Gent here. Loads of girls to draw here. (Jens can vouch for that). We should make this a monthly thing...

Orban
June 1st, 2004, 03:56 AM
Here too load of girl... living between the two campus of the ulb, no far away from La Cambre and so on :D

Seem that I'm the only french speaking belgian here too ;)

Orban
June 4th, 2004, 03:36 AM
Yeah, but what? :p

Orban
June 12th, 2004, 03:24 PM
Do some of you know a good shop with Chavant clay, sculpey or thing like that on Bruxelles?
And did anyone know where I can find a drawing board? Bruxelles too... (Or Brussels. Or anything you can imagine to call it, personally I call it the fucking place where I live ;))

Drumwhore
June 12th, 2004, 11:00 PM
Orban: maybe there's a shop you'd want to try, it's 'schleiper', located at 151 chaussée de charleroi, near the place stephanie.. I don't exactly know if they have scupley or an equivalent, but I surely do know they have a lot of artistic matierial, inclunding clay.
If not, I still know another art shop near the 'bourse', where I bought some clay a few months ago. I just dont know he exact address.. although I can look for it if you need it :)
hope this helps :)

:chug:

edit: what do you mean exactly by 'drawing board'?

Orban
June 13th, 2004, 02:11 AM
I know pretty well schleiper, most of my paper, pen, brush and so on come from there ;) But the only they got is normal clay and some kind of plastiline(without sulfur). Main problem with plastiline, is that I can't find info on what to use to paint it, nor if it will resist a long time...
And normal clay isn't usefull to sculpt figure for example - a bit too rough(And I don't have an owen to bake it ;))

A studio table, (tekentefel, table a dessin). Like the one architect use and like many artist - my easel is usefull to paint but to draw... erhm. I hope to find one's cheap.

June 16th, 2004, 11:27 PM
You got your 7th Belgian (I always liked that number for some reason).

I live in Limburg, studying communication and multimedia design. Nice to see some other "belgen" on the board ;)

Hyver

quick note for the insiders (= belgen/belges): keep the second weekend of august free, for a gathering in gent. the idea is to get together with ~10 people and do lifedrawing, maybe some demo's and location sketching... this is not for belgians only, but because it's "just a weekend" i guess the people who live "nearby" will be the first ones to fill the spots.
i'll keep you posted...

if you have any suggestions regarding the matter, let's hear them :)

cheers

Citizens of earth,

Everybody seems to agree: workshops are a great thing.
Lack of time and money has prevented myself from attending the ones that have been, and it sucked every time.
So, I figured why not organize a little something myself. Close to me. Cheap.

I'm not organizing a CA workshop. Not even a workshop. Just a weekend thingie. Getting together, having some fun and draw a lot. No big names (yet ;) ), no big demo's, just a weekend starting friday the 13th (yeey) in the evening (arrival) and closing sunday (15th) late afternoon. August, for those wondering ;)

The plan:
-lifedrawing sessions (models are booked for two days - yes, females)
-a quick tour of the midieval centre of Gent, including a visit to one of the masterpieces in oils: the adoration of the mystic lamb by the Van Eyck bros
-environment sketching in the Gravensteen castle
- whatever you guys can think of.. speak up!

the fineprint:
I'm aiming for a group of ten (10) people. I tried my best to keep this as cheap as possible. Hence, we stay at a youth hostel. I reserved a room for 4 and one for 6 people. 15.75 per night per person. This includes breakfast. The fee is 60euro for the two nights, including breakfast, models fee and entrance tickets . Add a budget for the other meals (free for all) and expenses in getting here, and you're all set.

What I need from you if you wanna join up:
email with a confirmation (i'll just pay for everything in advance myself, and you pay the fee on arrival - so i'd regard that as a promise)

lmk what you think - open for discussion, ideas, rants, suggestions!

i probably forgot a whole lot right now, so i'm sure more info will pop up soon :)
hoping for ten other enthousiasts...

Orban
June 28th, 2004, 03:39 AM
Will it take place in August? Since it's not written :p

And since it's going to be a Belgium thing, the problem of the language comes :D Will it be allright to only speak french, english, a bit of German and nearly nothing in dutch??? (I'm not proud of it, but I have a hard time learning Dutch for nearly nothing... I'm a shame, I know that.)

