Ladies and gentlemen - I'm going to be in town for a few days and giving serious thought to coming back to stay. Anything art-related going down, anything I should check out, people/companies I should meet?
I'd really like to get a feel for the art community out there, professional student and hobbyist alike.
Thanks.

So, I found a link to this page through Facebook. There seems to be a lot of talk about gaming and the like, so I'm not sure I'm in the right place. I'm looking for a sketch group in Seattle that meets regularly. I didn't want to seem presumptuous by just joining the Facebook group. Can anyone give me a little background information, and let me know if the group is accepting new members? I'm hoping to find enough communities as to be sketching in a group setting at least once per week. I see that your group meets twice per month. Is that pretty consistent, or is it more sporadic? Any information will be greatly appreciated.

K+ - All you have to do to join is to come to a meeting or post in the forums. We have been trying to take donations for equipment rental and facilities ( usually about 10 bucks) but all are free to come!

looks like dusty and his pal were seated at i-08 (if you still have the comicon program guide) which would have been across from baltazar and franco (the guys who do tiny titans). from the entrance this is straight ahead on the opposite side of the room, past the exhibitors.
cmalidore was over at d-15. i actually saw him (because of his top-hat and dress-coat) but didn't put it together that he was anyone i knew online... and people in top hats tend to intimidate me.
i think life would be easier if everyone on this forum wore shirts with their avatar and user name on them while in public.

Yup, I was sitting right behind my good buddy Ken Taya (Enfu/Bungie) and to the left of the guy that is doing X-men Noir (and the program's cover artist, actually).
If any of you guys have even the smallest interest in making prints of your work and selling them, I highly recommend the experience. Also, I can recommend an absolutely stellar printer in Bellevue that does giclee' prints.
I sold a reasonable amount of prints (for my first time doing it, I was impressed at this), but I handed out so many business cards to my site and talked to SO MANY people about my art, I can't express how fun that was.
I look at it like a gallery showing, almost...for a non-fine art crowd, haha. Just because it's a comic convention doesn't mean everyone demands Spider-man.
Definitely stop by next year if you remember. :D

Hey guys its been a while but id like to get involved in this group agian. Just been dealing with alot of stupid bullshit lately. Id like to be part of a setting that emulates a professional workplace, but with people willing to pass on some knowledge. I know that in order to get better i simply need to draw more. But at this point it seems that 3d skills and UI design is what is being hired mostly on craigslist. And almost all jobs require a few years of prior experiance. Soooo whenever the next meeting is ill be there.
If anyone would be willing to email me with what has been going on lately i'd be infinitely grateful.

Ya i do indeed. I think that it is about time to start being more active in trying to get better, so concept art club sounds like a good idea. Its just hard for me to get to the school now that I'm out of work and have no bus fair useuely. and its a long ass walk from 45th and aurora. If there is one this Thursday ill be there though.

I'm James (kinda tall-ish, kinda asian...). I'm not sure if we've meet each other before, but I think I know who you are (long curly hair, right??). I went to a couple meetings when Katherine and Chuck B were still there in the summer/fall.

It was great meeting everyone last night and just hanging out doing some sketching and chatting. Just a reminder to everyone the Thunderdome challenge, due June 27th, is GRITTY ROBOT.
Character can be in a solo scene but must be finished. We would also like to see weekly progress shots posted in the forum to see that you aren't just spitting something out at the last second. I encourage everyone to take part for practice and to help get your chops up. If anything else it would give you something to get some good feedback on.
Mike said he would do one for fun but stay out of the competition to keep the intimidation factor down :).
Hope to see everyone again soon...and see what ideas spawn from the Thunderdome.

