Topic: Noah's Ark

Background: I've seen this topic being suggested a few times in the suggestions thread, so I figured to give it a try. I assume most of you are familiar with the legend of Noah building his giant boat before the flood. For more info on the legend check out wiki (or do your own research...):

Noah's Ark - Wiki (http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ark_van_Noach)

Please note that this legend isn't just something from the Bible, it's a myth that can be found in many other cultures and religions too! Also, there is no restriction in terms of sci-fi or fantasy or any specific time frame for this round, as long as you stick to the general theme.

Brief:
1. Design and draw a Noah's Ark!
2. Sci-fi or fantasy (or historical?), it's up to you!
3. That's it... now draw!

Deadline: Sunday, Februari 8

i think space sci-fi would be an interesting take, especially since you would have to come up with a 'flood' in space. of course, it would be cool to have 2x2 of a whole star system rather than just a planet.

I just can say anything cause I am soooo spotty when I turn something out. its wed, and I dont see anything posted and this has been up since Sunday. I Just read it myself expecting nothing new. Maybe an announcement from the Manley crew to let everyone know cause I am sure a lot of folks gave up by now.

Hehe...the first thing that came to mind actually was the great molasses flood :D ... the second was the doomsday ark.

Ugh, I just saw this today. I'd pretty much stopped checking IDW for updates.

Crap. Maybe I can still put something together.....

So, since people slowly trickle back in realising there's a new round up, what say I give this one an extra week? That should give everyone time to create a few sketches at the least :)

Or would you guys prefer a totally new topic?

Yes please yoitisi, an extra week. Swamped with projects at school this week but I really wanted to partake in this restart. I've got some sketches started.

Really nice work Orion, but I miss some indications on that its an Ark? Or how do you think?

Heres a really early sketch, will prolly go with the "historical" approach, Id love some C&C since this is pretty much the first thing I do completely with a pen tablet and PS.

Xbert - Thanks!
Ragnj - Thanks! And nice sketch yourself! I like the direction you're taking, and there's a really nice sense of scale/hugeness.

As for the ark-quality question... well, I probably should have included some of the concept description with the drawing.

I am partial to futuristic looking things, so naturally my inclination was to interpret "Noah's Ark" in that fashion. I thought about an alien ecosystem needing to flee their dying planet via spacecraft. The pods (green) lift species from the crumbling surface and they're off to rebuild somewhere else.

When it comes to the forms... I tried to blend specific elements, though very subtly, into the design of the ship. The main section is based on the traditional hull of a nautical ship, typically a "U" or "V" shape. The upper section (or bridge) is actually based on a "cross" design (not trying to be religiously insensitive or anything of the sort, so I hope people don't see it as that). I had the thought, "What would the designers of this ship think, when presented with this task?" Maybe they'd start the design utilizing some symbolic form elements related to the biblical tale, and then actually call it, "Noah's Ark".

Hope that makes sense, and I hope I'm not offending anyone.

Makes alot of sense, I was thinking along the lines of the pods picking up the last couple of people/animals. Maybe you can add some vegetation to the scene as to show that its a environtment in drastical change aswell, or if it was a rocky planet they lived on maybe some sort of city/village falling apart?

I like the subtle cross and I really doubt it offends anyone using religious symbols when were supposed to show something with a very strong connection to and based of an religious history.

here is a wip, basically a mobile greenhouse on a earth of sand.
hopefully i can finish soon before the vote goes up.

Heres an update, added shades, some background and coloured some water. Gona make it look like the whole ship is made of reed.

C&C very welcome!

Here we go!

Orion9282: Thanks for kicking this off. Nice futuristic arc. Nice to see your use of ambient red light on base of craft. Maybe to aid your portrayal of exiting the harmful planet dialogue I would increase the drama. Use brighter hues to make the planet seem hotter. More atmospheric perspective and smog effects on the bottom would help as well.

Ragnj: I will critique your line work first. I like it. I could do without the tornadoes. Maybe the last remains of land barely peaking out of the water, or a few birds flying overhead if you think the drawing needs anything else. However, I think you need to work on your painting technique. I know you are new to it. The mountains are pretty nice, if not a bit too overpowering. Favorite parts are your water style, and the new hull. Seeing individual reeds is great. It matches more of the style of your portfolio work (pretty eerie stuff by the way, but cool). Like the boat / water struggle the most. And your pen stroke emphasize it. Keep it up and keep enjoying the tablet.

Lander: Interesting. Is it beaming up the last of the animals and storing them inside the giant orb? Could use more information to understand the process. It clearly is not just a ship, but its hard to tell what it's doing.

John McKenna: Quite conical. Some slight perspective issues. On the front 'X' the slanted one like "/" is not in a straight line like the vertical one is. The lower cylinder is much lower than the upper one. The three cylinders would should revolve an ellipse that is lies on the same minor axis as the rest of your craft if symmetry is your goal. Looks likes its orbiting a planet. Nice choice for an arc.

abediah: Certainly an intriguing arc idea. Maybe some solar panels to supply its energy. Try to finish it up for the deadline. Eager to see what you can do to it.

here's a futuristic sorta thing, Noah's Nerf Zeppelin...

Ragnj - Absolutely... I think you're right, I should add vegetation and animals to aid the image. Thank you for the feedback... it's really helpful to hear these detailed critiques because it makes me more aware of how to make my images better.

Murmurman - Yeah, after looking at the image, it seems very sterile and non-action-y enough. I think elemidi's captures that feel really well, and tells a nice story.

As a side note, I realize that I, at times, will not physically make the changes and update the image that people suggest for me. That may seem like I'm not listening or something. HOWEVER, this is more a result of me literally not having the time to make the changes (it's 2am here and I just got done with all my other work!).

I absolutely want people to keep picking apart my paintings to the highest degree because I need to get better. Those lessons that people give me make their way into the next image. Sorry for the PSA, just felt like I needed to say that... so pile on the crits!

Ragnj
February 12th, 2010, 05:41 PM
Thanks for the crits Murmurman, the mountains are actually just a crappy skye Ima rework later on, want to keep all signs of land away from the picture so the viewer gets the feelin that the ship is the last human artefact on earth, struggling against the enourmous storm and ocean that god brought upon it. The birds is a great idea wich might add some life to the now kinda steril ship, if I make them in huge flocks it can also add to the big dimensions of the ship Im after.

I'm glad to see that the week extra worked out for some people. There's some entries that make running this activity worth it :)

That said, the finals thread is up. Please post your final entries in there before the deadline!
