shiNIN: Thanx for comment! Feel free to write here whenever you want :) As for a dragon, yours is looking much better then mine! I'd give it a little more sharpness and more bright hotspot on the eye - and it would be perfect )
NiaLain: He-he, thanx)
Did a few watercolor quick sketches from life... WTF, and a person who did those wants to earn for living with drawing and painting ??? O_o
....Anyway, here is also a WIP that I've posted in CRITIQUE CENTER & W.I.P. SHOWCASE and guys gave me a lot of great advices, so I'll work on it a bit later.

Well, my dragon became much worse I hoped and see in my mind... :D Thanks.
Oh, Rapunzel :) I didn't write in its topic because I can't help at this point but the face became better :) I already said something like this but I love its atmosphere and colors, it's nice to look at it, it's just it could be some much better with fixing as much flaws (anatomy, lighting) as you can.
I see watercolor everywhere nowadays... I should try it again myself! I like your pieces :D

April 18th, 2011, 08:52 PM
I suggest doing some quick color studies I feel the colors are a little muddy in the Rapunzel image. The face looks like it's lit differently then the rest of the image the face looks to me like it's lit pretty straight on but there's quite a large cast shadow on her neck. I feel the composition is nicely balanced though the face is a very strong focal point since it's really the only thing lit.
I don't know, that's all I have to say keep it up =)

shiNIN: Thanx for such a good words! I'll work on Rapunzel at the weekend, though I feel that my knowlege and skill is not enough to fix everything(
Yes, water-color is nice, but I find it quite hard to use. The thing that I like is that you can go really creative with mixing and blending various colors.
NiaLain: Thanx for good critics I'll try to fix what I can !
batcustard: Thanx )
Just some color study for today:

Your last little studies are lovely! :D Me too, me too, I'm totally a child to toying around with such little simple creatures! They are funny...
I like the colors of the second and the last one and the atmosphere of the scenery of the last and the third one :) (I counted from left to right, from top to bottom)
Good luck with Rapunzel, don't worry, it won't be perfect but it surely will be nice AND you learn from it! It's a step of the many that lead you toward greatness :D

Started new sketcbook today, I always thought that paper quality doesn't really matter, but it appeared - it does. This sketchbook is a present, so I don't think I'd buy something like this by myself, but those white nice pages feel so good! Paper really can insire :) Definitely worth trying.

Nice life sketches, hope you have fun in your new sketchbook :D
One small crit for your design stuff is to try pushing the sizes of the shapes more. Try making sure the shapes are clearly different sizes it looks very appealing compositionally.

Hi, long time no see ;) I love your paintings, this flail ball you did couple of updates back is simply awsome! So clean, so sharp, aaah, simply great ;) I have nothing much to give you as advice. You know what you are doing. I can only suggest you to start playing more with perspective. For example those buildings in post #264. They are drawn frome two different angles, and this horizon line you puted there is confusing xd. Anyway awsome stuff, keep it up! xd

hello
i think the sketches on post #244 are very beautiful, in particular the girl who holds a violin, the expression mixxed with playing viloin with hands is a great idea i think it could turn into quite something if you were to do a illustration of it, but that is just my personal opinion :)
#259 the anatomy studies are sharp and clean, your linework has really improved alot, same goes for the studies on #264
keep going and will look forward to next update

I don't like the hair in your vector art. They don't fit the face. I mean that those hairs are made so loosely with an artistic touch I could say. While face is little more refined, and tight. Maybe I'm too biased towards this type of art. But it's only me. Waiting for more of your work ;)

Fallenangel: In English even better - so everyone understands ) Good idea about surrounding, I'll try this. Although it might be not so interesting as main character.
Today a bit of doodles, and anatomy from Vilppu - decided to switch from A4 to A3, feel like this could better teach me to draw lines, not short strokes. My scanner is A4 though, so quality can be a little off.... The more I learn anatomy, the more I think it's endless and I don't know nothing...
Also finished version of Rapunzel, even if the painting isn't perfect I prefer to move on, do other works rathen than stuck in only one.

