Hey fellas,
I'm a 25y old illustration student from Berlin/Germany and i'm about to finish it in the next months.
I had a sketchbook here already but it makes more sense to start a new one, since I last updated it a couple of years ago :)
Before wasting too much time talking I throw in a few recent works and a few not so recent ones. A few personal ones and a few job ones.
Cheeeeeers

hm I like those dragondesigns (maybe they resemble me of my approaches) for their more realisticlooking shapes.. can't look at those overused typical D&D dragons anymore.
oh and jepp, I don't roam the threads of the DAf too for years now.. its too sad cause it was where it all started (for me using paintchat starting to paint with mouse)^^

I really love the first piece and all of the landscape pieces. Reminds me to start incorporating more landscapes because I mostly draw figures.

guys, thanks so much. sry for letting you wait so long. i'm an incredibly lazy son when it comes to painting/drawing after a day full of painting for jobs.
so heres a tiny little thingy i finished this morning. i think the weapon took me 5 years of my lifetime.

nice - like it all - & the last three, the first landscapes & then the mountain side and adenture party in 2nd post and the asian sword fighters/demons stood out.
I like your compositions and content and flow/feel as the eye wanders over your creations.
Thanks for posting these ~ & that you do manage to do anything after work says a bit about how lazy I was when I didn't (when I did work) :)
Looking forward to more.

Thanks a lot you two!
I was such a lazy ass. Well not really. I was doing my bachelor thesis and some jobs beside that, but no energy to do personal stuff. Except that little dragon right here. Got inspiration from Berlin Tierpark today. Such a colorful world we're living in, very inspirational. Note to myself: "Go more crazy with color. Color is your friend!" :P

These last two are really nice too man, just a little crit on the last one though, I think you could have found a better pose for the horse, made him look more frightened maybe.
And well for my work for alderac, those cards where for the thunderstone game :)

Nicky: Really appreciate it. My use of values is pretty random sometimes but glad u like it.
Mark: Thanks for your advice! I'm not so happy with the pose of the horse as well. It's kinda boring. I just don't know shit about horses :D

Virg: Thanks mate. More pencils as you command!
Superswank: Thanks a lot. I try to put not a lot of thinking or planning into my compositions but a lot of playing around with visual weight and light and shadow. Just so much until it pleases me. That can sometimes take a while tho. Thanks for mentioning it.
moxieking: Man, I really suck at color theory. All my decisions in color and everything else are impulsive and feelingdriven. Can't explain to myself most of the time.
Just try to stay lose and have fun using color. A basic understanding helps tho.
Jeff Bartzis: Thanks! I try adding depth to my images. Most of the time there pretty senseless tho :D
Nicky Beats: Thanks a lot! I'm really enjoying painting and drawing a lot more since I finished my study. It was just draining energy out of me. Now I'm kinda free and I gues it shows in my images.
Mark Tarisse: Thanks mate. Yeah the last dragon thingy is kinda messed up with the values.

hey man nice start to a new sketchbook. I like a lot of the stuff you have in here and your pencils have a nice clean feeling to them. Very jealous of your illustration course, but anyway keep on doing what you're doing!
rocko
August 26th, 2011, 01:48 PM
Yeah, thx a lot mate. Don't be jealous about my illustration course. I didn't feel I learned anything there. I'm definetely more psyched about painting since my study finished. I guess the school was just not the right one for me. But what can you do eh? ;)

September 29th, 2011, 04:09 AM
Fetsch: Thanks dude. Too bad we didn't get to speak on the digitalartforum convention :(
theunknownsketcher: Thanks!
e-Nat: Usually I start in color directly. But in the early stage the whole colorschemes change a lot most of the time. My approach ist more of an experimental one and I don't know what my picture is gonna look like in the end. At least to a certain stage.
i'm trying to improve my workflow tho- It's very unefficient.
Surus: Thanks man! u say something there. I should definetely do more pencils.

I love #39 , the vigor of the strokes and the richness of the blues,
also diggin the approach you mention, experimenting, thats visible in the freshness, also because you are not doing much shading its like you work most of the time with high brush opacity is it?
at least for those drake pieces
