April Self-Portrait Thread!
No fooling, either.
Guess I'll start this one off with a nine-hour Opencanvas 3 marathon. I think I've come a long way in the last month, even if I've been... skimping on the SP's.
Great work in March, everyone. A lot of improvement, a lot of new faces. Awesome work everyone, you should all be proud of yourselves.
And here we go.

Okay...trying again this month XD
One doodly painty thing from shipainter:

And playing around with said painty thing:
http://asbestoshazard.com/art/040331%20selfmess.png
I really like the second one best.
Silvrain :: I was serious when I said it was easily my favorite of yours. It's stunning.
jwo :: The blood...is creepy, I like the darker smears.
jook :: I like the second set of sketches, it's always good to study.

Cool SP's guys
Silvrain: very tight indeed!
JWO: That has a cool abstract feel to it, I dig it.
Jook: cool stuff, Your continued effort really shows.
asbestoshazard: cool sp....but what is that in the top right? :p
jetpack42: Looks good but try more values if you are going for monochromatic.
here is my latest.

Hi
Just had one of those days when everything you draw and paint turns out crap? Today Iīm having just that.
Anyway apriils fools day so I decided to post a sp anyway.
I used size 20 watercolour brush and painted to quickly so the paper crumbled,
saved a little with ugly white colour and some more ink
with size 6 water colour brush.
http://medlem.spray.se/mindflaw/hpbimg/quicksp08.jpg
KoZ: the left eye (your right eye) seems to float togheter with the nose, otherwise its nice and expressive.
Jetpack: Nice 30min sp. One suggestion, since I rarley get any time to sit down for more than 20 min a time I continue my sp:s over several times to get them finished itīs hard to get back in same position but one gets better. Anyway when you get a quick one that you feel you got a good structure to, continue it over a couple of "sittings" and do as KoZ wrote put in more values and refine so you get to practise that too if you understand what I mean (sorry bad english).
asbestoshazard: So thats on your mind
jook: Yeah itīs always fun to meet the parents (In my case if its not to long period of time) Keep at it :)
jwo: Oh my God one of those selfdestructive art people :P Looks a little like you are being born.
Silvrain: Nice one different from your other ones if I remember correctly.

I hear you guys, I'll start working on some longer studies after this weekend...
Also, I'm saving my images at 75dpi, and compressing them in the photoshop "Save for Web" function...what does everyone else do? My images run between 20-60k. I'm curious, cause I never notice everyone else's looking like crap, like mine...(with the blurring and the artifacts and whatnot)

Kanimator... recently you have been doing some really nice stuff with this series. I like a lot of your ideas.. creative stuff...
Mindflaw... That one turned out really nice.. I like it...
Wizard of KOZ... Thanks man.. that one shows a lot of emotion.. you seem to really be into that type of thing.. It would be cool to see a new approach to the rendering...

Tweaking out, after a 10-hour produce shift. Reffed off webcam; 10-minute solid oekaki. My hideous green uniform gave everything a creepy, Matrix-green glow. Bonus points if you're Canadian and you can figure out where I work, contest not open to Azzy.
On a side note, what's an event file?
Medium, the absolutely fantastic watercolor brush in Open Canvas 3. Thanks for stoking my ego on the last one, everyone. I worked hard, glad it showed.
jwo: the fingerprints are eerie, the whole thing is disturbingly cool.
jook: very nice sketchbook work, and I particularly like the last one. Your strongpoints are color and looseness, that's for sure.
azzy: the one you didn't post rocked my world, but I loved watching this little 'series' progress. The way you did your eyes... fantastic.
mindflaw: very nice work. the creepy, half-lit eye in the shadows makes the piece.
jetpack: I'm a fan of the thick lines in the shadowed area of your face on both your pieces, and color choice.
kanimator: It's almost like the words are written on a mirror.. it's an interesting effect, the whole thing looks cool. Angst-filled art, imo, is the best to view.
koz: speaking of... damn. I don't recall seeing an SP you've done that isn't dark, with an extreme facial expression. The color, black balance.. very good stuff.
killing.people: excellent lighting, I find myself looking more at the right side of the picture, yeah. I'm really impressed with the lighting job on your last one.

open up your 9 hour masterpiece in opencanvas.. up on the menu bar between filter and view, there's "Event".. you can save and load event files to watch stroke by stroke "playback" of your drawings. if you save one you can post it on here and all of the lucky folks with oc3 can open it up and watch your masterpiece come to life stroke by stroke.

