Need help with Illustrator

I'm being told by my artist that a 7 inch x 7 inch x 600dpi resolution is too large for him to work with in Illustrator. This seems really quite normal to me and I am trying to get my head around why he's having trouble.

Can anyone shine any light on this, but, more importantly, those dimensions seem really mundane to me. Are they?

These are normal dimensions for a black&white print, while 300dpi is enough
for color photo print.

Thanks for the reply. My printer wants everything in 600dpi.

This seems reasonable for colour images (last one wanted 1200).

Any advice for me or my artist?
