Spartan Camp #229 - 50 gestures + Optional "Knee Anatomy Study"

The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 8th of July.

- The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!

- In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Knee Anatomy Study", in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study:

The background
Since the knee is often regarded as one of the tougher anatomical areas to study, we'll give it some extra attention! Also see the follow-up in the next week.

The exercise
Do a knee anatomy study. Focus on form and function, not so much on rendering. What major bone structures are in there? How do they move, which muscles make them move?

You can also look up knee exercises on youtube, for instance this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7rsPgxaoDY). Looking at their function can help a great deal. Of course, you could also use your own knee.

Next weeks optional study:
Long study: knee. You can use this weeks optional study as reference. In the second week you can use your knowledge for a rendered, outer view of the knee.

When it comes to gesture drawing, where does gender make a difference? Proportions, mass, size, muscle and fat placement, bone structure, you name it. Once can often recognize someone's gender from far away, even with very little information. In this optional study, focus on these differences. A comparison may be most suitable. For example, a male and female face, leg, arm, torso compared. Or the same gesture, in both a male and female version. Or a side-by-side comparison of the two, the type you often find in anatomy drawing textbooks.

As always- reference advised, not obligatory. Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Good luck and have fun! And feel free to ask questions!

50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.

Criticizing each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference images and resources!! Let's help each other get better!

Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!!

Those of you that started already on the knee anatomy study, feel free to repost them here. I'm working on some reference sources as well- to be continued.

I owe a clarification for the sluggish posting. I have to graduate within a few weeks and am quite occupied and distracted as a result. Don't worry though- the Spartan Camp WILL continue!

Thanks for the new post Anthis. Yay for graduating!! Hope it all goes well :D

I'll re post my knee studies from the week and the ones I did today.

I used Bridgemans anatomy book, my own knee and pictures from the net. Was trying to get different body types and study the knee in different ways. The last one was going for tone values but not sure if I did it right.
42-45 were done without references, trying to see if I remembered anything lol.
Deffo need to practice feet.
BTW sorry for the random penis, my friend wanted to see if I could paint one lol.

Here's a repost from what I've been doing this past week. I've been studying general leg/knee anatomy. Bodybuilder/athlete legs, male & female obesity, and the form of the male and female body in general.

Anatomy studies are coming from here:

@Animare
Nice knee studies, the traditional ones from Bridgeman seem more informative to me. The ones done without reference feel proportionally off rather than being off in the anatomy.

@Smallpoly
Love the stylised approach to the gestures. The overweight people feel their weight. Nice job.

@AdrianNagorski
Try focusing on the connection of the upperleg to lowerleg (how they lock up and link in the broad sense) over the individual tendons. The Bridgeman studies work, but the study didn't seem to translate into the gestures and figure drawings below.

The 50. I did some in the usual gesture style i usually approach gestures and tried a few in a two-tone style. I feel like it combines silhouette drawing and spatial drawing. It was interesting around 4-5 mins each.

Will post knee studies after scanning.

knee study update. mostly referenced (except for the muscle studies which were done by drawing bones from ref and overlaying muscles over them. Its not easy to remember where things go, but its a good way to internalise it all.

The numbering isn't relevant to Spartan, so please feel free to ignore it. I didn't make it this week.
