Hi Alex -as I keep mentioning here, Koto and I meet up every friday afternoon/evening at the V&A 2pm onwards, until about 9pm, for sketching sessions from the sculptures there. You, and anyone else interested, are very welcome to join us for part or all of the time. We tend to do sketches of about an hour or so, then briefly mutually critique before going on to the next sketch, and also discuss related issues of drawing and painting, traditional and digital, and what we've been recently reading (online, and books).

(Hi, Kyle, and welcome!)

Exquisite Bodies
Anatomical Venus
30 July-18 October

In the 19th century, despite the best efforts of body snatchers, the demand from medical schools for fresh cadavers far outstripped the supply. One solution to this gruesome problem came in the form of lifelike wax models. These models often took the form of alluring female figures that could be stripped and split into different sections. Other models were more macabre, showing the body ravaged by 'social diseases' such as venereal disease, tuberculosis and alcohol and drug addiction.

With their capacity to titillate as well as educate, anatomical models became sought-after curiosities; displayed not only in dissecting rooms but also in sideshows and the curiosity cabinets of wealthy Victorian gentlemen. For a small admission fee, visitors seeking an unusual afternoon's entertainment could visit displays of these strange dolls in London, Paris, Brussels and Barcelona.

This exhibition explores the forgotten history of the anatomical model, which with its unique combination of serious science and fairground horror provides a rare insight into 19th-century beliefs about the body.

Hey folks,

Don't jump up and down yet because this is all very tentative, but would any of you be interested in attending a lecture or two given by Glen Vilppu? Everything's still very much in the air as I'm not the best business person in the world. But I've been chatting with his wife, and they're both interested in coming out to England as Glen's never been and it's been awhile since she's been out this way.

Probably going to try to work it out so they're based out here in Bristol. What I'm trying to gauge now is if people would be willing to travel out to Bristol for such an opportunity.

You might save a few quid on room hire, but UWE would expect their students to get first dibs on attnedence, so it would be harder for non-students to get a look in.

I've thought about UWE. Although to be perfectly honest, I think I can get something better than what they've got to offer. I have to talk more with Mrs. Vilppu to find out exactly what sort of set up Glen would need. Also going to talk to the Watershed as I know UWE's hosted events there and they've got a very nice space. So much planning to do. Need to find a legit business partner as well. Hence why I'm looking at Watershed.

But we'll see. Cross your fingers and hope like hell I can pull this off. Actually planning on relocating back to LA in the next year specifically because he's based out there as is the Animation Institute...and a whole bunch of my under-grad buddies.

The important thing right now is that there's a definite interest. Makes things much more positive.

Also a little quezzie for all the uk pro's out there. Wondered where the best p[lace to look for art work jobs would be, if there is any particular site or publication in particular. I sell via galleries and self promote portraiture and illustration but still dont have an agent to this date. Totally random and un-art related...although it may make the health food artist's life a little bit easier...

But for those in the Somerset area, there's a lovely local food providers that does home delivery. I got my first batch from them last Thursday, and they're lovely.

So for those of your arty folk out there who enjoy cooking but don't necessarily have time to hunt down a farmer's market, this is a great way to still get the good stuff without going too far away from work and the computer.

Whats the attendance size you wish to attract? - this may help with your cost decisions. The more the merrier, but then, a more intimate class would be better for attendees and I'm sure, Glen himself;

You mentioned Glens fees being $30 per day, but on his site, they are much much higher. I'm a little confused with this, any chance you could clarify, because that is extraordinarily low, compared to the site...

Apologees for the rant, it's just a fantastic opportunity to be in a lecture with Villpu - Im just adding my two pennies...

Molly - apologies for the confusion - think it was a typo. If you look at his prices - $250-300 for a 5 to 7 day stint, it does work out to be quite inexpensive - something like 40-60 per day.

As for closing the thread - at this point in time, there's not a whole lot of wiggle room for outside input. Until things get more solidly positioned, final price for attendance will be dictated by estimated costs. At the moment, I'm in a position that requires that I "play it safe" and make sure my special helpers are comfortable with any investment they make. Which is why the figure is quite high at the moment until I can more solid figures financially.

As for the rest...

Looks like I've got some help on board, and everyone I'm working with is really positive about bringing Glen to Bristol. The same "everything's still up in the air" thing still stands.

Because I'm still in the very early stages of planning with Glenn and my business associates, I don't have too many details as of yet.

However, (if I things go as planned) it looks like the format will be a four day workshop over a bank holiday weekend sometime in spring 2010. The structure for workshops is anticipated as being a 30-60 minute lecture/demo in the morning after which Glenn would help individuals. Each day would be 6 hours - three in the morning. Three in the evening with an hour break for lunch. Class size will most likely be capped at 25-30 people per day. Attendance would be available either for the full four days or on a day by day basis.

With any luck there will the opportunity for extras including dinners with Glenn. And possibly a larger demo/lecture for a larger audience.

At the moment we're looking at prices ranging from 125-200 per day. I would like to make this more affordable, and personally intend to aim towards the lower end. However, I can't make promises. I'm also hoping to find a hotel that will offer a deal to participants. I don't have an estimate for "Dinner with Glenn" prices yet. Nor is there an estimate for a general audience lecture.

I know that the price is high. But there are a ton of costs involved in this venture.

For now that's where things are. Once I'm in a position to give you more information, I'll do so. Right now, that's the tentative game plan.

