Since the sketch nights fall on holiday weekends, I won't likely be able to swing any of those. Anybody interested in getting together during the week in the evening and sketching at Vitas or someplace else? I want to try and fill up two of those moleskine books before i hit SF, cause you know people will want to see your sketchbooks there...

Sorry guys but looks like I'm going to have to miss San Fran as well, some sense of reality just came over me within acouple of days ago, me and my roommates hours will be cut down after the holiday which means we will have to strap any cash we have to stay on top of our apt bills, insurance, etc, etc. My apology goes to Eli who handled everything for me, and now I have to turn it all down. If you can't refund the plane ticket than that's fine by me, actually if anyone needs that plane ticket who's going down and coming back at the same time as you, you can give that to him/her free of charge, cause as long as someone has a way to get there then I'm happy about it. Right now my minds pretty much made up, I'll be putting in alot of work hours for the next few weeks, so I might not be on the board much.

I'm wondering if Laura is having a similiar situation since she just got her place.

So there's going to be an open spot for anybody who wants in for the Galleria hotel.

It was truly a tough decision and one I will truly regret, but I'm already 4,000 dollars in debt and planned to get out of it.

Bojee
December 14th, 2004, 01:23 PM
Sok- I'm really bummed your not going to be there, thought we were going to be able to hang out some more. I'll take your spot at the hotel if it's still available, I'd be there from the 6th to the 10th and then I'm going to stay with some friends who live there, if you've already filled the spot just let me know Eli.
I'm super sorry your not going to be there dude. The being in debt thing really sucks. :[ :[ :[

Thanks guys for supporting, your the best ever! I'll be looking forwards to pictures, and fuck I better go to the next one in 2006 or else I'm going to slap myself silly, I'm already kicking myself for this one, even Jason Manley pm about why I couldn't go, and it was hard, cause I really didn't want to turn him down.

I think those emoticons sum up my reaction. I was really dissapointed when I got the PM from Eli about this. I joke about you being a fan boy and all, but man it really blows that you're not going to be there. I was legitimately looking forward to hanging out with you down there. You're this ball of constant energy and motion that would have been the perfect addition to our room to make sure we were psyched even when we were exhausted or waking up in the morning. Your presence will truly be missed Sok, now clear up that debt and prepare for 06! BTW, Emerald City comic con is going to have both Josh Middleton and my fav Travis Charest in attendance so you are definitely going to it YOU HEAR ME!!!?;) If you need a ride I will come pick you up damnit!

I just got the flight info from Kekai and was on the very verge of purchasing the tickets, when I realized the return trip was PM, not AM, which would mean I have no idea how I would get back to Bellingham that night in time for school the next morning. I'm going to check my schedule, but is there anybody taking an Alaska Airlines flight who is returning at an earlier time? I just want to get everything solid before I purchase tickets, since they're nonrefundable and that makes me very nervous.

I don't think I'll make it to the workshop. There are too many factors that I'm stressing over, some of which I already mentioned here, in the girl's hotel thread and on my page. I'm getting rather frustrated about it, and I think it should be a positive experience, and not a negative one. I hope this isn't indeed the last one they plan to do, because if it is, that makes my choice all the more strained. I heard Jason Manley post this was the last workshop to occur as far as he knows... has anybody heard or read any different?

December 24th, 2004, 04:39 PM
hey caligula,

so far the group has mostly been meeting up every weekend for sketching and chat, at the ole cafe vita on capital hill. there's been a zoo trip, and a gallery show in the works, which we'll probably start on again in 05.

for the meetings, we alternate every friday and saturday. looks like the next definite meeting [after the holidays, with attendance] will be next year, saturday the 8th. that'll be the meeting where we'll be talking about how we're not at the san fran workshop :bashful: . but after that you'll definitely want to come by! stop by and say hi, and grab a coffeh.

