sounds amazing.

Bad luck for me. My flight arrives at 11pm on the 13th so I will miss registration. And it's a whopping $250 to change flight times. I am going to call rockhurst this week, I'm sure we can work something out.

Thanks for the info!

The whole college thing is pretty foreign to me since living on-site is not very common here unless you're an international student.

I'm struggling to find any facility details or pictures on the Rockhurst website of how the campus housing is structured. Does each dorm have cooking facilities, or are there communal facilities?

And student housing/dorms = a hallway with lots of bedrooms springing off either side?

These probably sound like stupid questions to an American but my only references are movies. ha
The 'freshman', 'junior' etc lingo is also lost on me. I might have to consult some buddies for a crash course in Americanisms before I leave...

Most excellent, I can hardly wait! Just five more weeks... the five longest weeks of my life certainly, but still, just five weeks!

Would it be wise to bring a variety of mediums with us? Personally I'm most comfortable with digital, but am also fairly handy with acrylics, so would it be a good idea to bring them along just in case? And also is there a cafeteria or something there that we can access with our IDs, and if so does it cost anything additional?

Thanks a bunch for the info! ... five more weeks. *runs away*

Alright, I've got some more information from Rockhurst about McGee Hall, just in case anyone else was wondering:

"All of the double rooms have two beds in them…they are not bunked.

As far as kitchen facilities, it is located in the basement of the hall and it consists of two microwaves. Unfortunately, the hall was renovated last year and there is no longer an oven/stove in the building. However, we do have a cafeteria on campus that serves food during the summer."

Andantonius -

We would like you to bring what you are most comfortable with. I would suggest at least one traditional medium in addition to your digital. There is a short supply list linked here: http://illustrationacademy.com/speci.../supplies.html

We are sensible with materials and there is a Utrecht store within walking distance! So, please do not try to travel with your entire studio! There will be much to see and try, material cost will be inexpensive.

Thanks for checking out Rockhurst and sharing. I toured McGee Hall last week and will add, it is very nice! There are many eating options close by.

Thanks,

John

Oh you'll be fine. Just ask if you don't know something.

Each dorm varies on how it's set up, but yes, it is essentially a hallway with a lot of bedrooms. Bathrooms/Showers can be communal or per dorm.

I can't wait! This is going to be awesome guys :)

How do you know which site you're going to though? I know there are limited seats at each.

Some what related to Thyname's query, if we do have delays in our flights and end up getting there after registration do we just call and let you guys know?

So I'm getting my plane tickets sorted out and I have the option of getting in at either 11:00 or 12:30 on Sunday. Is anyone else getting in near those times? Cause if so we could probably split the cab fare to the college, which my dad estimates would be somewhere around $75.

34 days, 20 hours, 57 minutes and 54 seconds to go...

BRINKMAN!

I wish I could join you all for IA... but my moving logistics/money situation just won't allow for it this time around. I will, however, be in KC from June 4th on and I'll be right up the hill, so I'm sure I'll be seeing you once the 14th comes around and we podlings roll in.

EDIT-
Scratch that, I'll only miss the first week. See you all on the 4th or 5th!

Auren-

Hey just give a call at (913) 579-1139 and I will make sure you are take care of. The payment for the housing is due at registration, but the following day will work. If you are concerned about the Pod locations, just tell me which one you are interested in, we have plenty of space except for San Francisco!

I look forward to hearing from you!

John: Still trying to work this out, make it happen. Is there somewhere on the website that lists the details of what will be covered in the 3 week workshop?

Also a materials/equipment list?

One more question. Is there a Richmond 3 week TAD workshop also, or just KC?

I'll be booking my flight to arrive during the registration time. If anyone wants to share a cab that would be ideal. Or maybe we could trick a hotel shuttle bus to taking us close to the campus if there are any then walk the rest of the way. Any ideas?

Marsk-

The workshop will be focused on the hands on aspect of our foundation program. Drawing, intro to media and the beginning process of picture making will all be demonstrated. There will be an introduction to the technology, the students will be shown how the critiques and interaction works on line. Tons of studio time and demonstrations from our faculty!

Thanks John! I replied to both of the emails I received but I haven't gotten any kind of confirmation to the workshop. I booked my flight and plan on attending so I hope I can still get in : /, oh yea and the supply link that you provided appears to be broken. I found my way to the supply list via the site though.

I did some research and found some shuttles that will go from MCI to the university round trip for much cheaper then a taxi. And you can book them in advance. http://www.ifly.com/kansas-city-international-airport/MCI-airport-shuttles

Hey John, could you take a screen capture of the google maps and point out which is the McGee Hall and the other important landmarks. Would come in handy as I arrive so late on Sunday and would be stoked to head straight there:)

Thank you very much.

Jussi here is a really good campus map on the Rockhurst University website that might help. The studio for classes seems to be two blocks north and one block west of McGee Hall.

Nice find, Ninjac!

Comparing that to google maps, this would seem to be the location of the dorms and studios: [Link] (http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c25/Andantonius/WorkshopLocations.jpg)

Just had a thought, I've got a foldable easel that's quite portable, would it be a good idea to bring it along, or will they be provided / not needed?

Jason Manley
May 31st, 2010, 07:46 PM
A, I would bring the easel just in case you get the urge to go paint somewhere. That happened with me when I studied at the Illustration Academy years ago. I ended up out in the woods with some students painting the rolling hills and enjoying the freedom of plein air. I'd bring it just for that option in case you decide you want to go create outside of class. Is just a personal thing...

Quick question regarding software; on the workshop supply list Photoshop and Painter are listed, and in the info packet I just got it specifically mentions Photoshop CS4 and Painter 11.

I recently got a new laptop and Intuos4 for TAD, and the bundled software (photoshop elements 8 and painter essentials) is what I have been using so far. From what I've seen they more than suffice; they've got brushes and layers and blending modes, which is all I normally use. Do we specifically need to have CS4 or Painter 11, or will the slightly watered-down versions be fine? And if we do need them, is it possible to get student discounts on them?

Also, regarding tablets, I bought the small size Intuos4 for the workshop, as the supply list wasn't online when I ordered it. Will the small one be fine for the workshop? I've got a 21-inch Cintiq for the rest of the online classes, so the I4 is mainly just for mobile use (namely the workshop).

Thanks in advance. :)

Oh no :jawdrop:

I totally misread the info on this workshop in KC... For whatever reason I was under the impression that it was only for the students who signed up specifically for the Illustration path back in May. I don't know why (reading over this thread now and the info packet just mailed, everything makes a lot more sense), but I thought I had something to do in Berkeley on monday, so I was all gearing up for that. Should have definitely sublet my place and bought a plane ticket like a month ago...

Man, you guys are going to be eating glorious BBQ and sweet tea, and getting down with the Samurais for 3 weeks. Looks its going to be an awesome crash course, I'm way jealous. :)

For those who are attending, have a blast and please post some pics if you get the chance. And if anyone is floating around in the Bay for the next couple weeks without much to do, definitely hit me up. Maybe we can get something going during the interim till July