Hello :). I see great studies in here , very good job. I think you need to work more on the rendering side of things. On putting values of light and shadow in your works. This last sketch even if it have some drawing issues it loses a lot cause of value relations.I paintover it and simplified it. We have to think all forms (even the most complex ones) as simpler ones, and proceed from the general to the special.Sorry for my english and for the confusing stuff. I am sure that as soon as you work some more on the values (greyscale) you will probably see better :). Keep up the great work, lovely lines

Hi there! You're doing really great with that amount of studies. You really develop with every next work and it's visible! I found a lot of useful stuff in your thread, gonna find Hampton's book's scans right now :) And your colors are really great too!
the only problem is described in post # 333, I'll just add - please notice the color of shadow Mr. Kingkostas used. look at the color of the shadow on your hand and on the grass when you're sitting under the sun. it's some stuff from Capt. Obvious but it'll really make your colors more live.
Good luck! Waiting for your future updates and development ^__^

Zia is lovely, the colors makes her even sweeter. But I guess she deserve better feet, her hands are much more realistic and graceful than her feet. But it took another visit to notice that, back then I just liked it (but I didn't want to give an "I like it" comment).
The real life sketches looks good. Mine are usually bad. I'm slow enough but whenever I try to draw someone, they change their gesture 5-10 seconds later, seriously. It's confusing but my own willing model is impatient too *sigh*. Real figures have so much more information though so I won't give up.
Your SB is better and better :)

I like this latest study. Good stuff from imagination :) The face looks really beautiful and I like the colors in it. However like Ramalooke said the pose looks somewhat stiff. I think the torso should be a bit longer (?) because the viewpont is not really that high. Also the shadows on the body look somewhat "dirty" (too dark, grey, colorless, or whaterver is the word I'm looking for?), mostly in the boobs area. Also the boobs look too big but that's only my opinion, lol. Anyways good job I hope I managed to give at least somewhat useful crit this time :D Keep up the good work!

Nice Hampton studies, and I just love the Zia fanart. I agree that the feet could handle a little more attention, and I think her left (our right) hand looks a little awkward being bent out; it might look more natural if it were aligned with the arm (we tend to only bend the wrist out like that if we have a specific reason, like if you're holding something or reaching out to something). The study from imagination in post #375 is very nice; I really enjoy the outfit design and her face, but I agree that her chest looks very strange. It looks like she's bending forward a bit based on the foreshortening of the torso, but then her breasts should be sagging down and together based on the pose and the fact that they are rather large. Anyway, keep up the good work! ;)

Hello
your studies look good but what i can say is that in the process of going from a study to a drawing that you do from your imagination you loose the information. Make sure your mind is on what you have to learn from a study and nothing else because you can end up doing a lot of them but because of the lack of focus you wont be able to get most of the information in.
When you draw leave your problems outside and only focus on the moment, hope this helped and keep it up.

I like the fact that there’s so many studies in your sketchbook, makes me wanna get more serious with those as :) I love that WIP painting in post #367 it’s got potential to become a truly wonderful piece, that said a small crit, her mid section is slightly too tall/long, maybe reduce the length of her torso a little. The study from imagination’s real good, the colors & mood are so great. I’ve only used alchemy once & apart from the fact that I found it confusing :P it’s a great program, those are very nice works you did with it, especially that second one. The girl skipping is a nice gesture, but the foreshortening is a little awkward (Dont worry, its probably the hardest thing to get right). You've divided the leg into these segments that look unnatural and dont have much flow or rhythm to them. I dont have a tablet at the moment so I cant really do a paintover for you but remember hogarth's method to interconnect forms in deep space and the 'T' overlap technique...but gain nice gesture, definitely coveys a sense of mood for the character so good on your for that. im pretty busy but if i remember I will come back and give 'er a go for a redline paint over so feel free to drop me a line to remind me if you're interested......keep it up!
edit*
oh hey actually i just posted a life drawing of mine earlier this week on my sketchbook that shows decent overlap of a similar pose of the lower leg in a foreshortened position so check it out...its not perfect but it displays the concept that im trying to get across.

