ROUND #206 :: Father Time
DESCRIPTION
Father Time
Last week was Mother Nature’s turn, this week we are going to visualize a more abstract concept: Father Time!
Father Time is the personification of time and death and he is often depicted as an old man with a scythe and an hourglass. He announces the passing of time and the coming of Death. When you see Father Time, you know you’re time is up…
Design Father Time!
Setting can be anything
Include references to time and death (not necessarily the scythe and hourglass) and both have to show in your design
Father Time is not the same as the Grim Reaper, as he also symbolizes the passing of time!
Remember that Father Time is an old man, not a young stud :)
Good luck!

I once saw a man down an alleyway talking to himself. He mumbled of matter floating and ever pushed forward by the unstoppable forces of the universe. He then proceeded to piss all over his newspaper and yelled at me about my shoes. I don't think he was all there after all these years...

Here's my (apparently) friendly Father Time! He does good things and he'll lend a sympathetic ear, but he will not stop from doing what he must do, no matter how nicely you ask.
Edit: GAH, now that I'm on my laptop, I see the "smudges" on the final version... Guess I have to fiddle with my brightness/contrast settings!
I'm at work, now, and won't be back before the deadline :(

Cuts:
MasterTroglodyte: Far too little was visible of the actual ChoW.
Almost Cuts:
Jonathan C, Baron Impossible, IVITATT, Tom Fenton: You are extremely lucky because you also did not strictly follow the 3/4 rule. Your paintings did not include further design of the character past the waist. ChoW is a character design contest, not an illustration contest.
Let me repeat the most important rules of ChoW once more:
- Follow the topic: it's about designing the character of the topic. The environment or side characters are far less important.
- Show at least 3/4 of the design. This is not an illustration contest, but a design contest. Show your whole design!
- Include wips (work in progress). Show your work in progress and post (links to) this in the finals thread!
- Name your image as follows: ChoW#000_YourUsername.jpg No more final.jpgs please!
It's not so hard :)

I was already sharpening my keyboard regarding the 3/4 rule gehe. I get that you're issueing a final warning but I would've just cut all of them even if it would start a flame war. The 3/4 rule has been here since the dawn of time :P Some of them are pros (Baron Impossible for instance) they should know how to read a brief.
With that out of the way: Awesome round, and great work across the board :)

Apologies, I bearly got it up in time. My ideas were taking a while to cunjore up. I will make sure to follow the rules EXACTLY from now on.

Artemis, I see the error of my ways. Guess I got too caught up in the illustration aspect. Next time the whole design will be visible.

Are all polls a multi vote now ?
Baron Impossible:
Nice to see you around again ^^ Your work is amazing as always, especially for such a short time. Still using artrage ?
I am trying to get more realistic in light and colors, but it doesnt work completely, maybe you can give me an advice or two ? ^^
Chris Proof:
What ? Only 2 votes ? I really liked the strong fantasy flair in this one.
Glaudarien:
Its a character design, so showing his face is an essential part.
Obliviongrin:
Really nicely done, looks like a book painting, but I am missing the "out of the ordinary" - special thing.
Pixeltuner:
Sweet
Kaktuzlime:
That one made me laugh. The colors and the design are great. And a nice flow.
Monsi:
Stylish, with so few details you make it very clear. Minimalism rocks ^^

Vaejoun - I like how parts of him are blending with the background, and the floating rocks/pillars is a great touch.
Amedyr - Really like your line work. One thing I think however that could be better about this is that, your line work does seem to only include midtones and shadows, there are not any highlights. Well, you added them with the color layer sure, but I think it would that much better if they were in the line work as well.
Baron Impossible - Obviously really great! However I actually preferred this when the cogs were that blueish tone.
IVIATT - I really like the red and blue background.
monsi - I really enjoy how your white background seems intentionally painted, rather than simply the default background color.
RychLyons - Amazing, every detail is so well thought out. Every thing he is wearing is just perfect. I really enjoy the reflection of his feet, also.

* Vaejoun - Good character, looks old, like the gadgets. Background a little bright and could do with highlighting head and shoulders to provide focus. Brush strokes on the background look like you were trying a bit hard to be spontaneous.
* kaktuzlime - great composition and colours, love that guy's upper body. Legs and feet look deformed though, even sketchily drawn
* JonathanC - great pose and expression but looks unfinished
* RichLyons - my favourite! Great character, gadgets are really well done. Simple flip of the weapon doesn't sit easy with the eye as far as perspective is concerned.
* Lianti - subtle character, great face and nice colour palette, bit sketchy in parts
* Amedyr - I like the pose but the colour version isn't as good as the sketch
* kosmo975 - nice stylised work, interesting colours. The "father time" text spoils it a bit
* Obliviongrin - love it. If I was trying hard to find fault I'd say lose the photographic sky
* Richart - very original, solid design but metallic / old textures could be pushed a bit more

-Vaejoun- Very nice drawing, nice concept. I like the paintish style, I love the humor
-ChrisProof- Nice concept, but in my opinion too messy details and colors.
-gdlr- I like the character, although at first doesn't appear as a father time. also seems you didn't finish it.
-kaktuzlime- Very cool, love the colors and clean stylization. But for me not a father time at all. soz
-Jonathan C- very nice lights, I think is very decorative but not enough "concept character" like. if you could show the whole figure it would have been lot better.
-dkiearth- I like the concept and the composition. but details and mainly anatomy are very weak.
-Supervlieg- Love the style and the colors. I don't think the pose is appropriate for a concept, don't really see enough.
-richart- I Like it, interesting idea to picture him as a bot (quite an ironic and argumentative statement). maybe needed a bit more rendering?!
-RichLyons- My favorite since the first sketch. I love every single detail, and must admit there are quite a lot of them, I really dig and envy your style. you are the man.
-monsi- Cool and stylish, I'd liked it with more father time symbols (scythe, hour glass) but that's just me.
-courtlandw- I like the style but looks a bit too unfinished. the concept is cool tho (the time is a concept built in only humans?) plus same as above more traditional symbols
-Pixeltuner- Stylish and decorative, really love his beard. In my opinion is a bit too busy, I find it a bit hard to read.
-Baron Impossible- wow great illustration, so painting like, so accurate. basically perfect except that it doesent fit the briefing 100%. maybe too much illustration plus as my personal preference still like more with the traditional symbols. Thanks for the comment on my one. I wish I had more time to work on it . seeing it now I can spot so many mistakes, definitely the text spoiled it even more. bha! still good fun and practice is always worth it.
-Mephistoa- LOL that is funny, lol that is too funny. haha well done mate. not really father time tho (IMO) but still like it
-Lianti- good. there must be something in the lights or the colors that doesn't make him pop out. is like I haven't seen it.
-IVIATT- ok it has been said already that is more an illustration than a character concept. apart from that I think with coloring you lost a bit of the freshness that was in the pencil sketch. still like the idea.
-Amedyr- Cool, a bit messy, lacks the crispiness that I would like to see in that comic book style.
-Malakuko- quite interesting characteristics. In my opinion not really father time, and well too smudgy.
-Obliviongrin- very nice and clean, I agree with baron impossible, loose the photographic background. also I think there is a sort of weakness in the colors and/or the lights