As far as I know I'm the only one driving down and my car can only comfortably fit myself and 1 passenger.. it's a ford ranger extended cab (the cab is more suited for very small children and assorted luggage). I'd offer to let you ride with us but JP had first dibs, the cramped conditions for 13 hrs would have driven the 3 of us insane so Mike found a flight down instead.

well, what a perfect place for my first post.

i love that the local artists are communicating with each other. i really need to get some images posted up in this forum soon.

i'd definitely be interested in joining up with a sketching group. my buddy and i have been trying to do some coffee shop drawing at least 3 times a week. cafe vita's a pretty good place, but the lighting kind of sucks. top pot's better, but always kind of crowded on account of their amazing doughnuts.

anyway i'll be checking in frequently. glad to see so much cool art up here. chances are i'd probably recognize a few of you, i worked at Utrecht Art Supply for 4 years.

eager to hear how the workshop went. maybe next year i can make it.

till then,

stephan! glad you made it on here. the meetings usually go from 7 to midnight; between 7 and 11 we're at the vita, then go across the street to the sushi place.

hey zack, it's definitely a unique experience to meet with other local artists.. you can never expect what will happen. i think a few guys from the group go to the utrecht, so i think you might recognise a few. would be great to have you by sometime :)

there's a good chance i'll be late tonight, i'm packing, moving and buying stuff for my new place.. but ending the day drawing after being busy sounds good.

MetaReason & Kristen, Nova and Scuro it was fun hanging out with you guys.

Prehistoric and SMartin - We would love to see you guys! I agree, we don't have a good way of getting the day and time in an easily accessible format. Sorry. We were brainstorming ways to figure that out yesterday. Usually people show up between 6pm and 7pm, we always draw upstairs and everybody stays until Cafe Vita closes at 10pm. Then, we usually go across the street for dinner.

The next sketch meets are at:
Friday Jan 14th 6/7pm onwards
Saturday Jan 22th 6/7pm onwards
Friday Jan 28th 6/7pm onwards

Hope to see you there!

last night was awesome!!.. we had 300 foot tall screens where we played pac man, right before we all took turns giving demos! foster came by for a little while, so did sargent!! it was SWEET! :P

like David said, we talked last night about tryna organise our group a little better, by having some kind of calendar, plus directions to the meeting place, etc.

one idea was to sign up with Yahoo Groups which would provide a calendar [day, week, month, year, and all events] a message board [where you can also recieve messages by email], photos, member list and events. the only drawback is that it's a little spammy, and has ads. but nonetheless it would be a cool accessible way to organise ourselves. here's an example of a group for the band sigur ros: http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/sigurrosvon/.

also, look at this site: http://www.austinsketchgroup.com/main.html .. this is pretty inspiring, a group of austin artists that meet together just like us! lots of ideas on this site. if we were up for it, we could even get something like this rad site together.. looks like thjis group were even getting a show together at a coffee place. drinking and drawing sounds like fun too.. though i think we have a little of that going on already with our caffiene >:D

some other ideas were 1. having jason manley [our thread starter] include a link in the first topic of this thread to an updateable page/image where we put stuff 2. link to the group's page in our signatures 3. make a new thread for Seattle instead of Washington.. [an alternative to 1.]

one more thing.. anybody up for making posters? surely there are other mediums for spreading the word besides the internet? :)

whadda ya think?

Cool I like where we are headed it's awesome to know people who enjoy the same things as we do, and welcome to all the new members that we have, it's a good experience and it will only get better with time, so if anyone is southbound willing to give this poor sap a ride up to seattle during meetings let me know cause I've been gone for too long, I do pay for gas.

Nova - Is that Tryna as in Lou's girl or some different girl? We should definately make a website kinda like that Austin Sketch group, I know a guy at work who draws and his bro who also draws, and he's interested in the group, after I told him to come to this site he was blown away by the pieces that were being produced. Oh and congrats on your new place, tell me you are working on that game called F.E.A.R. I saw the game play trailer and that stuff blew my lid wide open, I was stun to see a creepy realistic textures and movements on it, and plus it had bullet time, crazy shit. That creepy japanese like ghost girl freak me out.