Perhaps the colours could've been a bit more saturated and have more contrast in the values (the reference really has a big value range), but on the other hand it has an old photo feeling this way. i don't know what your intention was.

The portrait came out really good (as far as I can tell quickly, I'm in an impatient mode right now :bashful: ) though not colorwise if you wished to make them realistic. It's lovely but almost monochromatic, I see the blush and lips but still, the skin colors is too yellowish and probably the hair could use some more hues as well. I just feel it.
The watercolor birds are funny, I wanna do this too, watercolor splashes then pen/marker/whatever, I'm confident I can do that in a way I won't hate the result. Thanks ~

Maybe a bit too saturated colors on her arms and hair... The golden wouldn't be a problem if it wasn't hair, but the bright skin colors seem to overpower the others... I think.
I'd move her left eye and the arms aren't quite right, the ankles should be a lil more thin I guess, except these, I like the whole thing, nice details on the corset (I love corsets anyway), the gesture is nice and even if I criticized them, I like the colors in general. Just some finetuning would make it nicer in my opinion.

The last three pictures ARE NOT MINE, I just wanted to ask you guys, maybe some of you know artists or places where I can find more works like those? With nice weight of line, good accents?

I like the first portrait sketch a lot. Well it looks a tiny bit odd because the face part is too big for the head and the eyes are too wide but the strokes are easy and artistic. Bring moar, I'm selfish and love to see good portraits and you are a fine candidate to do such ones in the near future.

Nice work. I like the wip from post #390. I think it is a lot harder to make such a simple pictures/theme to look interesting and you succeeded in doing so. Keep posting!

Soooo... today I made myself to paint a selfportrait. I'm very critical to my appearance, so I don't like to do it, but I understand that the best study - is a study from life, and the only model available - is me((.So it's very rough as the sun began to come down and I don't really look like myself and I rather look like a wood..

hi in2, nice photostudies! I see you're doing live model too. lucky you :p the landscape with water, it's a bit of a shame you make the water return at the bottom, and not just let it flow out. that would not only have been more natural, but woulda worked better as a composition.

Nice stuff again :D I like everything (bottom left woman head in #468 looks cool, good expression) and find most flaw in figures, proportions aren't quite right here and then. The very last stylized gal is lovely and I like her upper half but something strange happens around her hips. The torso should get wider more gradually and the tilt is too extreme too.
You totally should put more peachyness and highlights on her, she's that type of girl. Now the nice golden stuff overpowers her.

Thank you for having a look to my SB, really appreciate it.
A few words about myself: I'm 24 years old and I've got Masters degree in Systems Analysis, but then realized that numbers are too boring for me . So I get back to my hobby after 6 years break ... and here I am. I feel that I have absolutely not enough drawing and painting knowlege and skills. That's why I'm here :)
I'll be glad to hear any comments and critics (be so hard as you like ^_^ ) from you and also I'm trying to help if I can :)

Newest piece looks like a big step up to me good jobbb. For your pencil work try and be a bit neater/refined with the blocking in, it can help make the read of the form and the general figure much better.

youre coming along great! your digital stuff is improving a lot, and that insect study is great.
nice composition on that last landscape.
as for the final piece you used as your avatar, its very nicely done, one small crit comes to mind which i hope can be helpful: the perspective of the stone-ground seems to not be aligned properly to the figure. it almost looks more like a horizontal wall than a flat surface. other than that, great work!

Loads of progress here! Keep em coming. Great draftsmanship skills!
One thing I'll point out that I'm noticing on this page is that your backgrounds are all pretty much empty. Perhaps its your intention to do so but even with minimal adjustments that is smart design you can enhance the background and strengthen the piece as a whole.
Keep up the good work!

That last one's really gorgeous! <3 I glanced back at the first page out of curiosity, and I have to say that your improvement is seriously impressive. It'd be nice to see more finished work from you though - do you have a particular goal for your work that you're working towards, something specific that you'd like to do with your work one day?

dierat: Thank you))) Well, one of my goals is to work as illustrator for famous card games, like "Magic: The Gathering", for example. At the moment I work as concept artist for company that makes casual games for iPad, so there is not much time left for personal pieces. But I try to do my best))