Please have patience. Be aware that things could still fall through.

I'm more than happy to hear your input, and of course everything will be taken into consideration as I really want to make this a fabulous opportunity for UK artists. k folks...quick update

Bank Holiday weekend or another regular weekend for Vilppu?

Looks like we're scaling back slightly so we can get butts in seats and pay for everything. So will probably be a two day thing with little bonuses on either end instead of a four day stint.

But yeah...been advised against going for the bank holiday. What's your opinion?

daveneale
August 26th, 2009, 05:52 PM
People usually make plans on bank holidays-venues get busy, and trains tend to go bat-shit crazy (in the not working sense). I personally don't mind, but would guess a "normal" weekend may be better? Hurrah, for cheapness too-glad there is progress:)

We are there til about 9-9.30 pm, so you could perhaps still make it for an hour or two after work if you're somewhere in London (and not too tired, of course).

I keep missing these Nandos sessions, alas. My excuse this time is that I've just stepped back into a Mod post at WetCanvas, so have spent much of the last 48 hours getting up to speed again there. I promise I'll make a point of being at Nando's next time!

I am considering it. If it is on when I'm at university then I probably wont go, but it all depends. Everythings a bit up in the air at the moment for me.

My main reason for going this time would be more for business purposes. It'll be good to get some solid feedback on my portfolio from games companies and professional artists, as the end of my university days are close at hand and the necessity of a job is becoming more real.

Being a full-time student (assuming those forms arrive in time so that I actually am still a student) then in depends on the exact dates and cost but I definately want to go to the euro workshop. Especially if it's in Berlin.

I'd be up for hanging out some time.. If your just after park painting I'd suggest regents park over Hyde-much prettier. I've been wanting to pop over to canary wharf at night for a while to do some DS sketches of pretty lights and cool huge buildings-so if anyone else is interested it'd be good to get a posse (week nights would be better as the Jubilee will be running.

It's been mentioned a few times in this thread but you may want to check out the huntarian for awesome pickled animals-great for creature study

St katerine docks is a nice place to sketch pretty water/boats/little bridges-plus the tower of london and tower bridge are super close

There's loads more cool places-depends on what you want to paint:)

In case anyone was interested, there's an interesting blog where an artist had some of his paintings submitted for analysis. A number of people view the pictures, have their eye movements scanned then and recorded by a computer. The artist then comes up with a number of interesting points about composition and how pictures are read: http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/

Sounds good

Are any of the Bristol folk taking the open life drawing nights at Bristol Grammar School?
Definitely great. This will be their second week.

Something like 6 models to choose from.

Ive heard a couple of good things about it. I attended the Life drawing classes at the "Drawing school" last year. It made a change from the models at bower ashton who do the same god damn poses.
So If I can afford it and have the time I might tag along :)

Yeah, i attended there last term they ran. Really nice range up there and a super friendly group, they get the badger thumbs up.

If anyone is near aylesbury, i'm attending their life drawing at the queens are centre or something, untaught, great price for a long run of it, drop in too.

I don't have the number on me at the moment,a nd I don't know if there are any places left, but I'd recommend the Thursday night sessions at Bristol Grammar School.
Tonight was the second week.

It's 50 quid for 10 weeks. Have seen a few good artists. Lots of people who just seem to be there for the love of drawing. Which is good. Wish there were more pros though.

Still..great to have the choice of six odd models for 5-10, 15, or 1 hr poses.

London sketching people (V&A regulars, and anyone else interested) we're doing a bit of plein air painting today, meeting Hyde Park Corner tube station 2pm, or phone (not text!) me on my mobile 077 2454 7236.

I'll be bringing some oil-painting supplies and can share with 1 or 2 others, including a few boards, but if you have a pochade box or similar, or other suitable painting or sketching materials please bring them along.

dcorc
October 2nd, 2009, 05:22 AM
I was thinking probably not, actually, as I'd doubt they will let us in with paint. I was thinking more in terms of continuing to sketch outdoors. I'll be bringing alkyd oils which are fast-drying, so that it shouldn't be a problem getting home with your painting as it should be more or less touch-dry by home-time, if we end painting by late afternoon/early evening :)

ok well seems like no one can come this week, so it would only be Rich, me and Chloe.
Seeing as me and chloe live literally round the corner from the King Bill, rich is coming to our flat, so if you planned on coming but havent said so, then you're welcome to come to our flat too, and we'll supply you with tea.
If you carry on down the street to the old duke, turn left there, and we're in the building right opposite one stop. Give me a ring on 07794 770719 if you wanted to still come

So yeah...going to be at Wellcome for the morning drawing session until about 1:30.

After that...who knows? There are museums to go to until whenever.

Than wandering until La Cage Aux Folles at 7-something. That was kind of a random spur of the moment decision. My friend was like "Oh Barrowman He's hot and so is his partner" and I happened to look and see who was in it before...Phillip Quast. See...growing up with musical theatre means I recognize one of the original Les Mis Javert's before Mr. Jack-Torchwood-Harkness. Oh well. Still..what can be better than camp drag caberet?

:D

Feel free to ping if there is interesting drawing to be done. 07882614527

FOPP on Park Street has 'Pixar - To Infinity and Beyond' for £10. It's usually £50.

That would be the big Green Book. Amazon Link (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Infinity-Beyond-Story-Animation-Studios/dp/1905264216/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1255127536&sr=8-1)
