thoughts to ponder. why is it "hanging" ?
what purpose does it serve..?
where is it built?
what is the garden ...what kind of plants...
why?

Sounds cool. I might try my hand at this.
A simple google image search produced some nice examples of Babylonian architecture.
This subject is interesting as it will easily allow both organic and inorganic architecture.
Does anyone know why the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were called that? After seeing some reference and looking up some history, I still am not sure why the word "hanging" is included.

I got the same impression duman, however I am sure actually seeing them in person would expain alot, I saw someones take on this in the Finally finished section, it was the hanging gardens of babylon set in the future "freegin epic". I have a few Ideas so far, Thanx Chaos!

i am asking for creative in put as wella s research.. when I ask the questions its is not really a prompt to go look it up. allthoguhthat is one way to tackle it. aonther would be to set your babylon on the gas planet of a couple chaleges ago..losd it onto airships in a steampunks floatign crysyal palace with babylonian flair....hang a whole alage garden from a cliff face to take advantage of the spray from a nearby water fall
" hanging " could be a reeference to terraced irrigatio like jpanese ricefields or inca potato gardens as in hanging form the side aof a clif/// need I go on?

in actuality I think the Hanging refers to rooftop gardens.. perhaps on ziggurats.. lie temple gardens adn palaces... not nessisarily "hanging. thats where the imagination comes in

quote wiki
This legendary garden, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, was built on the banks of the Euphrates river circa 600 B.C. It may never have existed except in the imagination of Greek poets and historians although archaeologists claim to have found the remains of its walls. Most scholars attribute its construction to King Nebuchadnezzar II to console his Median wife, Amytis, who missed the mountains and greenery of her home land. Others contend that it was the work of the semi-legendary Assyrian Queen Sammu-Ramat (Semiramis in Greek). The Gardens didn't really "hang" but were built on terraces which were part of the ziggurat and was irrigated by water lifted up from the Euphrates. There is not a single mention of a "hanging garden" in the Babylon cuneiform record but this is probably because it was considered part of the ziggurat structure and not a separate entity in itself"

not that yours has to be anything like this at all!.

I think a part of the "idea" behind a "Hanging Garden of Babylon" is humanity's ability/nature to recreate that which exists in nature, and attempt to improve or perfect it.

Drill bits that are of common use today mechanically resemble the internal workings of the pipes used to 'lift' the water from terrace to terrace-
whether windmills or animal labour were used to turn the central columns of the pipes is still speculated of course; as speculation is great fun!
Gunna hang some gardens after soo long- been gardening all week at my new residence in the wilds of vandeamons land...!

I'll give it a try. Its an interesting theme these days when we know the suminister of water is decreasing in some populations. The hanging gardens and the water complex to keep the plants alive, could be the symbol of power of a rising class, if we look towards future. And I believe it was the same concept in the ancient ages. Only the nobles and richest could enter into the hanging gardens of babylon, and the pyramid shape was ment in order to see the dryness of the outside landscape, and to let the poors look inside the garden, without letting in.

i was actually looking for a week to get into EOW, and since i did a model of the hanging gardens for one of my school projects some time ago, i thought this would be a good one to start with.

i think that the notion of "hanging" gardens mainly came from the fact that even in such a deserted area, the thought of creating such lucious gardens was something most couldn't imagine. though i guess the "hanging" part must have been some embelishment by people later on.

so far, what i've thought about was looking through the gate of ishtar, with some sort of market or military scene, on to the gardens, located in a floating platform.

this is a very rough blockout. iam gonna go with a desert with some of the babalonian architecture elements in it. where the hanging plants/ garden is going to be is a tricky one.

as far as the plants go, does it have to be a actual "garden" or just a place where plants grow.

Duman - that is quite confusing to look at.. try really varying the saturation to give depth and maybe work through the value scheme again - it's best to simplify the shapes and not have values changing sharply everywhere in the image, especially in the background

values/rough/thing working out an idea. hope it's reading ok.

i thought i could post my wip, since i'm about to go to sleep. i'm not entirely sure that i'll be able to finish it up by the 22nd, but i'll give it my best, plus i got the whole day of tomorrow cleared up, so i think i'll do plenty tomorrow. would love some critics and/or comments

edit:
@incinerated: the concept's looking good, but some more polishing would do beautiful in there
@dunman: i'm not entirely sure where your vanishing points are, and it seems a little crowded
@audit: i'm not entirely sure i get the idea. the big shapes would be some sort of floating islands right?

@josh: if sketchup's not allowed then i might as well just pull out now XP

as of now, i'm a little indecided. don't know if i'm going horizontal or vertical in the composition. i like the vertical on 'cause i just feel it's a little stronger and focuses better on the floating platform, but it means i wasted a lot of time on the unseen part of the gate (even though it's not that strongly rendered to be honest).

I have had a few hours to try this, been really busy at work, so really haven't had as much time as i'd like too.

This is riddled with perspective inaccuracies and colour problems :D

I'm going for a kinda post apoc, bio lab feel, Algae tanks for making oils and some flowers for drugs and medicines.
