Hey guys, I'm working on some typographic posters about musical genres (for fun and profit). The first one is about Rock N' Roll. I've been working on two versions because I can't really decide wether the red lighting things work or not.
The second version is a bit more complete and has better ligthing effects, but it still feels like it's lacking something…
Also, what do you guys think about the overall design?

Hmmm...nothing about them says rock & roll to me really? They don't echo any of the aesthetics of classic rock posters...nor do they have any elements relating to music, instruments, performing, etc. The typography is not at all readable so it doesn't work there either. Sorry...I just don't get a rock and roll vibe from them...more of an illegible graphiti vibe.

Hey Jeff, thanks for the comments.
Thinking more about it, I think I was actually going for more of a hard rock vibe. But this style is also far off from that.
I don't think the type is that bad, though it could do without most of the splatter.
I'll work on this some more and post again

At first i thought it said Kill Kill, then i thought it said Kock & Kill and only just worked out it saids Rock & Roll. Im not a graphic designer though so i cant really help but it should be easy to read.

atarr is right, this is a great design but the "&" should be more legible, the overall piece would be viewed as "rock roll". Those spark glowing effect you have on the O in "rock" maybe can be put on the back of "&" so its focal is a bit greater, making the overall piece more legible and clear. Overall the effects and everything are great Januz. AWESOME!

Hey guys, sorry I left this thread hanging for so long. I did a lot of back and forth with this. Changed "rock & roll" to Hard Rock, and I'm working towards a slightly different style. I only have the basic vectors, and layout done but I think it's starting to look like something. What do you think?
atarr, any constructive input is appreciated. "Kock & Kill" sounds like a cool concept tho, maybe for chow? :D
TNiznet, Glad that you liked the effects. i'm doing something similiar. Thanks for the comments.

As poster designs I feel it's lacking because it's more of some kind of logotype rather than anything else. These aren't really conveying anything new. They won't work for an actual client (say; a hard rock festival), and they aren't telling a story. It's just the usual stereotype of hard rock.
When it comes to the actual crafting of the latest one: whoa.... That guitar-neck really is distorted, it looks kinda fat and scaled.
But it's getting somewhere! Work more with the typo, if you want it to look 3d... Do it in actual 3d! Good luck :-)

Hey! Thanks for the tips. I should update more often, I kept working on this. I didn't do much to the fret (yet), it looked kind of distorted because I did in 2D and then decided it should be in perspective. Still needs a lot of work, but it's starting to look like something :D

hey, i still think it's nothing like a poster...it's a logo type plus the red is visually disturbing...try increasing black's %... Use a different type with legible R...Check out other rock n roll posters for inspiration

mehreent read my mind. Good artists borrow, great artists steal. Copy a poster you really like and see how it all comes together. It's like life drawing for poster designers.

Hey, thanks for the comments. I've never been a fan of that quote actually :P
I'm posting progress on the poster on my sketchbook (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=3487720#post3487720) since this isn't really the place to post WIPs (also, I update my SB more often)

I like the black and white one more with the simpler wing design. Take out the 3D element of the text, and put "Rock" in the same perspective as "Hard". Consider and different font. The first one was too stylized, but this one feels kind of plain to me. Maybe look into fonts classic bands use. Like here is AC/DC font:

You could also consider doing something else other than "Hard Rock". Maybe a classic song or lyric. Another AC/DC example would be "Thunderstruck" or "Highway to Hell."

I think the first couple of designs where amesome, real, and original just making the R's more noticeable, it rocks!