I don't really know what I was doing...I got tired and just stopped drawing. You know how when you're sitting in class and you start to doze off? You just wind up making notes that literally trail off the page? Drawing this felt like that after a while.
jetpack :: I'm a fan of the black weighted lines and vibrant colors, it's a nice style.
Wizard of KOZ :: I have no idea what you're talking about. *COUGH* The colors in that one are amazing...the darkness, the blues and oranges! *swoon*
Mindflaw :: Lovin' the textures of the white. I especially like what this smear is doing:
http://asbestoshazard.com/art/smear.jpg
Something about it...
Kanimator :: The blank and featureless face is frightening on some inner level, I think it's the hollow eye-sockets.
martist :: Very creepy -- it has a nightmarish feel to it, indeed. I've always loved the black/white/red color scheme.
killing.people :: Did you do that in painter? The strange lightening makes the picture very interesting, I like the warm colors in the upper left of your face.
jook :: Good to see you too ^^ And it's ALL about the fun!
Silvrain :: Solids...watercolor...doesn't seem to matter, you always "produce" fine work. *so punny* I'm always impressed with solids, they escape me.

Pencil and watercolor tool in Painter...looking back it is so flat and plain...maybe I should have done -something- to the bg.
fae :: I can never get my mouth to look right either but I like your SP -- particularly the shadows around the nose, mouth and jaw.
JenJen :: I remember when I first started copy-catting manga and anime and all that jazz. It ruined my style completely and I'm still trapped in the influence. It's all about proportions, I think. Your SP looks pretty good -- nice job on the shading in the eyes and ear.
sone_one :: The lighting really brings out the dimensions of your face, it looks fantastic!
Oblio :: Nice and sketchy, it -looks- super quick, I love the bold strokes. It's always nice to see the guides people set down.
Silvrain :: <3
Kanimator :: I'm jealous of your blends and colors -- very nice SP.

hey guys, bleh heres my portrait #29, it was so much fun to do this one. i originally wasnt going to colour it (since i have no idea about how colors work) plus i was just silliying aroung with my cheap watercolours. the 3 portraits have flaws but as i said earlier, this is the most fun ive had in doing my portrait. i will try something liek this again with my next portrait.

My host is still down and to be honest i can just wait till it is up again them post any work i've done, i'm too lethargic to bother setting up another host, it should only be a day or so more... i hope.
so, no work to show but i'll post some comments anyway...
Kapturowski- creepy, looks like a rubber mask.
ladylioness- you are getting more confident certainly. one thing i would suggest though, take a look at the way people like blackhawk create the impression of shape without line. I learned alot from a quick attempts at duplicating the actual marks that people make to represent eyes and noses. oh and maybe try workling on toned paper, that way you can put in the darks and the lights, i like to work like that :-)
asbestos- that last one is great, i love the subtle colour and the little bits of texture really draw attention to the eyes. extend the top of it and put in the top of your head, then print and frame it, good work. as for the BG, maybe you could put in a very pale grey to bring your face forward a bit?
kanimator- i like how you are building up on the one image to create new ones, i'm keen to see where it will end up.
silvrain- i'd have guessed that you weren't into that one, you'll have a tough job from now on after you raised your standard with the OC one, no going back :-p
oblio- fotune city logo.... but i did get it to load once and the line work is cool,
sone_one- cool, very solid, just take care of the size of the eyes though, i think they are a little bit big.
fae- i didnt mention that i really like your SPs, i like the 'messyness' of that one yet the shading is in the right place, nice style. btw, i tried a portrait based on your last 2 posts but it kind of turned into a 'generic' girl, you are more than welcome to see it though, you could even watch the OC event file if you were bored enough :-p
thats all for now, i hope to be posting again soon, and in the mean time, i might do a portrait of someone else on here, that last one was fun :-)
cheers

