I haven't been to the block in forever... can anyone that somewhat knows the place give us a good time and specific place to meet up at this saturday?

|NTeRN
January 18th, 2005, 02:35 AM
saturday nights get crowded fast so i'd say get there around 5:30 - 6 if you want to get parking. theres a nice lil spot with some cheaper fast food places ( quiznos, a pizza place, a few hamburger places, baja grill, and so on)

a good place to meet up would be in front of the theatres. id say look fro fukifini if your coming.... hes the tall guy in the group so the easiest to spot :blah:

Sinix
January 18th, 2005, 08:14 AM
Yea, I'm wondering if it's a good idea to try to meet people at a place like the block on a saturday night, probably packed with kids and who knows what.

fukifino
January 18th, 2005, 04:55 PM
*shrug* The way I see it, the more people the better...gives me more people to draw (even if half of them won't sit/stand still for more than 2 seconds.) Unless we have a huge number of people show up and finding one place for us all to sit down becomes an issue, I don't think it's all that bad.

Sinix
January 18th, 2005, 08:41 PM
Alright.. so should we call it?

Saturday, the 22nd at the Block. Meeting at 5:30 in front of the theaters.

That's the plan, unless notified of change.

I just looked at that place online.

it looks like freakin disney world.
god i hope i can get a drink there

fukifino
January 19th, 2005, 02:33 AM
Haha, it's just an outdoor mall, saraesc. There are plenty of restaurants and even a brewery (I'm assuming you mean alcoholic beverage.)

I'll be there for sure. But I'll probably only be there a few hours, depending on when this rave I'm supposed to go to starts.

its pretty easily to find people if you know the meeting place. CSF had a skecth group every weekend and we never had a problem not finding everyone. just exchange cell numbers so if you need to locate someone you can

and ya its pretty much just a big outdoor mall

p.s. the best place to sketch is Vans skate park. half the time your laughing you ass off at lil kids falling :tihi:

Anyway, the goal is weekly.. so anyone have any input on where to go next saturday (or friday.. the seattle group alternated days)?

Yo, San Diegans,

Anyone know when and where some "good"(by good i mean cheap) life drawing workshops are in SD? I heard a rumor of a $2 workshop existing somewhere down here....I was gonna ask life drawing section but figured you all might have some better information.

much appreciation if you can help out...

Did anyone else post their sketches from sketch night? I posted my measly two pages in my sketchbook thread.

As for where we should have the next one...the Block was decent, although it sounds like there were lots of parking troubles. (Not an issue if you just suck it up and assume you're going to be walking, ya lazy bastards) I'd be fine with someplace slightly less popular. ;)

It'd be nice to do it in something like a coffee shop or something. Someplace cozy with a decent number of tables where we could just chill and draw. Of course, sometimes finding enough room for a small group can be hard at places like that, depending on the night and how popular the particular venue is.

But it's an idea...

(And I have no idea about your question, Stephen, sorry.)

Anyone know one?

Kambei
January 25th, 2005, 07:23 PM
I know of a handful of coffee shops up in the west la area..

Literati is fun
Insomniac off La Brea
Urth on Melrose is nice..

We'd have to get to one early.. but very nice environments.. chill good to sketch in.. Or hell we could make a day out of going to LACMA, Getty and sketching in one of their cafe shops..

fukifino
January 26th, 2005, 12:58 PM
I like the idea of going to the Getty. That place is great, and there are plenty of benches/tables/whatever to hang out at. Plus if you need some inspiration, just wander around one of the exhibits. I've only been there once, but have been meaning to go back.

How late are they open, though? Don't they close at sundown? Unfortunately, I have a Saturday class in San Diego that doesn't get out til 1:30. Not that that's really a big deal..I could still get to the Getty by...4? If everyone else was already there for a few hours, I could deal with only getting an hour of draw on with everyone. We could always move to a nearby coffee shop afterwards?

PhilHolland
January 26th, 2005, 01:10 PM
For a little while I went to the Getty every weekend to sketch.
Very cool place to do that sort of thing. Lot's of space.
Lot's of people to look at.
Easy access to snacks too.

