Dallas as well.
THIS is what I have been looking for, local stooges interested in the same things as me. For some reason, none of my friends are artists, and that tends to make one... isolated.
Nimrod, Subroutine6, Wycliffe, Robert, anyone else hailing from The 'Plex, post your pertinent info -- job, local area, interests, etc. Post a link to an example of your work, too (one will suffice). Us other visual people will have something to identify you by.
I live in Garland, have an Illustration degree, work downtown as a graphic designer. Got a house and kids and stuff too.

Cool...I used to live out in Arlington. ...I went to UTA for a bit. I still get out there(Mansfield/Arlington) pretty often, but mainly we end up eating sushi(in plano) and hitting the hobby shops...
Marshall kinda sucks...Longview is a bit more tolerable. I end up there often.

I'm in the DFW metroplex...for now :D
Finished my BFA in Denton back in '92, just got another degree at AI Dallas studying animation art/design...have mostly worked in Dallas, Richardson and Irving/Los Colinas although my consulting webwork has made me travel and work East Coast, West Coast and areas in-between depending on the client...generally living/based somewhere's in the mid-cities (Arlington, HEB, Irving/Los Colinas...moving again this Fall when my lease is up).
There was a life-drawing group a while back that was started through conceptart.org and we even had a yahoogroup email list...but it seems that no one could meet at a good time/place so that kind of fell apart.

Hey, Tanja --
Saw your post about the Sketch Group over at Polycount, too. I hear tales about the older group. I heard Glenn Israel started it -- it's too bad he moved away! I am so stoked about this one, though, seeing all the people that are hitching onto the idea.
Sorry you won't be at the upcoming one, but if all goes well there will be a next one, and maybe a next....

OK then...I'm flying in tomorrow morning! I land around 7:15 at Hobby, and I'll be working at the Willowbrook Mall Macy's until around 2:30. If you're going to be in the area pm me and I'll send you my cell number. Maybe we could hook up for lunch. I am a buyer at a company called CECO, but I just got an offer by my old employeer to come back to them. They are in the stafford/sugarland area.
I hear you about the art action.... Its like I dont have the time I used to, I would still love to do it because I have all these ideas, and a little bit of talent. Then when I want to draw something else comes up, my car club has something to do, or a softball game, or hell just going out and getting a few drinks...you know what I mean?

yea at one time it was a dream to make it into a profession, but now that not really attainable for me. But I still love to draw, and keep my imagination going.....thank gawd for Table top RPGs like D&D and others. I get inspired to draw, paint minis, or even write when I have to come up with a new character for the game. Then I move on to other peoples characters once I get a feel for them.

I haven't been in months. :(
However, I just signed up for a Dr. Sketchy Dallas event that happens this Sunday, November 2nd. I was looking for info on the earthquake (!!) that I heard about this morning -- thought it was a joke. Anyways, I happened to look down at the events section on the NBC news site and saw a mention. I've never been to a Dr Sketchy meeting, but it sounds like fun and I hope to socialize with a few other artists.
Who knows, we might run into some folks from the Dallas sketchgroup, heh.

Yup, there were a couple of guys at Dr. Sketchy's that had also been at the Dallas sketchgroup a few times -- they remembered me. :)
Dr. Sketchy's Dallas was definitely fun and the two female models came up with some interesting costumes and poses from their Burlesque show. The drawing group was small but that was good (to me at least) since we all had good views of the models without crowding each other. I'm looking forward to the next event, although I'm hoping the group doesn't get too big once more artists hear about it. I think the next meeting is December 6th? They'll update their MySpace and Blog sites with the info soon, I'm sure. Lisa, the artist who was involved in starting up Dr. Sketchy Dallas, told me that they had models scheduled up through March at least, which is good. Hope to see you there next time!

So a Texas thread is really broad. I see a lot of dead threads about Dallas (where I'm closest to) and other areas - did things just never work out? Just curious if any of the folks who tried to pull off sketch groups and such still have any going...or should that be a new thread?

The Dallas Sketchgroup was pretty active at least through late last year with the help of several Ensemble Studio and Terminal Reality game artists, and students from the Art Institute and the SMU Guildhall. I haven't been in awhile myself, although I still post area info over on the SG blog...and I haven't heard from those guys or run into them at Dr. Sketchy, so I can't say whether or not people still meet at Half-Price Books for that.
I know that the "Bunch of Short Guys" animation group was coordinating with Brett and other game artists for a bit because they were instructors at the Guildhall, or something like that. It's possible you can find out more about any Dallas area meet-ups through them:

I just joined a few days ago... I'm in the DFW area, Arlington to be exact. Since I went to college for art out of state I know NO ARTISTS HERE GOAH. D:
At least on this thread nobody will think I'm from Virginia...
Hey KrisCynical -- based on your website, you might be interested in checking out the regional chapter of the SCBWI especially since you're based in Arlington. :)

