View Full Version : Sorry for all the questions-- Housing, and entry times?

Is June the only time I can begin the program as a new student? Cause it would definitely be good if there were other times for admission for new students, like Jan of next year, or something like that. Obviously there will be further admission dates for new entering students, if the program wants to continue for a long time.
As for housing, are we expected to find our own housing in the on-site cities, such as Richmond, for me? Its just that the various posts I've read here have all been tangled together with dissimilar info and are a little confusing.
Also, will there be a way to complete the program while being on-site all the time? No online component at all?
My main problem is that I'm graduating in June, and classes apparently begin in June. So, I'll need to be in Florida one day, and attending school in Virginia in another. When exactly in June will classes begin, if this has been decided already?

TAD's first on ground work shop (I highly suggest) will be in KC, starting June 14th. We will also be doing another work shop in January to start the next semester. We highly suggest that you attend at least one workshop, especially at the start of our program. It will help clarify the delivery of our information! If you are attending a Pod the workshop could wait if needed.
We will have housing for our workshops and be able to suggest locations for housing if you are attending a Pod, but it will be up to you to secure your housing plans for the Pods.
You could complete your entire program in one of the Pods (or a combination of Pods). All of our curriculum is base on the online delivery. Even in the Pod you will be taking classes on line. The Pods offer professionals on site to assist you with learning how to apply the information in our classes. They will also offer the hands on component for life drawing and any other hands on approach that is needed (demonstrations).
I hope this clarifies your questions, thanks for the interest in our program and I hope to see you at TAD!

Thank you for your response, Mr. English; I apologize but I do have a few more...
Will there be times in the future where I could apply to TAD, for future semesters (or whatever they would be called)? And would these times have the same scholarship opportunities, like at the art schools? I am assuming its probably a tiered thing resembling something like what the U.S. Senate does. Elections every 2 years, but Senate members run for re-election every 6 years. Like, a tiered thing (I'm guessing).
Cause it would be beneficial if I could wait and take about a year or maybe a little less and focus on my own growth, really beef up my portfolio, and try again later (just not years later). And during this time I would also attend other programs designed to build me up so I may not need to go through the entire 30 month program (doubtful, but hey).
I kind of need that information now, because I'm on the verge of hitting 'SUBMIT', and me and my parents aren't sure whether it would even be feasible for me to do it for this 'segment', or this 'year' of school, if you want to say it like that. Hopefully you can make out what on earth I'm trying to ask. My mother is cringing at the $95 app fee (she's a huge penny-pincher, to be honest).
Thanks for taking the time, I know you guys are super busy.

You will be able to apply for the start of our second semester. There will be scholarships, but not near as many as we are distributing now!
I will suggest our VLP program and The Illustration Academy summer program (held in Richmond and KC). The programs are delivered by The Illustration Academy faculty and will give you a huge head start with your portfolio and your pursuit for scholarship money! Please read the threads about the Discovery program and you will get an idea of the level of information and commitment to our programs.
It is difficult for people outside our field to understand why a degree does very little for a career as a practicing artist. Getting a degree is the standard solution for most fields, a degree for a professional artist is about as useful as a degree for a professional athlete! It all comes down to your portfolio and your capabilities. The question you need to ask yourself is.... Would you rather learn from successful practicing artist or instructors who do not make art for their living? They are two completely different occupations!
I hope this helps!

here is an unofficial and loose time line for the future.
Before June - Admission into TAD, at varying length and location
June 2010 - 3 Week workshop. Strongly suggested.
July 2010 - Class begins.
Sometime before January 2011 - Admission into TAD for the spring semester. There will be less scholarships, but there will be admission none-the-less.
January 2011 - 3 week workshop. Strongly suggested for first time entrants.
February 2011 - Class begins.
I would venture to guess that this very rough schedule repeats itself.
I did not look up any actual dates and this is probably wrong. But you were asking about how you would attend two schools in the month of June. Hopefully this sheds some light on whether for not you will be able to apply and gain entrance at a later date.
good luck

Thanks, Thyname. You've bee really helpful to everyone through this
Some more, lol...
Straight from a list my mother compiled:
1. What date do classes start? What date do classes end?
2. How long is each semester in weeks?
3. How many people will be accepted into this program? How many scholarships are being given out, full and partial?
4. Will my son still have "full-time student" status for insurance purposes since this is not an accredited school/college?
5. What is the address of the location of the site in Richmond?
6. Do students on-site pay extra for workshops, or is it included in tuition?
7. On-site in Richmond: What % of classes will be w/ an instructor in a classroom + what % will be on-line?
edit: one more, lol...
8. How does the Illustration Academy fit into the Illustration major at TAD? Will Illustration students at TAD have to pay the $3900 fee for the Illustration Academy workshop? Or will it be included in the tuition?
My mother is using phrases like "politician-talk" and "vague" and "ambiguous", so I'd really like a concrete answer to these, if possible...she totally doesn't believe doing this would be worth it. She worries that it might go under, it might not be able to continue after the first year, I'd have nothing to show for it, etc. I mean, I kind of know that I would, because I would work my ass off and I've seen the work on the Atelier students and the Illustration Academy students.
Anyway....