And last thing, seem that my girlfriend agree I come by, but to be confirmed... You know girl :D

Hyver
June 28th, 2004, 07:00 AM
First off, this is not a Belgium-thing only.. anyone who's willing to make the trip is welcome. And i think language should not be a problem at all... it of course depends on the group, but i guess engslish would be the main language anyways... My french isn't all that either, so i understand your point very well :)
Btw tnx for the august thing - i totally missed that (edited now).
Also, tell your gf she's welcome to come as well (wow that sounded almost like poetry).

cheers

I know Hyver is always ready :D(i hope he still is,) We don't need much people, just few to get the ball rolling ! So get 30 euro, so you have some money to spend on cheep alcohol and sigarettes get yourself a ticket to bxxl and lets get together ! we should probably sketch too , but thats not that important atm.

Anyways, any special requests ? like 12years old skotch, special grass or magic shrooms, maybe some porn? or who don't have any money -> paper to draw or maybe few pencils ??? so everyone just want the free pencils ? okay :D

Zergaloth
September 15th, 2006, 08:17 PM
Righto. I'm from Oostende.
I study Graphical and Digital Media at Artevelde, Gent.
Tried one year at St Lucas Gent but got away before they
totally corrupted my mind with their art-bullshit.
So I went over to the Graphical Designer kinda thing.

But I still have a craving to draw my own stuff and i still
have the feeling I lack a lot of experience and skill to draw
what I really want to draw... so... I'm probably (if it's possible
to combine it with a full time study) going to join the
evening drawing class at the Academie.
Seems like it's the only place where you can "learn" to draw
before they fuck you up with that 'feel yourself inside your picture'
and 'own interpretation' thing... God I hate that.
I mean, I like it, but I think it's necessary to be able to draw
something very realistic before you can put your 'own interpretation'
of the subject onto canvas. Ok, my vision perhaps. I'm drunk.
I talk too much when I'm drunk.

So!
I'd love to join in on the sketchgroup, but I'm afraid I won't really
have the time to meet up a lot, with all the work for school (and
maybe for evening class as well, who knows) I might get a pretty
tight agenda.
But hey. Meeting up even once would be a GREAT thing.
I'm no artist, but I can learn.

Back to that evening class.
Can you believe this? It's meant for students above 18yrs
and of course grown ups. But these lessons last 3hrs20mins
and that 2 evenings a week plus one every two weeks...
Seriously, which student (or at least, which student with a lot
of practical homework assignments) or which working man can
really make time for that? That's an awful lot of time, don't you agree?

Eew
September 16th, 2006, 04:17 AM
I heard what i want :)
i'm starting at Kask in Gent next week, Zergaloth we 2 already can meet, it doesnt metter even if it is just for an hour to sketch in some pub or whatsoever..?
Durin/Piru and Hyver both in bxxl ? it shouldnt be a big problem for us 4 to get together atleast once every month ? Lets start with that and if we'll have more time then we'll meet more, nothing official, just chat, sketch and drink.
So if that will work out then we can think further about something more "official" ? What you guys think ?
Something else: thursday were my exams, friday i got results and i'm in , you have no idea how much stress i had..was all like fuck if i'm not accepted i'll have to get a job !!!:\ but i'm in YAY ! :)
Sint-Lucas: i heard good things about and really bad...wich are true ?

Hyver,Durin/Piru already working in the "bussines" : and i'm always curious how people start out, what problems they got with their jobs, how annoying their clients can be,... all usefull info for a beginner as me. So if you guys got time talk about it , i'll ask question. Your help will be appreciated !

Piru
September 16th, 2006, 04:21 AM
Zergaloth, If you want to learn it takes time. Probably these are life drawing classes, and therefor the length of the lessons. Our life drawing lessons where 4 hours long. (This is also practical, arranging models etc.)

Eew, I studied there but I live in the surroundings of Antwerp. And yeah Sint Lukas... a bit two faced. I did Animation there, but it was more like a 4 yrs self-study than a proper education. I'm quite dissapointed about it all. On the other side, graphics and publicity at Sint Lukas truly is a good course. I actually regret not to have chosen that direction :) They have a broader field of education and even get lessons on software :o (which wasn't the case in Animation) Atm trying to find a job in the animation industry, but there are but 2 job openings in the whole of Flanders and Brussels together. I might be invited to a conversation with one of them next week. I send out a some letters with my cv, portfolio etc to some other companies, but haven't heard back from them.. We'll see, I'll keep you posted on the jobthings! ;)

Eew
September 16th, 2006, 06:17 AM
Well yeah what you expect ? it's belgium eh :D, i don't know.. i think it's really unrealistic to build up a carriere with some bright future in it...in belgium.(maybe i'm wrong).
How weird is that ? animation and nothing on software ? what you do then there for 4 years ? doing all animations on paper ? :sadcheerleader:

Zergaloth
September 16th, 2006, 07:00 AM
And yeah Sint Lukas... a bit two faced. I did Animation there, but it was more like a 4 yrs self-study than a proper education. I'm quite dissapointed about it all. On the other side, graphics and publicity at Sint Lukas truly is a good course.