Maybe we should set the getty for 2 or 3 weeks from now so we can get a good number of people interested in going. Althought we still need to get something for this saturday.. as the sketchgroup is supposed to be weekly. The block was good, but the travel time for rath was kinda high... looking at a map... maybe somewhere around brea would be good?

|NTeRN
January 27th, 2005, 04:41 PM
birch st then? in the middle of brea, lots of people, 2 starbucks in the area, a few ice cream shops, a ninja sword shop and movie theatres. also pretty good parking if you get there early.

right off imperial and i think brea blvd or something like that

January 27th, 2005, 06:36 PM
Getty or Brea are fine with me. As for the Block.. I would have cut about 20 min off my travel time if I had gotten off at the right exit, but it's only suppose to be a 40 min drive. :) And I'm not too clear on when you guys are going to the Getty. I'll go with the idea that we should wait a few weeks so that more people have a chance to see this and prepare, and if it is this weekend then I'm fine with that.

This may not fly for everyone, but how do y'all feel about going to the San Diego Wild Animal Park? Or the San Diego Zoo? I think that would be an awesome place to draw (and for those that haven't been to the WAP, it's pretty freakin' cool).

The grounds close at 5, which is the only major drawback. I don't know what y'alls schedules are like, but we could make a Sunday out of it (I don't get out of school til 1:30 on Saturdays, which would only leave a couple of hours there).

San Diego Zoo/WAP Website (http://www.sandiegozoo.org/index.html) Tickets are around 30 bucks.

im not sure if the year pass is a better deal, but I think one of my teachers can get some kind of deal on a half year pass if she gets enough people to sign up. tell me what yall think and Ill look into it for ya.

Okay SoCal CAers.

Sounds like |ntern and others are interested in meeting up at the Getty and getting our art on.
So here's what I'm thinking.
April 23rd 2005
This should give everybody time to schedule that in on their calendar and maybe get the day off of work *cough* |ntern.
The Getty is open from 10am to 9pm on that Saturday.

Parking is $7. Admission is free after that. They do have size limitations to how much stuff you can bring up to the Getty, but they have been flexible with me in the past when I brought a larger sketchbook.

Play it safe. Bring some extra cash for snacks. Maybe pack a 8.5x11 or 9x12 sketchbook and some supplies.

Here's a link : http://www.getty.edu/visit/

Reply if you are interested or have questions. I'm pm-able too.

Any thoughts?

Assuming the money and vacation time are there, I'm going. If I make it, I'm planning on spending all of my vacation time. This'll be the first time for me in Europe and I'd like to make the most of it, so probably like 10 days or something. Depending on if I can find some other people staying in Prague for longer, I might stay there or go to another country.

One month away. Everybody schedule this one in. Check out my post near the bottom of page 10 for some nifty details on parking and all that.

I've been applying to some jobs in CA at various game companies. My question is: What is the average pay rate for a 2D illustrator doing GUI work at a popular game company? I've been doing all kinds of research, and I've found rates for just about every other position. Thanks in advance for any answers. Cya.

trevor
March 24th, 2005, 03:47 PM
i dont know what others make but my rate
fluctuates between 40 and 50 an hour for freelance work
when i worked for sony it was 40 but for two or 3 other smaller companies
they were willing to pay 50
it all depends on the employer there really isnt an industry standard
a few of my friends who are full time a a few different companies make widely varied rates
fro 38000 a year to 66000
just try and get what you think your worth (experience efficiency talent etc)

We will have a meet up/hang out/gathering at the Getty Museum on Saturday April 23rd. I'd like to start getting a head count of who's interested in coming and stuff like that. Look back in the thread for Getty details like parking and hours.

Also, reminder! Do your taxes, register for E3, regsiter for the Con, Print portfolios! Well some of that's mostly for me I guess. 1 out of 4 ain't bad! Right? Right?

Yeah. Around 10am. I figured we could meet up at the main giant stairs. It's a fairly large place though. I also doubt we would stay in that area. If we end up drawing anything I imagine it will be in the courtyard or on the lawn near the garden. There's lot's off cool places to hang and there's tons of stuff to just look at.

I'll give out my cell if you want it I guess. That will help a bit.

Saturday is tomorrow. I'll be at the top of the hill (probably in shorts and with a stupid grin) near the main giant white stairs.

I imagine, depending on the day, that we will migrate to the garden area with the lawn or some of the table around the getty. If you are coming late it shouldn't be too hard to find people. If you can't ask a employee and they might be able to point you to where the group is at.

Jesus Christ Jayne, you're only 17? I took a look at the stuff on your page there and I'm impressed. God, what the hell was I doing at 17? Probably deep in a crushing depression from the Junior Prom debacle, and not drawing half as well as that. Hats off to you.