I'll do my best to try to find some answers to those questions. But I am just another student and all the answers I give are all already stated in these very forums. if you want, you can buy me coffee at one of the workshops for all of this :lounge:
I actually am a little busy right now. So I will update this later.
-----Update-----
Alrighty, sorry about the wait. I went to a play tonight. It was awesome.
Thanks, Thyname. You've bee really helpful to everyone through this
np, I like helping people make the right decisions.
Straight from a list my mother compiled:
hi mom, You will probably read this. I am not a part of the school but hopefully this helps a little bit.
1. What date do classes start? What date do classes end?
Class actually begin. "July 9 - ONLINE, POD, and ONLINE/POD/Hybrid program begins. School has officially started". The workshop starts on June 14 in Kansas City. It is not mandatory but extremely highly suggested. Classes end Christmas time. Last day will probably be a Friday. Probably dec. 17th. not official though.
2. How long is each semester in weeks?
Let's do some math. July9th--> Dec 17th. 23 weeks. again. not counting the 3 week workshop. 26 weeks if you want to include them. There will be holidays and spring break.
3. How many people will be accepted into this program? How many scholarships are being given out, full and partial? I don't see why there would be a limit to the online version of the school. There are four pods with about 25 students per. So about 100 students attending the tangible portion of the program. $2,000,000 in scholarships are allocated to this semester's entrants. I'm sure they will give out as many scholarships as they can. There are full rides. half scholarships and quarter scholarships.
$2,000,000/$45,000 = 44.44. So if they only hand out only full scholarships it would be go to 44 students.
$2,000,000/(45,000*.25) = 178. So if they hand out only quarter scholarships it would go to 178 students.
So giving it the old college try. There should be somewhere between 178 to 44 scholarships given out. My math could be incorrect. but hey, it's better than nothing.
4. Will my son still have "full-time student" status for insurance purposes since this is not an accredited school/college?
I highly doubt it. He will technically not be enrolled in a "university"
5. What is the address of the location of the site in Richmond?
These specifics have not been released yet.
6. Do students on-site pay extra for workshops, or is it included in tuition?
Here are some tricky details. The word workshop implies the bi-annual 3 week workshops. However the questions makes me think you are talking about the PODS/studios. John English has said that One workshop is included in tuition, not sure if it's per year or for the entire enrollment.
It hasn't been stated whether or not the Studios/PODs will have a fee.
If you do mean the workshops. Housing and transportation is your responsibility.
7. On-site in Richmond: What % of classes will be w/ an instructor in a classroom + what % will be on-line? TAD is an Online Education. The PODs allow students to have access to teachers as mentors and have access to live models/demos. POD also gives students the access to other... students.
8. How does the Illustration Academy fit into the Illustration major at TAD? Will Illustration students at TAD have to pay the $3900 fee for the Illustration Academy workshop? Or will it be included in the tuition?
The Illustration Academy will be separate. I'm not sure about the $3900. I have no idea when you would find time to attend the Illustration academy's summer workshop. John English would be the best person to answer this question.
This is what he said on the matter http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=2629636&highlight=Illustration+Academy#post2629636

I am sorry about the lack of concrete answers. But a lot of this is because the school is just starting and there is so much to be done. So a lot of the specifics that students need to know are still being hammered out. The crew at ca.org, the illustration academy and the Atelier are working their asses off. I do not know you and there is nothing that I can say or do to change your mind if it is already made. Please keep in mind that being an artist is like being a professional athlete. We do not get jobs because of a piece of paper that says we went to school for 4 years and got above a 2.0 GPA. We get jobs because we are better than the guy next to us. TAD is not accredited because they do not wish to compromise a great curriculum, not because they can't be.
Also, this program will not fold based on the history of the programs that came before it. Even though TAD is just starting up, it is actually a merger of two successful schools. Check out where the Atelier ranks on this magazine's list of best digital schools. http://www.imaginefx.com/02287754332325055513/top-10-digital-art-schools.html
I'm off to bed. I have school in the morning.
Good luck

and I definitely don't expect anyone to rush up and give me all these answers on a silver platter just like that, everyone is super-busy, its understandable

A few answers are in this thread:
http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=182214
4. Since the course is not accredited it's my understanding that your son won't have fulltime student status. I could be wrong though.
6. One workshop is included in tuition. I don't know how much additional workshops will cost.
8. I would assume there are no additional tuition fees. That would've surely been stated somewhere on the TAD pricing webpage if it were the case.
Cheers,
Simon

I'll answer TAD RVA (Richmond) specific questions.
8. The Illustration Academy is not included with tuition for TAD. It is a separate program which will be held in the Kansas City and Richmond TAD POD locations, prior to the official beginning of The Art Department. Information for the Illustration Academy can be found here (http://www.illustrationacademy.com/new/index.html).
7. The entire TAD curriculum will be offered online. PODs are on site facilities which will be organized and run by a Director (I will be the POD Director at the TAD RVA site), an artist in residence (Josh George). For more information regarding PODs, go to the FAQ thread within the forums. I will be in the studio two days per week, working with students, and Josh George will be on site a minimum of 20 hours per week for students. The PODs are open studio spaces that will encourage and foster growth between the faculty and students alike.
6. One three week workshop is included in the tuition for The Art Department. Students will have the ability to attend the second workshop for a separate fee, if they choose to do so.
5. We are currently in the process of finalizing the agreement for the space in Richmond, which will be ready for students when the program officially begins. We are brokering a deal for the site to be held at Rocketts Landing, and if all goes well, this is where we will be: http://www.rockettsvillage.com/
That is the information that I have regarding the Richmond POD. Your additional questions should be addressed to the TAD email:

Thanks so much, Mr. Hundley. I suppose now, I just need to decide if It would be worth the living costs to relocate to Richmond, get a job there, a car, etc...
At the same time, I kind of want that college experience, in that I'm always around people; I don't really love the idea of learning mostly from my home. Plus I don't think my mother is going to believe that all of this could be taught online.
Eh, we'll see.