Exactly. Self study. Not the least bit of support from the "teachers".
We got only four assignments in a year. That got really boring, especially
because there were no directions given. Second assignment, for instance,
was just this: Light and Space. Go on! Work! Hell. If you've never done anything
like this, two words is not enough to get started and to deliver decent work.
St Lucas is probably a good school for people who got the artist-blood already
running in their veins and who had a proper art education before.
Someone with mediocre skills who's not ready for the artsy-fartsy stuff is
accepted but gets no help or directions. I'm angry because they accepted me.

Oh and those evening lessons are really basic Durin...
We wont get life drawing sessions before the second or even third year.
I really think it's a lot of time. But I'll try to figure it out.

I'd love to get together and sketch, Eew. But as I said, I haven't yet
mastered the skills you've shown in your thread. So you might be a
bit dissappointed. But hey, I'm eager.

Best school for graphics and publicity is Artevelde at Mariakerke (Ghent).
Believe me. A friend of mine studies g&p at St Lucas.
It's still all about art to them. They make a poster and underline words, or
make them bold, only for the good looks of the poster. They don't think
practical. I doubt your qualities as a professional graphical designer if all
you think about is how the poster looks.
At Artevelde, the education is far broader. You learn to design with all the
following steps in mind. You learn about various printing methods, color
techniques, publicity techniques, finishing and packaging methods,
management, technical talk in other languages...
I think you're far better prepared for the real G&P-world when you study
at Artevelde.
(if you still want to, you can finish it in two years, Durin)

That's already 4-5 people around gent-brussel for a monthly sketch event in a pub. Sounds good :)

Zergaloth: well yeah , thats true and i'm the perfect example i guess, i just hope it wont be a complet disapointment. Theachers seemed to be okay so that already something.
Anyways 4-5 people.. let us know when you got time.

Zergaloth
September 16th, 2006, 02:39 PM
Only advice that I can give you: don't take crits the wrong way and work your ass off.
Don't be put off by nasty crits time after time, use them to your advantage or ignore them. Sometimes when you show a teacher the exact same drawing twice, he'll scream hell the first time and praise you the second time.
And work work work. If your work's not good enough, than at least they see you're a worker and you're willing to put time and effort into something, which is something many people lack and something I personally think is more important than being an impeccable artist.
'nuff said, you'll be fine :)

I'm in for the sketchgroup. My school's starting on monday the 25th. I got most of my weekends free.
I'm afraid, though, that my room won't be enough for 4-5 people and the rest of the house is cold and dirty :)
I know some sleezy layback bars though...

Eew

I'm in Gent.
Haven't got that much spare time, with those evening classes I'm attending,
but hey, there's always time for beer. You say when.

Evening classes problems by the way. Help me out here.
I've had my first lessons in the first year now but the teacher said my
drawing technique is good enough to go to the second year instantly.
But I've seen a couple of things on the to-learn-list of the first year that
I know I wouldn't be able to draw yet.
Teacher also told me I should attend the comic-classes instead of drawing
classes since my primary interest is comics.
But then again, I would love to be able to draw more realistic and exact,
and I think you need to be skilled at that before you start drawing comics
anyway, don't you think?

Now I'm off to show them some work and they will hopefully give me
some advice. It's a nasty thing, not finding your needs in art.

Eew
September 28th, 2006, 01:16 PM
Hyver i'll put the flyer of the thing here, it's vitrin art, and everything goes.. everyone gets his own big vitrin and just does whatever he wants, i'll post later today the flyer. (ps opening night and last night are all rock bands and music and stuff)

Zergaloth: where you take those classes, do you pay ? how much and can everyone follow them or ? tell me more :perv:

Hyver: I had to pay and decide now, and I thought the drawingclasses were the best choice, so I decided to have a go at the second year drawing class.
I'm going to regret not choosing comics, I feel it in my gut now already.

October 8th, 2006, 02:32 PM
ah well, right now on this school I'm doing "illustratie" so I think that, that would be close to "grafisch vormgeven" overthere? But on the website I also saw "vrije kunsten" but didn't quite get it if those were only extra projects you could follow, or real studies. If so, it seemed to me that "schilderkunst" looked well also.

Zergaloth
October 9th, 2006, 07:10 PM
Illustration is 'only' drawing and everything that comes close to that.
Graphical design (grafisch vormgeven) is meer.. nuja... commercieel gericht.
Posters, affiches, tekst&beeld, logo's, snapje?

And sorry guys but I'm really drowning in a pool of work atm, so no
sketch evening for me... yet. I'll make time! Promised.

