The series, which was always in the hands of Don Lawrence until he died, has now been taken over by noobcakes. Do you think I'm overreacting? Every time I pass by a store who sells the new ones next to the old ones, I'm going to gringe in disgust.

I seem to remember Storm having a whole different style from before Don Lawrence took over?
Also, while I'm a fan of Storm too Don wasn't infallible either. He has done quite a few pages below his own level himself, probably due to deadlines. Those images you show are either covers or the art at the back of the cover, which is not a fair comparison to the first page of the new artists. Granted, I think Lawrence did better than that even at his worst but I wouldn't be surprised if their deadline was a lot shorter too.
As for the second image of the new artists, I like it and I think it actually fits great into the world of Don Lawrence.
That said, I haven't picked up or checked out the new issue of Storm yet so :P

Well I haven't picked up the new Storm either, simply because I refuse to, I have all the ones (or most) from Don Lawrence though.
The drawings might be not be terrible, but the rendering is. Your point that they might have less time is probably valid, but it's obviously not just time, but skill too. And if they don't have enough time or good enough artists to follow up on such an amazing one, they just shouldn't. This isn't throw away comics we're talking about, from someone trying to make a quick buck, they're masterpieces, he's among the best European illustraters who ever lived, why tarnish his work like this.

I guess i'm a bit confused about what you're aiming for with this thread.
I know that the artists who took over Storm, Romano Molenaar and Jorg de Vos, are very very very careful about what they do with this comic. I've met them several times and they're very nice guys who are very much focused on how they can make this comic as great as 'the original'. Of course it's not the same as Don Lawrence, they're not him! They use their own ways and new techniques, but they still try to be true to the Don Lawrence Universe as much as possible.
Perhaps you don't like Romano's lineart or Jorgs coloring. It can happen. But that's more a matter of personal taste in this case in my opinion than about them shitting on what you liked before. By now this duo has made 2 books i believe, continuing what Lawrence started. These guys are fans of the comics by Lawrence too, and they know they can't get away with ruining it. So far, on conventions, i've seen so many fans who are happy that Storm is continued and by people who are skilled, and yes, these are fans who are members of the Don Lawrence Fanclub - the club who's most likely to bring out pitchforks if they're not happy. Molenaar is not some noobcake, he has drawn for Lady Death, Witchblade, Wolverine en X-men in the past. Jorg is also very talented as he has experience more locally, but also spanning several years.
I get that you don't like other people drawing Storm. But try to be respectful and not call anyone 'noobcake' simply cos you don't like the result.

You're right, I'm not being respectful, because they can't respect a series from a master. I know, I know, once money is involved, people have no issues digging up a series from someone who died and just continue it. (this series, from Don Lawrence was DISCONTINUED in 2001 fyi).
Doesn't mean it's the right thing to do, and lots of people are going to be upset when they see these laying in the store next to the original one, not just me.
It's also not a matter of personal taste, you have to be half-blind not to see the difference in quality.

They are respectful.... Do you know how long they looked for a specific team to work on this? This isn't just about money. Of course, yes, if a series is successful there is money involved, but there's also artistic integrity and Storm is one of the series which gets very protected.
Also, the 'new' Storm has been out for at least a year by now, the angry people have already seen and ran. Just cos you find it ugly, doesn't mean you can't be respectful. It's not YOUR art they took and the original owners of the Don Lawrence brand think they're doing a great job. Stop taking ugliness personally.

Why the big chip on your shoulder, Kaycy? Seems like every post I've seen you make so far is either dismissive, derogatory in some form or fashion, or downright condescending. Can't say it helps in taking you seriously when it seems like butting heads with a steel-lined brick wall.
Maybe chill out a bit? I would reserve the term 'noobs' for a real amateur who really gacked up. I'm not seeing it in these. Then again, 'newbie' is preferable to 'noob', which really makes anyone saying it sound elitist. There's something about each one of your posts that gets my hackles rising - perhaps it's your tone?
You'll be much more pleasant to talk to and with if that chip goes flying off, you know?