cold.. sweet man. not sure if it was intentional, but I love how it forces my eye to look at your eye, the blurryness to the left bitch slaps my eye back the right side.. neat effect.
kapturowski... very sweet indeed. I love it. Cool idea and cleanly executed.
LadyLioness... what can I say. I like it. you know there are problems so no need to point them out. glad you enjoyed it...
asbestoshazard... cool. not sure if it really feels flat as you say, but I'll bet that a touch of a second color would really bring a lot out of it, mabey a red-pink or a orange or something.. good job though.
Kanimator... cool man, getting more chipper eh?
Silvrain... escellent values.. I think it could use some cleaner brush strokes, but like you said, good for something you didnt feel like doing, I cant tell you felt that way by looking at it...
Oblio... nice sketch...
sone_one... nice and clean execution. looks solid. Keep at it...
JenJen.. dont think you should be so hard on your self. keep at it. Just watch the proportins. Pay attention to the sizes and placement of each feature compared to the other features.. For instance: the mouth edges end around straight down from the center of the eyes.. keep at it...
fae.. not as bad as you say it is. I'll trade you faces though, I have always wanted to paint long flowing hair on myself, my hair is boring to paint... Wish I had a solution to your problem with painting lips but I suck at it as well... sorry...

LadyLioness :: It's always good to experiment and play with new mediums and techniques. I agree with Ni* -- the confidence is coming out. It would be great to see you try to use color to create shadow and weight in your SPs.
kapturowski :: Skeletor! or Darkman! or...yeah. It looks rad, I love the layered effect that you have in your medium.
Cold :: Your portrait reminds me of those feline face warps -- I like the shading and highlights.
jook :: Your eyes on that one! That blue is enchanting -- and I love the way you've drawn/colored them. My favorite part of that piece by far.
fae :: Nice play with the brush -- I like your choice of colors, too. I always wished I looked -more- asian in mine XD
bhuddistmonk :: Nice to see more than just a head shot, I always like to see people incorporate more of their bodies in -- this seems especially difficult for those using mirrors. Good job.

Hi
Didinīt really have time to do this one but couldnīt resist practice planes since I really need it. So here is a quick one, only had a female wooden manikin so I go Ying Yang on you all. did the body to wide but the arms are really that long in reality, are they supposed to be that long?
Title: Iīm a model
http://medlem.spray.se/mindflaw/hpbimg/quicksp09.jpg
Comment: If beeing a model means having a stick up ones -ss I donīt wanna be a model
Kanimator: Nice series and oh a turning point cool anyways I like the way you use oepn and closed eyes troughout your pics donīt know if you have that intention in the one where you were really little but heh if you should have closed eyes in that one the meaning would have turned out Iīm really little but I donīt see it :)
Jetpack: I scan at 75 dpi and use the save for web-function, but I hate walking 30 min to college just to be able to scan. Yeah and if you scan ( If decide to go traditional) decide size when you scan cause when I change size with ps it doesnīt get as good as when you do it with the scanner.
Martist: wheres the realistic one?
Killing.people: Must agree with everyone else cool lightning.
Jook: About your first one: Heve you been drinking again? lol anyway the best reason to draw and paint. Your last one reminds vaugely of hammered copper thats cool. When do I see a sp where you have long hair? (You donīt need to get long hair just paint it) Thanks for the nice comment.
Silvrain: thanks for the positive comment I thought it would turn out to cliché. Anyway about your profile did you use mirror since I`ve been trying that but I just canīt and my eyes start to hurt. So plz share your secrets :)
asbestoshazard: Thanks for the coments, it was about the only thing I got the way I wanted. If you decide to try itīs just some ink diluted with water and with just a little in the brush apply it quickly, that way you use the white of the paper.
Keep going and
I didn't feel like I could draw tonight
the biggest problem with feelings is that they seldom tell the truth.
Ladylioness: Yeah experiment experiment experiment with stuff. I expect you to do that more now, ok.
kapturowski:
Cold: well from now on it wonīt be a fluke hm compositon by blurryness. Nice one.
Fae: If you dislike the sp:s your doing now, man the ones you like must be something out of the world. In other words I like the ones your doing now, anyway be happy that you see the flaws if you didnīt you wouldnīt improve and thats a bad thing cause then you would be lost, but perhaps satisfied, like be happy everytime you find a flaw, like me mindflaw the only dude in town that gets happy when he finds out heīs doing stupid things, well something like that perhaps eh.
Bhuddistmonk: Nice ones. I got one suggestion get a woodboard (sorry donīt know the english word) then you get more stability, when drawing.
JenJEn: Syfta mera så får du proportionerna bättre. Sorry for the swedish anyway good one, I expect you to post more in this section ok.
Sone_one: great work yourself too.
Oblio: with all the quick line creating motion it seems like your hitting yourself :) When are we going to see a more finished one?
Mindflaw: Learn how to write shorter comments (stole that way of comment from Jook muhaha)
Edit: Ni* If you donīt get your site up within the next day I could host some of your sp if you want cause I want to see your latest ones, just pm me.