Heh. Oh man. SooooOO EXCITED!
I'm willing to split gas costs with folks transiting from Austin if they provide the car ;P -I'm currently in the Lakeway-ish area (west of downtown-mopac, 2222, 620) but I'd love to get together with peeps to talk about prepping portfollios.
I'm thinking about staying with my cousin and his wife in Dallas so I probably won't get a hotel as I am poor as dirt (this will cost me a paycheck or two) but foresooth! where there's a will there's a way kind-of-thing...;)

Just an FYI if you're in or close to the DFW area this weekend, tomorrow is the ABOSG general meeting, and also the Diverge Workshop up in Plano:
Quoting from the reminder email I got this morning --
Next Meeting: THIS Saturday, February 21, 2009
Location: Collin County Community College, Room C104
Time: 10 am - 12 pm
Speaker: Bryan Brewer, Character Animator, 3-D Realms
ABOSG is headed back to Collin College to welcome Bryan Brewer of 3D
Realms as he discusses the motion capture pipeline for video games.
Bryan studied 3D animation at Collin County Community College while
working as an Illustrator for Fasen Arts and Blue Line studios.
His first full time industry position was as a Storyboard Artist for
DNA Productions in Irving, TX. He began with the first season of the
television show, The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. The
show's popularity won itself an instant audience, several Annies over
multiple seasons, and an Oscar nomination for an eventual feature
film.
Bryan moved on to become a 3D artist at CAT Studios. He
learned the entire pipe line of production by doing everything from
storyboarding to being a render wrangler. The challenge of working on
films, television, and international commercials was just
the beginning.
When a chance to enter the game industry fell in his lap, Bryan
took a position as a 3D animator at Terminal Reality. He worked on a
Clive Barker game, Demonic. The game was unfortunately canceled, but
it was markedly canonized in the hilarious Happy Madison film,
Grandma's Boy. He was also part of the team that helped secure TRI
with the rights to the new Ghost Busters game. During this time Bryan
freelanced as an animator for Reel FX on the movie Everyone's Hero.
In late 2006 Bryan was given an opportunity he couldn't pass up. He
took a job at 3D Realms to work on Duke Nukem Forever. He is now
working on both sides of the motion capture pipeline, capturing and
then editing all human characters for the game.

I'm on here for several days, almost a week or two, and I never even noticed this thread. Well, I don't tend to look around, anyways. :|
Never thought there'd be plenty of fellow Texan artists. And yet again, most artists are from either up north or in another country, am I right?
Texas houses a lot of artists actually. Cities like Dallas and Austin are growing in the video game industry and are recruiting a lot of concept artist! :)
ATTENTION ANYONE WHO WILL BE IN THE AUSTIN AREA ON FEBRUARY 28th
At Gemini School of Visual Arts and Communication there will be an open house with a lot of really great artists giving demonstrations of their field of work! Check out the school here: http://www.geminischool.com/html/index.asp
There is also a thread updated by the school every so often here: http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=137711
The school is located in Cedar Park and is a little bit hidden, you wouldn't notice it unless if you were looking for it. Directions can be found here: http://maps.google.com/maps?oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=gemini+school+cedar+park&fb=1&split=1&gl=us&cid=0,0,7958161007059733463&ei=1jCgSbysCpjAtge9tLyMDQ&sa=X&oi=local_result&resnum=1&ct=image
I will be doing my best to attend this, but sometime during the day I have Solo and Ensemble for band. I hope someone finds this useful!

Thanks for the post! Yeah, I saw this school in the paper when they first opened a few years ago. Looked very high quality, but a little too soon to tell if they could maintain. I know they have financing from oversea, or at least I assume so being a plant from the UK school. I also have a couple friends already enrolled and wrapping things up here, so yeah-I'll be there if I can get work off and find a way there. :P

Hello from San Marcos. I got my BFA in Communication Design from Texas State in 2006 and up until recently was doing concept art for waterpark and children's playground products.
I'm excited about REVERIE - this will be my first CA workshop. Anyone close by - Austin or San Antonio area planning on attending?

San Antonio here (for a couple more years, anyway). It'd be cool to meet some local artists with similar interests.
Austin folks, you know that there's a Dr. Sketchy up there too, right?

I haven't gotten a chance to get to one yet, but it's on my to-do list.
Anyway, Howdy folks.

Located here in Irving (central DFW area) & putting my name on the list for who's where. Not sure where I'll be once I get out of college later 2009/2010, hoping to move farther south to the south Tx gaming studios at that point but hard to tell at this point.

I didn't think there would be so many people from the Art vacuum that is San Antonio! Its nice to see! Ya'll should start a group as well. I'd participate, but I'm more on the photography end of things and less on the drawing and illustration.
However, Ill still see ya'll in Dallas this weekend! :lens:

Hello Everyone! I'm new and in Dallas! Anyone here still active in the Sketchgroup that meets at Half Price Books? Or Dr. Sketchy's? I'd love to start going to both! Also going to start with TSOFA classes soon I think...

