P.O.W.! Challenge 45
Deadline: Sunday, November 21, 2010, 11:59 pm anywhere in the world.
Topic: Talking to Girlz/Guyz...
This topic was inspired by the pathetic thread in the lounge, and I'm surprised we haven't done something with this earlier. You know the routine--pick-ups, sweaty palms, serious discussions, dating/married, whatever... The implications for comic ideas run the gamut from sweet-and-tender to World War III, and any age for the characters is fair game. And think for a second about talking with your own "other half" over the years before you reject this as not worth playing with...you might be surprised by what you come up with.
You can interpret the art any way you wish, and the more creatively, the better. Any media. B&W or Color. We're also going to stick with the (almost) three-week Challenge period for a while because it seems to be giving people a bit more time to play.
You can present your solution as a minimum of TWO to a TENTATIVE maximum of SIX pages which adhere to standard comic specs as below...and, yes, you can have the first or last (or both) as a splash page if you want. You can go to additional pages without asking if you have a decent idea that requires it--just don't get too extreme on page counts.
REMEMBER: You don't have to have a complete comic to qualify for polling--if you're idea requires six pages or so, go for it, but if you realize you're running out of time, try to get at least TWO finished by the deadline. That's all you need to qualify.
Standard Comic Book Size:
--Trim size: 6 5/8" x 10 1/4"
--Live art area: 6" x 9"
--Bleed size before trimming: 6 7/8" x 10 1/2" (1/8" in all directions)
This thread will be the place you ask questions on this challenge, trash talk, post WIPs and post your final art. See the READ THIS FIRST thread for all specs.
Good luck.
Again, this one is three weeks rather than the usual two weeks to see if it will allow more participation or just cause a lot more procrastination.
P.O.W.! Challenge 46 will be posted on Sunday Midnight, November 21, 2010.
************************************************** ***
A little note here for all of you who have supported the P.O.W.! Challenges...thankyewthankyewthankyew...
Just a reminder--those of you who didn't get a chance to finish exactly the way you wanted to, or ran into deadline problems, remember there is a sticky section where you can post your stuff when you do get it up to speed.

At first I thought you were gonna make a 'having sex in public'-topic. I guess I'm relieved... :P

At first I thought you were gonna make a 'having sex in public'-topic. I guess I'm relieved... :P
And I'm a little saddened. Why talk when you can get to it?

Stellar stuff Bhanu, keep it coming.
However, due to upcoming examination in college and an extended work related project I will have to bow out of this POW!. I really wanted to compete this time around, though. The topic can be interpreted in so many ways. Well, there's always next time I suppose.
I would like to know whether the poll for Monster Mash is going to be up anytime soon. Or whether it is going to be up at all.

I wonder too... There are several POWs that haven't gotten a poll yet... What's the cat doing? Maybe there's a mean dog watching the poll option...

I posted a note on the late polls, in case anyone is curious. All the polls are prepped and being put up this afternoon.
Annnnd...I might get into this one if I can find time--have about 10 ideas, so I might just do simple art...

Bhanu - Ace man. I looked through your bold a while back, its ace. Very neet style and colours. Its cool man, will check out later.
My idea starts off with the guy and girl not speaking. Not sure whether its on topic, but Im joking around with how boys and girls fight over stupid shit and how they behave because they can't actually have a conversation sometimes.
Y'know, telling the girl friend her mum has a beard. etc.

Aw crap, the deadline is this Sunday? Somehow I lost two weeks to Nanowrimo.
Anyway! Good entries so far!
@bhanu - wow, strong start! I like both the painted bit and the comic. Looking forward to seeing where this one goes.
@UCT - neat style! A bit heavy on the whitespace, it feels like there ought to be something in the bottom left.
Mine's just this weird little idea. Gonna have to see how it goes.

hope i'll finish in time i'm trying to take a minimalistic approach. focus on solid line work some new competition reminded me sometime less is more .....becuase let's face it i'm an impulsive colorer....so this time around i'm going to tone it down.......