The Kirkland Art Center has drop-in life drawing classes every Sunday from 1-4PM for 8$. The center is located very close to Parkplace, just follow central way towards the waterfront, it'll veer right, go up that hill a ways and it's on your right. I think the life drawing happens on the 3rd floor skylight room so you have to go around back to get in. I live right next to Parkplace too, we should hang out sometime. :lifedrawing:

-Gage, looks like a good session, going to check it out tomorrow. They have 6 sessions a week it looks like
-Art Not, Sat morning and Monday night. Was a good session 5 years ago, going to check it out tomorrow as well. Both of these are reasonably priced.
-Daniel Smith, Thurs night. 15 bucks for 2 hours? :|
-Capitol Hill Drawing Session. Weds night. 7 bucks. Haven't checked it out yet, but want to in the very near future..

Woot! There's one possible attendee, and from one of our old school guys that happens to be a rock star in the Medical Illustration Field. Seriously folks, there's a wealth of knowledge in Dave that one could only with they had. Speaking of which, I wonder if I can con Jon into coming out Dave. ;) So the question remains, East side, or West Side? I'm thinking a nice sit down dinner with conversation and followed by sketching and hanging out for a bit. What does everyone think?

I like the dinner idea but I can't make the 9th - or the 10th or the 16th or 17th...
But don't let me discourage things! If everyone else can make the 9th go with that - Better to have an active group than wait until everyone's available.
That said the west side is more convenient for me :)

Thanks for the heads up! I'd love to have it on the West side but I think that we've done the same hang outs on Capitol Hill to death and that it's time for a bit of reinvention! Allot of the pro's either work or live on the East side that are a part of the industry and I want to make this as accessible to them as I can. If we have more pro's present it will help drive the motivation of the amateur/aspiring pro's to make it out to meetings for networking purposes. Folks, 1/2 of the trick of getting a job is who you know and who knows you. The other half is your portfolio.
In the past we actually had a decent turn out from the professional community and witnessed a drastic drop off and I want to figure out the best solution on how we can prevent that from happening again. In addition I want to invite a new batch of professionals to the community that will continue to meet and pique the interest of others. The CA.org workshops aren't accessible to those on a budget and I think coming up with a local solution with the volume of talent we have up here is something that is desperately needed. Jason and the guys at MB/CA have their schedules all planned out and unfortunately it doesn't include Seattle all the time (one could only wish). In the mean time I want to create at least a monthly meeting for all of us to get inspired about that can re-energize the community and create a local talent based workshop that rocks your socks off!

The Lounge was down for a couple of days Dave. As to where I'm at, I'm drawing my arse off and really getting back in the groove. Both Lou and thatfatkid (who work in the same complex as me) have seen what I've been doing and I have to say, I'm pleased with the work I'm cranking out. I'm completely dedicated to making the next sketch group meeting one to be remembered. As of today it's confirmed that we're doing an east side meeting to cater to more of the professional community. This of course is no offense to the students and amateurs out there. In order to create an inspiring group I'd like to get more of the pro's on board to inspire the amateurs in order to create a more explosive growth among the attendees.

I should be at the sketch group meeting, though still an amateur. If flaptraps shows up, I'm stealing his sketchbook. ha.
UNLESS getting paid to teach art to total beginners would qualify me as semi-pro. In that case:
--SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION--
I'm teaching another Fundamentals of Drawing from Life class at the Maple Valley Creative Arts Center. Starting Jan 20th, Wednesdays, 7-10pm, 8 weeks.

I have not been to one of these before and I'd love to get involved. Consider me an avid amateur and it might be kinda short notice but I could definitely pass the word on to some of my professional friend if there were more details available.
Also, it took Google to uncover this thread. Maybe after 140 pages of replies it is time to break off a new one? :D

Looks like we may have a nice turnout for this upcoming meet.
Mike (Jetpack) - Haven't seen you in ages! If you're getting paid to do art, then you're a pro. Welcome to the club :) And damn, you've leveled up.
Idiot Apathy - Love your work. Didn't know you moved up here. Hope you're enjoying it. Look forward to meeting you at one of these get-togethers.
Mike (Undertow) and I chatted a bit during lunch today about where to hold this thing. We haven't come up to a conclusion yet, but I'm leaning towards someplace near/in Redmond Town Center. As soon as we have a place picked out I'm sure Mike will post the info.

