View Full Version : Rocko's Sketchbook
April 7th, 2011, 11:25 AM
I'm a 25y old illustration student from Berlin/Germany and i'm about to finish it in the next months.
I had a sketchbook here already but it makes more sense to start a new one, since I last updated it a couple of years ago :)
Before wasting too much time talking I throw in a few recent works and a few not so recent ones. A few personal ones and a few job ones.

Seems to be working now, so here we go.

April 11th, 2011, 04:48 AM

April 13th, 2011, 10:10 AM
hm I like those dragondesigns (maybe they resemble me of my approaches) for their more realisticlooking shapes.. can't look at those overused typical D&D dragons anymore.
oh and jepp, I don't roam the threads of the DAf too for years now.. its too sad cause it was where it all started (for me using paintchat starting to paint with mouse)^^
April 14th, 2011, 03:34 AM
I really love the first piece and all of the landscape pieces. Reminds me to start incorporating more landscapes because I mostly draw figures.
May 22nd, 2011, 10:28 AM
guys, thanks so much. sry for letting you wait so long. i'm an incredibly lazy son when it comes to painting/drawing after a day full of painting for jobs.
so heres a tiny little thingy i finished this morning. i think the weapon took me 5 years of my lifetime.
May 22nd, 2011, 01:25 PM
Awesome, love the smug look on the space dudes face.
May 28th, 2011, 07:17 PM
Hey dude, thanks a lot!
A little practicing of my render- and anatomyskills from head
May 30th, 2011, 09:58 AM
a ping pong collaboration between me and my buddy Dario. we had a fun time painting this little thingy.

May 31st, 2011, 10:13 AM
Big thx dude!
May 31st, 2011, 10:28 AM
nice - like it all - & the last three, the first landscapes & then the mountain side and adenture party in 2nd post and the asian sword fighters/demons stood out.
I like your compositions and content and flow/feel as the eye wanders over your creations.
Thanks for posting these ~ & that you do manage to do anything after work says a bit about how lazy I was when I didn't (when I did work) :)
Looking forward to more.
May 31st, 2011, 10:44 AM
great use of textures man. Like your paints allot
July 27th, 2011, 07:20 PM
Thanks a lot you two!
I was such a lazy ass. Well not really. I was doing my bachelor thesis and some jobs beside that, but no energy to do personal stuff. Except that little dragon right here. Got inspiration from Berlin Tierpark today. Such a colorful world we're living in, very inspirational. Note to myself: "Go more crazy with color. Color is your friend!" :P
July 27th, 2011, 09:30 PM
Pretty awesome stuff!
I love the environments. You have such a great use of values :O
The fat pirate is one of my favorites! hehe

Such a colorful world we're living in, very inspirational. Note to myself: "Go more crazy with color. Color is your friend!" :P
totally agree with that :)
July 30th, 2011, 08:02 AM

Thank you Mark. Vice versa man! I love your work for Alderac. Is that L5R stuff?
Heres a picture inspired by Berlin summer ;)

August 3rd, 2011, 01:59 PM
These last two are really nice too man, just a little crit on the last one though, I think you could have found a better pose for the horse, made him look more frightened maybe.
And well for my work for alderac, those cards where for the thunderstone game :)
August 3rd, 2011, 04:46 PM
really great stuff man!! love everything, but to be specific, the value work is awesome! and your colors are very nice, vibrant!
August 5th, 2011, 05:26 PM
Nicky: Really appreciate it. My use of values is pretty random sometimes but glad u like it.
Mark: Thanks for your advice! I'm not so happy with the pose of the horse as well. It's kinda boring. I just don't know shit about horses :D

August 8th, 2011, 10:14 PM
wow great stuff dude, I really dig the pencil sketch of the driking dragon with the black head on page 1. You got a great sense of scenery as the other said.. no crits except that you should post more pencils !
August 8th, 2011, 10:22 PM
awesome stuff in here. Dig all your composition and command of value. Subscribed
August 8th, 2011, 10:24 PM
teach me how to color please...:(
August 8th, 2011, 10:29 PM
Love your work, you are able to capture so much with each image.
August 8th, 2011, 10:44 PM
phew! banging em out eh?? damn man, your cranking these things out! and great work too! loving the colors!
August 9th, 2011, 07:24 AM
The last one is really great man, maybe you could have done the dragon on the right a little darker just to add contrast, but anyway it looks great, keep up posting man ! :)
August 23rd, 2011, 06:35 PM
Virg: Thanks mate. More pencils as you command!
Superswank: Thanks a lot. I try to put not a lot of thinking or planning into my compositions but a lot of playing around with visual weight and light and shadow. Just so much until it pleases me. That can sometimes take a while tho. Thanks for mentioning it.
moxieking: Man, I really suck at color theory. All my decisions in color and everything else are impulsive and feelingdriven. Can't explain to myself most of the time.
Just try to stay lose and have fun using color. A basic understanding helps tho.
Jeff Bartzis: Thanks! I try adding depth to my images. Most of the time there pretty senseless tho :D
Nicky Beats: Thanks a lot! I'm really enjoying painting and drawing a lot more since I finished my study. It was just draining energy out of me. Now I'm kinda free and I gues it shows in my images.
Mark Tarisse: Thanks mate. Yeah the last dragon thingy is kinda messed up with the values.
Some pages of my sketchbook:
August 23rd, 2011, 07:15 PM
Nice colors and characters.
August 23rd, 2011, 09:19 PM
really cool stuff i love those paintings and your dragons are awsome you can never go worng with dragons
August 24th, 2011, 09:38 AM
Hehe, NOONE can ever go wrong with dragons!
August 25th, 2011, 05:24 PM
messin around with the smudgetool a lot lately
August 25th, 2011, 06:05 PM
hey man nice start to a new sketchbook. I like a lot of the stuff you have in here and your pencils have a nice clean feeling to them. Very jealous of your illustration course, but anyway keep on doing what you're doing!
August 26th, 2011, 01:48 PM
Yeah, thx a lot mate. Don't be jealous about my illustration course. I didn't feel I learned anything there. I'm definetely more psyched about painting since my study finished. I guess the school was just not the right one for me. But what can you do eh? ;)
September 28th, 2011, 07:33 AM
Whatup, long time no see. Got a lot of work to do.
September 28th, 2011, 08:34 AM
nice nice nice! last batch of pics is great, especialy the ones with the smudge experiments.
September 28th, 2011, 10:58 AM
- nat -
September 28th, 2011, 11:18 AM
I love your environments! Do you paint them directly in the color? or do you start with grayscale?
September 28th, 2011, 11:23 AM
some cool concept ideas! Thanks for sharing! Keep on posting pencil pages, please!
September 29th, 2011, 04:09 AM
Fetsch: Thanks dude. Too bad we didn't get to speak on the digitalartforum convention :(
e-Nat: Usually I start in color directly. But in the early stage the whole colorschemes change a lot most of the time. My approach ist more of an experimental one and I don't know what my picture is gonna look like in the end. At least to a certain stage.
i'm trying to improve my workflow tho- It's very unefficient.
Surus: Thanks man! u say something there. I should definetely do more pencils.
September 29th, 2011, 05:09 AM
Very, very cool. Can't wait to see your next update!
September 29th, 2011, 07:36 AM
I love #39 , the vigor of the strokes and the richness of the blues,
also diggin the approach you mention, experimenting, thats visible in the freshness, also because you are not doing much shading its like you work most of the time with high brush opacity is it?
at least for those drake pieces
September 29th, 2011, 10:45 AM
It's me, Xeno from from digitalartforum!
Perhaps you know my name ;)
Really nice digitals.