Time for some crits and comments. Sorry I haven't contributed in a while.
JenJen: Hope you don't mind, did some quick tweaks to give you an idea of why it looks off. Other than the little proportional/perspective issues, it's a pretty nice drawing. :)
http://www.studiodimensions.com/Kelsey/TempandPost/selfportrait3crit.jpg
Mindflaw: That's an interesting idea, although it would be nice to see a larger head drawing with that plane concept. Great way to train your mind to think in three dimensions.
Silvrain: As always, really keen portrait. You look very vampirish.:evilbat: Now I have to do a vampirish SP. I'm curious, do you usually draw from photos, a mirror, or your head? This one must be photo, no?
asbestoshazard: Interesting use of the watercolor brush. This one seems a bit less proportionally acurate than your previous SPs. Has alot of energy, though. The one before it is excelent. I really love the texture and the colors.
bhuddistmonk: Way to do a full body SP. You could benifit by trying to use longer strokes in your drawings. Your stuff is getting better and better, keep it up.
fae: Love the texture in this one. You may be loosing a bit of accuracy in each SP, but I can definately tell what you look like, between all of them.
jook: Looks almost like you modelled it with clay. Man, you have improved so much in the past few months... Keep em comin :)

My...head looks fat.
Silvrain :: You have the perfect nose -- but more importantly: OMG Azzy SUCKS??? Well! You're in for a good lashing...*plots something devious*
Mindflaw :: I got quite the kick out the seeing little model and your tiny head...I have one one my TV in some rude-ish position right now. XD
JenJen :: The style you used to color and the way you've drawn your nose really shows that anime influence. I found the transition from pencil to wacom really difficult, too -- your eye isn't looking at your hand anymore!! OMGWTF?! But yes, it is so fun once you get the hang of it.
Ni* :: The line work in this reminds me of something -- I can't put my finger on it. I want to say Giger but that's not quite it...Hmm, hopefully it will come to me. Otherwise, I love it.
fae :: No, no...I'm not asian, not fully anyways. I'm a healthy mix of all kinds of blood with a very muddled heritage. I just wish that the little Chinese that's in me showed through a little more. I love the effect in your SP, the angle is great and the eyes catch my attention with that blue eyemakeup.

Hi just some comments hopefully get some time to draw a sp this weekend
Jenjen: take extras time to sight it will improve your result if you want to do a realistic style, thats my experience anyway.
EDIT: Yes and about scanning to get some of the lighter shading too you probably could go "avancerat" then "justera exponering" to get the pic right it has worked for me some of the times, but Iīll guess you mostly is going to use your wacom-tablet now.
Kanimator: I agree, allthough the next one wont be one with planes but imo a humorous spinoff for shallow people (like me) hopefully no one takes any offense, but the next after that will be one with planes. Looking forward to your serious SP action.
NI*: the offer was purely selfish. Like the lines in the first sp.
fae: since I regard most of the sp:s in this thread as practice and not as finished pieces Iīll take in consideration the amount of time spent doing the sp, if time is stated as in your ones and considered the amount of time you spent on those sp I wont take back my positive comments :) And one more thing I like your latest one too, regarding tha feeling to it, but not the fact that you hide your mouth that you say you have to practice doing hm.
Asbestoshazard: You gave a little more information than I wanted to hear. lol
Jens: Nice to see that you have started to shade in order to "define" your sp.
fae
April 7th, 2004, 07:09 PM
mindflaw: sure - i think they're practice too! i haven't spend over an hour and a half on any of them i think... but still - how accurate isn't just speed - i can't dismiss the fact that something was off and not portrayed correctly just 'cause it was fast... :) yes, i know... i didn't cover it up b/c i didn't wanna work on it... i did work on it and just got so fed up, but i was liking kinda how this one was going, so i didn't wanna completely leave it destroyed...
jens: nice job on the eyes
asbestoshazard: hehe looks like your colorscheme is following silverain's a bit. yes and yours have some anime influence in them too hehe. maybe adding a bit of shading under the hair (where the hair and forehead meet) would help a bit =)
Ni*: neat color transition between blue and red
jenjen: hmm... if you practice more it'll become easier drawing directly =) i think (but i don't know for sure) a lot of these SPs are done directly =)

