So, I've been hanging around the forums for the past fortnight or so, feeling inspired and working on the basics on my own, but not wanting to join as I'm in the middle of my GCSE's at school; I kept telling myself to wait until I finish school and can commit to it properly.
I realised today I was using that as an excuse to continue being shy, and that I wasn't going to get any better if I kept putting things off. :^^;:
So, here's to improvement! :D Gonna try and swallow my pride/shyness and post everything in here.
Any help at all you can give is amazing. :) (let's hope I've got this posting thing right)
Recently: I've been doing some lighting/values basics 'cause I suck at that, and some small watercolour studies I've been trying to do everyday to improve my (non-existent) watercolour skills, and some hogarth studies (with some doodles thrown in, I think). Sorry if the first post is a bit over kill!

A bit pathetic that this is all I have to show since last post. :\
More mini watercolour studies from a crumpled piece of paper:
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/wcstudies4.jpg
a self portrait + perspective practice:
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/selfp.jpg
another lighting study - found this slightly challenging, think I learnt from it.
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/lightingstudy2.jpg
and lastly, some loomis proportions studies. Sorry if this is a little messy, why I chose to draw it over something else (boxes in perspective) is anyone's guess.

Right, new post. Been a bit lazy, not artwise, but i-didn't-want-to-scan-and-edit-wise. :bashful:
School ends in 4 weeks, and the exams about 2-3 weeks after that - and then I can properly throw myself into art. :D
Loomis studies (proportion/perspective), vilppu exercises, a wind-down doodle trying to apply, and an unfinished still life of a buddha ornament.

Also, didn't really want to post this, but I said I'd post everything, so...
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/033expectations.jpg
This was started before I realised I had to go right back to the very basics, and I've had to finish it up since I'd promised it to someone else.
I wanted alot to scrap it, since it's kinda the sort of thing I'm trying to move away from, but ahh well. Here's to being able to kick the ass of this painting soon!

Love the girl with the windswept hair. All the studies you're doing will definitely help with the fundamentals, but don't be so worried about getting everything exactly right that you miss out doing faster studies as well. Quick gesture drawings will help train your eye and loosen you up. Plus being messy is fun ^_^

Your back-to-basics focus is such a good one! So many artists (myself included) have not properly honed basic abilities of imagining and executing simple forms at will, have been unable to see how key these tools of perception and rendering really are... These lessons that you're doing are the exercises that allow magic brain muscles to grow in an organized and balanced fashion and they eventually allow us to carry very heavy concepts that would otherwise be inconceivable, much less moveable. These are the lessons that, as we really really learn them over time/practice, slowly reveal themselves as our best buddies. Bravo in these endeavours!

Glycerine:You're right, I have a perfectionist streak that I find hard to ignore. x) Guess it does stop me being as loose as I should be. I've been doing quick gestures in the morning, but I think I'm gonna do more as I'm obviously not getting enough out of them - thankyou!
William B. Hand: Thanks for the reassurance, I needed that! :) Going back to the basics kinda made me realise how bad I actually am, and I was starting to wonder if it was helping at all.Still, gotta keep going! :D
Not as much this time; hit a very slight slump, back on track now I think.
The last of my watercolour studies for a while, because I'm kinda bored of these. Gonna do something different, to shake it up a little - thinking of pulling out the acrylics, but when I've finished my exams.
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/wcstudies6.jpg
A little bit more perspective/vilppu, and some random depressed android-y girl - trying to improve my crappy line economy:
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/loomisperspectsphere-1.jpg
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/villppuandroid.jpg
and some quick figure studies, limited myself to ten minutes each, focusing on gesture and proportion. These are on a3 sheets and had to be scanned in 4 parts, so sorry for my crappy photoshop skills in piecing them together, haha:
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/figurestudies.jpg

crap, it's been ages (or feels like it) since I posted, and I have almost nothing to show for it. :^^;: Been having trouble juggling exams/revision, social-life and art - although I know that's really no excuse.
So, here's what I got. :D
More loomis/vilppu. I find Vilppu easier to grasp I think; but when I do start to understand Loomis, it helps so much. Having trouble analysing the studies as opposed to copying:

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/loomisframe2.jpg
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/vilppu.jpg
some gestures - been doing these every morning, these are my latest. Mixture of 10, 15 and 30 secs. Again, having trouble finding/feeling the pose as opposed to copying it. sorry for the crappy phone pictures :S :

Zombifried: thankyou! I guess I'd be moving in the right direction alot quicker if I could just draw more... :bashful:
okay, so the reason for the lack of uploads lately = cramming for exams. Damnn, I just want them to be over. I have a week off that I can draw and revise in, then the first day I go back, I have nearly four hours worth of exams. D':
So, I know, I suck, this is all I have to show. More loomis studies - gonna do the last few studies of his skeletons after these, then do a minimum of fifty from my head, just to make sure the understanding's cemented there.
oh, the lined things are an exersize from vilppu, too.

These were done at school, since I decided the time spent in PE is alot better spent taking advantage of the art classrooms. :) first some ink skulls from a plastic skull model, since I love ink but suck at it and wanted to improve my lines, then a mannequin drawn in pencil, overhand.

new update :) gonna try and get into the habit of uploading at least every other day. Should become easier after Monday, when I get 3 of my remaining 6 exams out of the way. :D
First, today's gestures - ugh, this is the closest I can get to a good photo when I'm working on anything larger than A4, I'm afraid.
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/DSC00278.jpg
looking at basic line/form - I think it's from a thread on CA actually, if I remember the link I'll post it.. :S it helped tons with me understanding gesture, anyway - I've finally stopped looking at the spine as the line of action.
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/lineforceshapeform.jpg
More loomis skeletons - the first page is studies, the rest, as promised, is me starting on the fifty from my head. Realising how much *fifty* actually is, but I'm goddamn stubborn - I said I'm doing fifty, I'm doing fifty. eep.

and lastly, some of the topics from this thread (http://http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=64711&page=3). I know I messed up the side planes on the first, but I can't figure out the way the shadows would fall - any help with that would be amazing :] and the second is a novelty salt and pepper shaker of my mums, from life. ;)

Long time, no post. :S I got three of my big exams over today - nearly four hours of exams! :( - so I'm hoping from here on in to focus completely on my art, especially over the summer. I've set up a loose schedule which I may tighten when I know what works for me, and gonna try and upload every other day at least.
So here's to more art! :D
I finally finished those loomis skeletons, maaan fifty is a big number. But I feel much better for doing it. (Sorry for the overload, I get that this isnt as interesting)

whe-ew, bigger load than I thought. Giving loomis a short break to go onto bridgeman, since I found his complete guide to drawing from life at the library (I was so happy when I saw it - they're so not getting it back for a while xD).
Also, quick and dirrty doodle done to chill out between ethics and maths exams. Shows I desperately, desperately need to work on legs. And hands. And guns. And, well, everything.
Also, am I the only one who finds it ironic that I draw a girl with a bigass gun on the back of an ethics revision guide? ;)

Waheyy! This is the first free day I've had since the start of exam season. :D
So I spent it almost exclusively on drawing. :] And I still have the rest of the night yet!
Starting to teach myself acrylics - hoping to get the hang of them before I start college in september, since I'm pretty sure they'll come in useful. Gonna do a small one of these still lives every day. Today - an egg. I could not get the scan right, at all.
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/Acrylic001.jpg
Some practice with line - contour, blind contour, half-blind contour and negative space. (Btw, it's an ashtray shaped like a crab, where the shell is the lid. I use it to sharpen my pencils into. :) )
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/Contours.jpg
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/negspace.jpg
And some Bridgeman, with a still life of an empty perfume bottle. Man, glass is hard to render:
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/bridgeman2.jpg
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/bridgeman.jpg
I'm just gonna be working my way through the bridgeman book chronologically, making studies of it all and reading it - is there any better way to do it? Just wondering, since the way I'm planning... it doesn't seem as... efficient... as it could be. *shrug* idk.
In town tomorrow, gonna try and get some life drawing done, and hopefully get a job somehow! Fingers crossed.

Thanks for visiting my sketchbook! I like your from imagination poses, looks like a lot of work. congrats on doing all 50. I'm reading through my Bridgeman book as well, I just want to have gone through the book and studied it all, even if kinda quickly, so that I'll know it a little. And I'll just use it for reference and studies and stuff when I finish. I'm not sure it makes a ton of sense either, but if two unrelated people got the same idea, how bad can it be?

Vertical: No problem, I'm an ass for not commenting, still trying to get into the habit x). And yeah, I guess this way we're still training our eyes, if nothing else, right? :)
Yesterday was pathetic art-wise, today was probably the best I've had, but still not good enough. :D So let's just group them into one post so I don't look as slow as I am!
More acrylic studies, yesterday's and today's. First one seems to be floating, because I was too lazy to paint the clasp it was resting on in. The second I forced myself to finish, even though it was giving me more trouble because of the color matching and came out crappier. Guess I need to practice more color! :)

Had a weird two days; the last day of high school, ever, was yesterday; kinda surreal as everyone seemed upset and nostalgic and I couldn't wait to get away. I'm free, haha (until I start college in september, at any rate). But still, that's tons of free drawing days and days. :D
Acrylics from yesterday and today - not happy with them at all, but I think I learnt something at least.
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/Acrylic004.jpg
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/Acrylic005.jpg
Some crappy line drawings to fix my lines a little. Just grabbed whatever was nearest.