So the hanging out will be on the 16th and not the 9th, then? I just want to check, because the 9th is my fiance's birthday.
Also, Eastside's definitely great for me, especially since my car's currently got stagnant water underneath and is being worked on, so I have to rely on my fiance for transportation until we discover where the water's coming in from.

S!R and Sapphire - This will indeed take place on Saturday the 16th. You haven't missed it.
I'm still trying to narrow down a location. Having it around the Redmond Town Center would be best. I'm thinking of either Ruby's Dinner or Tully's Coffee. I don't know how big the Tullys is here. I should be in the area today, so I'll see how many people it can hold. I was also thinking of Victor's Coffee Co, but they close at 7pm on Saturdays and don't like it when you hang around for too long.
Edit: Tully's is way too small. Ruby's Diner looks to be big enough to accommodate a group of us.

Looks like this is the plan...
When:
Saturday, Jan 16th, 5pm-whenever
Where:
Ruby's Diner (Redmond Town Center)
16501 NE 74th St, Redmond, WA
Why:
chat, draw, eat, and drink bad coffee.
Bring your art buddies!
I'll even send out a work email this week to see if I can round up a few Microsoft artists.

Looks like I'll be able to make it for at least a couple of hours. Are we gonna work to accomplish anything or just hang? At some point I thought it would be fun to swap sketchbooks around just to take a peek. Maybe even starting a drawing on one then rotating them around the room as everyone adds to the last drawing? I dunno, maybe overdone but either way I'll see you guys!
Hey Dusty, I'll see you at ECCC. Have you ever had your stuff up at Norwescon? It happens easter weekend and the panel space is cheap. There is an art show you can sell originals and prints at and then I run artists alley., not quite as big as the one at ECCC but fun for participants.

Dusty - It's coming up that soon? GEEZ. I'll probably go.
silvestri99 - I didn't plan there to be any mandatory tdomes or homework. I think that's been a bit of a problem in the past. Scares too many people from coming out. I just wanted it to be a time artists could hang out, network, relax, chat, and draw if they want. If you want to pass around your sketchbook go ahead. My current sketchbook is mostly filled with old embarrasing stuff... I'm mainly using it because there's still blank pages and I'm too lazy to go to the art store. /excuses
Sapphire - Oh shit! I can make it too! WOOT! haha

I haven't heard of it, but I'll certainly look into it. It takes a lot of preparation to get ready for ECCC, but if my brain isn't completely blown from that I'll check it out!
I can't believe ECCC is almost here, myself....last year's seems like it was yesterday to me. 2009 went by fast!

It was great meeting the new folks, Tom, Kevin, Blake and good seeing the old regulars as well! Sorry I couldn't hang around longer or be more social. I have a deadline that's going to be down to the wire even with overtime. I only put in 4 hrs tonight in the office and have a nice 12 hr day of work waiting for me in the morning. Next meet up I promise I'll be more active! I especially wanted to look at everyone's sketch books! It's always awesome to see a sketch book just to check out an artists thought process regardless of skill level.

Let's see to keep my life story short....i went and work for a few places and that was my focus was, working and paying off bills, i lost quite a bit of passion for art, lost focus on it and everything else. Only just recently in the last year i slowly got back into it, drawing many of my friend's newborn babies. Got bored at work and starting doodling again. Passion is starting to come back, gain a lot of motivation that i didn't have before, and now I'm giving myself another chance. I recently got married and have a baby on the way. Damn life goes by so quick. I'm hoping to get back on track and relearn everything from the ground up.

Since there hasn't been much talk about the upcoming meetup, minus Zazerzs, I'm assuming I didn't give enough warning. Because of that I think I'll call off this Saturday's meet. I have a big project that I can use the extra time on anyway. In the future I'll try to give at least 2 weeks notice before a sketchgroup meeting, so people can find out in time and plan accordingly.
