Amber Alexander-Thanks Amber. I made a mock-up model in Maya then painted textures/colors over a render taken from Maya...was inspired by watching Kemp Remillards vid:)

Jar-MarThanks! A bit of both I guess. Went to school for graphic design and learned a bit there. Took a few classes at Gnomon and got a great 3D foundation there. Started working on a mod over a year ago and learned a lot on that. I also try and get my hands on as many books, vids, and online tutorials as possible.
Traveler-Thanks man. Just started working on art test for a game company, but hopefully will have something new in a few weeks to show.

In your experience is it easier to apply texture maps to the models or just to paint over the render in PS? I need to get some vehicles for my portfolio, and am leaning towards painting in PS. Also are there are any specific resources that help you with your vehicle design? Finally this is more of a dumb question, but how do you render in Maya with the lines showing as you have done in your ortho shots? I haven't seen an option to do that.

Definitely just painting over in PS...then you don't have to layout the UVs beforehand.
As far as resources for designs, I just try and spend as much time doing research online and gathering reference beforehand...if I know what direction I want to go. For this vehicle in particular, I came up with an initial concept from my head, started modeling it and making a lot of changes as I went along. I started looking online for scout type vehicles for reference about halfway through to try and get more ideas. I do have a growing collection of art books I'll look through if I get a mental block, for inspiration, or to find some cool detail I might like.

Or you can select the lines you don't want while in MAYA, before rendering, then hit soften edge so they won't show up in the render. Badabing badaboom!

really nice and solid design, i like the use of shut lines to create volume in the curves. its all to easy to make vehicles that look flat. great job

Hey, thanks for the kind words:)
Thought I'd throw this in, as this was my first concept using 3D. The texturing isn't that interesting since I did a top down view, but I wanted it to be easily readable for the artist. It's a modular walkway system for the full conversion mod I'm still working on in my free time.
