BGrizzMayne and I have decided to work together as "study partners" to learn the complex ins and outs of the concept and entertainment design world. We both are extremely hungry to make our goals and dreams become realities and this is where we will be posting our lesson studies and exercises. Much of what you may see here may or may not also show up in our sketchbooks. It all depends if either of us feel like double posting it in each section, where as most of the stuff in our sketchbooks will not be posted here, unless it has a direct correlation to the material that we are working on at the time.
Please feel free to follow us on this incredible journey and give us any comment/ critique/ suggestion that you feel would help us advance as artists.
Here we go...

Super pumped about this- I'm heading to work from 5-9 but when I return I'll post some pics of gesture studies today. My first true gesture studies, so expect them to be very rough! Lol.
Question for anyone visiting this thread or Brody (if you know)
When gesture sketching, or sketching anything for that matter, should the primary motor movement be your arm or wrist? I've always used my wrist but feel like the fluid and loose lines of gesture sketching call for more of a total arm movement. It's really an adjustment and one of the many factors causing some unsure lines in my drawings. But if it's the right way to sketch, I want to make sure I do it.

I've been told to work from the shoulder instead of the wrist, in order to produce lines that flow and aren't stiff. I'm new to this too though, so I might be misinformed. Anyone visiting please correct us if we're wrong.

So right now we are working through Michael Hampton's book Figure Drawing: Design and Invention. The focus today is on gesture drawing using the C-curve, S-curve, and L-line method as asymmetrical movements when figure drawing, rather than stiff symmetrical shapes. Looking at them, there are a few I stumbled on, thinking way to hard about the shapes and contours rather than focusing on the action and energy of the pose and quickly getting the idea down. Here's the work I did for this section: 1 min. gestures

Some Loomis Studies...2 with reference, 1 from memory and a bunch of gestures. My gesture drawing sucks severely at the moment. Im self teaching though, so its taking me awhile to get the hang of it.

By the way Brody...you're ability to draw from reference is really impressive. Your mannequins from reference look a lot better than mine- it's just getting that knowledge and putting it into your memory.
I almost wouldn't mind repeating some of thoes same mannequins, probably not as many times, just to further memorized the body proportions/fluid shapes.
I don't have any room to talk, but it seems like your proportion and organization get a little lost when you try to draw from memory. Same thing happens to me until I really master an understanding of that object in 3 dimensional space.
That might not have made sense, but hit up my e-mail or facebook me if you figure out what you want to do for today!

Exact post also in my sketchbook...wanted to post here as well to show progression...or lack there of ;).
Some character sketches I did entirely from imagination, no references. On top of that I used my Wacom tablet which I should mention is the first time I've also ever used that. My wife bought it for me 3 years ago and I never learned how to use it so it was just sitting collecting dust. Tonight I decided to play around with it and this is the result.

Same thing, only I tried to correct the cave guy's legs as he looks like he's falling forward in the first one....still trying to get the hang of the line of balance and weight bearing principles

Here's another rough sketch done with the wacom...again from imagination without any reference...really need to practice women more so they aren't so fugly....didn't really spend too much time on this one, as I was having some issues with pen lag in cs3....oh well, rip it apart

this thread ought to be moved to the sketchbooks section. you're probably not going to get a lot of traffic in here.

Its not my sketchbook. We each have our own sketchbooks in separate threads. This is where we post the work we've done in relation to the areas we've focused our study for the specific day. Its a study group, only its just me and BGrizzMayne.

Some Riven Phoenix Structure of Man studies. Working on head facial construction from 3/4, side, and front.....shit job I did...not sure how I do worse following a lesson than I do my own imagination but I guess you gotta start somewhere...I just hope it gets better