I'm not trying to sound condescending, but can you with good conscience claim that this series is not getting totally destroyed by amateurs? Yeah, it is.
And I'm chill, I'll drink my cocomilk now.
My roomy pointed this out since she knows I like the series, why is it that every awesome series and illustration series gets destroyed. People are hugely disappointed in films which are destroyed by follow up directors, or book series, but no one can call out this atrocity..lol much.
The chip gives me +armour. Sorry if I offended anyone, I can cast some steelskin oak on all of you who need it, it has +10 AGI and gives +1 to magic.

Actually, you would do a better job. I would have no issues with this series getting a follow-up, if a comparative was made between the two and if deemed appropriate, would be given to a new artist.

Yeah I don't see what the huge problem is. I mean, I would have to say the old stuff IS better, but the new stuff is decent, given the crap-tastic art a lot of good books end up with these days. It's just different.

So far, Kaycy, in no way have you told us WHY you don't like it. There's no solid criticism in your posts, just bashing. There's no real ground why you hate the art. That makes every post in here condescending and just plain sour fangirlhysteria.
Also, for a fan, you should've complained about this 3 years ago, when it was announced who were gonna work on this. Also, it's not the first time that Storm has had a different illustrator than Lawrence and that also got accepted, cos it was nicely done by Dick Matena. Lawrence would just write the story then, mostly cos he was old and starting to get blind.

You have a funny sense of humor with that D&D-like part. :D
While I have seen series that I've liked taken over in ways less flattering, I find that unless I have the skill and gumption to match those I'm disgruntled with, I really should shut up. Else it feels like a game of pointing fingers, in which case the same finger points back to me in "Can I do better?"

Don Lawrence is one of my heroes. I used to read The Trigan Empire as a kid, and so wanted to draw like him, and if you think Storm was the best of his work seek out that particular series, it is truly stunning. However the current compilations are extremely expensive, but well worth it if you have the money.

http://www.triganempire.co.uk/home/
When Lawrence stopped doing The Trigan Empire there's no doubt it changed when other artists took over, however each had a 'charm' of their own. One of the artists who took over from Lawrence on Storm was Liam Sharp, an extremely nice chap and excellent artist who was Lawrence's assistant for a time. Who the current artists are on the series I'm not sure, but they look pretty good to me. Let's face it though, Lawrence is a hard act to follow.

Cookiedough ShroudStar and you make the difference between the work of Don Lawrence and that of Yorg and Romano, of course, but Kaycy is absolutely right. Let me explain, talent is not to go, do you think the series would have known this Storm huge success if it had been created with the designs of two new artists pompous, but in 1975, I will not leave not respond as I would answer: NO! attention, I am not of those who say that everything was better before, but as illustrators Segrelles Vincente (mercenary) need not be replaced by a Gundark. Frank Frazetta would:medusachow: you think could be replaced by a draftsman vogue. Yes, I do not draw like them, but I'm doing quite well, my drawing is similar to that de Caza where Moebuis qualitatively. Storm back on the series, that of Don Lawrence and Martin Lodewijk Dick Matena, it was sufficient. :ilaekae:Let them create a series of them, and take their time, as do the best, when you want to go too fast, it does no good. For fans who say they loved this series is like the fans of the first Star Wars trilogy, they have worn for many high until the second breath and finally after 4 years of fanaticism starwarsien, they left the ship whatever there is still a lot of fans who cling to remember as the best, but that is past. Were this a more prominent thread with a more substantial pagecount, or less esoteric subject matter I would vote for a bot. As it stands, I think this may just be someone with less-than-exemplary forum navigation skills.

Whoever brought back this thread to life, thanks a lot!
Here is the story why:
In 2000 I was in England, Brighton and I saw an artis's exibition at the University of Sussex. It was full of beautiful artwork, mostly fantasy art and some vikings. After that I decided that I want to do this, I want to learn to draw. So I went to the nearest bookshop and bought two how to draw books, one of them "How to draw comic heroes by Marvel style". :bashful: :^^;: However, I was silly enough not to write down or memorize the artist's name. Over the years I just could not found out who he was, the viking reference was not enough. Reading this thread I just checked out Storm and finally I found out who was my inspiration! Guess who .. yep :) :teeth:
