I thought I understood what Superflat was, but now I'm lost. First I read it's a parody of Japanese pop culture in itself, but then I read that it's the opposite, more or less a homage in the fine art world. What the heck is it?
EDIT: Ah whoops, wrong section of general forums.

In the fine art world, parody and homage, irony and sincerity, are often intertwined to the point of inseparability. The wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superflat) is actually a pretty good explanation.

Eesh, I know it's one thing to say it can't be black and white, but it shouldn't be contradictory, should it?

Jonathon Ross's interview with Takashi Murakami, who invented superflat, explains it pretty well and in detail:

...Ok, so with pop culture it glorifies the good, and also points out the bad.
But as a whole it's about breaking what people think is or isn't art, like the whole "art or illustration" thing.
This Murakami is a cool dude. Plus his work is pretty awesome, ignoring the disgusting ones.

Superflat is name that Takashi Murakami came for his style of work, yknow the stuff with wierdesque disney like figures and and super saturated/super lovely colors.
And I wouldnt care for it. So an artist came up with name of style that is ironically derivative of some good original stuff(in this case the anime/manga). Pfff. I like some of his work but whatever.

Bhanu, you're my art hero!
Hah, thanks!
I hope people dig me or my work because of good qualities in the works, rather than vain originality or the shock factor or something.
