E.O.W Round #176: Mecha Flea Market on the Beach
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e181/chaosrocks/EOW2.jpg

TOPIC = Mecha Flea Market on the Beach
inspired by agnidevi* from DA

Brief:

A place where merchants sell robots/warfare mechas in a coastal bazaar setting.. so your getting Caribbean or Middleastern sci fi. Maybe Mediterranean. Maybe
Mesopotamian. Whether it's tropical and sunny or post apocalyptic with a dark, moody atmosphere is completely up to you as the world creator.

- Please specify which image is final in this thread!

DEADLINE: Tuesday, 15 November

ENTRIES:

artozi

That one was tough! It was the first time I was drawing mechas and an almost naked guy under umbrella ;) I went for showing more interior scenery, and trying to suggest nearby sea, rather than painting it directly. So the action takes place in post-industrial building which is the perfect place to get into the mood of selling second hand mechas. Intergallactical characters strolling around, merchants argueing - selling tension that reminds me of such bazaars I've been to myself. Great topic!

All the Best,

Did this last night, finished as much as i feel it can be at the moment, though other people will probably have a different perspective. It's more a corporate distribution center than a flea market. I felt like adding a bit of a spin on things and this is how it turned out.

I figured I'd look at a more sketchy take on the flea market. Old pile of broken electronics? It's totally a store. Come on down to Skansha's used and broken robot emporium and get a great deal!

in my opinion some really nice pieces, but three stood out. mateja's piece probably fits the peramiters the best and has a nice overall feel and good composition.
Hideyoshi's piece is really nice but as a piece of concept art - if you didnt read the brief would you have any idea that it was ment to be a marketplace for mecha? i really love the style, but i cant go for it based on technical ability alone, sorry.
so i went for artozi's concept. it comunicates exactly what it is, overall the mechs are down played from other work where they are more prominant, however should they be more prominant? a market is as much about the buyer as the stock. and artozi really has captured that transaction of buyer and seller that gives it so much life and interest. added bonus of things like the alien designs and the character emotions and expressions. for me this opperates on the most levels and seems to have more thought put into it. love it.

Huh... my WIP got put in the poll? Oh dear...

Anyways, voted for Mateja, slence and artozi. I thought they captured the actual flea market aspect of the brief the best.

Hmm weird I can't remember who I voted for, but looking back I think I went for
Mateja (nice overall feel, and I think addressed all parts of the brief) and
Smileface (love the limited palette and mechs, but almost didn't make it as it's arguab ly more desert than beach and a bit light on the flea market idea)

Artozi and Hideyoshi almost got my votes because technically they were great, but I thought they both didn't capture the whole brief. Artozi - really didn't feel beach here. The random seagull and odd naked guy under umbrella didn't quite do it for me :). Hideyoshi...real nice, but missed out on the whole flea market theme..

Nice work guys

Hey, it has been a while since I checked eow and it's nice to see that it's still full of talent.

Anyway I gave some votes.
artozi: Simply because of the brilliant rendering.
MatejaPetkovic: Great brushwork and the best feeling of a beach market for me.
SMILEFACE: He captured, despite his nickname, great postapocalyptic atmosphere and his robots are really terrifying.

I would vote for another guys, but these three stand out so I keep it his way.

btw: Android411, I saw your progres in previous thread and I must say that I loved the first sketch. It's a pitty that you lost it's feeling in later stages.

Thank you everyone for sharing great work!

Voted for artozi, slence, MatejaPektovic, and Corrick.

Crazy round guys! If I put your entry in the poll and it wasn't a final, my bad. I will try to abide by the EOW guidelines more, I just like to see your art in the polls because I know you will still get votes even if it's an incomplete entry.