And, let's see... More bridgeman, a quick rose shaped candle from life, a tonal study of a cheap Pharaoh bust, a self portrait and some stuff from the head. Really need to get back into the habit of doing stuff from imagination, those really suck.

Choucete: Thanks! :D Although, I don't feel like I do nearly enough - today's post is plain example of that, eheh. :bashful:
Last two days have been a horrible mix of being busy then the being tired from the busy-ness resulting in lazyness... So, I have an embarrasingly small post to make. Gotta fix that, starting tomorrow! No more small posts!
The last two day's acrylics - felt I was finally getting somewhere with the chocolate, then the crappiness of the elastic band came along. The color mixing on that was hell.
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/Acrylic006.jpg
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/Acrylic007.jpg
And more of the Bridgman. Approaching these differently from now on - realised I wasn't learning much at all; doing copy after copy meant I was focusing on line and getting line right, rather than learning the structure, as well as being dull as hell. .
So, long story short, decided instead of mindlessly copying each one painstakingly, I'm gonna do it systematically, looking at what I can learn from each drawing, and applying what I've learned regularly. (and I feel like an idiot for not realising this before...)
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/bridgeman7.jpg

okay, tomorrow, gotta make up for this, wake up early, no internet, sit down and draw draw draw! :D

Apart from the second sketch, these were all yesterday's work - I wanted to upload them yesterday, but I kept thinking 'well, I could go scan them in... or I could carry on drawing;' and I eventually got so tired I had to go to bed. :D Good drawing day.
Gonna start trying daily updates, if nothing else so I feel guilty when I have an unproductive day.
Imagination sketches; trying to do at least a page a day from my head. It's hard in a different kinda way than studies.
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/Snakelady.jpg
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/Raven.jpg
Bridgman - page 2 was trying to apply it to stock photos. I need to do more drawing from reference.
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/Bridgmanboxes.jpg
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/bridgmanboxapply.jpg
Acrylic - gonna leave these for a while; learning to draw would go so much quicker if I wasn't trying to teach myself how to paint at the same time.
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/Acrylicbanana.jpg
Started to do exercises out of the natural way to draw, by Kimon Nicolaides; so many contours/gestures! But I like his structured approach.
To give you an idea of size, these were nearly all done on their own separate piece of a4 paper. (scanning and piecing together was hell.)

Vertical: Thanks :)
Okay, so much for the daily updates. x) But the majority of what I've been drawing has been tons of gestures/contours, and they're very scrappy and not so nice to look at (as well as being hell to scan).
Finally scraped enough together to post. :)
Went in town yesterday to do some life drawing, gonna be going every week since I obviously need it. :D
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/Lifedraw2.jpg
bridgman - finally going in more specialised on parts of the body. Starting with attacking what I think is one of my weaknesses - arms. Followed shortly by hands and feet. And legs. And everything else. ;)
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/bridgmanarm.jpg
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/Bridgmanarmbone.jpg
A self portrait, trying to describe using only line. Had a feeling I was using tone to hide my shoddy lines - man, I was right x]. Need to do more line drawings, I think.
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/spline.jpg
Crappy head doodle.
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/Blindguy.jpg
Need to do more imagination stuff! Wanna start to get back to doing finished pieces for myself again, but I've been feeling really crappy about my art and not good enough and it seems to be causing me some trouble. Gotta battle through, right?

Need to upload more often instead of cramming it all into one big post. :^^;:
Still trying to do more from my head; I'd already kinda set myself the goal of filling my sketchbook before I go to college in september, but now I've decided to only do stuff from my head in there and do my studies on printer paper. :D That should push me some.
Thumbnails and a very early wip of the piece I'm working on - any crits are very helpful; I realised after scanning that the right shoulder is placed wrong, hah.
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/bloodthumbnails.jpg
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/bloodsketch.jpg
Decided to lay some tones onto the snakecharmer sketch; always feels weird painting in photoshop, like I'm not actually painting. So I don't finish stuff the majority of the time. (Can't you tell one of my favourite things to draw/paint is tummies?)
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/tonalsnakeladyjpeg.jpg
Upper arm studies, bridgman then application.

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/Bridgmanarmmuscleapply.jpg
And more practice with line and proportion. Seems I can get relatively clean lines when I'm not drawing from my head. :nohope: Solution: more head sketches! :teeth:

Stayed up till 3 in the morning just draw, draw, drawing. :D Felt gooood. (Felt less good when my uncle's big mouth woke me up 3 hours later...)
I know I can do more, though. :teeth: But not tonight, german exam tomorrow. ugh. but, FINAL exam!!
Finalised sketch, painting it up today.

The last sketch I did last night - tried rendering, maaan that needs work. Feels good to finally be adressing my (non-existent) rendering skills, though. :D

more arm muscle studies, moving onto the forearm. The arm is complicatedd, man - all those little tendons. :)

need to art moooore.
Continued wip of the sketch - attempted to paint this traditionally, but I hadn't realised how crappy the paper quality was. It buckled like hell and all the paper fibres were coming away. So, digital. :)

This took up the majority of my art time today. I know, it's so overdone and unimaginative, pencil portraits of celebrities - I normally stay away from them, but this was done as a birthday present for a friend. Left eye is majorly jacked up, but I'm so proud that I sat down to do it and practically didn't move till it was done. I never do that, focus is a major weakness of mine.

Empty and lonely thread is getting kinda lonely. x)
Going to attempt (again) to do little and often updates as opposed to waiting until I have a bunch of stuff to show.
Update on this; I think I'll be giving up on it after this, I really feel it isn't going anywhere, it's too empty, I don't know how to go forward, yadda ya. Learning experience though (I think..I hope!)
Also, I've noticed it's noticeably darker outside of photoshop than when it's in it. :\ help, please?

Value study. Painted in greyscale from a colour photo, then converted photo to greyscale to see how close I was to the actual value. Gonna do more of these too.
Proportions/placement is so messed up it's untrue, since I was painting from scratch instead of sketching it out then painting it. Harder, but more fun. :D

I missed yesterday because I had an open day at my future college, and I guess all of those late nights/early mornings caught up with me cuz as soon as I got home I went to bed and slept for eleven hours straight. :D
Sketch from imagination, tried to really push myself in terms of rendering/lighting. Funny how my hatching goes to shit when I'm working from imagination:

Man, you're pretty damn diligent with your studies! I think you're on the right track getting the pure drawing skill down and all the Bridgman is starting to creep into the imagination stuff too, so that's going pretty OK too. You could work some more on the proportions of the limbs, they can get a little long or thick sometimes. Also, perspective! That one with the dying gladiator is out whack, you'd do well to lay out a perspective grid for it.
Liek that last SP btw, not perfect in regards to symmetry and perspective but it's well rendered. Just keep posting, you're getting there.

Walnut: Thankyouu :) Proportion and perspective? I'm on it! ...tomorrow, haha. Not sure how to study proportion directly though, other than copying the standing-8-heads diagrams, and idk how to transfer that to other than static poses. I'll try and keep it in mind though, while I'm drawing. :)
Didn't get much done today, family commitments. Managed to squeeze in some studies.

Your pencil stuff is really nice, nice shading! About your value studies with the portraits, don't get too hung up on likeness. That's why I don't like painting celebrities etc. but I have noticed that that improves greatly with time along with your values.
Keep up the good work!

I have to give you props on your dedication, like those fifty stickmen based on Loomis.
Yeah, I've also found the eight-heads diagram isn't useful for poses other than standing straight up. I think it's more about where things lie relative to each other. The crotch is halfway between the length of the body. Elbow kind of lines up with the navel, though if the arm is lifted I have to eyeball it. Things like that.
Jessibelle
July 4th, 2010, 03:17 PM
Alexson: Thankyou :D Yeah I'm not into drawing celebrities much either, too overdone and cliche - but the Micheal Buble was done as a birthday present, and I kinda wanted her to be able to recognize him. ;) But I'll try to focus more on value and learning than likeness on portraits - maybe I should time myself so I don't get so nitpicky... hmm. :)
Videroboy: haha, thanks - feels weird to be called dedicated, I think I tend to be rather lazy. :bashful: Yeah, I guess the answer is just to check and double check the relative proportions as I'm drawing.
Baad art day. Felt weirdly overwhelmed, like I knew I had a lot to learn, but I didn't know where to start. Kept getting distracted, like I'd start studying one thing, two minutes in think 'no, I should be doing this instead, this is more important' and switch. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Ahh well, it'll pass, gotta push through. :)
Been working on this at night just to relax and try to fully enjoy art again. :teeth:

It's all relative of course. Everyone says I need to draw every day, but more often than not I end up playing video games or surfing the Internet. :dur:

hey hey keep these studies up, there's some real nice progress from your first posts, and your getting very lovely gesture in your bridgeman studies! Your tonal studies are very mid-range on the value scale, try squinting at the picture your working from to find the lightest lights and the darkest darks, you've got the mid-tone down, now you just need to apply your lights and darks~ But anyways, keep studying :) Oh and in your latest picture there, the arm that is wrapping around her waist looks too bendy. And I think your feet are stubby looking in some of your images, definitely start studying/practicing those :)

Busy busy weekend - had my school prom and other (related and unrelated) stuff. Pretty damn eventful. But I'm back!
More work on this, tried to fix up the face and the arm:
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/gunbangwoahwip1.jpg
Then starting to attempt colour. Preetty obvious I don't have a clue what I'm doing xD I need to start actually studying colour rather than making it up as I go along...

