View Full Version : Printing and framing high quality digital images?

hi everyone,

I'm sort of clueless regarding printing and framing.

I've got a color digital image at 300 dpi. The image is at an irregular size (6.91x 8.893 inch).

I want to print and frame it for a friend, and I want it to look pro. I want him to see it and say 'holy shit!':jawdrop:

Basically, I'd appreciate some ideas on what my best options are (both traditional and original) and how I might go about this. Some of my main concerns are 1) are there some real good online sites for printing? 2) what do you do when your image is an irregular size and you don't want to crop it? 3) are there any really cool, unique ways you like to frame/present your art?

Thank you!

I was going to say try stretched canvas with a wrapped image, which could negate the need for cropping, but I think your image is too small for that. It would look odd and furthermore I think most sites start at 8" - 12" as minimums for canvas. You could try lowering the DPI if it would stand that, most painterly images would be OK at 200 or 250. Other than that there are numerous different giclee options but you'd need to ask a printer about the differences, I don't have a clue, I've only ever printed to canvas.

I suggest you get it printed and plaque mounted. It has the 'wow' effect, but doesn't look stupid at a small size. You can also get them with different coloured borders. I'm partial to the gold, which sets off most paintings nicely.

Also, in the future it wouldn't hurt to work higher res if you think you might print it. I like to work about 20" on the long dimension (or 6000 pixels).

As for framing, I'm pretty clueless.

plaque mounting ... great!

plus, did you draw that dog? that's a pretty badass drawing of a dog.