Hey all....miss seeing you guys. I know I don't come to many, but you know what - each of you and your work is inspiring to someone that does a lot of hearts and whatnot. :tihi:
At any rate, maybe, just maybe, I'll be able to get out to sketch this Friday, but that's only if the med legal work is squared away. Clients coming out of the jing jang!
I want to hear all about the CA gathering....lucky peeps who went, do tell, okay?
Finally, here's a salmon poster you may recall seeing bits and pieces of back in the day. It's been done for well over a month, but I'm just now getting an opt to share it witcha. If you want me to post it larger, lemme know. The actual poster was offset printed (q.2000) and is 19x25". Sells for $15/ea via the UW School of Aquatic Fishery and Science.
I'm gonna post it in the fished...er...finished section too. :nohope:
Cheers!

I won't be able to make the sketchmeet most likely, since I missed some school and have to make it up, but hopefully I'll be able to get together and do the sketch group thing again with you guys soon. hey nate, here's the schedule for the next few weeks. check back here close to when you're going to stop by, to make sure which day it's going to be:

Usually people show up between 6pm and 7pm, we always draw upstairs and everybody stays until Cafe Vita closes at 11pm. Then, we usually go across the street for dinner.

The next sketch meets are at:
Friday Jan 14th 6/7pm onwards
Saturday Jan 22th 6/7pm onwards
Friday Jan 28th 6/7pm onwards

Thanks in advance, oh and the friend from the Navy would love to join us if it's ok with you, he'll be staying at my place for awhile until he leaves to go back to Japan.

Mike (Undertow) - I can't wait to see you again, you gotta tell me about that road trip, you and Lou, Lou dude I miss you like a gay lover, but not that way, ok kinda like that but not in a gay way, but yeah.

Eli - I really wanna hear all your adventures as well, and tell me all you have learn.

dude, I'd totally be there if I didn't live in BFE and have all weekend. I can't leave the damn island because of some retarded ass changes in policy with duty sections at my command (that I'm supposed to be exempt from). With regards to the road trip, it was long. Lou is a dirty who calls himself a male but can't drive a manual, so I did all the driving, all 30 hrs (total), I am flying next time unless I get a 4 passenger vehicle and have other passengers that are capable drivers that can SHARE driving responsibility.. not that I'm bitter or anything.. lou, I own your ass forever:devil: (love you bro) ;)
As far as Eli's "adventures" ask him about the rubber fist.. and the trash bags..

I believe the technical term is 'service member';) So where was he stationed in Japan and what rate is he? I was in Iwakuni from July through end of October 2003 and knew most of the navy guys on the base. If he's stationed on the Kitty Hawk and works as an I level AT or AE he more than likely knows some of the same people that I do. What up Nate! Good to see you posting in here, hopefully you're wife has gotten over the fact that you're not as skinny as most of the artists at the workshop by now;) If not, you just have to explain to her that our work improves faster because we sacrifice time that we'd normally be eating for time spent drawing. Keep your nose in the anatomy books and continue to focus on the fundamentals and you'll catch up in no time. I wish I had the time to do that.. I'd probably get yelled at by my writer if he knew I've been spending the past 3 nights working on teaching myself digital painting instead of doing concept work. Hopefully by tonight I'll have something worth laughing at and I'll post it up. Take care bro.

It was great to see everyone again, Eli H., David, Eli W., Mike, Trevor, Labais (don't know how to spell your actual name, Didzy?? I still remember your goosebumps) Phil, and especially a big ups to Laura for bringing me up there :), anyone else I forgot the name to please insert name here ____________. I was so excited and probably forgot who else attended so I apologize in advance.

Mike thanks for the tutorials man, those are some useful shit, It's going to help me to reconstruct the way I approach my drawing to get to at least your skill level, and man it was great laughing at the great stories you were telling us, hope to see you again!!

It was also cool seeing new people, each day we get more people and I hope surely that we will get even bigger.

Zach it was cool to see you man, glad to have ya on board, can't wait to see your opponent's piece!
Anthony (correct me if I'm wrong) sorry I didn't get to sit down and talk with you, but hopefully next sketchmeeting I will be able to.
Rich, dude your funny, I'm never going to grow up I'm a Toys R Us kids, love your stuff even though they are anime, but the concepts are good shit.