You've improved with values and figures fast! That boot looks great and so does the bleeding figure painting. I like the composition a lot and the red on desaturated turquoise looks delicious. Just two minor crits, the forearm holding the wound looks slightly bent around the stomach and assuming she's pointing the gun in the same direction where she's looking, the arm should be foreshortened a bit so it looks too long now.
This is already one of those sketchbooks that remind that hard work pays off. Keep up the good work! :)

Some screencaps from a movie, looking at tone and tone within a composition. It's friggin' amazing how each frame is composed - and they're done in a split second of filming, whereas I have to agonise over composing an image for ages! I hadn't realised just how much composition is in each shot. amazing.

ugh, every time i think i have free time, it comes back and bites me in the ass. xD Working, catching up with neglected friends, and various other duties all steal precious, precious art time. (and it's only going to get worse once i start college, so I best get used to it.)
Here's what I have since the last up date-
finished shoe.

Since I was starting to find my footing with the whole painting thing, I figured the best thing to do was jump right out of my comfort zone. Some huuge flaws, but overall I'm pretty pleased with this:

Wow, i hadn't realised how much i had (unintentionally) been neglecting art. :( feel free to kick my ass.
acrylic painting - one of the first that's just from my head - to decorate the front of my current sb. :) a ton of flaws (I don't think it's physically possible to hold your arm like that), but that's what I get for drawing it straight out with paint - but sketching with paint and brush is so fun! x)
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/Sketchbookcove.jpg
then, some quick (in theory - didnt quite work out that fast... ) photostudys; I've really been neglecting the pencil, and some more studys as usual.

Wow, I can really see the improvement from the 1st to 2nd page, I think it really shows in those ones from the photo references you just posted, your lines look much more confident and relaxed.
After looking at all your bridgeman studies it really makes me want to find where my copies of his books are, once I do I'll really got to get my butt in gear and do some more studies! Keep up the good work!

Didn't want to post till I had a replacement keyboard (also the reason why everything is traditional. No keyboard = No photoshop keyboard shortcuts.)

Acrylics, a still life (mushrooms! :D) and another face study. These take me a while to complete, one of the reasons this post is so empty.

Master study of a sculpture by the ancient greek Lysippus (or well, a copy made after it in 325-300bc, since the original doesn't exist any more.) Referenced from an art history book. I've recently discovered that I absolutely adore art history.

I know I said I'd post everything, but I think I'm gonna stop uploading the bridgman/loomis/hogarth etc studies, just cause it gets repetitive, it's boring to look at and can't really be critiqued. I'll still be doing them though! Lately, been doing bridgman heads and loomis foreshortening/perspective.

Damn those eye studies looked lifelike! Good job with colors on the first enviro thumbnail especially. Third one has more challenging lighting but make sure you get the air perspective captured whenever it's visible. The picture misses the light blue on the horizon. Great to see you still diligently drawing and updating. Keep it up! :)

Great nose studies! Both color studies look carefully done and the basic things are there. I guess I'm nitpicking but try to nail the relations of color areas next to each other, like that the sky behind the mountain is not only lighter but also more saturated and turquoise, and that the highlights on the mountain are warmer than the shadows. The lower part of that picture looks like it could use an orange overlay. I think I'm repeating the same thing to everyone but I find it easier to find the colors with the color palette as taught in this great tutorial by Linran (www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=2097738#post2097738), because you don't have to open the color picker every time. Keep it up but don't over-exhaust yourself! :)

Smuli: I knew something was off with the colour, but it hadn't occurred to me to think in terms of warm/cool colours and colour relationships - it seems so obvious to me now, haha. I'll have to remember that. (: And the tutorial is amazing, I have it constantly open in a tab so I can keep checking it - thankyou! 8D And thanks so much for the repeated support and critique, it helps tonns~. :D
okay, so college didn't get me into routine as much as I'd hoped (in fact, it knocked out the little routine I had). So, I'm being pro-active! :) I'll be updating weekly, on a sunday, no matter how little or much I have to show.
Also, I finally got a wacom! :D :D :D Spent the whole of my first wage+all my birthday money on a fucking gorgeous intuos4 I've named Malachi. Okay, long time no post! College kinda killed me for a while. Things were getting crazy, and I wasn't coping at all; I felt I was learning nothing on my art course, being made to churn out crap just to pass an exam I didn't care about, and getting no time to study on my own. Long story short, after discussions with the mother, I've decided to drop out as of next Monday and focus on studying on my own for the time being. :)
So, I should return to full posting form, with any luck!
Vertical: Thankyouu! I find it hard convincing myself I'm working hard unless I have a ton to show for it, ha. I see what you mean about the composition, thanks, I hadn't noticed that. :) I'll fiddle around a little with that to see if i can fix it!

Nice work! Good luck with the whole college thing. It feels like your shading is kinda all over the place. I'm not totally sure, but I think focusing on shading with or against the form only would help. making lines in only one direction might be good too. It looks like you;re paying too much attention to contour in your figure studies, try to focus on gesture and keep it loose!
Jessibelle
November 24th, 2010, 12:21 PM
Vertical: Thanks for those crits, they were actually dead on! My shading on those was actually really sloppy, I was sort of subliminally rushing for them. ^^; I need to regain my dedication! Tried to focus less on contour on these, I don't think I'm there at all yet though. More Practice! It's a hard habit to get out of. x)

Values are great as always and I really like the banana color study. Good use of colors on the digital figure too! On the self-portrait, there's a good sense of form but on the hatching, try to avoid 90 degree angles, they look kind of distracting. The pencil figures on the last post look really solid. Keep it up, and thanks for the nice comment! :)

New year :D Much as I hate to admit it, my art drive kinda died out in the last few months of 2010, around about the same time I started college. But, new year, dropped half my classes and I'm ready to start busting my ass in the name of art again! :D
I usually make lots of resolutions and see how many I can keep; this year, I only made three:

-Win a teen challenge x)
-Improve my focus on things, including art.

and two colour studies. These took me the majority of a day, each. Neither's really finished, but i'm spending way too long on them for what they are. Need to speed up - guess that'll come with time, though. :) Source is this (http://fhrankee.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=24) - gorgeous portraits. :)

not as much this time; I don't know what happened. :\ I'm not falling off again! better upload next timee.
Studies: hogarth, Kchen and photostudies. Also, does any body know where I can find more kchen stuff? the only place I'm getting it atm is characterdesigns.com.

Tried applying the studies I've been doing, and did some torso's from my head. These suck :( Moral to the story - I really need to apply studies more often.
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/applyingtorsos.jpg
Had a big empty free period at college; decided to sit in the cafeteria and get some lifedrawing in. :) I got caught staring at people as I did it at least twice, lmao - really need to work on subtlety. ;D
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/lifedraqwingvista.jpg
And a small tonal from life. I intended to spend one night doing lots of these, but it was also the first time I tried to paint on my laptop, which turned out to be alot more complicated than I was planning on - the screen resolution is so loww!

Got other stuff, but it's in progress and too close to being finished to be worth posting right now. :)

I've been working overtime at work these past two days; which, when i had to go into college on those days too, leaves me less time to art than i'd like. (i was leaving the house for 7:25 and not getting home till after six. :/)
tiny bit of bridgeman and hogarth, some photostudies and some more torsos from my head; I'm finally starting to feel like these chest studies are making a difference. :D I think applying what I've been learning is helping a ton.

a tonal still life of one of the mother's egyptian ornaments; this took foreverr, and it's still not finished. Thought letting it alone now would be the best use of my time x)

Ugh, working overtime during college terms really takes it out of me. And out of my art-time. Here's what I've managed to scrounge up for the last few dayys. :)
Some more chest studies; hogarth + photostudies.

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/Torsosphotostudys.jpg
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/Torsosgs.jpg
And sketchbook pages - first is life drawing, including some friends faces from college. using pen to challenge myself to get the right lines first instead of jumping about everywhere, and to be a bit braver with my marks aswell. :) Plus, it's rather funn. Oh, the blue ink came through from another page. oops.

Great to see you're able to churn out drawings on top of everything else you're doing. Really good studies! The forms and shadings are great the torsos look very solid. I can feel the rigidity of the ribcage on the twisted poses and it shows you're putting a lot of thought on the structure. It's probably a great idea to study many different anatomy authors at the same time.
The still life of the Egyptian ornament is looking very good on the face and neck but the background looks a bit busy with the small brush strokes. Why not paint it with a few strokes with a huge brush instead? Because of that and the dark value, the corner kind of steals attention IMO. Using the biggest brush you possibly can reduces the time spent and gives a more fluid look.
Keep up the great work!

