I have an art project that I am planning over the long term. It should be mentioned that I am not that much of an artist (but I have done some minor work in digital), and this is definitely something I need to acquire some skills in.

The idea that I have basically involves creating art that combines a historical event in paint with its description written around it.

Two examples of work that could be similar: http://www.the-gallery-of-china.com/chinese-art-painting-Mi4122.jpg and IMG]http://min.us/mvb0qLp[/IMG].

The first one would just need more writing on it, and the second is an alternative form.

I should note that I am thinking about this in the context of a custom world, even creating a special script/language for the work. Currently, I am thinking about runes because I appreciate their appearance, so I am basing some of the script off of them.

Besides acquiring some of the skills for this, one of the things I want to look into are the many options available for painting the scenes on. I was thinking of doing the runes in a sort of older ink method (need to research specific ones), and then I sort of like the appearance of papyrus (found a site which purports to sell it), and canvas looks interesting. An alternative material is this board that could be done up in a style similar to the second image: http://shop.art-boards.com/category.sc;jsessionid=664A5CDA0F04F4960D58D3A4BAE D22BA.qscstrfrnt02?categoryId=36

The most realistic thing I can see is learning some very basic stuff about painting in the near future, and a pen/pencil can be a powerful tool to conceptualize (which of course I would post anything that comes from my hand :-).

Any ideas of the sort of materials/methods I should look into?
