"Character Design: How I do it at Valve Software..." with Andrea Wicklund
$45.00
Artists are faced with a series of problems that need to be solved when designing a character. The process involves concept and narrative as well as form and function. I will outline the way I approach designing characters, touching on the importance of strong figure drawing skills, i.e. gesture, anatomy, proportion, contour , color, value, and composition within the character vignette will all be covered. I hope you will join me!

I looked her up, and found her bio on the LevyCreative.com site she is on - then paraphrased a little - I related, so I figured others would, too. :]
“Andrea Wicklund was raised in the remotest corner of Wisconsin, by a schoolteacher mother and an engineer father who at one time led a company that makes recycling trucks. Before she reached her teens, she was splitting logs at the family woodcutting camp and operating the riveting machine in their basement workshop. Fortunately, neither of these activities cost her any fingers, and she was also able to begin drawing at the side of her uncle, a wildlife painter. Andrea momentarily pursued a career in law before rejecting that path as inadequately sleep-depriving. She chose art instead. Armed with a degree in illustration from San Francisco's Academy of Art College, she duped a confused receptionist into letting her into an art director's office. Two months later, her first illustration appeared in Spin magazine. Andrea's work has since appeared in Rolling Stone, Vibe, the Society of Illustrators Annual, etc. She has twice attended the Illustration Academy, and has been invited to lecture there and at Academy of Art College. Current projects include concept work for the videogame and entertainment industries.
Sound familiar??? :D
Here's some of her art, too!
enjoi!

Andrea Wicklund is the perfect example of an artist that has taken the time to arm themselves with great traditional skills, an understanding of art history, problem solving and digital skills. You might say she is the complete package and because of this she is able to pursue her career in many different directions.
Andrea's class will be very informative concerning character design, but will also give a student a good understanding of how well informed you have to be to compete as a professional!
This will be a great class!

Well, the only way to know for sure is to get a peek at it, right ? But I too remain sceptic, this is buisness after all (which all in all is fair, and I would do the same given the opportunity... But my classes doesn't pay 45 bucks... yet )

Yes, this class and all others are available for a period of time after the class on Demand.
You can purchase the class as usual and if you can't make it, you can watch it on demand at your leisure for 15 to 30 days (depending on the class).
Hope that helps!

Now if only they could start making more copies of "Half-Life and Half-Life 2 Raising The Bar", ooh if they made these into a combo pack, I would be happy!

Really excited to see this, I LOVE Valve's artists, but I never really bought anything off of here before. I paid for it but I can't seem to get the password. The order status page had nowhere that I could apply card/account number. Anyone have any ideas? :wtf:

This was the first streaming class that I bought a slot on. I was wary given no prior experience with the system, but I'm glad I took a chance. Set up and such was easy and I found the class a very nice and interesting experience.
Thanks.

I really enjoyed this class. I think she did a nice job of covering what we need to know to be a concept artist. I really liked seeing the development stages for some of the characters of Left 4 dead 2. Overall it was an awesome class. Thank you MB and Andrea for doing this!

Hey there, nice to see your still around and drawing.
Wish I could help you out but Im still not done with that other stuff.
Almost there, I can see the end of the road.
Pretty good design you got going there though. I like the direction this is going.

Molly, this "member" looks to be some weird new sort of spambot that riffs off a word or two in preceding posts, quoting something from elsewhere with the same keywords - in this case, from http://forums.epicgames.com/showpost.php?p=26067274&postcount=10