Smuli:Thankyouu :) tbh, I think I'm balancing my time really badly :\ but heyy, gotta keep soldiering on, right? x) yeah, stroke economy is a bit of a (big) weakness I should work on - I get too wrapped up in how each small section looks and end up using brushes way too small. Oops.
Still fighting for time, this is all I could scrape up. I'm getting a bit tired of chests, so i'm gonna spend tonight/tomorrow just killing them, and then move on to something else for now. :)
Also, name change - fits a bit better, since people actually call me this, whereas dominode was just some random sounding thing off the top of my head.
lessee... little bit of chest study, some sketchbook pages (including a small carravaggio study done in my college breaks); some post-it note/reciept roll doodles from the rare times when it gets tired at work, including a study from a bookcover that was lying on the till, and the set up for a small still life im planning on when i get some more time.

only ten mins until the end of the week - ten minutes to upload before i fail my new years resolution. No time to scan, so here - have an actually finished tonal enviro study. felt i learnt quite a bit from this - mostly about brush controls and work process more than anything.

gonna try setting myself daily goals, see if that gets my ass in gear any. Also, from march onward - at leas t one fully finished personal piece, every month.

So, this week started off so well~ had a really good monday, artwise. tuesday onwards is where it started to go wrong... I got a little sick. hence the slightly later than usual update x)
But, I'm all better now! nearly. Although, you still won't get an update from me for a week now - Im'a be in germany for a week :D gonna try and get as much sketching done there as possible, fingers crossed.
Been studying Jeno Barcsay's 'Anatomy for the Artist' lately - amazing book. <3 So easy to understand, the pictures are just gorgeous to study and he really goes into depth. Feel like I'm understanding a lot that I didn't before. :)

back from germany! loved it, it's beautiful there and the art scene is so much more alive than it is back home :D didnt get as much art done as i wanted though, it was a college trip so i was constantly with other students doing some activity or other.

you'd see either more of his chest, or his back in that perspective, and his neck seems a little long, or misplaced due to the small shoulder and her arm..that's just my analysis of it, shrug

great stuff. sketching on the train is a brilliant way to learn. Sometimes I'll see something very simple go by (like a rooftop) and try to draw it from memory. That is a great exercise to improve your memory so maybe give it a try?
Anyway, no crits, just keep doing what you're doing!

Dope Fiend: Thank youu, that was really helpful. :) i've tried to fix it, but i'm not sure how well that went - it'll be in a future post. and yeah, putting myself on guilt trips is a bad habit i need to kick :/
ThomasM: i know, and it's a shame - i rarely ever use trains. x) that exercise sounds like a really good idea thoughh, sounds like it'll really help with visualisation and getting studies to stick. :)
Oops, I missed a week! :/ i know i say this all the time, but last week was so incredibly hectic i barely had time to lift a pencil, even though it was half term :/ going camping for half of it probably didn't help. resuming normal transmissions now though! twice weekly updates, yep yep.

Looking good! You're very right to wanna keep connected to your own spontaneous, non-study-oriented impulses -- those're why you're studying so hard in the first place, because you wanna become super powerful so that you can be super-confident in those explorations. Some people get lost in the maze of study, so overwhelmed by how much they don't know and so dominated by the visions of others, that they stop valuing and nurturing their own imaginations. Conversely, there are those who are aware of and fear that very scenario so much that they shy away from any real study, only to find themselves crippled by the lack of an organized understanding of the basics.
Keep striving to absorb and process and produce with that perfectionist zeal, but drop yourself all sorts of slack. Those two things are not actually at odds with each other, they help each other.

great portraits here in these last few posts. no crits from me because you are doing all the right things. Posting frequently is definitely the path to improvement so keep doing what you're doing! I think I'm 5 posts away from a 365 posts in the last year, and its helped me learn so much.

William b. Hand: man, your comment just made so much sense to me, so insightful. I think the thing i have the hardest time with isn't so much any of the facets of drawing or painting, it's finding the time to study it and finding a balance within the limited time i have. so yeah, thank you! :D
ThomasM: thankyou! yeah, productiveness in art output and posting is the way to go - i'm currently posting as much as my schedule will let me, sadly. :/
so yep, lets see what we got.
some hand studies - attacking those anatomical weaknesses, go!

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/hands4-7.jpg
an update on that acrylic still life - yes, it still looks shitty/ a mess. yes, it's taking forever to paint. (it doesnt help that to replicate the lighting, i can only paint when it's dark outside - and ive been too tired to stay up that long. xD)

so, ontop of my daily art goals which i never really make public other than a daily to-do list on my desk, i think im'a set weekly ones, which i'll post on here :) gotta keep pushing... so, by this time next sunday, i wanna have at least:
*50 hand studies (including the seven in this post)
*2 watercolour still lives.
let's see how this goes :)

okay, a little bit late for the twice-weekly mark, but some very last minute plans over the weekend prevented me from getting on the computer until late - i did attempt to upload, but i was falling asleep at the computer before they'd even all scanned. -pencil still life (fully rendered)
-watercolour photo study
right, this has basically made me late for college! gotta goo! 8D

had my first life drawing class last night. :D its not a class in the traditional sense of the word, there's no tutoring, you just come along with whatever materials you feel like using, sit down and draw. :)

watercolour photostudy. learnt alot, made alot of mistakes. need to do more of these.

pencil still life - hated the first and scrapped it halfway through. second got finished, needs better tonal range.

for next week;
20 figures (imagination and reffed - structure and proportion)
20 hands (imagination and reffed)
digital still life
watercolour study

March 27th, 2011, 06:10 PM
those watercolor studies are coming along, especially the last one, and the digital
self portrait is very good too. Oh and your color theory being non existent is a tad harsh, you have a complimentary color pallet, with the area in light saturated and the area in shadow desaturated, that is actually kinda advanced IMO.

SamC: wow man, thanks. :) i've been being motivated by your stuff for a while, so that made my day a little.
Satupeikko: Thankyou, i intend to!
wow, early update. productive, woo! :)
some sketchbook pencils im planning on colouring soon. trying to break away from/expand my usual subject matter with the first one, i never usually do environments from imagination; getting stagnant with what i usually do.

progress of a digital still life - im keeping track of the hours to see how (un)efficient i am. day one i was pretty happy with the amount of work i did on it (i had coffee that day, which might have helped...) but today, i spent more time on it and made less progress, and felt like i learnt less. :/ messing about with rendering.
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/progress-swansl.jpg
some figures; drew the first of each from ref, second more-or-less from memory, then went back and drew over in red to correct. trying to break my habit of 'studying' on autopilot and not actually learning.

no life drawing class this week :/ scheduling problems.

really really nice studies! I like the last one, good idea to draw over it again. I do the same thing, too much autopilot studies.

Hey there, nice sketches! I like that house you made in your most recent post, looks really interesting and will probably look awesome colored in! Out of all of your people drawings I think your self portraits look the best.

Kalin: Thank youu~ yeah, im looking forward to playing around with colour on it. hmm, i think that could be cause i'm having trouble applying what i learn from the self portraits? need to work on that perhaps x)
Arenyth: thanks! :) yeah, its a real problem, but its so easy to just zone out instead of focusing on what the study is trying to teach you. :/
hmm, is this gonna be three posts in a week? :D

I like how you're training your memory with the figure sketches and you seem to be doing well at it. Hand studies and self-portraits look good too and that digital still life looks like an excellent color study. Brush strokes could be simplified on the fabric of course but on the torsos of the goose or whatever they look good. Can't think of any real critique... I like how steady you are with the updates. Keep them coming!

Smuli: Thank you! yeah, stroke economy is a weakness for me - brush and pencil. I wanna focus on theory for now though, and attack that when i feel i have a firmer grasp on the basics :)
rest of the figures - the last five are from imagination (which explains why they're so shitty). That was frustrating; I hadn't picked up nearly as much as I thought.
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/fig14-20.jpg
hand studies - they were mostly drawn facing the opposite direction from the ref pic, to improve my eye/force myself to concentrate. the ones with a red dot were from imagination. (i did do 20, but i shut down the computer without saving the first two. i swear. :P)
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/hands3-20.jpg
watercolour study - did better than last week, still a long way to go. apologies for the bumpy paper, i'll use better quality/stretch it first next time.
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/wcphotostudy2.jpg
the sketch for the commission i mentioned a few posts back:
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/PICT0169.jpg
Went watching the sick puppies live on thursday night (they are fucking. amazing. live. Seriously.) and i kept noticing the way the coloured lights showed form and the absence of local colour, and i wanted to try it. no sketch, just blocked in the forms with paintbrush.
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/gig.jpg
lastly, yeah, my post-it doodles stack from work is slowly growing. :D
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/PICT0170.jpg
three posts this week! :D the reason i got so much done is i had no overtime this week, plus didnt have to work today, or go to college either... my first free day since the christmas holidays. next week wont be so kind to me :/ lots of overtime... so with that in mind, and the fact that i left myself little time for personal work despite having lots of free time, i'ma go easy on this weeks self-assignments:
20 figures - female (referenced and imagination
2 tonal character designs
:)!

