anyways... WELCOME!!!!

this is the thread we will be posting all of our work in progresses for the team challenge! so... to start things off, id like to just post an image i threw together to give us all some inspiraton!!
(just to be clear, none of these are my images)

i dont have any real ideas yet, at least story wise.. but i am partial to sci-fi, as you could probaby tell by the above image..

setting could be anything really. i like lived in places. places that feel like they have actually been home to lots of people. grimy,dingy, places. nothing too sleek or sterile.

i could also be down for something a bit more fantasy oriented. lush woods. i love that kind of thing too.

anyways, ill just start sketching some ideas down, and if i come up with anything good, ill post it in here, along with some notes about what i was thinking about.

feel free to post up your ideas, and i am just throwing out my own ideas here, i dont want to dictate anything though, so i want your input too!

me and blake had a discussion about the story and this is what we came up with.


It's gonna like there's a warp gate and invaders like Zergs are coming through the gate who's trying to invade. And there will be something like a planetary defense force guarding the homeland.

There will be mechanical beasts, spaceships, robots, armor suits, lasergun troopers, airplanes and a buncha cool things, so it'll be a bit like Final Fantasy.

I thought it could be cool to show some battle scenes, some scens of the homeland, and some scenes of really creepy stuff like the zergs mutilating the bodies or something, and Blake said we could paint a scene with some guys in the foreground and the gate in the back.

How'dyou guys think?

Some very cool stuff here already - loving the baroque direction. More is more and all that.

Unfortunately ive been buried with classwork rather sooner than i had hoped, so i haven't had much time to get stuff done. Ive also underestimated my workload over the next month so Im afraid my contributions may well be a little erratic as a result.

Anyway, ive had time to do a little sketching. The idea was to do a pair of planetary levies- so under-equiped national guard types. But the result is perhaps a little too post apocalypticy and not quite decorative enough...

I've been thinking about how much armor we're gonna put on our guys. If we're going by Final Fantasy, I thought we would probably show more face and flesh generally so the armor wouldn't be too astronautic. But then there are very heavily armored guys in FF as well.

Or we could think about Star Wars where there are stormtroopers as well as jedis and jawas in robes and all that. But we do have to somehow make them feel like they belong to the same universe.

I think we should make the armors and clothings at least a little bit ornate and intricate, so they have wires sticking out, panels on the surface and just a whole buncha gadgets around. So they'll be more steampunky as opposed to minimalist as if they're in a Stanley Kubrick movie. But on the other hand, they shouldn't be like Gears of War either, with all those big chunks of metal around.

I'm thinking of something slightly more elegant, maybe with softer materials like silk or nylon showing through below the hard metal, and maybe some furs around(for the characters).
As for the armor suits and robots, I'm thinking maybe there will be something really high-techy and intricate, like a cone-shaped energy source, or very complex motor system with lots of levers and hinges, so they wouldn't just be an engine incased in a box if you know what I mean.

Just throw in some discussion I think, because ultimately we need some unifying style for our pieces.


I've been doodling a buncha robots and charas, I'll post them after some more adjustments.

And I agree with ya Lance, we still have quite a bit of room to experiment. And plus, finishing everything and piece everything together wouldn't take as long if we have a lot of stuff to work with. You style kicks ass BTW, I could see so many things in that direction.

I imagine him to be a very straight and down-to-business sorta guy. He never like fancy clothing, and in his outift, the radio device is his only concession to complexity. He also carries a laser pistol around, and even though he rarely uses it, he can be deadly accurate when the need comes.

those look awesome Aaron!! im really liking the chick design! mainly her head and face though. the suit is kind of bland at the moment, but thats a solid base to build off of! when i first saw her, i thought of tank-girl. it might be cool if she was like a punk rock chick who was tough as nails, and could scare any tough guy, but also be sexy enough to seduce them into an ambush hehe. could be cool. . . that way, she could also deck out her uniform almost to the point of not being recognizeable as a military uniform. im thinking band patches/ novelty pins/ dangling key chains... stuff like that all over her suit. -just an idea :)

also - i had this idea last night about the enemy. we really havent gone into the enemy too much yet, besides the fact that they are an invading force, and they are not from our solar system.

what if they were a massive swarm of parasites.. kind of like the flood from Halo, but less uniform in their appearance.

for instance... if the parasitic swarm had been barreling through the universe, wiping out every sentient civilization in its path, and leaving nothing but death and destruction in its wake... the host's bodies essentially die as the invading parasite (could be anything from spore cells to fungus to anything...) burrows itself into the the host's body. the hosts involuntary functions such as breathing and blood flow etc... remain online, and essentially undisturbed, however, the higher brain functions are shut down, as the parasite takes control...

this could be cool for a few reasons (a lot actually haha) but i thought this would be really cool because it could give us the option to fore-go the typical heirearchial type of villians in stories lke this... the invading force cold be literally infinitely differing in their appearance... from life forms, to weapons, to ships, all of them could be from seperate civilizations that had been conquered and absorbed into the parasitic envelope.

anyways, just a thought.... could give us a lot of freedom when it comes to designing everything...