Hi LauraGarabedian,
I think the Dallas Sketchgroup has been mostly abandoned, or at best lives on in little groups affliated with the SMU Guildhall or other schools. I talked with a few of the guys that I knew at the Reverie Workshop that used to be involved and that's the latest news they gave me. I've been posting random info over on the Dallas sketchgroup blog but I hadn't gone to the meetings in awhile myself.
However, Dr. Sketchy's is going pretty strong and meets at least once a month...this past week there was a free session on Wednesday I think over in the Bishops Art area, and then a regular session last weekend. There should be another one coming up in early May.
:)

Sad day. Would you (or any other DFW peep) be interested in meeting up and starting one or restarting the old one? I'd love to meet more of you guys. (Tatiana, were you at Reverie?)
I'll definitely have to start going to Dr. Sketchy (it's going to take remembering... once a month is hard to remember!) You know of any other cool DFW things to check out?
Thanks!
tatiana
April 8th, 2009, 02:10 PM
Tatiana, were you at Reverie?
Yup -- sure was! Got a major dose of inspiration and things to ponder...but I also managed to catch a major cold that has kept me down for the past week, bleh. But, I'm finally feeling much better -- yay! And I can finally talk, heh, and not just type.
Highly recommend Dr. Sketchy. :) You can sign up for a reminder email from Lisa over on their MySpace page.

April 8th, 2009, 02:16 PM
Awww... sorry you got sick! That is pretty awful. Glad you are feeling better though. There weren't that many girls, I wonder if we met... :) Did you go to the womens brunch?
Once they have accepted me as a friend or however that works, (not a big myspace person) I'll definitely do that! Thanks for helping me out with answers, and if you ever get bored and want to hang just give a shout!
tatiana
April 8th, 2009, 03:00 PM
No, I missed the women's brunch. Boo. Did you go? You can see a bit of my profile in an image that Chaos posted from one of the group lunches I went to, and my nose is showing in one of the random group images from the Reverie group photo, heh.
I'm not in the downtown Dallas area much (well, at all unless it's for Dr Sketchy) since I work at home in the Lewisville/Coppell area, but maybe we can plan something like a visit to the Arboretum or the Dallas zoo or something toward the end of the month? That would be a fun sketch session I think. PM me and we can probably figure something out. :)
Edit: I sent you a PM with Lisa's email, but you can also visit their blog and maybe sign up that way (I think their MySpace site is updated more frequently). http://dallassketchy.blogspot.com/

Well I managed to successfully avoid the camera it seems! I did make it to the womens brunch though, and it was pretty great.
I'd love to meet you sometime and go to the zoo! That would be a blast. Honestly, if you don't mind me throwing in one more, my mom likes to go sketch and do photography too, she may want to drive out. I'll pm you next week (when I get a better idea of how my month is going).

Hey all.
I'll be moving to Austin this summer to continue school there and am looking for a new place of residence.
I'm 21, don't drink, don't smoke, don't do drugs. What more could you want?
Know of any great deals or good places to live?
Need a roommate?
Let me know!

I was really looking forward to seeing his presentation...but I moved out of Texas, darn it, and I can't make the trip back down there right now. Here's the info in case there are any Texas artists here on CA interested in checking this out (or anyone willing to make the trip there, heh); it's through the sponsorship of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrator's North Texas Chapter:
North Central/North East Texas SCBWI
Presents:
Stephen Hickman
Award Winning Fantasy Artist, Illustrator, Writer & Sculptor
June 27th, 2009, 1-4 pm
First United Methodist Church, 313 North Center Street, Arlington, Texas
SCBWI Members = $5.00, non-members = $10.00
Stephen Hickman has been illustrating science fiction and fantasy book covers for over 30 years and includes over 400 titles for Ace, Baen, Ballantine, Bantam, Berkley, Dell, Del Rey and Tor to name a few. His book covers include works of Robert A. Heinlein, H.P. Lovecraft, Anne McCaffrey, Andre Norton and Larry Niven's Man-Kzin Wars series. He earned a Hugo Award in 1994 for the United States Postal Service Space Fantasy Commemorative Booklet of stamps, 5 Chesley Awards from the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists and 2 gold awards from the Spectrum Anthology.
His astounding works combine powerful and arresting imagery that are reminiscent of the techniques of the old masters such as Rembrandt and Vermeer as well as more contemporary artists Maxfield Parrish, N.C. Wyeth and others. His color palettes and compositions are indeed otherworldly and create an atmosphere that draws the reader into the works and leads to endless contemplation of the subject matter. His works fuse the natural realm of the possible with the impossible, the juxtaposition of heroic creatures and sentient machines.
He is also a writer: his The Lemurian Stone (Ace Books, 1988 ) formed the basis for his Pharazar Mythos Illustration series, The Lion Pavilion being one example featured in the 1994 edition of Spectrum. An overview of his career and collected works can be found in The Fantasy Art of Stephen Hickman, and can be viewed at www.stephenhickman.com.
Please join us for what will be an interesting insight into the nature of writing, illustration and the visual interpretation of classic and contemporary sci-fi and fantasy literature from an outstanding and inventive artist!