Nibras: Thank you for the comment! I tried to return the favour, but for some reason it wont let me view your images :/
yeahh, updates might not go as planned for the next few weeks. I was reminded that my AS level exams are extremely close (my german speaking test is next week. no, i didn't realise this.) so that's gonna be stealing some of my art time for the time being.
i'ma still draw as much as possible, try and hit that twice-weekly updates, but there's no promises atm; and i'm gonna stop the weekly goals for now as well. I felt they were getting too restrictive anyway, although they were good for getting my drive going again.
anyways, have character design - demon mafia boss. x) not sure how i feel about this one.
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/chardesignmobdemon.jpg
and this weeks lifedrawing session - I tried using this really soft, smudgy chalk pastel for most of them, struggled the whole time, so im not really all that happy with most of these.
1 minute poses - these were hardd. good warm up though.

i mentioned a while back i was planning on a piece of neil gaiman's 'sandman' fanart... finally finished :) i wanted to use ink in a finished piece, so most of this is ink, with a bit of coloured pencil, glitter and the tiniest bit of watercolour and white gel pen:
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/39dreams.jpg
progress on this, im experimenting with using sepia ink as an underpainting for watercolour... should be interesting :) a bit messy, quite a few mistakes, but im still learning how to control the medium:
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/up-voodoohut.jpg
and 20 female figures - really tried to focus on structure here. i think it started to begin to make a bit of sense around number.. 9 or so. like before, the ones with a red dot next to them are from imagination... pretty obvious from the quality ;)

Satupeikko: Thankyouu! :)
I missed my twice-weekly quota this week :/ only one post, i'm afraid. i do have an explanation though - my computer went rather spazzy and decided it couldnt find my profiles/documents/program files/music/pictures. and that i would be much happier on a temp account.
But, my boy came round and fixed it, so it's all good now. :) hopefully, resuming normal transmissions.
this weeks life drawings, first a mix of 1 and 5 minute ones done in pen (to try and get better line-quality/braver lines.) It's probably veryy obvious which is which.
then, a 15 minute and a 40 minute, both done in conte crayon, which i used for the first time and lovedd.

It was pointed out at my lifedrawing that my feet, hands and the proportions of those to the rest of the body are my most obvious problems. so, feet - 3 pages of brdgeman, one of quick 15-30 second gesturals from posemaniacs.com and pixelovely.com, to just get down the general shape.

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/feets.jpg

not so much in the way of original work for this post, im afraid; all i have is this, a crappy little digi-doodle done whilst i wait for some paint to dry:
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/doodlr.jpg
these were done from photos after reading this blog post (http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/2011/04/cure-for-middle-value-mumbling.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+blogspot%2FNVaYV+%28Gurney+Jo urney%29):

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/midtonemuddying001.jpg
more feet - imagination, photo studys and bridgeman (plus tiny little life studies done at the fathers - its unbelievable how much people move when all they're doing is playing videogames :|)

20 min (messed this one up bad - all the angles/tones went wrong)
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/PICT0185.jpg
and 40 min. the rest were done in charcoal, this was red/black/white conte:
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/PICT0192.jpg
Edit: forgot to mention, this post marks the 1 year anniversary of this sketchbook :D in reflection, i can see improvement, but not as much as i'd like. (i think that would have been the case no matter how much i improved though, tbh.) here's to another, better year !!

tiiiiny post this time. :/ i can't wait till i'm free of college for the summer, in a few weeks, and can just draw and paaaaaint. i still have a week left of the easter holidays... but this is my last free day. D: how does that work.
photo study, and then one from my head, trying to apply what i learnt about that lighting/those skin tones.

shit, i missed a whole week. :| working monday, tuesday, camping out in a sheep-infested field wednesday-friday, working saturday, sunday. on top of that, exam revision and a shit-load of personal stuff came up. (excuses, excuses....)
this is what i pathetically managed to squeeze in.
some still lives in oil; it's such a shame, cause i love(!) painting in oils, but even with the window open i can only do it for a few hours before the turps make me incredibly drowsy... does anybody have any tips for that, by any chance? the only thing i can think of is painting in the garden, when it's summer.

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/stilllifeoilcandle.jpg
this unfinished, failed acrylic still life; this is how far i got before i knocked over the set up. ahh well, it was taking too long anyway; it was a steep learning curve, but by halfway through i felt like i was banging my head against a wall; i needed to start afresh.

The still lives are looking really great!
I actually use water mixable oil colors, where you don't need turpentine, only water. I like them really much, and I recommend you to try them if the turps is giving you hard times :)
smuli
May 18th, 2011, 04:45 PM
You could also try using odorless mineral spirits. It being odorless doesn't mean it wouldn't feel weird to breathe it though but they're still better than real turpentine I guess, though they tend to be weaker solvents.
Nice figure sketches and anatomy studies. I also really like the watercolor effects on the Sandman fanart and the vivid colors and detail on the chewing gum study. Keep them coming!

smuli: that's a good idea.. i think im going to have to go on an experiment with them :) thank you!
wooden_mango: thanks! (:
so yeah, embarrasing long absence... but i have my reasons... sort of. :/ exams were just suddenly there, and i had to spend so much time studying to make up for not doing it in the rest of the year... and then the evening after my final exam, when i sat down to finally, finally paint again, i turned on the computer... and it failed. completely fucked. oh dear lord.
thankfully, my genius of a boyfriend was able to fix it and its running better than ever now, so... time to get back into the game :D it's half term, so im cautiously attempting a near-daily update schedule and seeing how it goes.

The museum sounds like a great idea! (I need to brush off some 'real life drawing' rust that I have since I messed up with reapplying to life drawing D8)
You've got some great life studies here, do the bone studies help at all? I confess I'm not great at keeping with individual bones, maybe muscles and basic skeleton form, but not much more D8
Keep it up! <3

MightyApplejacks: you should try them - they're alot more enjoyable than i remember as a kid x) tbh, i'm probably going far more in depth than i need to by studying every individual bone - but, i feel its helping me with convincing myself of the weight and underlying structure of the body, i think... besides, all knowledge is good knowledge right? :)
finally got this bitch finished :D teen challenge entry. feel really weird about this one - i can clearly see places where i've improved, but im still really not happy with it because it's reminded me of the incredible amount i still have to learn. i need to study colour, dammit!

okay, long absence was too long, again.
all of my time was being spent on the commission i mentioned a while back, which suddenly had to be done for today - and which i thankfully managed to finish at something like 2:00 am this morning:

I apologise for the crappy photo, actually doesnt look this bad irl, but i have the shittiest cheap digital camera known to man, which refuses to take photos which aren't blurry unless the flash is on. -.-
i have got other stuff to upload, including two life-drawing sessions, anatomy studies and sketchbook pages, but they'll have to wait for now - me and the boy are house-sitting for his sister, and i'm pretty sure there's no internet connection (and definately no scanner) over there.
see you monday! :)

Good figure sketches and I really like the colors on the heroes screen cap study. The drawing of the children must've been a load of work but the polished shadings look worth it. The knee and bone studies look great and looks like you put thought to them but try to sketch them from head too to see what you've learned. Keep up the good work!

huge thanks for the comments, i'll reply back to them on the next post.
so, my computers bust. again.
I'm currently in the town library, using a computer running a crappy old version of IE that won't work on half the websites i need (including my email inbox.) my boyfriend is working on fixing the computer, but tbh i think my poor old Fossil is just giving out the death rattle - it's breaking more and more often lately. even if he does fix it, there's a large chance i'ma have to have my hard drive wiped and lose all my files.
that said, it looks like i'm not going to be around here much. i actually have loads of stuff to scan (funny how my computer goes when i finally have tons of free time), so i'm using this as an opportunity to focus on my traditional painting/drawing skills and do tons of life drawing.
if i'm honest, the thing that's crippling me most is being unable to get references for personal work - or studies, either - without coming out to the library, which charges 10p for a black and white copy, doesn't do colour and doesnt have a slot for the sd card from my digital camera.
But meh, obstacles... i'll overcome. i'll cope. (:
so, TL;DR - with a bit of luck i might be back uploading on here soon... if not, see you in a few months when i can scrape enough money together for a new computer. and sorry for the image-free post.
be back asap - keep killing it! ;D

@Smuli: yeah, the kids painting took aages x) speed's not a strong point... and neithers applying studies, that's something i always skimp on :/ thanks for the heads up, i'll try and keep that in mind :)
@beeston: thankyou! haha, me too - i'm far too selfish, i dont post in other peoples sb enough. x) i need to do something about that...
@invinciblewombat: thankyou :)
so, computers fixed again :D not sure how long for though... i really need a new one, i think my old fossil's worn out tbh, she's been reliable for years now... but she's lovely and functional for the moment :)
btw, this post is huge. sorry about that (trust me, it was a bitch to scan and edit... the reason why this wasnt uploaded last week). not uploaded in a while, so things kinda... built up.

GURL, you've been kicking your ass, that is an amazing amount of drawing/studies there XD Your going to be an anatomy master if you keep that amount of anatomy studying up XD!!! I like them :> Apply what your learning to memory exercises and see how much you retain. Also, nice to see you work with acrylic, the penguins are my favorite, I feel like you really captured the form of the blue one. You already have a good understanding of values, paint really big and mix a lot of paint. At art supply stores, look out for materson's sta-wet paint palate, it will keep your paints wet so you can mix large amounts and go ape shit 8D <3 I can also recommend some good books for painting as I need to get some myself >:00!! KEEP PAINTING BORING STILL LIVES. I WISH WE COULD PAINT TOGETHER >:0!!!!

viki oh: haha, thank you for that comment!! x) yeahh, a major block i have with painting is that i'm too conservative and worried about wasting paint, so i think painting big is a great idea - plus it sounds fun :D thanks for the recommendations too, i'm always open to book suggestions - although, penniless atm x) i've been wanting to buy James Gurneys painting books for a while now... :/
some stuff from the past few days, along with one or two things i forgot to post last time.
quick doodle/practice - got part one of whit brancha's environments download (http://theartdepartment.org/downloads/whit-brancha-environmental-speedpainting) last night, and although i havent watched it yet, i wanted to play with his brushes :) used ref, but loosely - changed the composition and tried to emulate the colours/shapes.