Woo colours! I love colours.
@j.s. sabastian - Looks good for a start! My two main quibbles would be the lady's feet (in both pages the curled up ones look funny) and the guy's face in the 1st page, 2nd small panel. It seems different in proportion to the one preceding it. On the next page it's obvious his face is boiling or something but in this small panel it's not obvious whether his face is supposed to still be normal or not.

Hey vineris, great start! I really like the colours, and the idea (at least till now).
My crit would be on panel 4. In the earlier panels, you've shown the right side of the girl as an open room. While the left side was never shown. Now here, in panel 4, the bg looks like you've dropped a screen or window to her right (which till now had an open room). Maybe you had no intention of the bg to look solid, but the plane near their feet, and the screen-like block sure makes it look that way.
I don't know why, but it's disturbing me a little.
Other than that, absolutely great work. Loving every bit of it.

Wanted to do something pretty simple for my first panels, and oh god you realise all the pitfalls you have. Heres the first draft.

Hey j.s. sabastian, it's good that you've gone for the line art approach. It suits you well. :)
Anyway, you still have a few perspective issues you should deal here. I thought pictures speak more than words, so did a bit of drawing over your images. Hope you don't mind.
I took panel 1 from page 1 as an example. The perspective looks quite wonky here.
If we try to arrive at a horizon from the armrests of the chair, then we get the horizon at:
http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc180/vritraforever/01.jpg
From here, if we try to measure the height of the man standing in the foreground, then we get this, say, Height 'A':
http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc180/vritraforever/02.jpg
So, if we try to measure the height of a person standing where the woman is sitting, we arrive at something different from the proportions you've put in. Of course, we usually consider a woman to be shorter than a man, but considering the fact that she's on an elevated plane, I am approximating the whole affair. As you can see, the height when she should be standing is already less than the height you've drawn her sitting.
http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc180/vritraforever/03.jpg
Of course, you can fix this by either fixing the figures, or measuring the perspective keeping the figures as they are, and changing everything around them.
If the whole perspective and proportion issue is still unclear to you, have a look at this page by Andrew Loomis. It's a life-saver.

If you still have any questions, feel free to ask.

Hey j.s. sabastian, no problem, the pages are looking sweet as they are. As far as technical issues and such is concerned, those things are easily achievable. What matters more is how you're approaching your work.
So, yes, my nitpick was just that - a nitpick. Don't worry about it, keep the pages coming. Looking forward to 'em.

Ta da! They both could have used a little more polish & slightly better execution, but here's a 2 pager! I can't believe I have one done, I actually broke into a sweat there. I'm in an ambivalent mood towards panel borders right now, so I left them a little ragged. I like it though, it's kind of organic-ey looking.
I think my hand lettering is a bit better. I did some calligraphy over a decade ago, but you wouldn't even think that. At least it's neatish. Also, my ellipse tool is missing so I had to improv balloons with a circular template. Yeah, you can also tell I'm out of practise doing that, too. :)

Heres what I've finished up with, not happy with a lot of things, should of definitely planned the robot out properly, polished it up properly. I don't mind if its not considered good enough for polling, just happy I've learnt what I'm really shit at and now I know what to work on cheers. :).

Dilated - I think that "She's even got 5mm spacing" is one of the best lines I have ever read. Hilarious.
C'Mon guys, I'm stoked to see what you got! I especially want to see UCT's, that really looked like it was going somewhere. :)

Man, everybody planned something for this weekend. I ended up having to finish the inking and colouring in the last 3 hours. It would have been nice to add something more in the way of environment and deal with that window properly but as it stands I had to leave that sucker in there.
Next time, Gadget. Next time.

Alright, Nice work everybody. I'm prepping for poll right now. New Challenge up in about 30 minutes. It's a little weird, but it's got a month on it to allow for the holidays.