10 am arrive, sketch in a bar till noon. Eat at one of the restaurants around the trainstation. Make our way to the movies on foot, catch the 14 o clock showing of a movie. Be done by 16.00 ish. Go bowling or play pool for an hour and a half. Find a place for some healthy sandwiches(dunno where this though :p) Which would make it around 18.30.
After that we can draw/talk/drink till people have to leave again.

But this is only a rough planning.

Also, someone else gets to be a responsible adult for the day, I have to play one for the rest of the year for my classmates >_>

Jonas Heirwegh

Looks pretty ok to me:)

maybe after the movie we can go to some inspirational monuments or paintings?

Hyskoa
March 4th, 2007, 09:11 AM
Would already be 16.00 By then, and most places take a while to walk to for any nice art to watch. There's always the SMAK, but that's modern art. As in "Look at the pretty black circle, it has 500 meanings and symbolized the artist taking a dump on the toilet, but it's still a black circle". Just in case anyone is dying to see stuff like that.

So you'll have to chose, either see a movie or visit the church with work from reubens, van eyck, ... but I'm not 100% sure if it will be open, damn those churches and their free spirit.

Either is fine really.
Just make sure you people decide in time.
The movies are around 8 ish euro, the van eyck around 5 euro.

I would v loved too see little miss sunshine but missed it...Too b short: im a bit of a movie geek, altough i almost never go to the movies.
Musea is also really fine by me, but the SMAK is just not my thing (a bit too modern for my taste) so i prefer more classical masterworks.

Alrighty then, to what I think this is the new and inproved planning from what I've read out of the last posts:

Thursday 05/04/07 (first thursday in the holidays)

Meeting at 10 am in the station
(Hyver drops his stuff at Melancholie's place?)
Find a spot to sketch till noon
Lunch somewhere (I recommend the Panos, first class munchies = food :P))
Then, if still wanted, some more sketching till we drop :D (or something else for that matter)

About the sketching in the afternoon: We could change locations once and a while, otherwise it might become to boring after a while (perhaps a little game of speedsketching - anyone? :P)

And oh yeah, I'll bring my photocamera - we have to get pictures of this guys - to warm up the others here and just for the fun :D :D :D

Anyway, this is all just my vision, so feel free to improve it, but beware of the deadline :P

So if you're willing to come could you please confirm here ? :D (to get a small idea of the group)

i'm spending my week in Ostend because the house is deserted and I can concentrate on my design work.
So I don't know if I'll make it, I'm trying to maintain a rather tight schedule this week. Though there is a BBQ later that evening in Londerzeel and I might break my schedule for that, so I might as well sacrifice the whole day and come over to Ghent.
I need to make sketches of buildings in Ghent anyway.

I'm blond with a pony-tail :) and will wear black.

Heya I got an idea to reconize eachother - just outside the frontdoor of the station - there's fountain with benches surrounding it and trees and all - how about drawing that? -I Know it's kinda late and all but it's just a proposition - anyway, I'll be weiring a brown jacket and a lightbrown sidebag (and if the sun shines, sunglasses too :P)

See ya 'll tomorrow then :D

Thought about reviving this thread, so I was pondering to organize a sketchmeet.
Sunday 15th of July at Gent. Probably not a lot of stuff will be open to sit and sketch, but I'm sure there will be some bars open.
2 till 6 pm. Everybody is ofcourse welcome.
Send a mail with a request for contact information if you plan on being there.

Dus Sint Lucas Gent is ten sterkste afgeraden? Op hun website lijken den lessen anders best wel "ok". 't Is wel op hun website natuurlijk daar geven ze er altijd wel een draai aan. Nu is er ook geen verschil tussen avondschool en het reguliere dagonderwijs? Uiteindelijk denk ik dat 10u/week toch niet haalbaar is voor mij, massas deadlines tijdens het jaar en dan in het tweede semester normaal gezien op Erasmus :}

Betere profs > Beter materiaal > Betere scholen > mooiere toekomst

@ Noë Eindhoven lijkt me wel leuk om af te spreken, ik ben er net geweest, superleuke stad :D

@ bliiip: Merci! Good luck with your choise of school ;)... Anyway it's not only the choice of school wich makes one a fine artist, it s also the dude's motivation wich makes it happen...ik zou zeggen: Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan!!! :D

@ Wim: Margit loedts is currently appointed as teacher of the paintclass :D I can only praise her! She s one of the best teachers I ever had... I don't know about Leuven; they are too severe is wich I heard (u can t even speak during class! thats like OMG...boring) U should get your ass back to Tienen, more fun and nice people... At least thats what I experienced...
Sadly I am going to skip this year @ artclasses...I've got to find some money/job one way or the other to get around...
