if they were launching the stuff theyd mined to orbit, and thought maybe it would be neat if instead of rockets they used huge machines a bit like golf clubs built out of the home craters wall to schmack the stuff into space. so the big hammers wind up with rockets and then the load pops up, maybe its a ten thousand tonne block of steel encased in diamond, or whatever, and ping! off it goes to space! like a monster driving range.
and maybe the baddies are trying to mess with their livelinhoods by attaching the machines (which would blow up nice, think of that thing in Contact)
then you get the good old villages beset by bandits theme! or something.
pretty silly i know, and i couldnt really get the images to work yet but hought id throw em up anyway.

Cool pirate. I personally like the idea with pastafarians but muslims are also ok. Design wise I don't think their have to be any different and the pastrafarians can come in as enemies.
Velocity
I think it's a great idea I also like the design its reminds me of oil pumps at the same time its looks futuristic and alien.
I definitely think we should go for it. it's
Maybe we can al start on the different tasks in the brief. If someone have a particular wish for some task. For me any is ok .

i have bad news guys. :( i may have to withdraw from the team D: some financial troubles... nothing drastic, i just really need to focus on them to make sure they're taken care of and i don't see how i'm going to have time to make my inclusion on the team worth it. very regretful to say this as i was really excited about participating. my desire is to wait and see if things take a turn and my schedule clears, but that wouldn't be fair to you guys. if it does turn out that my schedule clears perhaps i will revisit and see if i can offer help, but for now you should plan on only needing 5 works. best of luck to you though and i look forward to your progress. :)

I love them. I heard jumping is the best way for a man to move on the moon so a guess it goes for vehicles too.
I got stuck in some costumes for a wile and just posting what came out.
Anybody has an Idea how the low gravity impact on architecture.

Just some late thoughts. The people on the moon must be technically advanced so they wont be depended on animals maybe they can have some genetically modified pets for sport.
Velocity Kendall
August 15th, 2012, 10:52 PM
HA amazing! look what my friend said in skype when we were talking about the machines:
"[15/08/2012 18:19:00] Steve Taylor: just get a kangaroo in a space suit
[15/08/2012 18:19:06] Steve Taylor: get on its back
[15/08/2012 18:19:38] Al Brady: in its pouch
[15/08/2012 18:19:49] Al Brady: have a little window in its tummy
[15/08/2012 18:19:58] Steve Taylor: ha ha discusting
and youd already done it! brill!
Maybe we could have a chase. the invaders and the space kangaroo riders have a death defying chace over the surface of the moon, or maybe over the top of the giant machines a bit like that scene in North By Northwest at Mount Rushmoor.
in any case i think were really getting somewhere.
and i love the lady with the suspensor lights in her clothes and the speghetti spacesuit guy too.

That is amazing. I think we finding some kind of track.
Perhaps we can have to groups of people on the moon with totally different religion, architecture, society one of them relying on mechanics and the other on genetically modified animals

I am sorry I have not been active lately :<
If we still want to win this thing I guess it is time to get working on the final images (I mean, the deadline is at the 23rd already).
How about Velocity finishes the environment, JanJager the character, Jager the industrial design and me the creature?
After that we should (or whoever wants) get working on the illustration?

Oh yeah we could also change that "list" that I made, it was just something I mashed up together quickly.
I designed a new creature. Another pet for them xD

Very cute little creature. I can imagine the homlanders love them.
I think we have a good start. Space muslims living in a big crater Throwing minerals into orbit and move by hoppers ,terrorised by pastrefarians on kangaroos they turning to the homeland guardian. The trouble we have is that we running out of time. We could need another six week. Im still stuck in the pastrafarans temple.
Velocity Kendall
August 22nd, 2012, 10:24 PM
hi guys!
i thought maybe the big banana shaped thing might be the mass driver that pushes stuff into earth orbit. maybe luxury products or construction concrete or something, and maybe those pastafarian fucks want to like, steal the package? or divert it onto New New York or something..? But maybe the home world guardian has to try and stop them..?
maybe the homeworld guardian is just a brave person who happens to be there in a hopper at the right time and steps up.. or..this isage sucks it needs chopping around a lot or scrapping. not enough thumbs,,,
oo i just saw these cool water jacket towers, theyre great! you could fill them with life maybe, hot pool algae or those worms that live round undersea vents or something. worms or oysters with added green chromatophores or something, to make air and eat rubbish as well as act as a coolant system....
JanJager
August 23rd, 2012, 09:49 PM

I really like your ideas Velocity.

Velocity Kendall
August 24th, 2012, 11:34 AM
nah dont worry about deadlines, its been great fun working with you two coming up with ideas. hell, im going to keep adding more.
i think theres loads of mileage in the themes we;ve come up with, and its helping me learn to paint scenes, which i badly need to practice a lot.
hey i realliy like how your pastafarian meeting hall looks like an inside out pirate galleon, or the hollow space a pirate ship would make if you booleaned it out of a solid block. clever!
Sushy
August 25th, 2012, 07:39 AM

Letīs keep on. I feels like we heading somewhere steep by step.
Did some thumbs on the guardian. Went for a guy or girl in moon jumpers Jumping around in the mountain looking for criminals and enemies and to kick their asses. Don't know if its a dead track or can lead some where .