@satupeikko: thank you! :)
sorry ive been absent, and that ive so little to post for it - college is finished for everyone in england now, and i seem to be spending a lot of time catching up with friends and with my boyfriend - not time i'm regretting, but i really need to learn to knuckle down and not waste what little free time i have by getting distracted. and on top of that, lots of overtime at work...
so, updates are still going to be a little slow for at least the next week, possibly a few.. im'a try to counter that though. for now, have some anatomy, a crappy unfinished photostudy, and my current progress on the teen challenge piece.

been a bit out of it this week.. :/ discovered my motivation is very tied into my mental state, and if there's something playing on my mind, even if i try and pretend there isn't it shows in my art.
starting to feel like kicking my own ass again though now! :D i think i'ma take it easy for the rest of the week, not force myself to art but draw when i want, do studies if i really feel like it... it's pretty busy anyways, so i wouldnt get much done as it is. then next week starting monday i can jump right back into it - especially since i have a week off work and the boyfriend is away for the whole week, so i can see myself having a lot of free time xD
a crappy screencap i cropped cause i couldn't bring myself to finish; values are alll messed up, and its rather off proportions-wise since i didnt draw it out first. still, i used defiled_vision's idea of actually analysing a study, making notes as you do it and i feel it helped oh-so-much, i learnt so much about colour relativity :) like all the shades in this are just different shades of blue, even the parts that look warmer and even flesh coloured are just less saturated blues in reality.

@Kerah: i wouldn't say iron-like... i wish, but this past week is proof otherwise x) but, thankyou very much! :D
so, kinda fell off the wagon this last week - whole bunch of reasons, not gonna get into. but i will say, since i started taking my art seriously, i've always unconsciously viewed taking a break from it as sort of a weakness - a sign i wasn't dedicated enough to make it. this week, however, the state of mind i was constantly in, i decided i had no choice, and that from wednesday for the rest of the week, i'd take it easy - sure, make art if i felt like it, but just relax and not constantly be either forcing myself to study or be feeling guilty for not studying.
i discovered my motivation came back in waves. i found that i still noticed the way shadows fell, or light hit an object, or how good a movies concepts and lighting was - regardless of the fact i wasn't trying to stay focused on art. i found that i still ended up drawing and painting - not as much at first, but as my enjoyment came back, more- and that i was also learning tons just doing little sketches from imagination. and before the days i'd alotted myself were up, i was itching to get started again. :D
so yeah, with any luck, im back. B) made a few changes to the way i work too, ill go into those on another post, already rambled enough.
on with the art!
greyscale screencap, since after watching just part 1 of brad rigneys download which i got in the sale, i realised how much i needed to work on my values. daaaymn that guy can paint.
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/armageddonscreenie.jpg
i also did a quick doodle afterwards to apply what id learnt, but it was ohsocrappy. :) felt like i learnt a ton though - made notes as i did it again, analysing it, its mindblowing how much that helps you realise and retain the knowledge. :D
more hands - hogarth, ref, imagination

okay, looks like another hiatus... computer is well and truly FUBAR'd. :/
R.I.P, fossil...
incredibly motivated despite this, really enjoying diving into traditional media... getting more done without the internet as a distraction too. just wish i hadn't lost all my files... especially my music/podcasts. i've had to nab the radio from downstairs so i dont paint in silence. i was getting a pretty nice reference library up too...
ahh well, que sera and all that :)
see you when i can (eventually) afford a replacement... keep arting! :D

Hey jessi - i notice youve been hammering the Anatomy, and i do mean hammering it lol. Its looking so much more natural aswell than the last time i stopped by. i see a couple of different refference books aswell. i have done a couple of studies from that ImagineFX book aswell - your stuffs looking a lot smoother though :). keep on rockin.

@samC: damn, thankyou! means alot from you, man :) and believe me, i'm trying.
@dog-faced: yeah, i was - anatomy's hard xD it's gonna take a helluva lot more hammering before i even start to feel comfortable with it. thanks :)
so, thought id post to prove i wasn't dead, just extended absence is becoming very extended.
i'm well on the way to getting a new machine, only just over £100 to go before i can afford it.
but, atm i'm finding it hard to find any time to do personal art or studies, between college, college work, work at my job, and trying desperately to squeeze in time with the boyfriend (and often, sadly, failing. :/)
to give some idea, i spend 18 hours a week at college. they also say that i should spend the exact same amount of hours at home working on college work just to keep up (and they're not wrong. falling behind is scarily easy).
they also say that we shouldn't work more than 10 hours at any part time job outside of college... last week alone, i worked 32.
but i'm taking any hours i can in order to pay for the new computer. any spare hours i have between work, college and the boy is spent scrabbling to catch up with my college course.
despite meeting some pretty awesome people on this course, i cant wait to finish college next summer and get back to studying and arting and actually learning.
but until then, im afraid things are going to stay awfully quiet on here.

finally got my laptop :D t'is a beaut. i'm so busy at the moment im finding it hard to find time to art outside of crappy college work at all, never mind upload it to CA, so updates are gonna be sporadic at best until i'm finished with college. okay, due to some personal crap, ive managed to get a bit of routine going where i can get about 1-2 hours on my own art, on some days. gonna start uploading regular here again, aiming for a weekly schedule, probably sundays. missed this place. :')
stuff from this year more or less:
shoes i just finished painting:

finished digi paint
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/TheColdestGirlinColdtownCAsize.jpg
two screencaps for colour/lighting study, one digi and the other acrylic (crappy scan, sorry.) digital took under an hour, acrylic took much longer (and looks worse!)

Congrats for the tattoo internship! The facial details in oils look great, I really like the skin tones. Your hand sketches look great and the practice has surely paid off. On heads though, sometimes in twisted ankles the features look slightly distorted. Watch out for shortening the face in vertical direction especially. Would be great to see you doing to heads what you did to hands, loads of quicker sketches focusing on the structure but it's just a suggestion, I know you're busy. Keep up the good work!

this is a glorious sketchbook! You really know how to put weight into forms. As far as I can tell some of your proportions are skewing a little, but most of the time not, and practice will eliminate that as it already seems to be doing. Great examples of using good quality anatomy studies and applying it to more abstract drawings and stuff. I will have to stalk you now :] muchos inspiration.

only one day late this week! i'm getting better, haha. teeny tiny update since my posts are usually filled out with college work lately, and most of my college work this week has involved writing... annotations, statement of intent, personal statement, dissertation. gah i hate college. just 70 days left and counting!!

Hey Jessibelle,
you have a strong degree of studying! what is your ultimate aspiration in art? I think once purpose is clear, then priority kicks in. I totally understand what you mean when you were going to school and felt like you were just "rushing" to hand in crap just to pass exams you didn't really care about- although in the art scene it's not about exams, but more-so final projects.
Either way, I totally understand, because in the same sense, rushing to get good marks for final projects you're not totally interested in creates some kind of weak atmosphere on the artist's part. I felt the same way. I dropped out of animation not too long ago- mostly because I realized I didn't want to be an "actual" animator. (Which is essentially what the course is training you for!). I then kicked into illustration, but I wasn't feeling that course either. Some might say I'm stubborn,
but I "sinceerely" feel the need for self-study, as oppose to handing in (what seems to me) rushed, and unworthily crafted assignments. I know they are supposed to be directed towards the portfolio, but still-- for me, having a lack of purpose creates misguidance and apathy. So I can at least somewhat relate to what experience you were going through at college.
My purpose is a little more clear now, so there IS at least some prioritizing going on, but no worries! all of that will work itself out in God's time!
I just came here to encourage you! keep sticking at it! find out what kind of mark or position you need to take with this art thing! and just do you!
peace!

@viki oh: ahh thankyou! :) it doesn't feel like i'm improving at all atm (feels like i'm getting worse, if anything) so that was good to hear :)
@poetry man: woah man, thanks for taking the time out to write all that! :') t'was very encouraging. it's good to know i'm not the only one who feels that disconnection with school work... the big fear for me is that that feeling will continue if i end up working in the industry, so i'm just hoping that it's only the whole formal education thing i have an issue with, heh. I always say my goal is to be a working professional illustrator or concept artist... but tbh, i think my ultimate career goal is just to have a fulfilling art job that i love and that pays the bills without the need for me to have a supplimentary income from elsewhere. :) but thankyou! i'm glad you know where you're going, so you keep at it too :D

Those hand studies look gorgeous! I like how you applied them to photo studies, in some the fingers look slightly too bent but otherwise the construction looks good in all of them. Nice to see you sketched some tilted head studies too. :) The heads on the plane studies look slightly squished but the photo reffed ones look good.
As others have said, nice work on the lively skin tones on the watercolor portraits! I find watercolors to be a good medium for learning how light behaves because you can make small adjustments with thin layers which I think pushes your eye to be more demanding with color accuracy.
On this character (http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/apprentice-final-wipshot.jpg), I like the skin tones, pose and anatomy in general, but the arm and legs look a bit too thick to the left side. Textured background makes it difficult but you could try get into the habit of painting background/negative spaces onto the foreground when necessary, rather than erasing the layer. Just a matter of taste of course but it gives a more painterly look than layers with corrected edges.
From the color thumbnails on the last post, my favorites are the two bottom ones because they show prospect of a good mood. On the top left one, the darker values are so close to each other that it's hard to make out the figures and on the top right one, the light spots look a bit distracting but it could be a start of a nice daylight scene.
Keep them coming!