Good to see you too Sok and I'm glad I could help:) I'd like to reiterate (sp) that Dane Cook's 'Harmful If Swallowed' album is the shit, so if you want a good laugh you can go pick it up at your local Best Buy in the comedy section;) Now for a little self promoting... i updated my sketch book with some of the stuff from last night and my attempt at teaching myself digital painting. There wasn't really any time put into rendering the color piece, but I have to master the basics before I start focussing on doing really pretty stuff.. I'm having a bitch of a time figuring out lighting:P

I seem to recollect someone going by the name 'Dragon' (spelling not known) that used to frequent Bauhaus on Melrose and Pine/Pike(?) about 5-6 years ago.
Would you happen to be that person, Draigun?

Lemme get this straight, the crew that's going to go to the emerald city comic con is Skrubbles, Sok, Redehlert, and Undertow? I washed, detailed, and cleaned the interior of my vehicle today, and have to get new tires. If David York's planning on attending, I might be able to make it this week. :D Are people going to the animation fest this week instead of Sketch Night, or is it a combination of both?

I might swing by vita's after the movie -- the animation festival is about an hour and a half long and it's just a collection of new animated short films selected by Mike Judge and Don Hertzfeldt. I went to it last year and I thought the short films were all really well done. The main reason for going Friday night is that it's opening night and both of those 2 guys who put the thing together will be there talking about it.

Hey, got a couple of questions. Were we still planning on doing that portrait show? And if not, could I get my portrait back the next time I'm in town?

Also, I was wondering if anybody has the environment sketches gnomon DVD by Feng Zhu. I have the coloring one, but I want to know how to actually do the perspective and the sketching for an environment.

This sounds like an awesome idea and allot of fun. Dave York, Eli Wolff, Lou Holsten and I made a full day of drawing a few months ago and had a blast. These guys are trying to make it an event all around the world. They're talking about Sunday but I think it'd be cooler to do on a Saturday as there's allot more going on, and places are actually open later in the day.

My proposal is this:
Start in Pioneer Square and work towards Seattle Center. Park at Pacific Place and walk down to Pioneer Square, work our way towards Seattle Center and then take the monorail back to Westlake from Seattle Center. Caravan commute up to Capitol Hill for dinner, or just eat in downtown. It'll be a full day of drawing from approx 0900-1900 (7 PM for you non 24 hr clock people). We can all meet up at Vita's at the end of the day and draw more creative things or just call it a day afterwards;) Life drawing is an important part of art, it's important that we not forget the fundamentals. The benefits far outweigh the cons. We'll all have some really cool stuff to show at the end of the day, have fun, and tour the city. Just think, a group of people doing life drawings over the course of the day, every person focusing on something totally different. The San Fran crew is doing it, we can't let them have all the fun! Besides, I know JetPack would appreciate seeing some pictures from home.. even if they are hand drawn;) For any of you that may be worried about getting hit with my second hand smoke while drawing outside, that's not a worry.. I quit smoking a month ago:)

That sounds fun as hell, Mike congrats on the quit smoking trip, on a side note I quit coke awhile back, I'm feeling much better and more energize, coke had made me an addict and now I can truly say that I don't need it to get my energy back....you hear me coke I don't need you!!!

Also zack and me are on myspace, a cool little free website for you to put your personal thoughts and stuff on, kinda like a blog. It's also a cool way to network and meet and see what every other conceptart.org members look like and what their thoughts on life are, so far I think I've seen about 25 and up people from conceptart, if you guys have time sign up!!

LOL, I flunked D.A.R.E. hmmmm can you really flunk it? Zack I meant Coca Cola, the sketchgroup knows all too well why.......I've been drinking coke and pepsi since i was a little lad, and usually consume up to 6 to 8 liters a day of it, had to stop cause my head was spinning, and my energy was just fucked up, then i finally decided I had enough and switch to water, there was some withdrawal and man I felt naked without my favorite drink, but this is one step closer to me becoming a buff six packed killing machine for the government......just acouple of more training camps, and I don't mean Al Quada...:P

Undertow, Scuro, Sapphire - Thanks. I feel better now. Mono, Strep, flesh-eating virus lodged in the throat - whatever it was it sucked and now it's gone. Sketch crawl sounds like a blast, I can't wait! BTW - Art walk in Pioneer Square is tonight. I'm TOTALLY there!
