Every American deserves an opportunity to study, understand, and contribute to the arts and humanities. This must begin in our schools, where children may have their first and most important exposure to these disciplines.

Does this mean art and music is going to be making a comeback in schools? Because in my last years of school, the budget to the art and music programs was virtually nonexistant, and taking art/music classes was not really encouraged, they'd rather you take math math math and math.....

So... It's like christmas but instead of eating you paint? Just like a real artist...

Don't worry. You don't have to do anything. Barack Obama has just voted "present" on the question of art. No money will be forthcoming from the government. Local government officials can now put on local art exhibitions where they charge the artist for being in the exhibition (not that they never did that before). They can put up red, white and blue bunting and serve apple pie.

Well cynics aside, I think it's certainly heartening to see a President acknowledging the importance of the Arts and Humanities in early education, and stressing the connection with the Sciences like so... compared to the very brief and decidely less impressive observances under the previous administration. Obama deserves at least some credit for putting that pen to work.

A little voice in the back of my head keeps nagging.. "the obama giveth, the obama taketh away".. watch out! :P

Its cool that art is put on the agenda tho, should be interesting to see what will actually come of this.

I wonder what the coverage about this will be?

"Obama and art? Or terrorism and hilter?" - Fox

"We have indisputable theories that Obama is drawing tentacle porn" -CNN

"Declaring our months? First it was black history, and now this! Who does this guy think he is?" -Glenn Beck

"Tonight, we have the spice girls, Jason Manley, and a tyrannosaurus. But first, the latest doodle from Obama supporting October art month: http://www.enewsreference.com/images/mccaincartoon.jpg" -Jon Stewart

"I support Obama declaring October art month. Even thought I don't draw, I just stare at a piece of paper until an image appears, cuz I'm just that awesome!" -Colbert

First October was dedicated to beer
then it was Rocktober
then Shocktober
Now it's Artober
Will October ever make up it's fucking mind?
I hope we get an art supply sale out of this.

So... what are we supposed to do?

Will we have to make propaganda to be considered participants like the NEA? Some tax payer-funding, a little subsidization maybe? A tax credit, perhaps?

Nothing to see here, just another politician paying off his election dues (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shepard_Fairey).