@smuli: ahh, thanks for taking the time to write out that comment/those crits, it's much appreciated. :)
yeah, i know what you mean about some of the hand studies looking off, most of them don't look right to me either; gonna keep grinding till they do :) and i plan to start some from imagination when i get more of the hang of the photo reffed ones.
yeah, i should really do studies in watercolours/gouache more... that's on the list of things to do after i finish college! i see what you mean about the character now... i was trying to make her seem more muscled but don't think i pulled it off. should have used more ref. also, im not really sure what you mean, in the bit about negative space/bg+fg/layers? and i already started before i read this, on the first colour thumb... :/ im possibly scrapping the piece though.
thanks again!!
didnt make two updates this week :/ didnt have a single free day... and it's back to college tomorrow. :(
only 41 days left now!

About the painting negative spaces too thing, what I meant was an approach of painting everything on a single layer rather than keeping the subject on a different layer and cleaning the edges. I find it helps think about the negative spaces more and that could help out with things like getting the width of limbs right (and give a more painterly look because with traditional mediums, you can't refine layer edges with an eraser). Sorry if I made it sound like a critique, it's more like just another thing to consider. :)
Good hand studies and I like your workspace with all the pictures, I should take a leaf out of your book at that.

I agree with Smuli, your workspace looks just awesome. A nice and cosy feeling, isn't it?
I have enjoyed looking at your hand studies, but you repeatedly seem to make the thumb smaller/thinner than what I feel it should look like (maybe my inner thumb compass is off?), especially in the last and first pages of the hands you did - Are some of those from imagination? Just curious, because the second page of hands looks really great in comparison.
Also good job on the acrylic!
Cheerio!

@smuli: ahh okay. now I get it :) thanks for clarifying that. I'm giving this little piece of advice a whirl atm, seems to be working much better - I'll upload the picture next week, should be done by then.
@kerah: Thankyou! None of the hands are from imagination, they're alternately hogarth and photoref - are you referring to the ones copied from hogarth? he deliberately stylises the fingers/thumb to show where the knuckles lie... I'll try and keep an eye on proportions anyways, I know it's a weakness of mine. :) Thanks again!
I did update last week, I swear! Then I come back now and the post isnt here... Oh, CA. :/
so you can have last weeks update :) anything I have lying around Ill just add to next weeks post.

some costume concepts for a warrior character, another oil portrait, the process and a w.i.p portrait that's currently sitting in college. i know the last one is riddled with flaws and mistakes, gonna try and fix them up a bit, but atm i'm just churning this stuff out to get it over with.

i'm gonna increase activity on here very soon, maybe not this week as its still pretty busy (tying up loose ends at college, writing evalutions, artist statements, preparing for the exhibition, 3 full days at work, a trip into manchester, doctors appointments, and hopefully i'll finally get some time to chill...); but by next week definitely. :D

Been holding off posting here till I had something to show that wasn't just studies. So.. here's a little thankyou piece for my mum. Face referenced *loosely* from a shot of Radeo Suicide. (http://suicidegirls.com/girls/Radeo/)

Decided my pencils need a lot of work; I feel a sort of disconnect when I draw from imagination, and I don't like it. :') I know alot of it is a lack of structural knowledge of what I'm drawing, but I also think it has something to do with me dismissing pencil in order to get onto more exciting mediums. :')
So expect alot of pencil work in the next week or so. Bought some new mechanical pencils and leads :D Gonna really grind 'em down.
Aaaand studies! Photo-reffed figure drawings, legs from Bridgman/photo-ref, and a few from imagination thrown in (though it's probably obvious which ones they are... )

Still repping the way of the pencil. Waiting on an order of bristol board to start the next piece... excited :D I've never tried bristol before, haha.
Some sketchbook, some fabric studies, some studies after Wes Burt. Guy really knows how to use a pencil haha, learnt so much from those.

Jess, your stuff deserves more comments and more attention!
I really like coming back to your sketchbook and to see it updated:)
Really delicious pencils in the last update, I especially like how you did this one (http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/Image10.jpg).
There is a softness and accuracy to your pencils that I'm unable to achieve when drawing from imagination, I'd really love to. Do you work somewhat slowly to achieve this? I'm curious!
Anyway, keep the studies and the fun stuff piling up! :D
Jessibelle
June 3rd, 2012, 08:21 PM
@Kerah: Ahh, Thankyou! :D In regards to the pencils question, I think it's mostly just practice - I do go pretty slowly I guess; the only time I'm speedy with it is in the early stages, I'll block it in or throw up the gesture really really lightly just to figure out where the drawing is going overall. I think it's about trying to use as few lines as possible, trying to put the right lines down first try - at least, that's what I'm trying to train myself to do right now. :') So hard!
Current WIP - working on Bristol Board for the first time. It's absolutely godly! so smooooth
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/Image-4.jpg
Sketchbook pages, inc. very messy plans+quick studies for that piece ^
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/DSC_0670.jpghttp://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/DSC_0669.jpg
Aaand studies.
I think I'm finding my main dissatisfaction with the way I sketch boils down to me being far too hesitant with the pencil - I wont put down bold lines or marks unless I force myself, and I have to work up to it, so the end thing lacks clarity and cleanness/smoothness. It's a whole 'lack of confidence' thing that comes through in all my work I think, sadly :( So I'm gonna be doing studies and sketches in less forgivable media for a while - pen and ink all the way. :')
Self-portrait - how do people get clean hatchings? How?!?
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/Image3-1.jpg
Some ink face studies - most are reffed from tumblr, hence the abundance of stretched ears ;)

Just been browsing your sketchbook, love your work :)
I know what you mean about being hesitant with the pencil, at the moment I'm trying desperately to force myself out of the habit of doing lots of short jagged lines instead of doing one long clean one. I guess using inks more will help with this, can't really be hesitant with them! Reminded me of This (http://alrasyid.deviantart.com/gallery/) guy, he uses really harsh brush strokes, very minimalistic!
Keep up the good work :)

@DanBK: Thankyou! :') and Thanks for the link aha, his stuff is ace, I really admire people who can work oils like that, it's something which escapes me x) everytime.
Okay, I know this isn't really classed as daily since monday ended nearly three hours ago... but since I haven't slept yet, I still consider this to be yesterday, okay.
Spent most of today finishing this off. I really tried with this one, and there are parts which I can see it paid off, which is really satisfying... I can also tell that my pencils still need much more work, buuuut I miss digital painting. :') So pencil's gonna get dropped just a tiny bit for a while.

Also, just been watching Snow White and the Huntsman... Some plot points were a bit niggly; but, seriously stunning visuals, seriously. (And I'm not just talking about Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron, surprisingly, although still... unf.) I'm feeling so inspired right now... Lots of ideas for paintings :D I love that films can have this effect on me. I advise any one else to go watch it!

So.. Bit of a shorter post today, due to me not going to bed till 6am this morning, thinking I wasn't in work till tomorrow... then getting woken at 10:30 by a phone call telling me I had my days wrong, and should have been in half an hour ago. Finally had breakfast and got started working at about 5:00pm when I got home :') Bigger post tomorrow, promise!
Some more ink face studies, this time with a pretty thick brush pen... this was interesting, more challenging than with a brush since I couldn't get any subtle or thin lines, so I had to think even more carefully about where the lines were placed. Many mistakes but good exercise!!
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/Image4-1.jpg
And sketchbook pages - all done in pen/brush pen. With the second page I was thinking about how I've had this sketchbook for two years, looking at the first page and thinking, I really haven't improved as much as I should have in that timespan... especially when drawing from imagination. So I redrew the first few sketches in this thread. I was right, not nearly as much improvement as I'd like, not much at all, (although these were rushed quite a bit, and in pen...) Still gotta work harder!!!

