Chaos glad to see you back.
I'm in! You know I draw everything if you just put "steampunk" before the topic title...
I'll put so much steam in this environment that you won't be able to see the train station.

looking good every one!
having a hard time with this one... maybe I will finish it in time, maybe not.
zimfin: the stair is looking a little bit like a ramp (firstthing I noticed) the rest of the painting looks awesome!
thescala
October 14th, 2010, 04:15 PM
Ill have to agree. My biggest gripe with the stairs is that, in real life, there is randomness in things like this. Stairs are not perfectly kept, straight pattern and without any cracks or imperfections. Try adding some dirt or randomness to the stairs.
Also, I don't know how this would screw with your layers, but the architecture for the ceiling in the BG looks too plain. It looks like it's metal, so maybe if there were some reflective parts to it. It might also be cool if you made some of the sections of the ceiling stained glass.
zimfin
October 15th, 2010, 08:04 AM
Thanks Mubanga and thescala! You are right about the stairs and bg.
I need to work on them. Originally you were supposed to be able to see through the steps and that dark diagonal area behind the robot was supposed to be the bottom of the landing. I then realized that this did not work in perspective with the people on it so I thought it could be used as a shadow instead. Unfortunately that is adding to the ramp effect. I will work on it and probably try the stained window idea. Nice one!
Thanks!

Good to see you on track. I hope you are fine.
matt kohr
Awesome. Wonderful mood and rendering.
zimfin
I like your picture. Very fine details. The light is coming fine. Feels harmonic. Only crit is the ellipses on the train and headlight.
Vitrubius
Wonderful sketch. I like the stem technology mixed with the futuristic big scale tech. Its not only railway station with stem trains, Its a steampunk train station
michaelloves
You got the light playing in the stem very good. Perhaps dampen the bridge over the track. To get it more in the distance.
dsmhero
Good start. Be careful to have the ellipsis right on the wheels.

glad that EOW is back, to bad i only realised it today, i've been doing lot of enviro sketches from sight so next round i'm probably in. and all the topics are usually awesome here.
nice paintings going on, matt khors beeing my fav so far. awesome man.
vitrubius, your sketch has a lot of potential, looking forward to see the progress.
zimfin, i like yours, maybe the train seems a little bit compressed, but is ok spit of that. i would also leave the robot and the lady upstairs more visible, as they are in the b/w version of the painting. because they have a strong pose and therefore they add dynamic to the image.
JenJager, looking good so far, like the crazy guy on the left side and the whole "in a rush" feeling

This turned out pretty sloppy, and not very steampunk-y, and not very focused on the station. :\

Great topic and great entries. Too bad I noticed this one too late. Still wanted to give it a try so here's a dirty sketch of something I might not be able to finish in time. Don't mind the terrible perspective errors, especially on the windows. :)

Zimfin, I can't help but think that the front ellipse on the train is too tall. it doesn't look circular. Everything else looks great.
michaelloves, Lots of great atmosphere but light on details. Mood and feel of a scene are important, but IMHO if it's to be concept art you need a little more information on how that environment is built, what materials are used, what the individual areas look like when not obscured by steam. Keep in mind that if you were designing and environment on a professional basis, some poor modeler would have to try to make a level out of that image :)

Thanks! It does not have to be completely circular, does it? It looked really elliptical at one point and I altered it but now I am pretty happy with it. It will just have to be a slightly elliptical steam train for now. :)

I still think that my sketch is still better than the painting but iŽm still learning. The next time IŽll rock... or the next.
Matt. I love the way you use the light and the characters are great. When I grow old I want to be like you.
Zimfin.. you work very hard... the paint goes better and better each time.
Reedux... Go ahead that thumb is wanting to grow, has al lot of movement.
Michaelloves... I like a lot the light of your work and i still can smell the coal o that train.
Janjager You really know how to use the light... your work is very suggestive.
Mr pink My favorite... so quick.. so powerful.
Andre rubenThanks for the support I hope you like the final one.
Nicktrip ThatŽs a train... I canŽt get all those details... mines are more simple.
Ismo Loose style but has a good sense of depth.
Hope you like mine... please comment.
Thankyou to you all.

@cegan: I think it's too soft. Some hard edges and areas in clear focus will help the environment feel more "real" and less "ethereal". Also, watch your scale. The guy on the platform looks like he's 10ft tall and there's a toy train coming into the station. Make sure the pieces fit together.

So many awesome ideas in here. I cant wait to see all the finished works, I don't think I'll finish this one, but I'm liking the feel.
Matt Kohr: Great work, I absolutely love that piece.
Cegan: I like the lighting a lot, just seems the perspectives are a bit off. It might be from all the soft edges. I find myself fleshing things out with a soft brush a lot, I get an ear full from everyone lol. Its always a good Idea to straighten and make sure everything is in place before adding extreme detail. Its easy to get lost in all the soft edges otherwise. HARD BRUSHES FTW!

Thanks for the critiques guys, it definitely looks a lot better now.
There's still perspective errors, but at this point I don't think they're fixable unless I start over. Perspective is definitely my weakness.. should have known better, haha.

cegan, it does look better, but there are still issues as you've mentioned. Next time, plan out your perspective and take the time to draw vanishing points and guidelines, all that stuff. Once you do that enough times you can start to fake it for speed, but doing it the long way will really help at first.