toinjoints: Welcome to the fold! Your warbly lines are curious, I like em. Nice SP, let's see some color or tone.
jetpack42: Your color choices aren't inherently horrible, you just need to spend more time making more concious decisions on where and why the colors and values go where they go. Confidence and knowledge goes a long, long way in making an image look nice.
skank: A bit scribbly, but interesing non the less. Be cool to see some 3/4 portraits from you. No more head on!
Sheldon: Be careful with your values. Your highlight color is a different tone, but appears to be the same value, if not a darker value than the midtone. Also, it's interesting to see vector stuff, but you don't seem to be working the vectore aspect for what it's good for. You could probably get better results using the solid brush style brushes in Photoshop.

I feel like I'm just degrading here...and like I don't have the energy to try. This is usually an indication that it's time to study.
Kanimator :: Your style on the last couple is awesome. I want to...steal...it.
Ni* :: Colors and lighting look so good -- especially that soft blue.
Jens :: Nice job on the shading on the eyes and nose.
Sheldon :: Vectors are difficult to work with effectively...at least, they always have been for me. I like the choice of colors you used.
Skank :: The speed and energy just burst out of that one. Hooray for sparse coloring!
jetpack42 :: "WARNING: COLORING LIKE ME CAN ONLY CAUSE ARTISTIC DEGRIDATION." LMAO...I'm jealous of anyone who can use color without fear.
toinjoints :: It's nice to see the progress on the sketch to the colored version -- the coloring suits the sketch, too.
king :: Graph paper was always my favorite to doodle on...it's like Mr. T!! Is your hair really like that 'cause it's rad.

no pic today, i've been slacking off a bit in the past couple of days but been out on my bike so i'm smiling...
asbestos- your portraits are getting stronger but i always see that you leave a space between the eyes, your eyes may be quite wide on your face but i still feel like you need some shading or tone on the inside of the eye. on most peoples faces this is a really interresting mix of colours, often being a purple or blue, maybe even green tone. for me, this is the area that i keep pushing darker because i find it helps to set the plane of the eyes. i think if you got that area sussed and put some sharper lines in to defing the hard edges (which i know you can do if you can draw with a biro) then your SPs wopuld really leap forward.
just a though after looking at your last few :-)
toinloin- that sketch is fantastic, take a look at fredflickstone's portrait tutorials and give that the shading and time it deserves, your colour one lets it down a bit i think, no offence meant, but i think it looks a bit more like colouring in rather that painting form, know what i mean?
king- english patient? how obscure :-p try a bigger one next time. i like the texture in that one, welcome :-)
jetpack- try to find the portrait panting tutorial on here, it explains alot about colour theory and it really clears things up, it doesn't make it easy by any means, i read it and i'm clearly struggling, but i helps to give you a direction of practice... i'll try to find you the link.
i have to sleep now, lots of frech air and hard work + beer and food = sleeeepy

http://img3.photobucket.com/albums/v12/jetpack42/sp11.jpg
Ni*- If you could give me a link to what you are talking about that would be great. I spent about 30 minutes looking for a portrait tutorial that dealt with color, with not really any success...
asbestos- laugh all you want...you've been warned. I agree with what Ni* said too...the eyes do always look too far apart. I can see some structural improvements over the last few, but you do need to push it even further in the eye regions.
king- vertically speaking, your eyeballs are massive. Do you have elf ears in real life? Working so small like that is hard to control...but you handled the mohawk shading like a pro...
tionjoints- the skin and shirt is so soft, and the hair is so dark. I feel like it needs some middleground to tie it all in. I could be very wrong though.
Kanimator- Yeah, like everything else associated with art, I must fail 100 times before I begin to succeed. I'll just get back on the horse.....or....I could just DIG UP NC WYETH AND EAT HIS BRAIN!!!!:chainsaw:

Hi no sp today but Iīll post one tomorrow
Kanimator: Your last one lets my mind wander in others directions than what I think was your first intention, that makes me like it more than your previous.
Fae: Yes I know, I do just like you.
Skank: Your shading makes you nose, mouth, chin "area" come out thus being more "catlike" and with the beard and hair colour I make associations to lions. :)
Jetpack: this links deals with colour theory and will help you you with your sp:s and everything else you want to paint in colour so if you not already read them do it
these ones by fredflickstone:
colour theory part I (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?threadid=17837)
colour theory part II (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9505)
some notes on colour theory only text (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9504)
this one by Prometheus|ANJ will help too
speculars... (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15745)
the thread miner_with progress steps was good but I only got red x:s today.
Toinjoints: even if your coloured one wasnīt painter like at least it didnīt kill the lines which is a part of the feeling but itīs all about what style you want, but anyway hope to see a great painterlike coloured from you.
Asbestoshazard: I sometimes get the feeling that you draw to much "theory" and focus to little on draw what you observe and analyse so to speak, but thats only a feeling and I might be totally wrong. Anyway try draw sp:s where you donīt look at the paper/screen just at your head, just a quick one or two before starting to paint for real. That actually works thats my experience anyway.
sheldon and king: keep going.

Kanimator: Well practice is essential too, and you got a nice sp there.
toinjoints: So going in to more shade work I guess, keep going.
King: I try to give some good tips about the eyes, donīt forget to draw the eye covets you know the fleshy thing nearest to the nose, donīt forget to draw or in this case "save out" some highlights in the eyes they will be more alive then. Donīt draw the entire circle of the iris it looks like you stare a lot then, the eyelids often hide some of the iris.
Take your time to really observe what your eyes etc really looks like. hope this will be of some help.

More frustration for me. I don't get what is going on in my head with these things. I think this SP evolved 6 different times over a good 7 hours, but still it is pure shit in my eyes. I eventually settled for this, but it's heckling back at me for giving up, I don't like it.
http://images.snitzerart.com/spod/spod264.jpg
toinjoints - Thanks. These look like a caricature version of what I remember of you. Good work though, keep pushing them, I'd like to see some more value work in them possibly.
Kanimator - I've been silently watching your series, I've been digging them, a real good progression. The only thing that bugs me about this one is the eyes, they seem too bright overall, almost flattens them to me, but the rest of the portrait is very nice. Keep it up, whether you feel the juices or not.
Ni - Red X's :(
King - Thanks. This SP is freaking me out, feels like it's trying to rip me apart with it's eyes :D. Be careful of what your observing, your proportions are off and the eyes need some work. Keep it up though man, good to have you here.
Wazzo - You don't know the half of it, every SP is a struggle, some just happen to be an easier struggle than others. That was actually one of the things that Andrew Jones and Kevin Llewelyn critiqued me on at the workshop was that I don't finish, and now that everyone is pointing it out I see it myself and I think it even added more pressure in my mind. I haven't been able to see straight on the last couple of SP's.
I like the light pattern in this one on the face and jacket, the tree in the background doesn't do it for me though, it feels like it's trying to pull attention to it instead of being part of the background, my eye keeps bouncing to it. Good work overall though.

The idea was just a spinoff from the blood cult, I wish I could take creds for the idea.
Killing.people: thanks
Asbestoshazard, jook, silvrain amongst others: Eastern is over get your faces back here....OK... :)
King:The ear seems to be to small, unless the hair cover a part of the ear. You could try to do pencilsketch before you paint where you really concentrate on the proportions and those kind of things, then when you paint you could concentrate on the strokes and those kind of things and still nail the structure and proportion, erasing the lines can somtimes be difficult, so make the sketch as light as possible.
Blackhawk: Man itīs the struggle that makes it fun to do if it were easy it would be boring, sorry to state what you already know by heart.

here is a bunch of scribbles, i'm still trying to improve my linework...

king, thanks for the compliment, it was blackhawk's idea, i just dropped it into one of my own SPs. as a change of pace i tried to draw you based on your work, you were the last person to post :-p but it ended up looking like me with a beard.
drawing other people based on thier own drawings is a good laugh actually, i think i'll do it again :-)
jook, nice work, the structure of your SPs has improved loads of late, take care of the nose though, it is making the face look like it is straight on..
ladylioness, much better shading, what happened to the charcoal ones you were going to do? and the one on card? :-p
kanimator, nice line work as ever, i like how you are putting yourself in environments.
wizard of koz, very nice, the hand could use a little definition, but it almost looks like a spider which would have been cool also...

toinjoints: This one is really good! Great attention to detail, and the highlights in your eyes really makes it come alive! Good job!
Ladylioness: Looks, good, but the right side of your face (your right :) ) looks a bit flat. There are usually a bit of light on the dark side of your face as well :) Also your left cheekbone looks a little high.