Damn, I second that. Kids these days, always showing off... :nohope: :P

Ion: If you wanna meet up sooner than the 4th o' june, plan something. otherwise, you're welcome to join us at the san diego zoo all day

Drawing at the zoo is fairly intriguing... hope you get a set date/time.

gobot
May 18th, 2005, 02:31 AM
Full price - $32
I have 2x $5 discount coupons you guys can use, which makes it $27
I have an extra pass, which I would really rather sell than give away, since I'm a starving artist. If anyone wants it for $20, lemme know.

For the rest of you, check out http://www.sandiego.craigslist.org. Go to the 'for sale' section, and search for 'zoo' or 'zoo passes.' I guarantee you can get them (usually in sets of 2) for much less than full price.

i'm not sure if i can make it the 28th. b-day is on the 31st and my old friends from da hood might be doing something that day so i dunno yet. we'll see. maybe the 4th tho. what zoo is this? san diego? that's a road trip right thrrrrrr

gobot
May 21st, 2005, 03:16 PM
yep, its the san diego zoo. if you can't make it, i've got tickets to the wild aminal park if you wanna go there another time.
The 28th is cancelled due to the fact that i can't make it. I'm going on the 4th, if you can come down for that day, great.

gobot
May 22nd, 2005, 01:13 AM
no worries jayne - all is not lost. if you get people to go on the 28th with you (like a rivalry between event-planners) then you're set. If no one ends up going a week later, I'll either go anyway, cuz its still awesome, or I'll put it off until someone can go.

Who's gonna go save poor little jayney-wayney from being dragged around the zoo by his family?

jayne
May 22nd, 2005, 01:29 AM
muahaha it's ok! my family isn't all that bad...well they mite get pissed after me staring at one animal for 10 minutes...but i can just throw sharpened sticks at them ! (i have a teacher who is really into "theories" and says that making a stick of ur own to draw with is inspirational (so far she's not all that crazy)). :^^:

gobot
May 24th, 2005, 12:57 PM
making your own pencil is inspirational? to sharpen a stick is inspiring? yes, making things is motivating and such, but a mere pencil? mmmmk...

jayne
May 24th, 2005, 04:53 PM
yea...most art teachers nowadays are into the whole "theory" stuff instead of the actual teaching...thats why im not going to art college... bleh! :^^;:

http://academy.smc.edu/

Right there.

However, you have to register thru here: http://www.smc.edu

It's a community college, but taught by people from Dreamworks and Disney.
If you're not impressed, then obviously you've never gone to a community college.....this is as best as it gets....for community college.

Is that for life drawing? How long is it gonna be going on for? I've got class on Wednesday nights, but I'm off during July. Wouldn't mind having a semi-local place to hit up if the whim strikes me.

From what I know, its every Wednesday all year long. I have been going there with my brother (Matt) for 3 weeks now. They mostly do short poses, a long pose is like 15-25 minutes. So far the models have been pretty good.

anyone in the LA area or within a drive wanna start hitting the LA Zoo on saturdays? we can all meet up at my place at 8am, go grab something to eat, then carpool there at 9 or 9:30 and get there when they open at 10. I need this, you need this...so let's do it =P
maybe we can make shirts that say "CAZoo's!" you know, cause CA + Zoo = cazoo. i dunno. i thought it was funny.

let me know if you're interested. it's 10 bucks to get in, but i think you can get a season pass. not sure how much those are. if more that 15 people show up, we can get 3 bucks off each ticket. but, considering no more that 5-10 people usually show up for meets, i doubt that'll happen =p

anyways, pm me, post in here, email me. whateva. let me know if you're interested =)

zoo was fun on saturday. pass is 45 bucks for a whole year and you get two free guest passes after a few weeks in the mail. parking is free at the zoo regardless of pass/no pass. food is pretty expensive so you're better off bringing something or eating before you go. pretty busy on the weekends. everyones pretty cool tho. most people were like, oooh, look Jr, he's drawing the flamingos. oooooh, hehe

not really any traffic on the way there either. the way back was rough. for some reason the 101 was packed and there were no accidents =\ anyhoo, i'll be going again on saturday if anyone wants to go. read above post for contact info if you wanna meet up at my pad and carpool there. sketches i did, show worthy ones, are on the front page of my site. click link in sig if you wanna check 'em out. peace

Well LA also tends to be the most horrendous place in which to preserve friendships with someone if you don't live around the block from them, go to school with them, or work with them. I have friends all over the area (which technically aren't that far away) yet I only see them about once a month.

..thank god for my live-in harlot or else I'd have no life.
