P.O.W.! Challenge 40
Deadline: Sunday, April 25, 2010, 11:59 pm anywhere in the world.

Topic: Playback...

This time out, you have a full month, because you're required to do a cover SUITABLE FOR RACK DISPLAY as well as the usual 2-6 pages, and because the topic is a bit weird this time out.

The title is "Playback" which refers to a person, male or female, any age, historical era, genre, etc., who can READ the past OR future like a tape recorder or CD player just by touching something or someone. Try to limit yourself here a bit, or you'll get into real trouble quickly. Narrow down specifically what the playback is, if there are any limitations, and how the "playback" is done--by touching any item, maybe touching only a certain of item, maybe only an environmental item like a huge rock or a building with varying degrees of accuracy, or maybe actually touching a real person maybe in a certain way. There might even be some item used as a talisman or "facilitator" by the "reader."

How much you want to go into the rationale or rarity/commonality of this ability is up to you. Obviously, the specific way you use this "ability" in a storyline is up to you.

You can interpret the art any way you wish, and the more creatively, the better. Any media. B&W or Color for the inside pages. The cover MUST be color, of course, and should contain an author/artist's name (yours) and some inconspicuous corporate/publisher chop mark that should say "CAPOW!" as we did for the cover competition.

You can present your solution as a minimum of TWO to a TENTATIVE maximum of SIX pages which adhere to standard comic specs as below...PLUS THE COVER...and, yes, you can have the first or last (or both) as a splash page if you want. You can go to additional pages without asking if you have a decent idea that requires it--just don't get too extreme on page counts.

REMEMBER: You don't have to have a complete comic to qualify for polling--if you're idea requires six pages or so, go for it, but if you realize you're running out of time, try to get at least TWO finished plus the cover by the deadline. That's all you need to qualify.

Standard Comic Book Size:

--Trim size: 6 5/8" x 10 1/4"
--Live art area: 6" x 9"
--Bleed size before trimming: 6 7/8" x 10 1/2" (1/8" in all directions)

This thread will be the place you ask questions on this challenge, trash talk, post WIPs and post your final art. See the READ THIS FIRST thread for all specs.

Good luck.

Because of the Easter holiday, this one is four weeks rather than the usual two weeks to see if it will allow more participation or just cause a lot more procrastination.

P.O.W.! Challenge 41 will be posted on Sunday Midnight, April 25, 2010.

************************************************** ***

A little note here for all of you who have supported the P.O.W.! Challenges...thankyewthankyewthankyew...

Just a reminder--those of you who didn't get a chance to finish exactly the way you wanted to, or ran into deadline problems, remember there is a sticky section where you can post your stuff when you do get it up to speed.

Probably won't have time to do this one. ( I know, lame. D8 ) But it inspired me something for a character I already created a long time ago.

anyone interested in writing for me? I'm not very experienced with continous comics, but I want to learn it. The one thing, I think I'm good at is character design.

Some pencil work. I got six pages planned and I am on schedule to get that much done up to inks, I think.

Oh! I almost forgot. Sorry for the cockeyed cropping. My ratassed HP (windows type) scanning program decided to auto correct rotation for me.:sadcheerleader: I'll fix it later.

This page is not quite done yet, but do I seem to be heading in the right general direction? This is my first serious attempt at digital inking, I think.

Edit: You're all so much in awe of my mastery that you are rendered speechless, I see. What I think I will do is give out about three pages plus the cover developed up to color, plus just pencils, words, and margins for three more pages.

I guess my guy sort of has a cross between petit mal epilepsy and a super power. Something just starts happening to him, and I guess the story arc would be about him making the best of it.

Okay, I am nowhere near as organised as arttorney but this is what I have so far. No dialogue added yet, (except in my head) and I am not too sure how many pages I want but I am making progress! :)

*edit* To save on page loading, I'm just updating this post. Added text and it looks like I'll need 6 pages just to get the point across. Phew. Busy busy. :)

*edit#2* Finished page 5, changed border colour on all pages and added page numbers. That is all for this update. Getting started on Page 6 or the cover, not sure which yet. I'm hoping to get all done in time.

Organized my ass. I'm just muddling my way through.

I hope you finish your pages, zimfin. I want to see how it comes out. It looks like I'll finish 6 to a pencil minimum, but the last three pages are getting done out of sequence because of my laziness.

Lol! I thought I was the one muddling my way through. I'm still just making this up as I go along!

These are my final pages. I'm sorry I could not find the time to do the 6th page, especially since a great deal of the story will be explained in it, but I really had no time. I will be continuing this for sure though, so you will get to see more.

Five pages and a cover is pretty damn good productivity for somebody who is probably doing this on the side.

I already got in about 8 hours of drawing today so I think I'll leave my page 4 with the pencils, but I aim to finish out about 8 pages total on this sucker in the future. (Waitin' to see Waterbird show up and blow us away with a last minute entry.)

Didn't make the deadline...but here's my entry anyway. My first finished one. I'm still learning as I go along here and I really enjoyed it. Sorry it's not drawn better, was aiming more for finishing the story and getting the flow right. Not sure I got it yet but it's early days yet.

Shoot! You got another eight to ten hours by my watch. Welcome aboard, Angel.

Thanks Arttorney I'll never get used to the time zone differences on here :) I like your story it's really suspenseful (is that a word?) :)

Zimfin Really nice front cover and your story sets up the scene nicely though I am interested to see what happens next :)

Just started this a couple of hours ago... It's sloppy, but... At least I finished. And I hope you enjoy. Everything's comic book standard size.

Thank you Angel. Yes, suspenseful is a word. In my mind at least, these guys get away after a little slow witted back and forth by Sutton (who hasn't seen the monster). After explanation, Sutton makes some remark about illegal aliens being above his pay grade and suggests they call "that Concrete Blonde chick in Homeland Security." Playback gets all pissed off because they have apparently had this argument before and he thinks Sutton is purposefully confusing Johnette Napolitano with Janet Napolitano to get a rise out of people.

Lol, sounds good to me arttorney. Looking forward to seeing all 8 pages.
Actually, now I think about it, does mine need some explanation for it to make enough sense? I did miss the last page, (or more) which would have explained all.....i think. As a result, I am not sure it really qualifies for the topic since the "playback" part is only just beginning when I end it.

Sigh..It took me lots of time to figure out story and gather references for this. When I finally managed to do this there was no time left. I might do the comic anyway even though it's after deadline :/