Just a quick note while i'm still at the office.
You guys are realy cool.
Ladylionese - try to flipe your drawing when you're done. Mirror Horizontaly and watch - then mirror it verticaly - i'm sure you'll notice a lot of things you would like to fix.
You seem to draw at a table and that is why from where you stant it looks ok but when you scan it (or if you look right from above your drawing) the perspective will work agains you.
I will post some SP's soon. I have done a few with my brother - it was a great time to share the mirror with Andrew.
BH - C.O.L.O.R. - you will NOT receive any comments on B&W portraits.
Please, don't reply to BLACKHAWK unless it's a color SP. Let's push this guy - he needs our help it seems.

Wow it has been a couple of weeks since i went to my newsprint pad... sorry for not being here like i have been in the past. I feel terrible i sort of took a mini vacation and did alot of self reflection and analized my life. many things going on right now in my life and i have been down...:( but now i feel much better and i wanted to do somehting i never done before. so i decided to try and to an oil sp. it is pretty hard since my room is kind of dark as is so the colours come out dark but i am going to rty and fix that soon befor ei finish it which wont before a while.
The first one is a real quick sketch, second is a longer 15 -20 minute sketch before i drew it on the canvas.
http://img18.photobucket.com/albums/v53/12jesse/Painting/Picture_001.jpg
This is most of the darks and midtones, really rough i just wanted to get an idea of how they work together. sorry for the shitty quality but i am not sure how to take digi pics when it is wet. 2 hours
http://img18.photobucket.com/albums/v53/12jesse/Painting/sp_oil.jpg
Comments and Crits are very welcome since this is my first attempt with oils, i am sort of lost but that is half of the fun i guess :D
- CRITS -
jook - you have a couple really good ones htis month you are really getting to understand you face much better, try not to get to comfortable with your face. investigation is what helps make things interesting, other wise you become photo-copy machine. keep going :D
BH - i pledge i will only comment on sp's doen in colour :D hmm that last one looks good but maybe you should have some cooler colours in there too.
Kanimator - your last one is my absolute favorite of all of your sp's!! tell me about please!
wazzo - hmmmm very curious i must say :D
ni - i really like that you are exploring with your sp's. it seems you have a very painterly technique sometimes. maybe if you try to be more linear or analytical it will spice things up for you sometimes so it doesn't get stale. look'n good though :D
cwec03 - that is great but i would try to control the strokes more. try to feel the form and plaace strokes where you want not where the pencil wants.
NTeRN - looking good! try not to make a line when all the time some times it can really help, but i think for the most part on your last one you could of used tones to create the illusion of line. "imo" that would of been more effective with this piece. great work! keep it up!
dCepT - cool being loose is fun! i like to do quick sketchs with my ball point too, just don't forget to try all kinds of tools.
toinjoints - welcome! sorry it is late... great work i like your pencils. do you always do close veiws? are these from a mirror or photograph?
LadyLioness - good work, they are looking better!
king - yours are so playful it is great to have them here! :D
evillair - that is just nuts!!! :p
Wizard of KOZ - your style is so unique. yeah breaking out od your comfort zone is hard to do sometimes, but is sucha learning expeirence too! DO IT! DO IT NOW! peer pressure! :D
jens - you seem to understand that side of your face really well. maybe you should try a different pose one that makes you think well how do i make this look like that. but when you are doing it try not to think like that all... does that make sense :D
sorry if i missed anyone i apologize. great work everyone!
-Jesse
p.s. - kanimator yours has real sense of light!!! that is what i really like about it. I hope i can get that on mine......