Not much today either, considering I woke up about 2pm, then spent most of the rest of the day cleaning my room and getting my head around sculptris... I remember why I never used to keep up with daily updates. Work too slow :/ Gonna keep trying though!
So, a photostudy and a skull done in sculptris. First time properly sculpting digitally, and I can see it's benefits for understanding form, but this annoyed me so much when I got onto the smaller details it might be a while before I try again, haha. It's was fun to do most of it though :)

Great ink and pencil work, I especially like this portrait (http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/Image3-1.jpg) - the forms look very solid and you nailed a good expression too. Also, great lighting and overall use of graphite for different effects on the illustration on post 216! Love the dramatic lighting, variety of materials and how well everything reads.
The snow white piece has good storytelling and a clear point of interest, nice rendering on the face. The compo leads the eye out of the picture the left though, with all the lines leading there, the elbow being cut off and the hair forming a tangent with the border. I did a quick paintover (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v216/smml/jessibelle-snowwhite-paintover.jpg) with more space on the left, hope you don't mind. Rest of the changes I made:
-removed the other branch on the upper left because it was leading eye to the border (best to avoid too much stuff happening on the edges)
-erased some of the hair from the top to get rid of the tangent with the branch
-made the flowing effect of the hem of the dress more linear and gave some slack to the creases on the sleeve, it looked like someone was pulling it from the lower edge
-straightened the deltoid/upper arm a bit and removed the tangent of the shoulder and hair behind it.
Keep up the good work!
Jessibelle
June 11th, 2012, 05:17 PM
@smuli: Ahh, thanks for taking the time to do the paintover! It looks much better afterwards :) I probably won't go back and fix it myself, simply cause I lost all enthusiasm for it since I was so disappointed at how it turned out... But it's good to understand the reason for my disappointment, aha. I'll make an effort to keep a closer eye on the composition and tangents in the next one :D
Some more hour-long tonal studies and anatomy studies, and some thumbnails for a commission I've been asked to do. Feeling a bit unmotivated today.. gah. It'll pass, hopefully. Just need to get stuck into a piece again!

Fell a bit behind on updates this week, bit busy - college exhibition, fathers day, working the last week at my current job whilst doing paperwork/induction for a new one :) (Plus last night was spent getting very drunk to celebrate... which I regret doing incredibly now, for various reasons.)
Bit of a dull update, some studies I managed to do - anatomy studies, and some tonal acrylics (one from life and one movie screencap). I feel like I struggle more and it's more of a challenge to do studies in traditional media, and I'm working with the theory that bigger challenge = learn more. Plus it stops me dropping into autopilot and forces me to actually concentrate.
Still got sketchbook pages to post.. ahh. I'll just do a big dump-post of them soon. :)

Felt I was getting a bit stale and monotonus on the leg studies, so I decided it'd be better to focus on different aspects each week. This week is torsos :) Lets learn dem abs!

I was (before last week) aiming for mostly daily updates; but this new job, as much as I like it, has unpredictable hours and when you combine that with my unpredictable sleeping patterns... heh. I may lose track of days. But I am setting myself a target of updating every two days at least, let's see how that goes :')

Like I said, update every two days... although I've slept once, so it seems like one day to me :')
Spent monday night painting this up... A birthday present for my dad, big Bruce Lee fan.

(with a little camera-phone shot underneath for comparison... this is why my sketchbook pages always look so crap, this is how bad my camera phone pictures are.)
Work-in-progress that I'm working on for about half an hour here and there, whenever I have time between stuff... first of two parts. Practising tonals. Long way to go.

Most of the stuff I've got from the past two days (or, one day for me) isn't worth scanning, so I'll just drop the finished version of this here for now.

Pretty big post; I've been too lazy/busy to scan everything in, so it's kept building. :') In my defence, I've finally bought a proper digital camera (No more crappy camera-phone photos!) and I was waiting for that to arrive for the sketchbook/oils stuff.
Unfinished oil's practice - gonna be doing alot more of these; I'm fascinated by oils, I love them and wanna get into doing more with them. :) Especially whilst it's still warm enough to leave the window open as ventilation, haha. The heart is a study for a much bigger commission.

This life drawing (http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/Image14.jpg) looks spot on! I like the shadow accents and overall solid feel! The torsos studies of the last sheet also look very correct despite one being a bit elongated, studies are paying off it seems.

@smuli: Thankyou! It's just a shame that's the only life drawing session I could get in. :')
@SamC: Thankyouu :)
Didn't mean to be gone for so long... life's just been crazy, starting a new job that's just taken over my life practically, haha. Trying to get into some sort of stable routine.. My body really doesnt do routine. :') I have more stuff to upload than this, I'll put up the rest in the next few days and hopefully be updating more regularly.
Finished personal piece, anatomy studies and another unfinished oils study.

Aaaand this upload brings us back up to date. :')
Some sketchbook pages (with some lifedrawing from starbucks and the staffroom)
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/sketchbookupload.jpg
Some shots of what I'm working on atm - big-ass canvas painting, a commission for a friend's band. Did the underpainting in ink since the song it's supposed to be illustrating is actually called "Ink My Soul" (at the moment.) This thing is the biggest thing I've painted, easily A1... time consuming, but unexpectedly fun.
http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh84/Juno_C8/inkmysoul_process.jpg
Also, because I've just remembered - my friend makes his own music... If you like listening to ambient/electronic/chillstep/space-y kind of stuff, you should definitely check it out. I actually think it makes really good music to just zone out and paint to (and I'm not just saying that for the shameless plug, haha, honest.)

I was gonna upload this last night, buuut I came home from work after midnight, stole some of my drunk mother's pizza, and passed out instead. :') Also, my scanners not working atm, so I can't upload anatomy studies...
Here's where I'm up to on the huge canvas commission:

Sketchbook page, and a little quick colour study for a traditional piece I'm planning (as a contest entry):

Love coming across sketchbooks that have loads of study in them - gets me all inspired! I'd say thus far I love your oil studies - they have something about them that your digital works lack. Might be in the way you do them - digital is horrible for being able to just get in there and noodle with details before you should, yet your oils have this great sense of freshness of brushstroke. Could be worth paying conscious attention the next time you do an oil study how you put down the strokes, and try and replicate that with your digital stuff.
And on a random note, I love the really dark red fingers on your latest teen challenge piece - something about that coupled with the frost subject that tells a story for me.

@netxhunter: Thanks! :)
@zephyri: Thankyouu~ :D I've looked up to your work for years, so you have no idea how much that comment means. :') Yeah you're right, i think I have a bad habit of trying to over-blend everything digitally, which is alot harder to do in oils... I also move the paintbrush very differently to how I use the wacom pen, never really noticed till you mentioned it. I'll definitely be looking into that as soon as I have time, thankyou for the critique! :)
Finished contest entry... I hate the scan of this. It's so much smoother irl, buuut you'll just have to take my word on that. :')

I'm putting together a logo for my cousin's new cake-making business, it's been fun. These were the sketches I sent across to her, I'm currently making colour mock-ups of the third one down since that's what she chose:

aaand the usual anatomy studies. Arms arms arms.

Hey Jess, your pencils are getting much more sweeter than my own. I can't let THAT happen! :)
Looking at those arms studies, they look so precise and the shading looks really sweet. Wish I could see those in a bigger format.
Cool logos as well, I really loved the text on the top left one - what do you think of the combo of that text and the option she chose? Just musings :)
One last thing before clicking the post button - it's probably too late for that contest piece, but check it for proportions. It looks a little askew. Just a little.
Anyway, Peace and Toast!

Hey thanks for the comment! The pencil studies look really nice and smooth good job on those. Are you doing studies from memory along with the observational ones though? I can't tell XD if you are then great, if you aren't you need to to make sure the things you're learning stay in your brain.
Also I think you should draw a ton of skulls and heads, your understanding of the head's construction isn't good enough. In your contest piece for example according to the position of her eyes the nose should probably be approaching profile view, possibly breaking the contour of the face. That's the position the nose is in when the far eye is touching the edge of the face. oh, and while I'm at it the perspective of the eyes and chin don't match.
Perspective and construction, boring and basic, I know. But keep practicing the basics and you'll be as great as you want! good luck :)

@Kerah: Ahh, thankyou! yeah, I sorta felt like anatomy studies were taking over my sketchbook, so that's why they're so small, sorry :') About the logo.. hadn't really thought about it tbh, I'd only made the text that way in the first one so that it stood out better against the cake... And she seems happy with the logo/text combination, so that's what matters. :)
@Vertical: Ahh I'm doing bits from memory, but not really enough, if I'm honest. :') I should change that pronto... Been mostly familiarising myself with the muscles through repetition atm.
You're completely right about the head thing; should have looked at the damn sketch in a mirror, aaah. I'll start jamming on heads pretty soon. Thankyou for the crit! :D
Little update, working most of the weekend, and some time was spent painting that big canvas (which isn't gonna be uploaded til it's finished now.)
Anatomy studies, sketchbook pages (batgirl and darth vader-girl are photostudies from suicidegirls) and the finished logo.

@Satu: Ah, thankyou! Um, the repetition does help an awful lot, especially if you're trying to do it from memory each time... Good luck with your anatomy studies! :)
Been laying off uploading till I finished this... the beast that's been taking up all my time. -.- Finally done... Crappy photo though, sorry about that.

That's about a2 size. Completely ate my white paint.
Some sketchbook pages - things in pen are photostudies, pencil are personal work. Trying to fill a page with photostudies every other day... been feeling a lot that my ideas are kinda... lacking. So these will be just random photos i come across on the internet, to build my visual library :')

That commission piece with oils is awesome! I love the strong impact of the comp, solid looking heart, how the cool colors pop up against the glow and how well everything is blended. Precise anatomy studies too as always and nice logo sketches!

That heart painting came out really tight! How's your routine and everything now that college is over? Just wanted to highlight something I see you doing with faces from your imagination quite a bit, not sure if you see it or not. Took one of the paintings above as an example, they look a little skewed. You can fix this by having a strong centre line in the construction phase, and trying to keep everything balanced along it. Worth studying some Loomis heads if its something you're struggling with.Keep it up