Here's one I made today. There are a lot of errors, I know, but do point them out, maybe you guys see more than I do.
http://img35.photobucket.com/albums/v106/dCepT/SPPencil.jpg
Jens: Nicely done! Looks like you nailed the proportions pretty damn well!
Ladylioness: apart from your own comments; I've found that if I block in the major planes of my face as well as using helplines, I get the shape more correct, i.e. I avoid slanting and such. Keep 'em coming, though! Your constantly improving!
jmac: Looks cool! I should do one with traditional paint as well! Is the eye closest to us in the painting placed lower than in the sketch?
J.Mac
April 22nd, 2004, 08:57 AM
dCept - yeah in my original sketch the eyes and the whole tilt of my head was lower, but it was more difficult to hold and draw so i chaged it a little since i am doing it from a mirror. even though i like the original poses better. Hmm also the way i took the digi-pic might have distorted the image alittle since i didn't use a tripod and such, and the painting isn't a 100% horizontal in the pic too. I do agree that the eye seems to be lower than it should... i will have to fix that grrr

A few comments quickly...
kanimator- the lines are disappearing and you are getting looser, very nice.
ladylioness- huge improvement, rub out the writing on that one and fill in the other side. working into the shading would give the face depth and volume too, its amazing how dark you can get pencils to go...
jens- good pencil drawing, it still looks a little like your eyes are too high but it may be that you are not putting quite enough perspective on the nose and mouth, see what i mean?
dcept- good work, as for mistakes i think only the lower part of the face is a little too short and the white side of the face needs to be rounded a little, is that charcoal or pencil?
i'm going back to basic drawing and trying to learn some anatomy so i may slow down a bit with these, but it means i get to sit in the museum and draw people :-)

I havent been here in a while... there has been some good stuff I have been missing out on. Time to get back into the action a bit dammit...
http://img3.photobucket.com/albums/v13/jook13/numero_93.jpg
killing.people... THat looks a lot different than your others for some reason. For some reason it gives me the impression of a death-metal-head.
Hazart.. That turned out pretty nice for no ref, though I think you should use some ref. Last time I was at walmart I saw a mirror on sale for like 5 bucks. Dont go so dark on the outline of the lips, kinda looks more cartoonish than the rest of the face. Any background would be better than a white one, even if it is just a very light shade of grey. I remember reading that you should try to lay down a solid color on your background before painting, even if you dont notice it, that color will show through at least a little bit and white usally detracts from the colors. At lesast I think thats what goes on, correct me if I am wrong somebody. Hope this helps some..
Kanimator.. Holy mother of natural media! That looks fantastic. I wanna do some natural now, or at least later. Turned out very nice buddy, I really like the way the blue turned out on the face...
Ni*... Nice start. I like the eyes on it.
Oblio... That one is my fav., that I have seen from you, very nice values.
Koz... Turned out nice. The lips are off perspective. Again, good mood.
Jens... Each one of yours amazes me. These are so good and confident looking. Thumbs up, like way up.
Blackhawk... That one is crazy looking, that droopy eye smacks me in the face.
requiem... Awesome. Looks like its traditional. I like that.
dCepT... Looks nice. If you took the mouth, nose, and eyes and mooved everything up a notch or so, it would look close to perfect. At least I think.
LadyLioness... Your progress is getting me all giddy inside. It is wonderful to see such a thing...
J.Mac, that painting is really expressive. I like the way it turned out man...

jook: I think you're right. I'll make another one with this in mind :) Your last looks really good, but I think the left side (our left side) of your face should be more narrow. I get the feeling that your face doesn't round off backwards, but rather flattens out.
evolve: Your picture kinda freaked me out... in a good way... I think... enough rambling already! :D I liked the pencil work better. The colored one is good, but it looks flatter. Especially around the mouth-area.

Excellent stuff guys.
Oblio: Damn, I havn't seen your stuff in quite a bit. Wow you're getting pretty damn good.
Ni*: Looks like a good start, I would have liked to have seen this one more fleshed out.
Kanimator: Way to rock the natural media. I dunno if it was intentional but your eyes look large, and the red makes you look very sick (a cool element to the pic IMO). However I dunno if that was your intention. Keep it up.
Hazart: Looks good but the lack of ref shows, I reccomend using a pic or a mirror. It'll do you a wealth of good as far as color, light, and shadow are concerned.
killing.people: The fuzzy unfinished looks is pretty cool, but your head looks rather large in that pic and very egg shaped too. Your ears look a little too large as well.
jook: Wow, probaly your best so far. Your eyes, and mouth look too large though and sytlized. Not nessicarily a bad thing but somthing to be aware of.
evolve: Interesting pic, I would recommend spending more time to define your shadow areas. I can't say I'm a fan of your Photoshop treatment though.
Jens: Very cool, I really dig this one, though stylized esp. the nose (I'm assuming). I thinke the simplicity of it all really works, and I like the definition of the eyes.
Keep on rocking everyone!
